    They didn't literally die off- the majority of Samaritans converted to Islam, and their descendants still live around Nablus.
    Those who converted to Islam are now Palestinians.
    According to Tsvi Misinai, many Palestinians know about their Israelite (Samaritan/Jewish) roots, but don't talk about it in public for fear of abuse, in the past by Anti-Israel Pan-Arabists and now by Islamic Radicals.

    1. They do not write in real ancient Hebrew (paleo-Hebrew) script, but in one that has significant stylistic differences from the paleo-Hebrew. Even Mr. Sedaqa conceded years ago that it was invented in the late 2nd century BCE. It does not exist in any of the written archeaological findings prior to that time.
    2. There are 2 reasons their Hebrew dialect does not really preserve an earlier pronunciation from BCE times: the majority of it has been corrupted with the passage of time, and the golden standard of Jewish Hebrew -- as shown by the late Bentziyon HaKohen of Djerba -- reflects a 2nd century BCE (if not earlier) pronunciation among Israel's Jews.

      I would say developed from Paleo-Hebrew, not invented. First, it is so close to Paleo-Hebrew that it is comprehensible to those who read Paleo-Hebrew (it is comprehensible to me). One can see how the cursive script is developing a bit differently from Samaria ostraca. Second, I don't see any reason for inventing a new script when Aramaic is written all over the empire and there is already Hebrew if you want it to be Hebrew. As for sparse archeological evidence during the Persian period, it is true for the entire region and not uniquely for the Samaritans. So let's agree to disagree on this.

      @ZviJ1 3 года назад +1

      @@unexpectedisraelirene I don't want to get into hair splitting, so I'll respond only to the last point. All serrious scholars -- and they include Benyamim Sedaqa -- agree that not only is there absolutely no archaeological evidence for the Samaritan script prior to the late 2nd century BCE, but that it did not even exist. I'm not talking solely about the Persian period. Anybody telling others otherwise is misleading and quite frankly, not to be taken seriously.

    • @unexpectedisraelirene
      @unexpectedisraelirene  3 года назад +2

      @@ZviJ1 Of course it did not exist if it developed from an earlier script, but developed and invented are two different things. As for lack of archeological evidence, there is a lack of archeological data for the Persian period and very little data on the Assyrian period for the whole region. To which other periods are you refering? In addition the lack of archeological data does not prove that they never existed. Perhaps they were made of organic materials that did not reach us or perhaps they will be discovered later.

    1. הם לא כותבים בכתב העברי הקדום האמיתי (פליאו-עברי), אלא בכתב שיש בו הבדלים סגנוניים משמעותיים מהפליאו-עברי. אפילו מר צדקה הודה לפני שנים שהוא הומצא בסוף המאה ה-2 לפנה"ס. הוא לא קיים באף אחד מהממצאים הארכיאולוגיים שנכתבו לפני אותה תקופה.
    2. ישנן 2 סיבות שהניב העברי שלהם לא ממש שומר על הגיה קדומה יותר מהעידן לפנה"ס: רובו הושחת עם חלוף הזמן, ותקן הזהב של העברית היהודית - כפי שהוצג על ידי בנציון הכהן ז"ל מג'רבה - משקף את ההגיה היהודית בארץ-ישראל מהמאה ה 2 לפנה"ס (אם לא קודם לכן).
