seeing you play drums with this thing is just breaking my brain haha I love it
It's so absolutely absurd haha ❤️
@@RedMeansRecording we need a whole EP with drums played on this, brass and synths played on drumpads and guitars played on a Playstation controller :D
Laughing at every "fingering" and "tonguing" has serious band kid energy and I'm here for it.
Now play air for g string XD
You should start joining bands around town as a drummer and just show up with this thing lol
Came for the embouchure, stayed for the fingering lesson.
I bought a relatively inexpensive ocarina a couple of years ago prior to the holidays and was playing Xmas songs in a very short period of time. You are right that carols are great way to get some quick and fun satisfaction with playing. I started out as a saxophone player and played from grade 2 through grade 12. My kids wondered how I picked it up so quickly. There are just a couple of minor differences between it and sax fingering. A friend from high school band picked up her French horn a few years ago and started playing in her town's community band. She says it is a lot of fun and rewarding. I keep seeing pictures from concerts. I picked up guitar second, mandolin third, and piano fourth. To answer your question about guitar players, yes that is how I feel. I have a Godin synth-axis guitar and an old Roland pitch-to-midi converter. Roland stopped making just the converter; now you have to buy a guitar synth to get one.
Thank you for sharing a hopeful and open message, among the doots! As a novice, being reminded of the meditative goodness that can come along with practice and time really helped.
I really enjoyed this. Your joy for music really comes across in this one.
That roland scat patch is one of my all time favourites. Best for playing dramatic songs.
The Roland scat patch takes me back to working in a music tech retail store. Constantly would play that patch to lighten up a boring day
Hmmm...as a former sax player who never learnt to play keys and now mostly plays synths, this would actually be a really great way to get some expressive playing into my music...and i could just pick sax fingering and hopefully that muscle memory is still there. Thanks, Jeremy - enjoyed this!
jeremy its designed for saxophone, with all the alternate fingerings for sax, just learn those, I know its hard if youre not familiar with sax but worth it. Love what you do, youre a good man, good luck for next year, look for ward to seeing what you create as always.
I guess one nice thing about an ewi is that your pets aren’t afraid of it. My cats run away whenever I pick up my saxophones. They are not fans of the metal geese.
I died when you played We are Number One with no warning, am currently speaking to you from the afterlife. I’ve got like 3 bars of 4G, weirdly.
Bless u
Rofl watching you tell your dog "no" while unboubtedly rewarding their behavior repeatedly at the same time was kind of hilarious
No joke. I sincerely like the new age flute soloing over basic Red Means ambi pads
I got an Aerophone Mini a few weeks ago hoping to work myself up to being worthy one of the bigger models.
This video was great for me for motivation to get started practising! I really enjoyed your tips and watch your learning video as a complete beginner, thanks!
I appreciate this kind of video so much. Someone who makes music I enjoy, who knows theory fine, but doesn't know what they're doing with a specific tool, showing the learning curve and hiccups and overall process of learning. We don't see that a lot on gear-tube, but it helps bridge the gap when we do see it.
This is a very fine, inspirational video. I had bought an AE20 (which has the same sound engine) 6 months ago. I loved the idea of practicing something sax like with a headset in the evening when the kids are sleeping.
I admit I don’t practice enough, often feeling too drained,,but it is such a joy.
A few feedbacks:
- the bluetooth connection is useful, it offers midi bluetooth (which has no lag unlike audio) and I recommend to use the roland practice app on phone. It tracks you playing simple songs and scales practicing and it gives a score. It also can just show the notes you are fingering.
- i usually use mine on alto sax and some flutes. However, try the cello, it sounds remarkably natural when olaying aerophone!
- you can make the sax sound even more realistic using a Swam library in iphone, ipad or computer. Now i usually don’t bother; I just play the built in sound. But if i ever good enough to record a tune in my daw then I would use it!
- You can use it as a midi controller with aftertouch for hardware and software synths. I must say that my experiments with softsynths were so far not that encouraging, hence I returned to mainly the built in sax sounds. But I will revisit.
- linked to my previous comment - it has the zencore sound engine as roland’s flagship synths, hence you can download or design pretty complex sounds with it.
- I especially like this video as encouragement to try to play it every day. Sometimes i play every day for a week. Then i skip for another week, which is not good. Again thanks for this encouragement .
Simple but a great reminder of learning processes. Great video.
This was a nice video, I'm glad you had a good time learning this and I hope you are able to get one and continue :)
I have played digital wind instruments for 3 months and I like it very much. It's difficult in the beginning but I enjoy it when I am familiar with it.
