I’m here looking for validation because I’m in the same boat lol. The other day I just decided to make the switch from being a hard mode gamer straight to an easy mode gamer. Was playing an RPG that I had been on a hiatus from and got absolutely stomped by the boss I had stopped at, then checked my settings and realized I had everything set to the most difficult options (low damage output, high damage received, no retries, etc.), so I changed everything to easy. I realized that all I would have done is go and grind until it became easier anyway, so why waste the time?

Like others have weighed in, when I was younger and really wanted to master a game, playing on a harder difficulty was a project that was rewarding to tackle and took time. Now, it's a hassle more than anything, and as an older person, the time it takes to devote to clawing through one game on hard with limited time keeps me from enjoying all the other stuff out there. And for a purely single player experience, I can't imagine why anyone would give a damn about playing on easy. And, like you said, people with physical disabilities count as well. The more people playing games, the better.

I used to play games on normal mode because I felt like it was the "standard" difficulty that the devs made, however, when I reached adulthood and need to do some adult stuff, I switched to easy mode. Normal Difficulty is not really normal across the board, some games have their normal mode play like a hard mode in others. You also got people like me who are quite messy when it comes to mind-body coordination and because of that, Elden Ring and Dark Souls is a no-go for me. I really enjoyed playing the Star Wars Jedi games even if playing on Story Mode, it made me feel like a powerful Jedi, plus it is convenient. I did try it on the higher difficulties but having to respawn repeatedly while doing the same platforming stuff again and again can be tiring.

I started playing God of War a year ago on moderate, and that game was kicking my ass! I dreaded firing it up to the point where a year later I probably had only done five hours of the game. By contrast, I finished The Last of Us and The Last of Us II twice each, once on moderate and once on hard. But God of War is just a different animal! So out of frustration, I bumped it down to easy mode to get through one of the bosses. And holy hell! I have not been able to put the controller down since. I love the game so much more and I’m able to just enjoy the story and the lore without dying 800 times. Playing on easy creates a path to sometimes just enjoy the story and I can go to other games to give me a “challenge.” But I’m also starting to feel like I don’t need to be challenged anymore. Video games are supposed to be fun, not stressful. And thankfully, I don’t have any toxic gamers in my life arguing otherwise. I'm glad someone finally points out this problem in the gaming community. I perfectly understand why games for example by From Software are always so difficult and how it actually done in order to reflect the bleakness and the unforgiveness of the worlds they created, but I don't understand how some people can feel superior and tell other people to "get gud" simply because they beat the game.
Most of us aren't lucky to have jobs that we enjoy. Some people come home completely exhausted. After coming back from work from a gruelling shift under the management of a boss that acts like a douche, you might not want to play a game where you struggle and get killed 40 times in a row in order to win. Maybe you want to beat, smash, steamroll, crush, rip'n'tear your enemies in the game in order to unwind. Or, on the opposite, you just want to enjoy, the dialogues, the story, the scenery...
As much as I can enjoy a sense of "pride and accomplishment" (lmao) after an intense boss battle, it's also nice just to explore or fuck around, to actually take the time to appreciate what you have on your screen.

In addition, don't let the cesspool of the internet determine what games should/shouldn't enjoy and play and how you should enjoy them. And after playing a certain game that did have difficulty settings (which I think most games should have) that recommended me to play on normal only to get my butt handed to me the whole way (couldn’t change difficulty afterwards), I made it a regular safety precaution to start on easy, only making exceptions if the game said I could change difficulty throughout the game.

But if you're in the camp where let's say a Dark Souls or Bloodborne or Elden Ring need an easy mode, well you're in the wrong camp. Those games were designed to challenge the players in mind. For the record, I have no problem with you wanting to play games on Easy mode. But that doesn't mean the Devs aren't going to have a problem with it. In fact some devs intentionally go out of their way to insult you for playing on Easy. You want an example? Look at what the Easy mode in the PS1 version of Doom is called. It literally calls you a Wimp. So unless you want to feel like you're lesser and never good enough, might want to up the difficulty just a little bit. I'm just saying and making a point.

To be honest, if you give me a difficulty setting, i am just going to play on easy mode. I don't have time to waste on dying over and over again. I work a lot. If there is no difficulty setting, then i will just enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played like the souls games, even though they are difficult, at least there is no difficulty setting so i am playing it in the same setting as eveyrbody else, so if i beat it, its feels good.

A non-penalizing easy mode should be accepted as something that's allowed to exist as much as a game not including it.
It's fine if your game has or has not an easy mode. What matters more is if the game is good or not.
Touhou itself actually doesn't punish people who prefer easy modes. In fact, it mocks hard mode players instead.

I just got a game and want to play it for fun, and there's an option specifically for that, why should I not choose it. Though I find it funny how when I played Bug Fables (Very great game, I recommend playing it) I activated Hard Mode the second I got it, even though this was my first time ever I played it, and the furthest I ever got in a Paper Mario game was in 64 somewhere like end of Prologue or like Chapter 1 or something.

