Calling Corel, Costa Del Sol, and Gold Saucer meaningless is a crazy take lol. I'm sure a lot of people like me have very fond memories of those sections in the OG and seeing them fleshed out and full is a treat. IF the devs got rid of those parts, I feel like the uproar and backlash would outway any issues you have with them now. Tam can keep saying the story is meaningless nonsense all he wants throughout the game but most people including me found it to be some of the best moments and funnest experiences had in an rpg in years
Short game recommendations: Harvey Brown- I doubt you’ll find my comment, but to anyone searching for great, short games I have a few recommendations. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, What Remains of Edith Finch, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Death’s Door, Fire Watch, Oxenfree, A Plague Tale, Outer Worlds, Hellblade, and Hi-Fi Rush. A little bit of every genre for you, if you’re looking for a great, short-ish game.
Great list! I'd also add Afterparty, Jusant, Journey (of course) and maybe try playing some older games too. There's no harm in revisiting older games that you enjoyed or going back to games that you hadn't gotten round to when they released. I had never played any of the Bioshock games until last year, then there was a deal on the full trilogy for dirt cheap. I played through most of Bioshock 1, a little of 2 but then blasted through infinite in about 7 hours.
As a biased FFVII fan, Rebirth may have been the greatest gaming experience I’ve ever had. I can’t count the amount of times I was like… “how is this game real?”
5 months later but so true man. I’m 30 and never played final fantasy growing up. First final fantasy was 14, then I played 15, remake part 1, and ff16. Rebirth is top 3 game all time for me and maybe even #1. It’s between Skyrim and rebirth for me. Haven’t fell in love with a game like this since Skyrim. It’s a true masterpiece
What Gene said about playing the OG in a language he didn't understand is exactly how I experienced games back then as well... English is not my native language, I became fluent only around 15 years old (gaming helped a lot with that). It was just me and an old English-Portuguese dictionary, and I kept pausing to translate all the time... I had so many questions when I finished FF7. But I loved it. I'm a huge FF7 fan boy, I'm unable to see any fault in it. It's perfect to me
I walk up to the bartender in Kalm to complete a quest. As I turn to leave, I see Aerith & Tifa chatting quietly in the corner while Barrett & Red share some beers tableside. *_Rebirth_* sets a new bar for party-based RPGs and they way they make you feel like you're part of an adventuring party. Theyre *_always_* there in the background, even during combat.
So little praise for such good experiences. 16 set a new bar for action set pieces in games and rebirth sets a new bar for feeling like a true adventure with a group of friends. Instead let’s focus on a couple things we didn’t like instead of looking at the bigger picture.
I love both VII Rebirth and XVI for different reasons, XVI was one of my top games from 2023 and Rebirth is looking to be one of my top games from 2024.

Usually agree with Tam on most gaming things but an 8 is just too low of a score for Rebirth. Hence I think that's why he sounds quite defensive here and on Giant Bomb
I have some problems with the ending, but damn I don't think I disliked it even 1/1000th as much as Tam. I really don't understand him saying characters were "undermined" in a significant way.
It's understandable to compare two big games in the same series but I hope people understand two things: 1. Rebirth had Part 1 to work out their systems and OG as a foundation for ideas, while 16 is a brand new game, story etc. 2. 16 started development in 2016, before 7R came out which is why 16 didn't use elements from 7R and vice versa, also these are 2 different teams and are essentially 2 different studios Regardless Rebirth is impressive as fuck that they managed to create a game at this scale and with consistent quality in the span of 4 years, wild in this climate of games. Hope for the next FF they use this as the foundation.
Rebirth is also "just" a remake. They already had a great story and characters to work with. 16 had to build a new world which was not already loved by millions. It is almost unfair to compare them. But they got the same asking price, so it is what it is.
Agree about continuing in this vein. The 7R combat system is the best thing that could've happened to this franchise. It's as perfect a union of turn-based strategy and action-based quick thinking as the medium is likely to achieve, and I'd love to see it become the default combat system for mainline entries going forward, in the same way that traditional ATB was the norm for FF4-9. The series could benefit from a touch of consistency after 20 years of ups and downs. One of SE's biggest mistakes with FF is trying to reinvent the wheel with every new entry, fiddling about with new engines and new combat systems, when most of the best and most successful series (MonHun, Soulsborne, Persona, etc.) iterate on the systems they already have and make them better, instead of throwing it all out and starting from scratch for every entry. I love that this series dares to experiment, but IMO having a core set of recurring mechanics to fall back on makes that process much less prone to failure or disappointment.
Also to add, the asset pipeline was started a long time ago, probably around the time of remake's greenlight. A lot of assets of rebirth can be seen in crisis core, which is just smart use of resources.
FF16 is heavily inspired on FF14, so it's not really a complete new game. It's just that FF14 system is boring as hell and it happens to even more boring on a single player game.
I think the side stuff boils down to, do you want the world setting expanded (eg. learning about the Junon midgar war)? Do you want the character relationships with cloud expanded (eg. sidequests)? Do you like the combat (eg. fiend events)? My only complaint was that the initial start is tutorial (Nibelhiem), long open world, dungeon, long open world. Which even as an enjoyer of the backstory stuff was a bit much. But past that point it gets paced out. They could have circumvented that by adding a bit more linear content after Nibelhiem before the long open world (perhaps by making the bomb shelter a proper dungeon).