Wow, thanks for the 8note mention in the middle there. Found a number of pieces that are just slightly above my playing level, to challenge myself with!
bagpipes + EDM has to be one of my favorite niches (Orbital - Bagpipe Style from the 90s, still a banger), and if anyone can pull it off it's gotta be you, right?
Wisp - Beadumægen - excellent example :)
I appreciate you sharing this experience. As a middle school through college trumpet player, I respect the time and patience it takes to learn an instrument. 10/10 sir!
Learning a new craft is always such a treat
thank you for sharing once more :)
great video, and your thoughts on learning resonate
fingering lol
I believe the AE30's bluetooth capability include BLE MIDI, e.g., to send midi to synth and/or DAW without using cables. Also supports Bluetooth audio, which can't be used to send audio output to speakers, but can be used to, e.g., play bluetooth audio back track from iPhone to AE30, so it blends with sounds of AE30, especially useful if you're using headphones.
Playing the sax on this thing is really tempting. Thanks for the demo. And yes, taking times for yourself can be hard but very rewarding.
Totally agree with you about the joys of playing an instrument. I've played clarinet since I was in the fourth grade, and while I never had the desire to do it professionally, I'm beyond grateful that my college has a campus/community band that let me just keep playing for fun while I was in school and after I graduated. When it wasn't able to happen during the pandemic, it definitely felt like a part of me was missing
I just got a Roland AE 20. Caused me to take saxophone lessons. Learning the fingering is important. I’m using it with the SWAM Sax Pro and laying down lines in Korg Gadget. It’s fun.
I have one of these. I bought it specifically to control my modular synth with. You should totally hook it up to yours! You can make great sounds with that kind of dynamic control!
I use the Shuttle Control module to turn the signals from the Aerophone into control voltage. The module neatly separates it into different patch points.
Go play!
what a natural instrument for tympani
I also played the flute in my youth and for many years I've wanted a way to play a wind instrument digitally. The Aerophone looks like fun! But I can't afford a commercially manufactured EWI, so I decided to build my own. It's limited in features, sure, but it lets me play a wind instrument with VCV Rack!
The trick is to get over the first bump of learning an instrument. Where everything is failure and doesn't sound like music.
Most stop there without ever experiencing the joy of what comes next.
Love my AE-30 👍. The Behringer Neutron has a great MIDI to CV converter for modular (send Breath as Aftertouch and use the Assign output).
"Currently unavailable" on amazon lmao. You created an aerophone bubble Jeremy :P
Thanks, Prof! Another solid branch on the channel tree! Ive been mulling over a windy midi tool ever since a pair of penny whistle hit my table. Your video is perfect! Now i need the exact same insights and investigation into the NuRad instrument. But lets trick some other channel into doing that, eh? Together we can blow the wind back into our sails ⛵️ ❤
Woah I'd like to see you get your hands on one just to see where you could push its limits !
Nice one !
That Roland "Scat" patch is so funny and good at the same time.
when i finally put together my retro backing band to go on tour i'm making someone use this for the drums, no question.
I love this.
I have been so curious about e-windstruments for a long time, but have no background wind instruments at all. Very intimidating, this is very helpful to see how practicing worked out for you! I'd be curious to see a reaction video for you trying out the reighning champ of the form, the EWI.
I would love if you did a video using it as a controller for synths just using the breath etc for 3 midi CCs and notes
Sounds pretty rad honestly. The first thing I'd learn would be the sax riff from 808 State's Pacific 707 tho.
Frickin love it, Jeremy. Keep on fingerin' with Roland!
"A fair shake" I see what you did there 😂Thanks for the overview and for sharing your thoughts!
She give me her paw :)
Nice Improvisations
I feel like I briefly heard Peter and the Wolf.
Awesome video- and yeah, when you spend a lot of time sequencing, or in daws, or with keys, or with pads, or whatever else, it can be really refreshing and inspiring to come back to something that feels playable in a way that is more familiar to you. I'm a bit envious that you have an option like that, to be honest - not much for the world of "upright bass midi controllers"
funny, just rented the Aerophone Go from local shop a week ago, and have dabbled with it, as I thought it would make an interesting midi controller to play live with, had sort of nixxed any notion of being abe to play it properly as a standalone, but maybe if I practice it will become less mangled.
I love how much it sounds like the infamous “Saxaboom” Jack Black “plays” 😂 fun video! Neat instrument.
