The Helmet Catch finally gets a deep rewind | Super Bowl XLII Giants vs. Patriots

- I love an underdog story. Who doesn’t? It’s not fun to root for winners, there’s no suspense, there’s no drama, there’s no quiet feeling in the back of your mind that “hey, if these guys can win, then maybe someday I can overcome my many many obstacles! Or at least one of ‘em!”
And in Super Bowl XLII, Eli Manning and the Giants were just about the saddest underdog at the pound. After years of early playoff exits and the demoralizing start of the 2007 season, they cindarella’ed their way to the big game. Only to have to play the Tom Brady and the Patriots, who, by the way, had not lost all season. Brady was bolstered by Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Nobody else had a chance.
But an improbable, acrobatic, 4th quarter catch in the final drive of the Super Bowl was the Patriots undoing. And who made the catch? David Tyree, an underdog himself! A special teams player who forced people to respect him as a wide out.
I’d call this the ultimate David v Goliath story, but it doesn’t quite work because the team that represents David is the New York Giants. Totally ruins the metaphor. But still, all in all, this game is a historic underdog tale, worthy of a deep rewind.

This isn't just regular Eli, this is
A D V A N C E D E L I
Aiden Rae thought they were going to Peyton
Clutch Eli
Only Eli Manning would have a mediocre career overall, known for his interceptions and weird faces, but also be the clutchest guy on the field for 8 playoff games and become a two-time champion and Super Bowl MVP over Tom Brady and the Patriots
ELIte Eli
@@rogerpope9948 much like Ryan Tannehill is all the sudden a good QB without Adam Gase, Eli was clutch because he was handed the two minute drill and Kevin Gilbride was no longer calling plays at that point. Everytime that happened Eli flew. Gilbride had the most vanilla offense ever with his aggressively consistent first down off tackle run play. Eli in his prime was great as evidence by the fact that every time he was given play calling ability the Giants O marched. They don't win any Super Bowls without him. Period.
The only bad thing about this play is Joe Buck's call. He sounds like he's reading his grocery list, not calling one of the wildest plays in NFL history.
Hes said before he thought he dropped it at first, and his lack of response was him realizing the catch was made in real time
I think the Buress call makes up for it.
Aiden Rae Not really, any Announcer could’ve made that Buress call
Well that's like... your opinion, man.
Mike breen should dub the footage over with a couple bangs.
Andrew Lewis lol who could listen at that call and honestly say “He did a great job”
Something that gets forgotten about this moment is that this was David Tyree's last NFL reception.
They also didn't mention that he dropped EVERY. SINGLE. PASS. in practice the day before, like to the point where the other receivers were trying to console him and say they were "sure he'd still get to play at all"
Grant Maurer he almost dropped this one too, he didn’t put both hands up he had to pin that to his helmet. His helmet. What a rediculous play by a rediculous player
Jake Graham what ridiculous spelling by a ridiculous person
Jake Graham You’re criticizing Tyree for this play? I just want to make sure I have this right.
TheGodYouWishYouKnew I think criticizing is the wrong word. More just amazed that a player of Tyree’s level caught such a tough pass in one of the biggest NFL moments of all time
Joe Buck called one of the best catches in history, in a Super Bowl, like he was trying not to wake someone up
Imagine having a chance to be the voice of the moment where a team goes 19-0 and wins the super bowl.....and this bumbling stumbling idiot throws a Hail Mary into the middle of the field and then.......so I can understand why He wasn’t that enthusiastic
I'll never understand that hate for Buck. I love the dude. So many memories are associated with his voice.
I got a chance to talk to him once, and he says he always tries to stay reserved in moments like this in case it ends up getting broken up or he misread they play. I think he is a fantastic announcer
Captain_E10 i agree, I like his style a lot, and besides, in this moment he had no way of knowing (and perhaps no reason to think) the Giants were going to continue on for a TD, and he would’ve been far from the only one who couldn’t tell what the hell just happened before the Jumbotron replayed it.
Okay to his credit, he’s listened to feedback, his call on the Minneapolis Miracle was excellent
I'm genuinely surprised that they haven't covered this yet.
Same goes for Patrick Kane's Cup winning goal in 2010
@@felixmalamud5022 lol both of those are things I wish that didn't happen. That and throw in Liverpool 2005.
Also the single that won the 1991 World Series
@JTR they should definitely do the 05 Champions League final
Hadn't*
As lucky as this throw and catch was, Eli would do it again to the Patriots 4 years later in another Super Bowl with one of the best throws and catch in NFL history.
Still don't understand why Rodney Harrison doesn't be himself n just blow tyree up there. No way he holds on to that if Harrison pops him instead of playing the ball
- I never cared for Eli. BUT the man beat Tom Brady TWICE....in the Superbowl. Brady has 7 rings to his name and one of the greatest comebacks in the Superbowl against ATL, but ELI freakin' Manning beat the Pats and Brady TWICE in the Superbowl.
HOW! Eli is in the Hall of Very Good but in the Superbowl? He's at least a 3rd round HOFer.
Being a giants fan, This easily could have been the greatest sports moment I’ve witnessed in my lifetime
Easily the best NFL play of all time. So much history wrapped up into it. No play has ever meant so much as this one had. David versus Goliath and true to fashion done in such an immaculate way.
Maningham's was a better throw and maybe even a better catch but I still can't deny that when I rewatch Tyree's catch it gives me chills like no other ever has or ever will
@@Josh-ys4br you’re probably right, but just everything surrounding the tyree play was legendary.. it wasn’t even so much that it was such a great play, but that it was such a miraculous play.. the fact the patriots were undefeated, Manning should’ve been sacked and the game should’ve been over but somehow the stars all aligned and a legit miracle happened lol
Honestly I think the tuck rule, although not as dramatic, was the greatest moment in football history due to its deciding which franchise would become the dynasty of the 2000s and for setting the precedent of nfl rules, refereeing, and the genesis of the Instant Replay in sports.