I play games for fun, not as a job, there is no reason to infuriate myself with Hard mode and so on. I agree for the most part, if a game offers difficulty options than people should use them as they wish without being shamed. But demanding games that were not intended to have difficulty modes be changed to suit you is not okay. Miyazaki said this in relation to Elden Ring and the requests for a easy mode "We are always looking to improve, but, in our games specifically, hardship is what gives meaning to the experience. So it’s not something we’re willing to abandon at the moment. It’s our identity".
The developers clearly have reason and desire for the difficulty to be what it is and should not face pressure to change it. Not every game is for every person.
I also think of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. where the publisher demanded the developers put in difficulty options, so they just reduced bullet damage on the easier difficulties. ALL bullet damage, player's included, which turned the game into a nightmare to play on anything but the intended hardest difficulty.

I only ever fully beat one Souls game, Demon's Souls. That was sort of enough for me. It was rewarding to finally reach those end credits, but also very draining. So when I booted up Dark Souls I thought I was ready for more but no... All I felt was something like 'oh no, not this again' and it's been like that ever since. Now I favor easy mode in games, but having beaten at least one Souls game I can say I fully understand that design philosophy; the difficulty in souls is a curated experience that's meant to be hard, but fair, and in the end immensely rewarding in a way no easy game is. Designing a game that way is their artistic freedom put to well use. I would never demand an easy mode added in, I'd rather play something else.
Then some put forward the argument that 'if I buy the game I should have the right to experience the whole game.' To me that sounds like 'I bought this book on quantum physics, so therefor I should be able to understand it'.

    • @theresnothinghere1745
      @theresnothinghere1745 Год назад

@@darkhiker3150 That comes with a large set of issues because difficulty is much more integral to game design than being a flavour choice.
Consider a boss is designed around it having a 1 hit kill move, with the point being that players have to always watch out for that move in particular.
If the damage reducition makes it no longer one hit kill the boss can completely fall apart as the players can act much more freely and ignore the bosses design.
This is also true even for other non-one hit kill attacks.
Enemies are often designed with different moves carrying different levels of danger to the player, a strong move is scary because it can kill you if caught off guard.
Universally nerfing enemy damage blurs the distinction as moves that should be scary become tankable with the worst case scenario often being that players can just ignore the attack altogether.

So, the thing that happened is this. Demon's Souls when it released wound up overlooked. I know I overlooked it, when really I wish I had checked it out now that I have, as well as due to my experience with From Soft's Soulsborne series. Dark Souls, and the phenomena it started, was a breath of fresh terrifying air during a time when Difficulty Settings were EVERYWHERE. When games could just be breezed through because you could choose to make it easy. Not a horrid thing, sure. However, the Soulsborne series gave everyone something that they either knew they'd wanted, or hadn't realized they'd wanted it till they tried it. Games that made you work for victory. Something that the standard gaming experience of the late 2000's had been lacking. I like having the option of adjusting difficulty, for sure. However, Games like that NEED New Game+ functions and bonus content for those second runs, wherein one would up the difficulty to challenge if they've gotten better. It increases replay value. Overall, it's important to have both kinds of games.

I agree with you except with one problem: Trends. We know the video game industry is just as guilty of that as any form of media. The problem is, the Souls genre suddenly became the new trend and games that didn't need to follow that formula suddenly shoehorned it in there. In the 2000s, maybe the games were easier, but it was because they placed an emphasis on action and frenetic gameplay. Now many games have copied the Souls formula which has bottlenecked the accessibility of some gamers who would otherwise be interested, but are turned off by immediate difficult gameplay. For instance, I love the Devil May Cry series. It is my favorite game series. However, very few games resemble that anymore. The only company that took a risk for a game like that was, go figure, Capcom with DMC5.

    • @renegadesofanarchy289

@@midwestyleAgreed, however, there is a trend towards more accessibility even with hard games. For example, the remake of Crash Bandicoot lets you save after every level unlike the original, yet it’s just as difficult as it’s ps1 counterpart but less stressful and more forgiving. Similarly Crash 4 has the option of removing lives altogether yet it’s considered the hardest in the series to date.
And that’s not even considering stuff like colourblind mode, minigame skips in Ratchet etc.
Honestly one of the biggest things that puts me off the souls games is that fact that you can’t fucking pause most of them!

