Yeah, Sly Stone should definitely be on the list. He had one of most soulful voices I've ever heard. The man could blow back in the day. He's also an amazing songwriter, producer and musician. And his band Sly & The Family Stone were extremely influential.
As I was watching this video I thought of the same thing that you mentioned near the end. I do believe that these lists are made to cause big controversy. I mean, Celine Dion, Jim Morrison, Sting, George Harrison. All 3 of them are at least top 50 in my opinion. My top 5 are probably: 1) Paul 2) Lennon 3) Harrison 4) Freddie 5) Morrison Also it seems weird to me that Anna and Frida from Abba, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel and Peter Gabriel are not in the 200 but maybe that's just me.
Arthur Brown (aka "The God of Hellfire") should have made the list. The man essentially invented heavy metal vocals. He's also skilled at blues vocals. A phenomenal talent in general!

I just read this list yesterday. I must admit, as talented as Aretha Franklin was, I wouldn’t go as far to say she is the greatest singer of all time. There are so many more artists with greater talent and influence. I am also a HUGE Bob Dylan fan, but putting him at 15 was a pretty odd choice considering the polarizing nature of his singing. Michael Jackson at 86 is insane, and I'm sure it has almost nothing to do with his actual music. Hi Larry. I check this video to know your opinion about this list. For me is a very "American" list, more focused in good American singers than other great singers from different parts of the world. Its difficult the comparision of male and female voices and different music genres. As Mexican, I could say Vicente Fernandez and Juan Gabriel, both dead, were excellent singers of Mexican folk music The same I could say about Rocio Durcal (Spain) and Mercedes Sosa (Argentina) and the pop music of their countries. Agree with you including the many "unknown ones" why Jim Morrison, Elvis Costello, Phil Collins, Olivia Newton-John, Tom Jones,Agnetta from Abba, Michael McDonald,Gary Numan, Frankie Valli, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel or Barry and Robin Gibb were left out, it beats me
I suppose they had to include the legend in his own lifetime Bob Dylan, in spite of the fact that his voice sounds like the see-sawing whine of next door’s hedge cutter.
steve winwood, peter gabriel, paul simon, art garfunkle, madonna, david crosby, jon anderson, richie havens, derik shulman, grace slick, jerry garcia...
I definitely think that Bob Dylan deserves to be ranked very high on the list. You don't have to have a pretty voice to be a powerful singer. All one has to do is listen to a song like "If You See Her, Say Hello" to know how great a singer he is. No one else could sing that song more powerfully. He's also the master of phrasing.
I agree. He does what a good singer should do. He makes you hang on his every word. Part of that is because of his great lyrics, but it's also because of the way he sings. Like the way he sings the song title "Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again" slightly differently, each time he sings it. That's a nice artistic touch. I would put him around the same place Rolling Stone did, at about # 15.
And for me Bob Dylan’s voice is like nails on a blackboard 😂 if this was the list of best songwriters then Bob Dylan deserves to be ranked high, but best singers? Hell no, he shouldn’t have been included at all.
Ozzy should be on the list for his work on the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage albums by Sabbath, he absolutely brought it on those albums, but to have him higher than both Dio and Halford is criminal.
I think RS could approach such a list with much more objectivity. They should rank according to the amount of influence and copycats that a singer produced. For example, David Bowie’s vocal stylings greatly influenced post-punk, new wave and the New Romantic movement. That’s why he should be much higher. My vote for MIA would be David Byrne of the Talking Heads. You can hear his influence on older artists like Adrian Belew and especially on the Indie-rock movement of the 2000s (Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem).
notable ommisions not mentioned in no particular order: paul rodgers,ian gillian,david covererdale,bruce dickinson,brad delp,robin zander,layne staley,mike patton,lenny kravitz,meatloaf,pat benetar,anne wilson,sebastian bach and even madonna and i probably overlooked another dozen😩

Off the top of my head, here's few I'm missing: Levi Stubbs, Beth Gibbons (Portishead), Jim Morrison, James Carr, Peter Gabriel, Ian Gillian, John Lydon, Tim Buckley (Jeff's father), Karen Dalton and Paul Rodgers. Also I would have had Sandy Denny and Solomon Burke way higher.
