Brilliant, Nick, thanks. I started going to The Pod in the late 1960s. My cousin Chirs Leaney had ED 8 Hellcat, my dad use to push start him down the fire up road in our Humber Super Snipe. The good old days indeed.
Wow fantastic to see these cars i was there also when garlits came over it was heaving with people , i was 10 but remember it well ,it was actually put out on radio 1 at the time not to try to get in as too busy 👍
Probably on radio 1because DLT used to drive for the Stones team remember T Rat good times I was up there every big meet saw Don Garlitts,Shirly muldowny,Roz Prior and alot of the big Swedish teams used to come over good times.I will never forget the first time I saw 2 top fuel dragsters go up the strip it was a fantastic experience then it was a mad rush with everyone rushing to their cars to try and beat the jams trying to get out,o and I remember a mini van called stripteaser which if I remember correctly had a 6 cylinder jag engine in the back and was extremely quick, many a happy time spent up there
Another great video, I can remember watching the first 200mph 1/4 mile run at Santa Pod, I think the dragster was called Commutor, must have been early 70's.
I was there when 'Big Daddy' was there. That was great. I was also there when the first 6-second run was made. Sadly, also there when 'Transcontinental' crashed and when both Alan Ritmeister and Alan Herridge had their fatal acidents.
Did you ever manage to capture Owen Haywood when he rolled the Houndog Funny Car? Not sure of the year but me and a friend ran onto the strip and grabbed a souvenir piece of bodywork each before the marshalls caught us!
Yeah my girl friend and I were friends of Phil and Thelma Elson in the 80s myself knowing Phil in the early 70s when he drove the sneaky T altered then after that the funny car sneaky glow worm brilliant days.

@@NickPettitt great history Nick, thanks for collating. This got me thinking, Skilton had a black VX4/90 funny car? Someone else did a rear engine funny car, I can see it in my memory but the names escape me. Was it Peter Crane?
This is way, way before my time, I was born in 93, and I think this is spectacular, those dudes sure knew how to have a good time.

As a child growing up at the pod during the 70's (my dad ran the BIG JOHN pro stock mustang)
I enjoyed every second of this video.
Got a nice photo of your Dads car from those times, going there as a teenager. Loved pro stock and modified.
Thanks for a great vid. Has my old car with the original owner Tony Preston at 9mins. Love the flares too!