Playing on Easy mode is fine. What I find ruining gaming experience? is if that's the only experience we get. Difficulty should be optional. Skill expression through mastering the game or job or class should also be optional, not mandatory to clear content and available to allow players to feel fulfillment in mastering it if they so choose. If everything becomes easier, and duller, blander and is promoted to be the standard and " ONLY OPTION " ? that's when I find it stressful because I can't get my enjoyment out of it. I see this very much in Job designs in MMO's for example

People can play whatever mode they want and mod the game however they want.
My issue is that people often don't appreciate how integral difficulty (wether easy or hard) is to a game's design. It's rarely a thing that can just be swapped at will.
Hard and easy difficulty create a specific expercience, a specific tone, and fosters specific player behaviour.
One example you show in this video that I think highlights this very well is ghost of tsushima.
I fully believe Ghost of Tsushima would have been better if it forced people to play on lethal.
The reason why isn't even anything to do with mastering mechanics or having a challenge.
Its because the increased ease of death on the player has a major effect on the player's priority.
Playing on lethal makes it really hard to fight 'honorably' and defeat all your enemies, in fact it becomes harder and harder the further you go into the game. This ends up giving the ghost tools a mechincal purpose that is otherwise absent by making it an easy means to safely kill enemies (smoke bombs in particular let you kill large crowds easily).
The result of this is two-fold, first ghost tools now serve an active gameplay function instead of being another means of killing by consitently and reliably helping in fights where pure swords skills will struggle.
Secondly the push to rely on ghost tools puts the player to experience the same emotional journey as Jin where the desire to fight honorably is challenged in gameplay encourageing the player to go down the same path as Jin and accept the use of ghost tools.
Resulting in the mechanics of the game working alongside the narrative not opposed to it as my friend experiened when he was easily able to play 'honorably' during his playthrough before lethal had come out, only for the game to then act as if he had been using ghost tools all along.

Something the SoulsBorne crowd needs to hear, and take off the gatekeeping caps for once
Nevermind that you have games like Another Crabs Treasure, a well liked Souls-like game with a Easy Mode, why the fuck is it anyones business how someone else enjoys a video game on their own time? I swear, theres something about Dark Souls that makes people turn their brains off from rational discussions, and just replaces the actual conversation with screaming monkeys
"Youd have to disable multiplayer" Two things; 1, This assumes that games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring are literally incompleteable unless you engage in the multiplayer (which us a flatout lie), and 2, you are arguing from a hypothetical that assumes people who would play on easy would also be hyper-competitive with their play, which is extremely rare at best
"Youd have to make 2 different games" In short, no. In an era where difficulty is just how much damage is done and recieved is tweaked. The idea that the whole game would need to be retooled is in bad-faith, and coming from a position that thise who play on easy mode would do something stupid like disregard game mechanics, which is simply not true. No easy mode, that I can think of, just lets you go braindead through the game as if the mechanics don't matter, and arguing that people will or would do something like that, assuming its somehow possible in the first place, is nothing but disingenuous strawmanning because they know they don't have a point (Gee, I wonder what big scale RUclipsr argued with such fucked logic like that, HMMMMMMMMM......)
"But Miyazaki-" Listen, he is not perfect, and neither are his visions. They are open to criticism the same way games like TLOU2 was. A devs vision does not magically exclude or write off any criticism, and you lot need to grow the fuck up and stop trying to idolize him and his work as if theyre the second coming of Christ in a dying world
In short, SoulsBorne guys, y'all need to simmer down. The vehemently easy mode defenders aren't much better, but the second you lot man up and actually try to listen and argue in good faith and stop relying on these dog shit arguments and logic, will be one step closer to at least both sides respecting each other

2: some games are not about story, no one wuld give a fuck about elden rings story, if it wasn’t for the dificulty and gameplay, as it’s honestly not that great.
3: you know what’s more frustrating then not progressing in your favourite game??? Loving a game and thinking about all the cool things you culd do, only to never do any becours they be soo op, they break the game and make it unfun to win( see comet beam in eldenring) when you actually DO wont to interact with the systems, but there’s nothing there to test you if you do

To miss out on the story because you can't play the game? There are many people playing the game from start to finish online.
Using tears of the Kingdom as an example is weird considering there is no difficulty option everyone plays it at the same difficulty level is whether or not you actually focus on building to make things easier.
Game producers don't care if you make it to the end of the game or not they care if they make a profit, game developers on the other hand they want you to reach the end but they also have a certain vision for how that ending is achieved, if you don't want any adversity in a game that's meant to show adversity then why not just watch a movie. Gaming is for everyone but not every game is meant for everyone. Just like movies and music is for everyone... But certain genres of movies and music isn't for everyone. You can still enjoy the medium without needing to try to cater to everyone for every title. There is a saying: "A sure formula for failure is to try and please everyone".
Now that I said all that, if it's a 100% single player experience, where there's no multiplayer facets at all then I will not mind a multi difficulty slider, or some ways to customize the controls I'm all for it. I'm only against Sekiro having an easy mode, because at this point in time from software has a reputation and expectations for their games especially if on their title card for said games imply that you are going to die more than once. If it's going to have an easy mode you might as well not die at all.

Why spend 60 dollars and up every new release to quickly select easy mode. When I grab a game if it has an ultra hard difficulty I’ll select hard then come back for ultra hard. Bc the hard difficulty geared me for the next step. All in all the games not really difficult it’s your confidence and performance