@@ksjxbsbxiebd Nah, I've played most of those. Those are good too, but 7 Rebirths are great aswell. They're funny and have the party talking to each other, making jokes and talking through their problems. It's great and adds a lot of charm. Seeing GTAV did make me laugh, though, can't lie.

I'm currently playing through FF16. It's an odd one. You'll be having an amazing battle with something really big and big in spectacle, with amazing cut scenes then I'm off walking through an empty feeling world doing chores. The combat is great but some of the new power feel pointless I mainly stay with the Phoenix powers. I'm about 45 percent complete. Does it get any better?
Lol no thats with every ff game. You do pointles fetch quests so you can be powerful enough for the next story section. Although i would carry on playing with ff16 since some of the later eikon fights are amazing.
Unfortunately it doesn't, in fact after the 50% percent completion the pacing gets bad and there is a ton of fetch quests, but it picks up shortly after and the action and bosses get even better however you will still encounter some chores here and there.
@@kostasspirou1010 rebirth has similar pacing but saved by the fact that it got minigames instead of just walking and talking to fill those filler segments. Honestly hoping future games they stop it with the pointless fillers.
@@kostasspirou1010literally every side quest in rebirth is a fetch quest too. All side quests are fetch quests. Go here, do that. Both games have some with meaningful battles, or character interactions. And some with none. I don’t get why people hate FF16 side quests lol
I don’t get why there has to be a competition. I’ve enjoyed both of them a lot. They just focus on different things. FF7 is good for the traditional FF style with lots of mini games and party management and exploration. FF16 is good for something different with a focus on being more action oriented, with a lot of technical depth that you can engage with if you want but isn’t required, and boss battles that are arguably the best in FF or in gaming in general.
My one pet peeve is the white-haired kid. Everytime I complete something on the open-world, cloud opens up his tablet and wastes nearly a minute talking to this kid. He is so annoying. I skip all his dialogues lmao

The way he talked about how gold saucer was annoying and what he said about the minigames instantly told me that he doesnt get ff7 at all. So i cant really take his opinion seriously. I havent finished the game yet but people dont seem to understand that they have a 3rd game to sell, you guys want a definitive ending, all the answers and it was obvious from the beginning that we werent going to get them at all.

I don't really agree about Tam's assessment of the story. This section of the story in FF7 is purely about character building. Learning about everyone's histories and all of them coming together. It's the empire Strikes back. It's the character drama chapter. That's why it's rules.
I think it's a testament to how powerful the character building and drama is that people even feel motivated to play 70+ hours of the game like Ralph. If the story wasn't interesting at all that likely wouldn't be happening. Character story can be just as important and in this case it is.
ikr. in party based game JRPG, story section for relationship between party member and world building is important. Unless your main character only travel alone

The OG has this powerful moment where you hear the screams from the people on the plate as it falls, only to cut to the silence of president Shinra staring out the window, opera music playing in his office as horror unfolds outside. In Rebirth there's just this awkward techno music blasting over the whole scene, it loses its potency.
I’m here for the FF7 chat. I’m only at Mnt Coral, enjoying my time, but there is maybe a little too much game here. I find myself just wanting to get to the next story beat, but unable to skip the side quests. I gotta be honest though, this is the one game (I’m counting the Remake trilogy as 1) you really should play the original first before diving in. You will miss out on so much if you’re new to the world of FF7. But to each their own. Edit- I just finished the Rebirth conversation and enjoyed everyone’s take. I’m only half way through the game but so far I’m siding with Ralph and Gene. I think part of it is being such a hard core FF7 nerd this game is a dream come true, for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s as good as my 11 year old self dreamed a modern remake of my favorite game could be.
Yeah the bloat is a bit less egregious than in Remake but it’s still very noticeable sometimes. I‘m not really sure why they do it either because the game would already be plenty long enough (and arguably better) without it.
Great episode, as always. As for the user-questions: #1. At this point, I really don't like that "I don't have time for long games"-argument (which is usually mentioned in combination with "make games shorter" as if your life decisions would be the fault of the games) anymore. My favorite genre are long-a** JRPGs, I have a full-time job and I have not even the possibility to game within breaks or when driving to or from work. Sooo, at the end, it took me slightly more than three months to finish Trails Into Reverie (with the majority of optional stuff). This isn't the way I used to play games, it's not my favorite way to play games, but if you are interested in that stuff you'll find moments to play, even if it's only half an hour or an hour a day. And you can and will still enjoy them. People get this stuff right for every other hobby they might have, but for some weird reason, if it's come to gaming, it's always "the games are too long" not "my time-management sucks". #2. Yeah. Even "fair" shops in full-price-games, especially in titles that doesn't need to have any online-services or "community features" game-content-wise are definitely something which makes me want to play a game less and therefor also makes me want to pay for a game less. I'm not against content that "stretches" a game to some extent, as long as it's optional. There are people who like that stuff, though.
53:00 this point about FF16 being the game they needed to reach a wider audience is definitely a good point…. It was my first Final Fantasy game since PS1 I believe. It was so long ago I didn’t remember anything about it except I played it at some point. So FF16 was basically my first FF game and it completely caught me off guard. I bought it on a whim after the trailers looked amazing and absolutely loved it… straight through the end of the Final Fantasy difficulty NG+. I am now playing and enjoying Rebirth…. After having recently completed FF7 Remake. So basically if I had never played FF16 I likely would’ve have never given Remake and the different ATB/MP combat system a chance and same goes for Rebirth. So I’m extremely grateful for Ff16 being more mainstream because since it was, after playing it I had the motivation to start trying to the other FF games!