Loved your reaction to axl rose! Totally agreed with your comments on Bob Dylan and many artists should be higher. I mostly like rock music, but as I got older I came to appreciate singers like Frank Sinatra. I think Johnny Mathis should definitly be on this list. PJ Harvey ahead of Barbara Streisand. I once got a free cd of PJ from a record club. I sold it. The girl behind the counter liked it so I got a few bucks! For a hoot watch some live footage of the Yeah yeah yeahs with #184 Karen O. Not a great singer but it is fascinating to watch how she got away with so much with so little! The band was actually not bad.
The man with the golden voice Mat Munro, Canadas best Burton Cummings, Australians John Farnham and Judith Durham. Janis Joplin, John Fogerty, Ian Anderson. Prince, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Chester Bennington, Steve Marriott, Tom Jones.
Strange list, man. For me from top of my head - top 10: John Lennon Freddie Mercury Van Morrison Robert Plant Tom Waits Elvis Presley Ryan Adams David Byron David Bowie Elvis Costello
I knew Geoff Tate of Queensrÿche wouldn’t be on this list, but it would’ve been so nice if he were included somewhere in the list. Unbelievable vocalist of the 80’s who doesn’t get the credit amid the masses that he should.
They didn’t even add Bruce Dickinson or you could say Paul Dianno, they also omitted a few greats in the vocalist grunge department, the biggest being Layne Staley and for me personally Anthony Kedis. Also there wasn’t Jim Morrison which was a bit odd, but I think the problem with the list is that its not a top 200 singers list, its more of a top performers list mixed in with singing as another half. Some genre didn’t really get a lot of representation mostly metal and a few others that I can’t fully think of. But I think one of the other biggest misses was Nat King Cole, Celine Dion, Rick James, and Daryl Hall or John Oates.
Neil and Tim Finn...Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins...Daryl.Hall...Billy Joel...joke list...James Taylor so many david crosby...Deep Purple lead singer...lots and lots
They need to break up that to rock vocalists. They find these obscure vocalists from Spain or wherever they come from. However they won't pick for example the Sparks lead singer.
Sinatra and Streisand should be in the top ten. Ian Gillian of Deep Purple ( Jesus Christ Superstar) and Bruce Dickinson, also. Dio, Plant, Presley, Daultry, higher. Who are 1/4 of the people on this list?
It’s really nice to see Karen Carpenter on the list, but I would’ve placed her in the top ten. She was undoubtedly the best female pop vocalist of her generation. A voice like no other.
You are at 80 or so at mo Larry....and I'm hoping Nina Simone is near top....her voice is the best for me. My top 10 off top head Bowie Nina Simone Mikael Arkerfeldt Howlin Wolf Roy Orbison (agree....I have several albums and whilst not my fave....undeniable voice) Michael Stipe Ozzy Osbourne Robert Plant Sandy Denny Kate Bush Just missing, Prince, Scott Walker, George Michael, Jeff Buckley, Tracey Chapman, Freddie Mercury, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Bjork, Trish Keenen, Linda Perhacs, Bob Dylan, anyone who sang for Nightwish, Lennon / McCartney / Harrison, Marvyn Gay, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke, Johnny Cash, Anni Lennox, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Layne Staley...oh yes Larry and The Captain of Beefhearts! ....and nearly forgot the just as great Bruce Dickinson!!....ok basically all decent choices on this list....lol👻💀🖤.. Whitney, Elvis and Adele kick ass even though like you say too Larry, not my kind of music
Hello and happy new year Sir For me John Lennon is number one Number two should be Jeff Lynn and it’s a shame that he was not even in the list My number three is David Bowie Number four is Elton John and number five Paul McCartney
They, especially Rolling Stone always place John way above Paul whatever the discussion. The truth is people who want to be perceived as being hip and cool know they are better off to identify with John as their man. Sadly when we lost John these same people made him into a martyr. However there is hope in that people who are either musically aware and or also honest with themselves are now acknowledging McCartney's genius. John had a very distinctive vocal and when for example he blasted out Twist and Shout it was raw energy pouring out. Awesome stuff. However McCartney has been playing music for the most part of his 80 years and no-one can deny that when it comes to versatility he is incomparable. In fact many would place him at number one because this is a guy who can melt your heart with Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Warm and Beautiful and Hear Today and still belt out a rocker like Helter Skelter, I'm Down, oh! Darling, Hi Hi Hi, Save Us, the list could go on for pages. He too can croon, use falsetto, sing blues and soul i.e. Souvenir,...he can do it all. I doubt any other artist could have every genre of