At high school portraits for yearbook in 1974, we were asked what we wanted to say under our photos: my line was "only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings and fly away"... from "the last time I saw Richard", Blue album, Joni Mitchell. She had that much effect on me at the age of 18. I listen to her songs to this day at age 64. She has been with me through many phases of my life. I can't thank her enough!
This woman is definitely “bad-ass” and brave. She indeed has changed the paradigm as so eloquently stated. You might need to expand your listening into some more challenging types of music...Paul Bley, Glenn Gould, Oscar Peterson , Cdn geniuses all, come to mind

It takes a Musical Genius to fully understand and properly explain another Musical Genius. ... Herbie Hancock was the PERFECT CHOICE for this Tribute. .... I cried when I saw how old Joni has become. .... She'll always be my first mad crush and I'll always be looking for a woman just like Her.
Joni's words, music and painting have been immensely important to me since first hearing her as a teenager. Most important artist of the 20th century, nobody else comes close...
Joni is a genius. Her talent spans the artistic spectrum. In 1972 I was a sophomore in college. Joni was playing in DC. I wrote away for tickets (how quaint!) and included a note with my check saying that my friends and I were coming up from central VA, so could we please have good seats. Imagine our surprise and delight when we were ushered to the second row. She was sublime, in a long blue dress with just a guitar and dulcimer and her ethereal voice. And of course her lyrics.
Mid 70’s, tuning my guitar to open D, playing Joni’s ‘Radio’ and getting lost in her words and music. I am 66 now and Joni’s music is and always will be the most beautiful sound for me. Thank you Joni.

If watching this doesn't bring a tear to your eyes you're not human. What a treasure Miss Joni Mitchell is. The world will not see the likes of her again, and how lucky are we to have her here with us during our time on earth.
"There are artists who come along once in a great while who change the whole paradigm of the medium" - that says it all Mr. Hancock. That says it all. Joni was so far ahead of me that it was years before I got old enough to appreciate - fully appreciate - what she was creating. And the moment my mind "got it" was indelible. And musically life changing.

Very moving to see her recovering and getting out again to be with her friends and compatriots. Wishing her nothing but the best and a continued recovery.
Her music was a huge part of my childhood. I was obsessed with the movie practical magic as a child, and her song Case of You plays during a scene. I always found myself going back to that song and falling in love with it over and over again. When I got older, I learned to appreciate her more and listened through all of her albums. Now she's one of my favorite singers of all time. I hope she's finding peace and healing and is healthy at this time in the world. I'm so thankful for her and her art. She deserves nothing but peace.
Because she was way ahead of us! We grew and caught up to her! I sometimes appreciate I kind of went away as she changed...because now I have so much of the art I missed to catch up on! It's all very wonderful today! It's like hearing her fresh as we grow older and now understand and appreciate what we might of missed! She is a lifetime blessing to the way we view our souls. What a journey she took this generation on! Her work will take future generations on that journey as well...as they build on it! She braved a path and had enough tenacity to leave behind the goods!
No one captures a moment like Joni. And yes, she is a badass! She absolutely blazed trail after trail for women and men to follow in, looking great doing it without makeup artists or stylists. Great job Mr. Hancock!
Amazing Joni, a well-deserved award - Bravo! Herbie's eloquent description of Joni's essence rings so very clear in the thoughts of her fans all over the world. I was so very fortunate to have grown up on Joni's music beginning in '67 at the age of 17 and continue to listen to her words of raw emotion & honesty to this day. Thank you Joni for "keeping it real" & wearing your heart on your sleeve. In gratitude from Toronto, Canada.
I can so remember being a kid and hearing "Help Me" playing in the mall while shopping with my mother. Joni's unique sound brings back so many childhood memories. Where did the time go??!
I was driving across the burning desert When I spotted six jet planes Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain It was the hexagram of the heavens It was the strings of my guitar Amelia, it was just a false alarm