Dune 2 felt so rushed. I much prefer the pacing of Part 1. They really rushed far too fast through part 2 though. The ending didn’t feel as impactful because of it.
"I love Balatro, I don't really play poker" seems to sum up the audience of people who love this game. As someone who plays card games a lot, Balatro got boring really fast. Everything being based on poker hands means there's only so much math/variety in your strategy, and if you're familiar with it, it feels "solved" pretty fast. It took me less than 2 hours to win a run the first time. And sure, there's endless mode and different challenges, but the fundamental math stays the same.
Can someone timestamp me to the part they compare to FFXVI? I don't want to watch this til I've finished the game but am interesting in hearing thoughts of comparison to 16

Ralph nailed it. Rebirth brought back all the elements of a classic FF. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone but as a FAN of FF. That's what I've wanted for years now. Easily the best FF since the glory days.
7 Remake/ Rebirth is just a Love letter to the fans. While every game has its weak points this story imo just delivers. So many great scenes. So many character moments. The game knows when to be quiet, when to be funny and when to be dead serious. I played Remake like 10 times since it came out and if part three brings this to a satisfying conclusion, which at the moment I'm confident in, then this trilogy will be in my top 10 games of all time. 16 on the other hand is more complicated. The game has some moments where it really truly shines but after one playthrough, when the spectacle of the new settles a bit and you look at it more closely it falls apart pretty quickly. It is relativly entertaining pretty much until the second time skip where Cid dies. After that the game should really open up and it kinda tries but the world is tiny and there just isn't any interesting stuff to do. And the game knows this. Because it forces you to go on really stupid side quests to get parts for Mids ship which are completely rubbish. It really is a shame. There is a lot of potential wasted here.
Having beaten both XVI and VII Rebirth, if you combine the gameplay, questing and party dynamic of Rebirth with the writing, voice acting and set pieces of XVI, you will get the perfect final fantasy ever. XVI for some it's story flaws actually is completely understandable and good by the end whereas Rebirth by the end is nonsensical 😂
Rebirth has better enjoyable characters and actually has funny lighthearted moments. 16 story is a depressing bore and Rebirth voice acting is just as good
@@shawnzinator XVI humor works for me just as well. Rebirth sometimes was more over the top than funny. Disagree on the voice acting though. XVI is way better because they recorded English first. The voice acting for rebirth falls apart sometimes at the end.
Disagree hard on the gameplay. 16s is just better. FF7's fights are just meh compared to 16s and the ATB system heavily limits any cool combos you can do in that game. I don't particularly care about party dynamics and honestly 15 did it better than 7 and 16 anyway.

Both are great. Rebirth is a lot of fun to play. Unpopular opinion maybe but I enjoyed the world characters and story quite a bit more in 16. There were multiple holy shit moments in that game.
That makes sense in the fact that its a complete plot and not part 1 or 2 of 3 xD, if you take all of the remakes parts in one large game then there no comparsion FF16 falls very flat. The boss fights and cutscenes are amazing though but outside that only clive and cid are decent jill and the others are seriously underdeveloped. The only cool in game moment I can remember is shiva and titan fighting anything