Washlaq writers for this channel are seriously underrated
Omg i loved that quote
The one question ive had this entire series:
Does that car VCR actually work still?
Yes! Though it is not a VCR, it's an honest to god rewinder. For you younguns, back in the day, you had separate devices specifically to rewind tapes. And 'tapes' were like youtube but different
@@SecretBaseSBN like youtube but different, that's funny!
Secret Base and if you didn’t rewind a rental before returning, you could have a fee applied to your Blockbuster account that was charged against your next rental.
@@SecretBaseSBN Who owned it originally? Or was it purchased for the purpose of using it in these videos?
Secret Base what does that even mean
Incredibly impressive but overshadowed by the catch, is Eli Manning having to Houdini his way out of a sack
Multiple uncalled holding penalties on the Giants O Line didn't hurt.
@@stevejohnson2052 they literally didn't show the aerial camera or the end camera because it showed clear holding. NFL is WWE though
@@MPHswayze They could call holding on every play you big baby. Are you seriously blaming the refs for the Pats losing this xD
@@David-sl6xf 🥅 s moving huh? They literally don't show Eli throwing the ball in helmet catch replays. It's the worst holding no-call in NFL history
@@MPHswayze What do you mean "they don't show holding in catch replays?" Who is "they?" And the craziest part of the play is the helmet catch so of course they're going to focus on that. Are you stupid? Also that's probably not true anyways, I'm sure they've shown Eli escaping the sack more than once in highlight replays. You're just another big baby conspiracy theorist crying because you didn't like the outcome of a football game. Grow up
“Its about damn time”
for sure!
....And all to be blown away by the appalling voice making the video impossibile to view anyway.

That catch man…like his Mom came down From heaving and pushed it against his helmet for a seconds as he fell 4 feet onto his back. Incredible.
I remember reading an article the next day titled “19 and O no” and thought it was the funniest thing.
This was my first memory of sports in general, watching this super bowl with a family of Giants fans and be so excited by that catch that I beat the ground with a stick for no reason in particular.
The Greatest Memory I will forever have in Sports, Winning this Superbowl meant everything to me. To this day I've never been more proud of any of my teams like I was of the 07-08 NY Football Giants.
I watched this game in a weird nightclub in Florence, Italy. My buddy who I was with was from Jersey, and was so excited about this win that he ninja kicked a street sign as we walked home at like 4 AM. I was never able to find that nightclub ever again, it, like the Giants winning that game, was like a surreal dream.