there aren't enough awards on this earth who can testify the importance of this genious . Jony has influenced dozens of millions people of any age,at any latitude of this Planet. If you are a musician, you're bound to love her. If you like poetry, she'll make you mad. If you are a simple human being, she'll soon become you're best friend. If you like a simple acoustic guitar, or an entire orchestra , you'll hear her spirit grab your soul istantly. If you like something more sophisticated than a ballad or a piano-voice solo song, Joni is ahead of you with jazzy arrangements and musicians ( C.Mingus, Pastorious, M.Brecker just to name a few, including his mentor that night Herbie Hangkok). Make sure you don't miss anything created by this Fallen Angel because nothing is to be missed.... I thank God for Joni's company, wisdom and art during my last 50 yrs . Long Live Joni !
The last waltz has got to be one of my favorite rock documentary movies of all time.Every musician in that movie was great however four of my favorite singers stand out. Neil young, muddy waters,Bob Dylan....and JONI MITCHELL.
How lucky we were and still are to have such a gifted human being living along with us giving us such glorious work. This woman eclipses the rest. She is our modern day female da Vinci...if you ask me.😌 So much more than the words songwriter, singer, and painter suggest. Joni Mitchell is truly a giant, a gift from God.
She is one special creative artist - painter, poet, yes, a true Renaissance woman, and like me, a person concerned about making art influence world politics. Honor our fragile earth, honor nature, respect our one true home...Don’t t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till you’ve destroyed it...Honor our earth, our oceans, the air we breathe, all things beautiful and fragile that are upon it...❤️🌹❗️🙏
That was the record that woke me up to her genius. I worked at a record store, and the day it came out we played it through 3 times in a row. I was hooked forever. I worked backwards through her earlier records, then eagerly awaited every new one after that. She should have gotten Dylan's Nobel Prize -- or at least shared it. He's never been on my wavelength, but I pick up her signal loud and clear.

The lead singer introduced her as a poet and a singer (they did also cover a Neil young/Buffalo Springfield song) After started listening to her i never looked back.
An angel sent to bring much joy to millions. Thank you and God bless you always Joni.
So moving. It saddens me to see what time does to a once vibrant and energetic human. A national treasure.
I feel so lucky to have witnessed her first tour in 1969! She was AMAZING!
No one captures a moment like Joni. And yes, she is a badass! She absolutely blazed trail after trail for women and men to follow in, looking great doing it without makeup artists or stylists. Great job Mr. Hancock!
I'm so glad that this goddess of song has the strength to stand and speak. Her mind is to glorious to be broken.🙏
Love her music ! ! !
I play Edith and the Kingpin in a loop for about half an hour sometimes because to me it is the perfect musical recording. Perfect in every way.
Who could ever forget her voice.I can’t think of another artist out there today that can match her talents. But then I’m biased.
My Favorite Visionary song writer-one of the most haunting singers-Bravest- most charming Artists that ever lived !!!!
I was driving across the burning desert
When I spotted six jet planes
Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain
It was the hexagram of the heavens
It was the strings of my guitar
Amelia, it was just a false alarm
glad to see she's better
I look at her and I'm in tears...she has written an important part of the
modern music ..an amazing part of modern music..and of my life. Incredible talent!
Followed her Music, so Poetic! Amazing Artist! A pleasure to see her Perform!
Such a great presentation speech by Herbie about such a deserving recipient...she IS a bad ass like he said!
Well-deserved!! I love you, Joni!!
So long overdue that Joni received this award. May the Rock Gods embrace her always! Such amazing ballads she has made.
So long overdue. Truly a musical genius, truly an innovator🌹♥️❗️🙏😊👍
One of my all time favorite song writers
WHAT a LEGEND. Joni your music will always be FANTASTIC...
All the awards in the world cannot equal the deep and emotional gift that Joni Mitchell has given the world. I give the deepest thanks for the music that has made life on this rock a little more bearable. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!
What a great Songwriter & Musician- I met Joni back in the 1960s Yorkville Ave Toronto, at that time I pro a Pro Photographer, sat down and had a conversation with young lady. Congrats Joni well deserved
Like many, I'm a Niagara Falls of tears. I adore Joni, and my life is much fuller of light for having her music and art in it.
The master at a loss for words. I’m lucky to have grown up with her music. Give Blue a listen, it’s great.
Breaks my heart with happiness and sadness. Been listening to Sweet Joni since I was sixteen.
You hit the creative process on the nail...most do not look for fame. Only an outlet ...to express there God given talent.
No I am not after fame...why cause I am famous in my father's eyes... No , I am after fact and truth in the creative process ..