singing in their can do list. I have even heard Paul scat! For Paul he has always had to sit back and watch his genius be overlooked. He has suffered in the eyes of the trend setters due much to his perceived normality - why being normal equates to less talent I fail to see! Yoko, whether you love or loathe her did everything in her power to promote John as a Saint and until recent years always made digs at Paul's songs etc... Yes Macca has written some dire crap but so to has every single rock. pop artist in history. When, however, one looks at the totality of his musical catalogue the vast majority is superb to genius standard. Now I appreciate this video is about singers not composers but that then harks back to my previous comment. That being, Paul can sing anything and without sounding forced. It is time for honest reappraisal and for those in the know to speak up on his behalf. Wouldn't it be great if the masses could give such credit prior to someone's passing. Paul McCartney is a genius but sadly half the world don't seem to realise that he was at the very least an equal to John. John was superior with lyrics I acknowledge that aspect. Yet as a musician and a singer Paul McCartney remains the top. His name with live on for generations just as Beethoven, Chopin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Sinatra, and so on and on. I doubt somehow that the same will apply to probably 100 of those included in this list. Mariah Carey at number 5! Does anyone, even her fans, believe she will be part of the fabric of musical history for decades to come? Paul McCartney, family man, ex-Beatle, world's most successful solo artist, composer, artist, and singer is not just a Sir but truly a phenomenon. The genuine genius among giants.
@@shiroibasketshoes that is an absolutely fair position to hold. I really only don't like Rudolph the Red Nose Reggae and the medley of Red Rose Speedway. I don't think that makes me critical in any way... as I state I think he a genius and love 99.9% of everything he has composed and/or played. He is one of the best bass players of all time, can play an array of instruments and can sing brilliantly in any genre. An amazing talent who also deserves greater appreciation for his visual art works and childrens books. As I am rambling ion I would also add I adore The Liverpool Oratorio and believe it is highly underrated. His composition Celebration from Standing Stone is sublime. You mention Linda. What a tremendous person. A loyal loving wife and mother, activist for animal rights and the environment and always there to support Paul. Her harmonies with Paul, alongside Denny make for one of the most familiar and well loved by thousands. The harmonies of the Wings period were unique and Linda has so much to do with that. Cheers keep on enjoying Macca's music.
@@markv.5962 As a feminist fan of The Shaggs and Jandek, who also owns Linda McCartney’s "Wide Prairie” CD, and the Wings albums including “Wild Life,” and the Suzy and the Red Stripes “Seaside Woman” 12 inch, I would not bash Linda McCartney’s singing no matter what she sounded like. But I do like her singing on “Cook Of The House” and just listened to both Wings’ version and her album’s version which are essentially the same great fun tune. I like Yoko Ono's vocal experiments, too.
I agree with you in two things, McCartney is #1, and Elton at 100 is just a joke. We had enough of RS, stop propagating RS fucking rankings. And remember, they will publish a very different list in ten years, they live of this.
I have a hard time comparing rock singers to pop singers really. It’s a hard list to make and there are definitely good singers left out. Like I don’t think I saw Lionel Richie on the list. Also it’s hard to compare female singers to male singers. Some are belters and some are more soulful.
No Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel on the list?? Did they cancel each other out? Also Peter Gabriel is a glaring omission.. and for Classic Rock.. Paul Rodgers? wtf?..
I would have Elvis at number 1 and Bjork at 2. Don't worry, many mispronounce her name. As she said it rhymes with Jerk, as in Byerk and not Byork. Anyway, the list is very RnB heavy. I would have included Bon Scott. I am glad Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford and the lovely Ronnie Spector made the list. I love Chuck Berry, Axl Rose and Iggy Pop’s vocals. I thought Taylor Swift would have been much higher. I am surprised there was no Drake or Kanye but glad at the same time. I am very surprised that the yodelling brakemao Jimmie Rodgers made it.... fair enough but it wouldn't surprise me if they meant Jimmy Rogers or the other Jimmie Rodgers...... I think most artists are just names to RS journalists -"He sounds cool. Let's check Wikipedia and aed them to the list". Kurt Cobain? My trouble with that is RS hated Nirvana and the like back in day and that was one of the reasoning I stopped buying the magazine because of their focus on older music and lack of interest in emerging alternative artists.