The joe buck call ruined the whole video
PelchLuke DID YOU KNOW JUAN SOTO WAS ONLY 20 YEARS OLD IN HIS FIRST WORLD SERIES?!
Hunter Wylie bro WHAT
One day we're going to learn that Joe Buck is on medication for some chronic condition, which is why he's all but incapable of sounding excited.
He hates all New York teams
It's easy to say that now but imagine if he flipped out and Tyree dropped it. Sure it's kinda cringe that he didn't immediately get excited over one of the biggest plays of the 2000's but it'd also be cringe if he celebrated an incomplete pass
That was the day I became a NY Giants fan. This team was the most underdog story ever
No one but Giants fans will ever understand the pure, raw, fully intoxicating joy that team made possible.
The New York Football Giantkillers.
The greatest moment of my childhood as a Giants fan, this whole story is everything I love about sports.
this made me cry, and not cause i'm a pats fan, cause i'm a giants fan and this was one of the greatest moments i've witnessed i sports ever
This was one of the greatest cinderella stories I ever had the honors of witnessing. I remember the dallas game, and i remember the packers game thinking they were gonna get crushed. After the packers game I knew they had a shot but c'mon. Everyone in the world thought the 2007 pats team would go on to be the greatest team that ever lived.... In the great words of kanye west I guess we'll never know
Not mentioned here:
The Giants and Patriots did meet up in a Week 17 matchup where the Giants lead at halftime. The Giants would lose a very close game but they already knew what the Pats were capable of heading into the SB. I felt that could've been very useful info to know.
As a patriots fan, this really hurts but it's also about time you covered this. Tyree deserves more credit than he gets.
As a lifelong Giants fan, I will remember that catch for the rest of my life.
Of course Joe Buck ruins one of the greatest moments in NFL history with a monotone call
And it is caught by Tyree.
He said that he wasn’t sure if it was a catch or not so his call wasn’t the most exciting, but the buress td makes up for it
@@Killatrav87 but still, gotta say like "oh my gosh is that a catch?!"

I remember when the Giants barely lost to the pats in the last game of season I predicted that the Giants would get to the Superbowl and beat the Patriots and won a bunch of sodas lol
I remember some folks on the radio at the time saying the Giants had what looked like a dialed back playbook for week 17, because that game did not matter to them on the grand scheme of things.
@@michaelchan4479 I remember that too and you had to think even with a dialed back playbook they nearly did what no other team did that year with full playbooks

There are a lot of life lessons to take out of this season. Disclaimer-Im a Giant fan, and this run was the best thing Ive ever seen one of my teams do, easy. So I had a front row seat, I can remember every game all year. Nobody thought, but for the team itself and the diehards, that they would ever get past Dallas, I can tell you that. And then what happened in Green Bay, to this...absolutely monumental. With the ability of hindsight, it was the doubt going into the season, the losses, the 4INT game against the Vikings, the 38-35 loss week 17; it was the adversity the team overcame to do this that blows me away and really motivates me in my life to this day.
The Road Warriors they were called. The only folks capable of beating them were angry New Yorkers.
I remember thinking the same thing about Dallas; they were going to send the G Men home. The impact of beating that Packers team gets lost sometimes but you hit the nail on the head- incredibly momentous to say the least!
I think you understate the importance of the Week 17 game to the Giants' win. They had an idea of what would work against the Patriots, they tried it, and it almost worked. They fine-tuned their plan and it kept them in striking position for this moment.
"With momentum behind them the Giants politely moved out of the way and let the momentum pass them by." I died.
Dan Patrick deserves some props; he predicted a Giants win on Letterman that week.
As a patriots fan I can definitely say I cried the whole time