How great it must feel to have breathing be a part of the process again.
(X-Files killed me.)
I purchased an Aerophone Mini around 2 years ago and also ended up setting it to recorder fingering. I still can't play it even if my life depended on it, but my best found use for it is when you use it as a midi instrument. Being able to build a synth patch and then play it using breath control is really next level and super fun.
Oh shit, do I ~want~ NEED one of these? I only slightly miss playing saxophone and clarinet… 😅
Более тонкий и глубокий контроль samples. Крутая вещь!
I can't get enough of the fucking Roland scat singing sound oh my god
We want the theme from Secret of Monkey Island!
This popped up just as I’ve been negotiating with someone for a second hand Akai EWI. Global pandemic for EWI mind worms.
12:40 new Lone EP
11 minutes in and gutted that there hasn’t been a holophonor joke 😋
E- wind Instruments are a trip
Every time I hear Steve Roach and Kevin Braheny - The Other Side I both want to learn to play an EWI, and also kind of think there might not be a point. 🙂
Now do Takarajima from T-square 😎👌
at 1:03 your time is 420... Nice
Filmed at 4:20 nice
Killed me with those sour notes 😂😂
Been dreaming of grabbing a electronic wind instrument for years. Maybe 2024 is the year.
Love
I grew up playing the saxaphone, and sold it to a friend a few years before getting into electronic music after holding onto it for decades, and have regretted it ever sense. I don't want to spend money on buying another right now, but miss it. Is this thing really worth the money? I've considered it but just didn't know how I felt about it.
There's a cheaper version with I think less sounds?
Yo, that X-Files quote got me wanting to listen to Pure Moods.
Loos like a lot of fun, but I know.... practice is very much needed to even get a good tone out of it. I'll stick to knobs and buttons :D
I just stumbled onto this today just as I was looking into the Aerophone Go. As someone starting out with woodwind-esque instruments, would there be any reason to go with this over the Aerophone Go beyond the obvious increased number of instruments onboard?
Thinking long term if I click with it I can use it as a MIDI controller for my own music, and if I decide I want to upgrade I can. Thoughts?
Unfortunately I don't know the differences between the go and pro enough to help :(
@@RedMeansRecording eh it's all cool. I ended up doing more reading and decided to strike the middle ground with the AE-20. Figure it's still substantially less than the Pro but offering a lot of the features. Now just got to see if I can actually learn it. :D
Do you really have a sweater that spells RMR in sign language? Maybe you adressed it in another video, but that's really dope!
you're wholesome. love you.
Still waiting on a midi trombone!
Very cool, used to be a flute player. But, I suspect I’d suck at this 😂 Definitely want one. Will resist !
Wait you used to play flute too????
@@RedMeansRecording yup! I was never that good at it though
Had to give you the old up-thumb (hehehe) for the X-Files theme ;p
Fantastic. Gotta admit tho, watching you play the controller and hearing a string section come out is very disorienting haha! But it is a very original way to interface with producing sounds more organically.
The drums are even weirder
@@RedMeansRecordingindeed, but it is impressive that you can keep up the triggers for a passable beat with your staccato tonguing! Would love to hear you improve some flute over a modular track, I think that would make a great vibe in a chillout groove.
11:20 Was that the X-Files jingle?
The Aerophone has mad Pizza Tower stage selection vibes
You got to play that song from the Titanic 😂
Collab with three stacks when
Where is the desk from?
Rta producer station
Was that the Rugrats theme?
:)
Are you still playing the aerophone? I find mine such a cool instrument to learn!
It was a loaner and I'm trying to get Roland to help me out getting one and it's like pulling teeth
@@RedMeansRecording coverage by a popular synth tuber like you could really push the instrument out of its niche!
Wonder if it makes you want to pick up that 'ol flute again?
Hell no. I sold it years ago and the aerophone gives me exactly what I liked about it without the baggage.
@@RedMeansRecording ohh dear… well I’ve got a piccolo if you need a throwback without the baggage 😂😂
❤❤❤❤

Can I like this more than twice?... Perhaps I'm overly sensitive at the moment but I really appreciate your comment re time, sometime YT personalities seem to live a life so far removed from my own that its easy to become numb to the dazzling performances they are capable of that I often feel I will likely never be able to achieve. Thanks Jeremy.
Time is always the most precious commodity
1:36 I had to do the same with my ex-wife's new husband.
"Riding a windy bike." I see you have met my ex.