This also brings out one problem with this being a segmented games with FF7 that the plot can feel somewhat disjointed if its been along time playing part 1 to 2 etc, your only looking at one section of a plot and not the whole thing.
Ima huge FF fanboy, so I can generally find things I really love/appreciate about each - and 16’s no different! The absolute gorgeous and incredible spectacle they display with their graphical and theatrical portrayal of the summons and lore of that universe was amazing.. However! I can also recognize some basic things they could have implemented as well. Team play shoulda been a thing. They recognized that in ff15, and eventually added swapping in with ‘the bros’ during the DLC.. and even with ff7 remake, party swapping is quickly becoming near standard gameplay addition, being able to break away from the ‘single player’ expertise by just using Clive, we shoulda have been able to switch to Jill and Cid, even if it just meant using their singular eikon abilities, would have granted access to shiva abilities waaay sooner in the game and it’s a fun way to introduce and pull off team up and timing attacks etc.. Hopefully they can add something like that in the future- but I think they’re pretty much done creating content for the game And rebirth ofc, is living up to all the hype I been hearing so far, so looking forward to continuing that journey
My IMAX screening of Dune 2 paused at the halfway point, then proceeded to play the same scene on a 5 sec loop until they turned off the film. They gave us the option to see a later screening or a full refund. I went as a work activity so we took the refund. I did like what I saw though!
Having played both games, it's not even close. FF7 Rebirth is far and above better than 16 with slight exception that I liked the combat slightly better from 16. But in every other area, FF7RB is the best!
FFXVI the 2nd time thru is honestly amazing. We've been blessed to have two different and amazing games in the last year with Dawntrail right on their heels. Rebirth is probably the best game I have played in the last 5 years outside of Armored Core 6. We are in another golden age of FF. Appreciate it while it lasts.
I'd love a good discussion on the ending because I genuinely LIKE the ending is it perfect no that said I actually find it interesting 🤷♂️ I think people overreact and hate it for xyz reason and it feels silly sometimes

Im only on chapter 6 but i have a feeling about the ending and what they are tiptoeing around. Why else would *he* be on the cover? Why else would they make *him* playable with a completely different moveset? That character dies and *he* takes his place with timey wimey wibbly wobbly Kingdom Hearts logic.
Agreed, there's zero sense to have him on the cover, then have a completely parallel story going with those specific characters, and not pay it off in the third game.
Wish I could get into FF7 but I just couldn't at all. Characters are so cringe and it feels like a game stuck in the past for better or worse. FF16 is my favourite ff and what I want in a game, complex story, mc I like, mature tone, violence and epicness.
I'm actually the opposite of Ralph about Dune, I absolutely loved the 1st movie and felt like it nailed everything to a tee, but then I watched 2 and while I really really liked it, I didn't love it because I felt like the pacing of the 2nd half of the movie just completely threw me off. It starts of solid but then just goes at a breakneck speed, and considering how well the 1st movie was paced just did not work as well for me. Still fucking excellent of course.

I just think terrorist implies inciting terror and ill intent when they were taking action against shinra in the only way they could. the game never calls them terrorist either (they are called eco terrorists although). i’ve only played remake so far though so unless barrett suddenly decides to bomb everything i think my points stands
I feel like I am the only one who loves the FF7 Rebirth ending and think it's actually brilliant. Emotional, smart, and well done. All unexplained mysteries clearly feel like set ups for the third game that will be addressed then (I can clearly pin point that they will be addressed in the equivalent of the life stream sequence from the original game, even). I felt like the pay off WAS there, but I guess it wasn't the pay off people wanted, which is the specific reveals and developments that will happen in the third game. Whether the third game sticks the landing or not still remains to be seen, and I think that ambiguity and lack of Rebirth standing alone as a "complete" story on it's own is the real sticking points of contention here. Even if the plot falters in the third and final game, the experience is still a great one overall because the character work and relationships and growth is consistently great. And ultimately, that is what the story is about and what makes it meaningful.
I mean, there’s not really character growth. Barret has a bit and so does red 13. But that’s kind of it. No one has else has an “arc” and more questions are brought up than answered. There won’t be a satisfying conclusion to the answers, square hasn’t had that ability for a long while. That doesn’t mean it won’t be fun, or good.
@@Kmaitland89 I disagree in a big way. Cloud, Aerith, Tifa all had arcs in addition to Barret and Red 13. Yuffie is kind of along for the ride, I imagine her story will be more relevant in the Wutai section of Part 3. Cait Sith also doesn't have much of an arc, but there is a minor one there with the betrayal and reconciliation, although it wasn't much more than it was in the OG FF7. SPOILERS: Clouds arc is the combo of him regressing with his mental illness/Sephiroph manipulation while seeing him otherwise grow better and be more himself in flashes. It's a struggle between him becoming better and him becoming worse, and it ends on the very uncomfortable note of him being much worse, but thinking he is better than ever. A strong set up for him to be mind broken when he hands over the black materia. Tifa's arc revolves around the ever growing strain on her relationship with Cloud, and her desire to please everyone holding her back from rocking the boat, even in times when that feels necessary. I'll be honest: this is largely laying groundwork for part 3, where she will have a more prominent role. That said, they did add an arc involving her distrust in Cloud being restored partially due to her lifestream experience. Although the events that lead to that experience and others that follow will definitely shake that. Aerith's arc involves her trying to discover what was missing that the whispers took from her. It ended with her finding her own resolve, instead of trying to find what she used to know, she decides to move forward and create her own future based on her own choices instead of relying on what was lost in the past. This is what her whole speech at the end of the Temple of the Ancients was about, after her Trial. More than individual character growth, there was a lot of relationship growth between the characters, as they bonded more and became more closely knit- and also how Cloud's negative progression put a whole lot of strain on that. "There won’t be a satisfying conclusion to the answers" That's very subjective, you may find them not to be satisfying, I may find them very satisfying. Considering how satisfied I am with things right now, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Have to admit, FF16 disappointed me. I almost put it down several times due to boredom. Though I did beat it, so it's at least above FF13. So far enjoying FF7 Rebirth much more. There's a lot to do, but not like it's all required for those who prefer less side content.

