      @@JAWrightonline True, but during the 80's and 90's, I remember reading theories that the reason why the team lost was because of a psychological effect caused by wearing weak colors. Which is ridiculous, of course, but I think it's the reason why the Buccaneers changed their uniform design. It's worth noting that the Buccaneers are still the losing most team in NFL history, despite changing their uniforms. Which proves that the uniforms had nothing to do with it.

    Bucs owner, Hugh Culverhouse, refused to pay Doug Williams what even coach John McKay knew he was worth, prompting him to leave for the USFL in the off-season. The end result? The Bucs went 2-14 in 1983 and didn't make the playoffs again for 14 years. When Williams was named MVP of Super Bowl XXII, Tampa Bay fans must have looked at Culverhouse with total disgust.

      I always believed John McKay to be one of the best judges of talent. Culverhouse probably held John McKay back from doing his job properly. You just gave one example. There are probably others. Seems some owners like to play the " I'm the owner, so you are going to do what I say, even if you disagree" card. Jerry Jones might be one of those.

    McKay's Tampa Bay team was just about to get over the hump, and the Cowboys were aging. Had they kept Williams, the history of the 1980s NFC might read a lot differently today (definitely the NFC Central anyway). The Cowboys were always the ultimate obstacle (kind of like they were for Favre in the 90s), and Tampa almost had them in this season. They were probably a year away from peaking...and then Culverhouse screwed everyone over. (Sigh) What could've been....

      JayEd KC 80’s cowboy games often time resulted in a loss. As for the last game of Landry’s coaching career...that was a great day: we lost; Green Bay won. We drafted Aikman. They took Mandrich at number 2. Rest is beautiful history.
      Landry has to go.
      Here’s a book for you to read: “Breakthrough Boys” the story of the 71’ cowboys. Goes into detail of Landry’s handling of QB situation. Not a high water mark on his resume for sure. Landry meant a lot to organization but Jimmy was their best coach. Hands down.

    Buccaneers defense was great that year.
    Hugh green was great and underrated.
    Buccaneers 1st logo was great.
    Buccaneers should have focused on red on their uniforms than orange.
    This game was the start of the buccaneers following into a losing team.
    By not resigning Doug Williams was a huge mistake.

    At half time it looks to me that Williams is throwing the game.this is his last time playing for the bucks.only getting 120k a year.12 back up quarterbacks are making more.....Williams has definitely retired from the bucs but he just didn't get off the field. He made sure the cowboys are going to win this game

      No. This was the expanded 82 playoffs in January of 83. The players strike gutted the season and they turned the wild card round into a 16 team (8 in each conference) playoff. The Chargers beat the Steelers that day.

    I honestly think that had the buccs beating the Los Angeles Rams in that 1979 NFC title game they would have given the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers a run for they're money in super bowl 13 in Pasadena CA... The Steelers probably don't win super bowl #4 until later down the line.... Just saying though!!! The 1979 Tampa bay buccaneers defense was very good...

    Doug Williams was treated so poorly by Bucs management. Dude took an expansion team to the playoffs 3 times, can't believe they forced him out. That said, he was an absolutely terrible playoff quarterback UNTIL that fateful Super Bowl against the Broncos. What a time to have one of the best games in NFL history!

    Too much Cowboy defense again for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I don't think Tampa Bay would have done much in the 80s with Doug Williams the Bears were up and coming. Tampa Bay's defense started to go downhill in 1984

    • @Odawg96
      @Odawg96 6 лет назад +1

      Ben Kuxhouse Well, look at it this way...if they had Williams maybe they wouldn't have had to waste picks on guys like Testaverde. Maybe Bo Jackson would've considered playing for them. Perhaps they wouldn't have needed Bo at all. Maybe they would've drafted a stronger defense. The general consensus among players on the team, though, was that when Williams left, the team lost its leader. They really haven't had a consistent one at QB since (even though they've won a Super Bowl).

    • @benkuxhouse787
      @benkuxhouse787 6 лет назад

      Odawg96 Tampa Bay would have been a better team no doubt but I don't think they would have had the Firepower to take on the Chicago Bears. Chicago was putting together a championship defense and Tampa Bay's very good defense was on its way to becoming one of the worst. 1984-85 86 Tampa Bay's defense was one of worst in the NFL

      Odawg96 Doug Williams was a average QB. 1 good Super Bowl. But a very very nice man
      who has suffered his share of life heartbreaks.

    • @Odawg96
      @Odawg96 6 лет назад

      Scott Davidson We don't dispute that his passing numbers were average. However, he possessed those "intangibles" and leadership qualities that can't be captured in a stat book. His Tampa Bay teammates can attest to that...especially since "above-average" QBs arrived in Tampa Bay after him and couldn't produce victories tve way did. Here in the Baltimore-Washington area, though, "average" QBs with superior leadership skills and toughness have helped win 5 or 6 Super Bowls. Two of the greatest every played in these parts (Unitas and Jurgensen), but guys named Morrall, Dilfer, and Flacco helped Baltimore teams to championships in the modern era, and down the road Joe Gibbs won championships with QBs named Theismann, Rypien, and (dramatic pause)...Doug Williams. Honorable mention to average and tough guys like Billy Kilmer and, the one who got away, Stan Humphries. Also to an above average tough guy who was awesome for a short period of time: Bert Jones.

    That was the most one sided two score game you will ever see. In reality the Cowboys should have won by 4-5 touchdowns. 445-218 in yards and 29 first downs to 8. The fluke fumble recovery TD and missed tackle TD pass by Tampa were the only reason the score was remotely competitive.

      I think part of the issue I barely being a sellout as Dallas didn't know who they would be playing until late Monday night the week before. In those days the NFL had a week 16 Monday night game and this year in the strike year it was Minnesota/Dallas. also Tampa wasn't the team to really drive ticket sales. also something I just realized as I w as typing this. Both Minnesota and Dallas who played the previous Monday night and were at home this Sunday got late afternoon(4 PM ET) starts
