3 key responsibilities for wingers in the DZone

  • 1. Be aware of the other teams D. If they get the puck, you need to be in the shot lane. If you force the d to dump the puck in the corner you did your job. If they get a shot on net, you did not do your job well
    2. Support your own d. When your team gets the puck, it is important you are a quick and easy option for the d to pass to. Generally, you will be on or around the wall, with your stick on the ice ready to re I’ve a pass and make a play
    3. Rims. Often times your team will be under pressure in the d zone, resulting in rimmed pucks on the wall. As a winger, you need to be able to stop and control these pucks, and get them out of the zone with a pass or a chip.

Yet, as a defenseman, I tell the wingers that, when we're in our zone, you need to guard the point man. You don't have to be right on him, just between him and the puck. You are in a position to break out if we get the puck, it's your time to rest a little (if we only have 2 lines), and you get the puck if we get in trouble and have to shoot it around the boards, not their point man. But no, they always abandon the guy and chase the puck around. You can tell them a million times, I swear.

my first time playing an actual hockey game in 8 years and i was lost playing as a left winger just curious as a winger so we don’t have to help out the defence at all really in our end? we just have to watch the right d man until we get the puck and break out? bc im so lost i used to know but lost all memory used to be decent now im complete ass😂🤦🏽‍♂️

@@bigpurrr2590correct. Don’t drop too low. Guard the point from blue down to the hash marks/ top half of the circle on your wing.

I see a ton of wingers do this when they think they’re getting in the shot lane they get in front of the dman and not his his stick still allowing shots to get off and get through they need to get in front of his stick and not just the dman