Even the parts at the end Tam is alluding to make sense in that context.

I’ve played and enjoyed most of the final fantasy games but for me so much of 16 from the Ui, to traversal and how you interface with the environment, to the stripped down RPG mechanics, to the barren open areas and more made it feel like a high budget mobile game they ported to console.

Harvey Brown- I doubt you’ll find my comment, but to anyone searching for great, short games I have a few recommendations. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, What Remains of Edith Finch, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, Death’s Door, Fire Watch, Oxenfree, A Plague Tale, Outer Worlds, Hellblade, and Hi-Fi Rush. Great list! I'd also add Afterparty, Jusant, Journey (of course) and maybe try playing some older games too. There's no harm in revisiting older games that you enjoyed or going back to games that you hadn't gotten round to when they released. I had never played any of the Bioshock games until last year, then there was a deal on the full trilogy for dirt cheap. I played through most of Bioshock 1, a little of 2 but then blasted through infinite in about 7 hours.

5 months later but so true man. I’m 30 and never played final fantasy growing up. First final fantasy was 14, then I played 15, remake part 1, and ff16. Rebirth is top 3 game all time for me and maybe even #1. It’s between Skyrim and rebirth for me. Haven’t fell in love with a game like this since Skyrim. It’s a true masterpiece

*_Rebirth_* sets a new bar for party-based RPGs and they way they make you feel like you're part of an adventuring party. Theyre *_always_* there in the background, even during combat.
So little praise for such good experiences. 16 set a new bar for action set pieces in games and rebirth sets a new bar for feeling like a true adventure with a group of friends. Instead let’s focus on a couple things we didn’t like instead of looking at the bigger picture.

Usually agree with Tam on most gaming things but an 8 is just too low of a score for Rebirth. Hence I think that's why he sounds quite defensive here and on Giant Bomb
I have some problems with the ending, but damn I don't think I disliked it even 1/1000th as much as Tam. I really don't understand him saying characters were "undermined" in a significant way.
It's understandable to compare two big games in the same series but I hope people understand two things:
1. Rebirth had Part 1 to work out their systems and OG as a foundation for ideas, while 16 is a brand new game, story etc.
2. 16 started development in 2016, before 7R came out which is why 16 didn't use elements from 7R and vice versa, also these are 2 different teams and are essentially 2 different studios
Regardless Rebirth is impressive as fuck that they managed to create a game at this scale and with consistent quality in the span of 4 years, wild in this climate of games.
Hope for the next FF they use this as the foundation.
Rebirth is also "just" a remake. They already had a great story and characters to work with. 16 had to build a new world which was not already loved by millions.
It is almost unfair to compare them. But they got the same asking price, so it is what it is.
Agree about continuing in this vein. The 7R combat system is the best thing that could've happened to this franchise. It's as perfect a union of turn-based strategy and action-based quick thinking as the medium is likely to achieve, and I'd love to see it become the default combat system for mainline entries going forward, in the same way that traditional ATB was the norm for FF4-9. The series could benefit from a touch of consistency after 20 years of ups and downs.
One of SE's biggest mistakes with FF is trying to reinvent the wheel with every new entry, fiddling about with new engines and new combat systems, when most of the best and most successful series (MonHun, Soulsborne, Persona, etc.) iterate on the systems they already have and make them better, instead of throwing it all out and starting from scratch for every entry. I love that this series dares to experiment, but IMO having a core set of recurring mechanics to fall back on makes that process much less prone to failure or disappointment.
Also to add, the asset pipeline was started a long time ago, probably around the time of remake's greenlight. A lot of assets of rebirth can be seen in crisis core, which is just smart use of resources.

FF16 is heavily inspired on FF14, so it's not really a complete new game. It's just that FF14 system is boring as hell and it happens to even more boring on a single player game.