I don't agree with this list either. I actually met Lou Reed in person in a Blairstown, New Jersey diner. He was friendly while journalist Anthony DeCurtis showed me his middle left finger and told me to "get lost." Jim Morrison would be my number1., followed by Sir Paul, John Lennon...

Agree with you including the many "unknown ones" why Jim Morrison, Elvis Costello, Phil Collins, Olivia Newton-John, Tom Jones,Agnetta from Abba, Michael McDonald,Gary Numan, Frankie Valli, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel or Barry and Robin Gibb were left out, it beats me
Agree with you on Agnetha Faltskog plus Anni-frid Lyngstad of Abba. I wrote to Rolling Stone to ask them why but no reply.
Ranking PJ Harvey ahead of Barbra Streisand pretty much sums up how ridiculous this whole list is. Nothing else really needs to be said.
Barbra Streisand should have been at least in the top 10. She could sing as great and maybe even better than Aretha Franklin. And I'm a fan of both.
I love his vocals on his album "Slow Train Coming" especially, but I totally get some people not liking his vocals.
Ozzy is on the list about 117
and where the hell is the greatest of them all SARAH VAUGHAN ....
Absolutely, couldn´t agree more!
Yep, very good point about David Byrne. Great in his own right but also hugely influential.
I would have put also Ray Davies, Donovan, Steve Marriot, Ian Anderson, Ian Gillan and many others on the list.
Good list. I'd add Eric Burdon.
notable ommisions not mentioned in no particular order: paul rodgers,ian gillian,david covererdale,bruce dickinson,brad delp,robin zander,layne staley,mike patton,lenny kravitz,meatloaf,pat benetar,anne wilson,sebastian bach and even madonna and i probably overlooked another dozen😩

Anyone that doesn't sing in English? How open you are.
Alison Krause or Martina McBride for Female country vocalist, although they did include some legendary singers..
The fact that it is Rolling Stone should tell you that it is going to be lame.
This Rolling Stone list is hilarious.. Barbra Streisand below The Weeknd.. craziness. Elton at 100?!
Musically, Streisand can turn straw to gold; her talent for reinterpreting songs is without peer.
Where's Glen Campbell ?
Where is Ann Wilson???
Whitney Houston has an amazing voice not my cup of tea but what an amazing voice
Greg Lake, Peter Hammill and Peter Gabriel should be on the list!
"would you know my name, if i saw you in heaven" - Eric Clapton
Layne Staley should be top 10.
Roy Orbison should be in the top 5, maybe even at number 1 for me.
The man with the golden voice Mat Munro, Canadas best Burton Cummings, Australians John Farnham and Judith Durham. Janis Joplin, John Fogerty, Ian Anderson. Prince, Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, Chester Bennington, Steve Marriott, Tom Jones.
Strange list, man. For me from top of my head - top 10:
John Lennon
Freddie Mercury
Van Morrison
Robert Plant
Tom Waits
Elvis Presley
Ryan Adams
David Byron
David Bowie
Elvis Costello
Bryan Adams or Ryan Adams?
Damn! I wasn’t on the list either Larry!❤
An insipid list by an insipid magazine!
I was hoping you'd do a rant video yourself! 😀
It may surprise you to learn that there are many great singers who do not sing in English.
Sly stone definitely deserves to be on the list. And I'm still mad about MJ being at 86!😡😡
Sting should be on the list.
You have to listen to Francoise Hardy. French 60s singer, its beautiful
Your a Hoot! Love your review!
They left out so many iconic singers like Joe Cocker, Dean Martin, Jim Morrison etc.
Joe Cocker, ✌✌
I don’t consider Joe Cocker to be a “good” singer. His voice worked for his style of music, but he wasn’t a good singer 🤷🏽♀️
The contributions of Siouxsie Sioux must never be forgotten. Poly Styrene but no Siouxsie? Nope. No one was doing what Siouxsie was until she did it.