Joe Buck ruins awesome moments like this
He’s much better now but yeah during this era he ruined a lot of iconic moments
Artie Lange did a good job of ripping his show apart on hbo
That is a disgusting act by Randy Moss
@Kyiv Frederick He's just dispassionately describing what happens, there's no sense of excitement or suspense. This was an incredible moment in superbowl history but he reports it as if he's announcing any other catch. Has done the same thing on numerous other occasions.
David F DIGGS SIDELINE TOUCHDOWN UNBELIEVABLE. VIKINGS WIN IT.
An absolutely glorious and beautiful moment. I would've mentioned that Tyree's moment was even more improbable considering that in the last practice before the game he couldn't catch the clap in an 1800s brothel.
He got it together in the game itself. He caught three passes. The first was nothing special, but then near the beginning of the fourth quarter he caught a touchdown pass. And then, of course, the Helmet Catch.
His last two passes were the most impactful passes he ever caught in his career, and without them the Giants would not have won. Just like the rest of the team, Tyree peaked at just the right time.
At long last: the play that this series was meant for :)
Dude, I love Clara's narration/commentary, her deadpan delivery and sarcasm are the best.
“Good Night and Good Game” is such a great way to close the video too!!
I remember seeing this live. As a Giants fan, it’s always good seeing Tom Brady taken down a peg by Big Blue.
After 06 the Manning bros were his nightmare.
As a Colts fan, I was rooting for Peyton's younger brother. We already had our championship; it was Eli's turn. Oh, and the Patriots were our big rivals, which made this victory even sweeter.

I was living in NJ at the time. Just came home from work to my roommates watching this game. I walked in to see Eli break away and toss to Tyree then watched Plaxico catch the winner.
It was like the entire state exploded in cheers.
Watching this again for 99 times because I love the Giants. But I gotta say, love your voice!
This is the team I learned to love football watching. This was a lot of fun to watch! Love advanced Eli haha.
I have been waiting SO LONG for this video! I will always cherish the memory of watching this game with my dad, almost jumping through the ceiling together when it was all over.
I do gotta say, I don't know that the way you covered their playoff run really did it justice.. I mean, I remember watching the pregame shows all the way back to the Wild Card round at Tampa, NOBODY was picking us to win, and we won them all, on the ROAD no less. But, I could just be nit-picking.

Here's an idea for a untitled episode. Wes welker. Went to three superbowls with Brady and peyton manning and didnt win any
As a Cowboys fan, the Giants' 2 superbowls against the Patriots are the only time I've ever been happy to see them win.
Surprised that you didn't talk about their Week 17 Matchup that year, I think it definitely adds to the lore. Giants didn't have to beat NE but they tried their hardest to give them their first loss. Five weeks later they would get the job done.
I remember that the NFL and their partner networks scrambled to get that game broadcasted on basic cable because it was originally only on the NFL network. Was on NBC IIRC, though that could be wrong. Anyways nobody expected it to be much of a game and a lot of folks figured "why bother" for getting the game to air for everybody but they tuned in anyways "just to see history" and then that game went down to the final two minutes. Wasn't the closest regular season game the Pats had that year, that goes to the Baltimore Ravens, but it was damn close.
I don't know if it's too soon to request or not, but a rewinder of Brayden Point's 5OT game winner would be a pretty cool video to do a rewinder on. I know it was only a first round playoff series, but the fact that the first game in the long awaited rematch between the Blue Jackets and Lightning went to a 5th overtime was the shot in the arm the Lightning needed to make the deep playoff push that they're currently on. Just a year prior, they had one of the best regular seasons ever seen in the NHL, and then they got IMMEDIATELY swept by the Blue Jackets. The context and history is there for a pretty good episode of rewinder
My god, I always forget how boring and uninterested Joe Buck sounds on that call until I hear it again. Shame that such a historic moment has such flaccid commentary.

Eli is the opposite of Peyton... Just infuriating and always coming up short in the regular season but dominating the playoffs. Lol

Speaking of underdog stories, I would love to see a rewind of Aleksandr Karelin's loss to Rulon Gardner in the 2000 Olympics Gold Medal Wrestling match.