I think the side stuff boils down to, do you want the world setting expanded (eg. learning about the Junon midgar war)? Do you want the character relationships with cloud expanded (eg. sidequests)? Do you like the combat (eg. fiend events)?
My only complaint was that the initial start is tutorial (Nibelhiem), long open world, dungeon, long open world. Which even as an enjoyer of the backstory stuff was a bit much. But past that point it gets paced out. They could have circumvented that by adding a bit more linear content after Nibelhiem before the long open world (perhaps by making the bomb shelter a proper dungeon).
The side quests is one of the best in games. Just the banter between the characters makes it worthwhile.

Nah, I've played most of those. Those are good too, but 7 Rebirths are great aswell. They're funny and have the party talking to each other, making jokes and talking through their problems. It's great and adds a lot of charm. Seeing GTAV did make me laugh, though, can't lie.

I'm currently playing through FF16. It's an odd one. You'll be having an amazing battle with something really big and big in spectacle, with amazing cut scenes then I'm off walking through an empty feeling world doing chores. The combat is great but some of the new power feel pointless I mainly stay with the Phoenix powers. I'm about 45 percent complete. Does it get any better?
Lol no thats with every ff game. You do pointles fetch quests so you can be powerful enough for the next story section. Although i would carry on playing with ff16 since some of the later eikon fights are amazing.
Unfortunately it doesn't, in fact after the 50% percent completion the pacing gets bad and there is a ton of fetch quests, but it picks up shortly after and the action and bosses get even better however you will still encounter some chores here and there.
@@kostasspirou1010 rebirth has similar pacing but saved by the fact that it got minigames instead of just walking and talking to fill those filler segments. Honestly hoping future games they stop it with the pointless fillers.

I don’t get why there has to be a competition. I’ve enjoyed both of them a lot. They just focus on different things.
FF7 is good for the traditional FF style with lots of mini games and party management and exploration.
FF16 is good for something different with a focus on being more action oriented, with a lot of technical depth that you can engage with if you want but isn’t required, and boss battles that are arguably the best in FF or in gaming in general.
I'm not really into the 'new' story they're telling but I'm really enjoying this as a kind FF7 theme park that I'm wandering around.

I don't really agree about Tam's assessment of the story. This section of the story in FF7 is purely about character building. Learning about everyone's histories and all of them coming together. It's the empire Strikes back. It's the character drama chapter. That's why it's rules.

I think it's a testament to how powerful the character building and drama is that people even feel motivated to play 70+ hours of the game like Ralph. If the story wasn't interesting at all that likely wouldn't be happening. Character story can be just as important and in this case it is.

The OG has this powerful moment where you hear the screams from the people on the plate as it falls, only to cut to the silence of president Shinra staring out the window, opera music playing in his office as horror unfolds outside. In Rebirth there's just this awkward techno music blasting over the whole scene, it loses its potency.
I’m here for the FF7 chat. I’m only at Mnt Coral, enjoying my time, but there is maybe a little too much game here. I find myself just wanting to get to the next story beat, but unable to skip the side quests. I gotta be honest though, this is the one game (I’m counting the Remake trilogy as 1) you really should play the original first before diving in. You will miss out on so much if you’re new to the world of FF7. But to each their own.
Edit- I just finished the Rebirth conversation and enjoyed everyone’s take. I’m only half way through the game but so far I’m siding with Ralph and Gene. I think part of it is being such a hard core FF7 nerd this game is a dream come true, for me. It’s not perfect, but it’s as good as my 11 year old self dreamed a modern remake of my favorite game could be.
Yeah the bloat is a bit less egregious than in Remake but it’s still very noticeable sometimes. I‘m not really sure why they do it either because the game would already be plenty long enough (and arguably better) without it.

As for the user-questions:
#1. At this point, I really don't like that "I don't have time for long games"-argument (which is usually mentioned in combination with "make games shorter" as if your life decisions would be the fault of the games) anymore. My favorite genre are long-a** JRPGs, I have a full-time job and I have not even the possibility to game within breaks or when driving to or from work. Sooo, at the end, it took me slightly more than three months to finish Trails Into Reverie (with the majority of optional stuff). This isn't the way I used to play games, it's not my favorite way to play games, but if you are interested in that stuff you'll find moments to play, even if it's only half an hour or an hour a day. And you can and will still enjoy them. People get this stuff right for every other hobby they might have, but for some weird reason, if it's come to gaming, it's always "the games are too long" not "my time-management sucks".
#2. Yeah. Even "fair" shops in full-price-games, especially in titles that doesn't need to have any online-services or "community features" game-content-wise are definitely something which makes me want to play a game less and therefor also makes me want to pay for a game less. I'm not against content that "stretches" a game to some extent, as long as it's optional. There are people who like that stuff, though.

It was my first Final Fantasy game since PS1 I believe. It was so long ago I didn’t remember anything about it except I played it at some point.
So FF16 was basically my first FF game and it completely caught me off guard. I bought it on a whim after the trailers looked amazing and absolutely loved it… straight through the end of the Final Fantasy difficulty NG+.
I am now playing and enjoying Rebirth…. After having recently completed FF7 Remake.
So basically if I had never played FF16 I likely would’ve have never given Remake and the different ATB/MP combat system a chance and same goes for Rebirth.
So I’m extremely grateful for Ff16 being more mainstream because since it was, after playing it I had the motivation to start trying to the other FF games!