One of a kind, this is a wonderful acknowledgement
What an amazing tribute from Herbie!
wow l love Joni so much she is a beautiful person such wonderful music .
there aren't enough awards on this earth who can testify the importance of this genious .
I see you saved the best for last...jmo....but definitely 4 of the greatest !!!
refresh my memory....?what was HER featured song in film?
@@dosanchoasyou could Google it but I'm pretty sure... Coyote, Shadows And Light, Furry Sings The Blues - JONI
@@petemavus2948 thanks, Pete!
@@dosanchoas You're welcome, Stay Well !!!
How lucky we were and still are to have such a gifted human being living along with us giving us such glorious work.
This woman eclipses the rest. She is our modern day female da Vinci...if you ask me.😌
So much more than the words songwriter, singer, and painter suggest.
Joni Mitchell is truly a giant, a gift from God.
Those eyes speak wisdom.
She was a loose woman who was always pretty full of herself.
@@evanhughes1510 Those who think foully are so - and understand nothing of what Hancock just explained so thoroughly.
@@terrylaguardia6838 sorry but it’s true. She slept with almost everyone
She is one special creative artist - painter, poet, yes, a true Renaissance woman, and like me, a person concerned about making art influence world politics. Honor our fragile earth, honor nature, respect our one true home...Don’t t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till you’ve destroyed it...Honor our earth, our oceans, the air we breathe, all things beautiful and fragile that are upon it...❤️🌹❗️🙏
The LP record.. Hissing of Summer Lawns.. Getting home in the morning after me night shifts.. Had to have me fix of that recording..love it.
Totally agree with you. Personally I think it her best album.
@@ejb7969 As it flies.. One of me favourite recordings is the Bob n The Band's Basement Tapes.. Just makes me happy go lucky as it meanders along.. As good as n vaunted so much that Blood on the Tracks is.. I'd grab a hold of Hissing from a burning house before it. The running order of the title track n Shades of Scarlet coupling up.. Immense.
I was amazed to find the vinyl LPs (new!) of HOSL and DJRD in the cutout bin of the university bookstore in '84!
Such a soundtrack for mony lives over many decades.
At 19 I was hooked on her voice and certainly her guitar playing. At 64 now, I reflect on the times I would put Joni Mitchell's music (on cassettes , youngsters ) in my van 's cassette player to start my long driving vacation trips to put my mind and body at ease after weeks of strenuous work. The emotions and almost tears listening to her sing to me was what I needed. Just hard to put into words and would have made love to her in a NY minute! But been married now for 20 years and I think my wife likes her. Lol! Wishing you well, Joni and keep safe in these troubled times!
By the way, this is my wife's post I'm borrowing. Sorry. Keith is my name.
being here in her time, sense and presence are a gift. she was the first one to touch my soul
Joni had no words...she gave them all to us, and she ran out near the end...we will remember them all...
She was/is one of most brilliant artists I have heard. Joni is the woman that I most admire in music industry, she is the real deal..Listen to her albums, it transcends genre, language, sex , religion, country. I was introduced to her at age 11 from a band from my country MTV acoustic version of The last time i saw richard.. The lead singer introduced her as a poet and a singer (they did also cover a Neil young/Buffalo Springfield song) After started listening to her i never looked back. She is indeed badass like Herbie said. My favorite album is Hejira, i am still trying to figure out about her crazy guitar tunings, it's a lifetime challenge.