It’s really nice to see Karen Carpenter on the list, but I would’ve placed her in the top ten. She was undoubtedly the best female pop vocalist of her generation. A voice like no other.
Where is Neil Diamond in the list
Elvis Costello
Sting
Dean Martin
Pavarotti
Christine McVie
Where are they?!
None of the Bee Gees either...
How about a Canadian Studmuffin top 200? 😊
Mick Jagger would be my absolute no.1 front man.
You are at 80 or so at mo Larry....and I'm hoping Nina Simone is near top....her voice is the best for me.
My top 10 off top head
Bowie
Nina Simone
Mikael Arkerfeldt
Howlin Wolf
Roy Orbison (agree....I have several albums and whilst not my fave....undeniable voice)
Michael Stipe
Ozzy Osbourne
Robert Plant
Sandy Denny
Kate Bush
Just missing, Prince, Scott Walker, George Michael, Jeff Buckley, Tracey Chapman, Freddie Mercury, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Bjork, Trish Keenen, Linda Perhacs, Bob Dylan, anyone who sang for Nightwish, Lennon / McCartney / Harrison, Marvyn Gay, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke, Johnny Cash, Anni Lennox, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Layne Staley...oh yes Larry and The Captain of Beefhearts! ....and nearly forgot the just as great Bruce Dickinson!!....ok basically all decent choices on this list....lol👻💀🖤..
Whitney, Elvis and Adele kick ass even though like you say too Larry, not my kind of music
Where is Tom Jones ?
Mars Attacks!
Plus Jack Jones, Gloria Jones, Rickie Lee Jones, George Jones, Grace Jones, Davy Jones and The Jones Girls!
Mc and Celine ❤❤❤❤
The most egregious omission in my opinion is Harry Nilsson.
Good one
Absolutely
Hello and happy new year Sir
For me John Lennon is number one
Number two should be Jeff Lynn and it’s a shame that he was not even in the list
My number three is David Bowie
Number four is Elton John and number five Paul McCartney
Sincerely that Rolling Stone list is pure crap
McCartney at 26? What are the staff of Rolling stone stoned on?
Agreed!
I like Wings better then The Beatles and I would not call anything Paul (or Linda) McCartney has done dire crap.
@@shiroibasketshoes go listen to cook of the house
@@markv.5962 As a feminist fan of The Shaggs and Jandek, who also owns Linda McCartney’s "Wide Prairie” CD, and the Wings albums including “Wild Life,” and the Suzy and the Red Stripes “Seaside Woman” 12 inch, I would not bash Linda McCartney’s singing no matter what she sounded like. But I do like her singing on “Cook Of The House” and just listened to both Wings’ version and her album’s version which are essentially the same great fun tune. I like Yoko Ono's vocal experiments, too.
The jazz selections feel like token choices--plenty of jazz greats that could blow the doors off many of these pop stars.
Chet Baker was a confusing selection for this list. Amazing trumpet player, but thin voice.
I agree with you in two things, McCartney is #1, and Elton at 100 is just a joke. We had enough of RS, stop propagating RS fucking rankings. And remember, they will publish a very different list in ten years, they live of this.
It's clearly cultural marxified.
I have a hard time comparing rock singers to pop singers really. It’s a hard list to make and there are definitely good singers left out. Like I don’t think I saw Lionel Richie on the list. Also it’s hard to compare female singers to male singers. Some are belters and some are more soulful.
Ronnie James Dio was # 1 to me. And Pat Benatar missing from the list, She has great range.
Dio is definitely my #1 as well.
LOL...no Eric Burdon, no Jim Morrison, no Ian Gillan and no Steve Marriott. List is total garbage.
check out their last list (2008) if you wanna feel better
Haha I love Dylan too but that’s way too high. Where is Barry Gibbs?
I don't agree with this list either. I actually met Lou Reed in person in a Blairstown, New Jersey diner. He was friendly while journalist Anthony DeCurtis showed me his middle left finger and told me to "get lost." Jim Morrison would be my number1., followed by Sir Paul, John Lennon...
Isn't that the same diner that was used in the film Friday The 13th(1980)?
In terms of loved voices I have a thing for Chris Rea, and yeah Jim Morrison has to go down as one of the very best
What's the point of comparing Bjork to Ella Fitzgerland or either of them to Axl Rose? There just isn't one.