Dune 2 felt so rushed. I much prefer the pacing of Part 1. They really rushed far too fast through part 2 though. The ending didn’t feel as impactful because of it.

"I love Balatro, I don't really play poker" seems to sum up the audience of people who love this game. As someone who plays card games a lot, Balatro got boring really fast. Everything being based on poker hands means there's only so much math/variety in your strategy, and if you're familiar with it, it feels "solved" pretty fast. It took me less than 2 hours to win a run the first time. And sure, there's endless mode and different challenges, but the fundamental math stays the same.

7 Remake/ Rebirth is just a Love letter to the fans. While every game has its weak points this story imo just delivers. So many great scenes. So many character moments. The game knows when to be quiet, when to be funny and when to be dead serious. I played Remake like 10 times since it came out and if part three brings this to a satisfying conclusion, which at the moment I'm confident in, then this trilogy will be in my top 10 games of all time.
16 on the other hand is more complicated. The game has some moments where it really truly shines but after one playthrough, when the spectacle of the new settles a bit and you look at it more closely it falls apart pretty quickly. It is relativly entertaining pretty much until the second time skip where Cid dies. After that the game should really open up and it kinda tries but the world is tiny and there just isn't any interesting stuff to do. And the game knows this. Because it forces you to go on really stupid side quests to get parts for Mids ship which are completely rubbish.
It really is a shame. There is a lot of potential wasted here.
The only reason Gene likes the Chadley character is because he mainlines the story. If you 100% every area he is a broken record and drives you nuts.
I loved FF15 and put almost a 100 hours into it. The more I hear from Aussie RALPH the more I think we’re very different gamers.

Having beaten both XVI and VII Rebirth, if you combine the gameplay, questing and party dynamic of Rebirth with the writing, voice acting and set pieces of XVI, you will get the perfect final fantasy ever. XVI for some it's story flaws actually is completely understandable and good by the end whereas Rebirth by the end is nonsensical 😂
For the insane set pieces you gotta wait for Part 3. That's when all the insanity happen, in Disk 2.
Rebirth has better enjoyable characters and actually has funny lighthearted moments. 16 story is a depressing bore and Rebirth voice acting is just as good

Disagree hard on the gameplay. 16s is just better. FF7's fights are just meh compared to 16s and the ATB system heavily limits any cool combos you can do in that game. I don't particularly care about party dynamics and honestly 15 did it better than 7 and 16 anyway.

Both are great. Rebirth is a lot of fun to play. Unpopular opinion maybe but I enjoyed the world characters and story quite a bit more in 16. There were multiple holy shit moments in that game.
That makes sense in the fact that its a complete plot and not part 1 or 2 of 3 xD, if you take all of the remakes parts in one large game then there no comparsion FF16 falls very flat. The boss fights and cutscenes are amazing though but outside that only clive and cid are decent jill and the others are seriously underdeveloped. The only cool in game moment I can remember is shiva and titan fighting anything

Ima huge FF fanboy, so I can generally find things I really love/appreciate about each - and 16’s no different! The absolute gorgeous and incredible spectacle they display with their graphical and theatrical portrayal of the summons and lore of that universe was amazing.. However! I can also recognize some basic things they could have implemented as well.
Team play shoulda been a thing. They recognized that in ff15, and eventually added swapping in with ‘the bros’ during the DLC.. and even with ff7 remake, party swapping is quickly becoming near standard gameplay addition, being able to break away from the ‘single player’ expertise by just using Clive, we shoulda have been able to switch to Jill and Cid, even if it just meant using their singular eikon abilities, would have granted access to shiva abilities waaay sooner in the game and it’s a fun way to introduce and pull off team up and timing attacks etc..
Hopefully they can add something like that in the future- but I think they’re pretty much done creating content for the game
And rebirth ofc, is living up to all the hype I been hearing so far, so looking forward to continuing that journey
They made it for the fans 🙂
I believe square enix took the entire budget for side activities in FFXVI and spent it on FFVII Rebirth. And i'm not even mad about it. 😂

Rebirth wins by miles in every single regard.
On the minigame front, 4-way soccer with asymmetrical teams was something I never knew I wanted.
My IMAX screening of Dune 2 paused at the halfway point, then proceeded to play the same scene on a 5 sec loop until they turned off the film. They gave us the option to see a later screening or a full refund. I went as a work activity so we took the refund. I did like what I saw though!
Having played both games, it's not even close. FF7 Rebirth is far and above better than 16 with slight exception that I liked the combat slightly better from 16.
But in every other area, FF7RB is the best!
FFXVI the 2nd time thru is honestly amazing. We've been blessed to have two different and amazing games in the last year with Dawntrail right on their heels. Rebirth is probably the best game I have played in the last 5 years outside of Armored Core 6. We are in another golden age of FF. Appreciate it while it lasts.

Well i will say this about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth it feels like a giant side quest.
I'd love a good discussion on the ending because I genuinely LIKE the ending is it perfect no that said I actually find it interesting 🤷♂️ I think people overreact and hate it for xyz reason and it feels silly sometimes

Im only on chapter 6 but i have a feeling about the ending and what they are tiptoeing around. Why else would *he* be on the cover? Why else would they make *him* playable with a completely different moveset? That character dies and *he* takes his place with timey wimey wibbly wobbly Kingdom Hearts logic.
Agreed, there's zero sense to have him on the cover, then have a completely parallel story going with those specific characters, and not pay it off in the third game.

Wish I could get into FF7 but I just couldn't at all. Characters are so cringe and it feels like a game stuck in the past for better or worse. FF16 is my favourite ff and what I want in a game, complex story, mc I like, mature tone, violence and epicness.

I'm actually the opposite of Ralph about Dune, I absolutely loved the 1st movie and felt like it nailed everything to a tee, but then I watched 2 and while I really really liked it, I didn't love it because I felt like the pacing of the 2nd half of the movie just completely threw me off. It starts of solid but then just goes at a breakneck speed, and considering how well the 1st movie was paced just did not work as well for me. Still fucking excellent of course.

I feel like I am the only one who loves the FF7 Rebirth ending and think it's actually brilliant. Emotional, smart, and well done. All unexplained mysteries clearly feel like set ups for the third game that will be addressed then (I can clearly pin point that they will be addressed in the equivalent of the life stream sequence from the original game, even). I felt like the pay off WAS there, but I guess it wasn't the pay off people wanted, which is the specific reveals and developments that will happen in the third game. Whether the third game sticks the landing or not still remains to be seen, and I think that ambiguity and lack of Rebirth standing alone as a "complete" story on it's own is the real sticking points of contention here. Even if the plot falters in the third and final game, the experience is still a great one overall because the character work and relationships and growth is consistently great. And ultimately, that is what the story is about and what makes it meaningful.

Barret has a bit and so does red 13. But that’s kind of it. No one has else has an “arc” and more questions are brought up than answered.
There won’t be a satisfying conclusion to the answers, square hasn’t had that ability for a long while.
That doesn’t mean it won’t be fun, or good.

I disagree in a big way. Cloud, Aerith, Tifa all had arcs in addition to Barret and Red 13. Yuffie is kind of along for the ride, I imagine her story will be more relevant in the Wutai section of Part 3. Cait Sith also doesn't have much of an arc, but there is a minor one there with the betrayal and reconciliation, although it wasn't much more than it was in the OG FF7.
SPOILERS:
Clouds arc is the combo of him regressing with his mental illness/Sephiroph manipulation while seeing him otherwise grow better and be more himself in flashes. It's a struggle between him becoming better and him becoming worse, and it ends on the very uncomfortable note of him being much worse, but thinking he is better than ever. A strong set up for him to be mind broken when he hands over the black materia.
Tifa's arc revolves around the ever growing strain on her relationship with Cloud, and her desire to please everyone holding her back from rocking the boat, even in times when that feels necessary. I'll be honest: this is largely laying groundwork for part 3, where she will have a more prominent role. That said, they did add an arc involving her distrust in Cloud being restored partially due to her lifestream experience. Although the events that lead to that experience and others that follow will definitely shake that.
Aerith's arc involves her trying to discover what was missing that the whispers took from her. It ended with her finding her own resolve, instead of trying to find what she used to know, she decides to move forward and create her own future based on her own choices instead of relying on what was lost in the past. This is what her whole speech at the end of the Temple of the Ancients was about, after her Trial.
More than individual character growth, there was a lot of relationship growth between the characters, as they bonded more and became more closely knit- and also how Cloud's negative progression put a whole lot of strain on that.

That's very subjective, you may find them not to be satisfying, I may find them very satisfying. Considering how satisfied I am with things right now, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Have to admit, FF16 disappointed me. I almost put it down several times due to boredom. Though I did beat it, so it's at least above FF13. So far enjoying FF7 Rebirth much more. There's a lot to do, but not like it's all required for those who prefer less side content.

Idk, that stuff all seems entirely in line with the original VII. I keep seeing this take but like… Aerith was always the annoying overly-eager girl with a crush in the original. Did people forget that? Even the parts at the end Tam is alluding to make sense in that context.

I’ve played and enjoyed most of the final fantasy games but for me so much of 16 from the Ui, to traversal and how you interface with the environment, to the stripped down RPG mechanics, to the barren open areas and more made it feel like a high budget mobile game they ported to console.
