    In the title, you ask "how does this happen?" Back in the day, it was a PITA to get a NES to load a cartridge, so the rumored fix was to blow on the edge connectors to remove dust, A person's breath is full of moisture, perfect for causing corrosion on something like this.

    I use Meguiars All Metal Polysh. It's actually a paste used for making exhaust tips shine again, or like intake manifolds or camcovers. But it's insane how easy this stuff gets that nasty grime off.
    Using isopropyl for this stuff is a misconception. IPA is actually good for cleaning screens because it 'dissolves' grease

    I don't know if you have ever tried it but I would occasionally use braso to clean and polish up game contacts. It worked very well and it had two advantages one it would help reduce future corrosive effects and two it would help make contact because it would deposit a thin layer of copper or brass onto the contacts. You would need to be extra careful to remove any extra to prevent damage to the circuit board itself but once you had everything cleaned and stuff it would stay in nearly perfect condition for a very long time.

    • @BrainSlugs83
      @BrainSlugs83 Год назад

      Brasso worked for my games too. For some reason it's frowned upon... but like... it works really well IMHO.

    • @jedstanaland2897
      @jedstanaland2897 Год назад +1

      @Michael Jensen the reason why most of the time it is frowned upon is because with some kinds of circuit board coatings and sometimes the board itself braso can damage them if you don't properly clean it up afterwards. If you are actually doing your job well then you should already be cleaning up the board and such so you shouldn't have any problems. It's particularly good for preservation in most cases where you're very attentive to your job but if you don't do a good job then you are just as bad as if you had never used it or misused it. Braso has metal in it along with a chemical that deposits that metal onto existing metals. It works particularly well when you get matching metals to do your jobs with. For example iron on iron, brass for brass, copper, silver ect. They make many other types of braso that you can purchase however they can also make you have problems on rare occasions if you use miss matching base metals and deposit metal. You can also find composite braso that deposits a mixture of metals that results in a very high corrosion resistance for whatever you use it on. The other reason why I have seen it frowned upon is cost, typically the costs of doing an extra good job will be three to five times the cost of doing it wrong or cheaply but I would rather do it correctly once than cheaply.

    The best method I've found for cleaning edge connectors is also the cheapest. Just take a piece of printer paper, fold it three times to make a small rectangle, soak one edge with a little contact cleaner (isopropyl alcohol also works -- just takes a little longer), and scrub the contacts with the wet edge. I've cleaned carts that were much worse than this one in about a minute using this method.

    Glad that Deoxit exists from that recent DK Oldies scandal video from a couple of days ago. It took me forever to get rid of corrosion with a pink eraser, and spraying contact cleaner directly onto a microfiber cloth, and going to town on it with it. Some NES games took half an hour to clean out they were so darned corroded. Going with Deoxit and a magic eraser from now on. It makes sense now why NES games are so corroded; so much moisture from blowing.

      @@MorsAlgic You have to remember also that condition matters, and 300 pounds? Of your money may be for mint in box.
      Another thing to take in consideration is that the price that something is listed at doesn't mean it'll ever sell at that price. It's all a question of whether or not someone wants to spend that much money on it. You can try to put it up for the most you think you can sell it for, but it may sit there for a while for someone to want to buy it, if they ever do.
      I once put a car part up on ebay that I never got a chance to install in my car before it got totaled. I put it up for twice what I paid for it. It sat there relisting automatically for around a year, and I had actually forgotten about it. One day it sold and it felt like a bonus. The same thing can apply to games.

      Either you have too many programs running and not enough ram, or you have a mechanical hard drive that is just old.
      My laptop from 2016 had its mechanical hard drive give out last year, so I replaced it with an SSD and now it boots and loads apps significantly faster.

    • @ephgm
      @ephgm Год назад

      Almost every time I see a laptop with a mechanical drive, it runs horribly. It doesn't matter how much you play with the software, it still crawls. If someone comes into my store and complains that their computer is slow, I take it in, then I turn it on when I have the chance and the first thing I do is check to see if it has a mechanical drive. If it does, I tell them it needs to be replaced. I don't even have to bother playing with the software unless something is noticeably wrong, but I still check it before I finish it anyway. I clone the drive if it's possible so I don't need to reload and the customer has all their stuff the way they are used to it. Most people do have a few things they don't need, but nothing usually makes anywhere close to the speed difference between mechanical and solid state.
      The only other thing that could make a difference that you can change is if you have less than 4gb of ram. Windows 10 and 11 both run horrible if you're running 1 or 2gb, even with a solid state. However, if you have at least 4gb of ram already, adding more usually won't make too much of a difference, at least not nearly as much as replacing a mechanical drive with an SSD. The whole reason for RAM is that your computer stores recent data in it and replaced the oldest data with new data from the hard drive as it's needed. All data you need goes to RAM first and then to the CPU for it to process it. Hard drives are typically the slowest component in your computer, that's why RAM exists and why your computer runs better with more RAM; because it doesn't have to keep getting all the data from the hard drive every time you need it if it's already in RAM. Switching to an SSD eliminates a huge bottleneck for how fast your CPU can receive data to process, and makes it so adding more RAM usually doesn't matter much since it can get data from the SSD almost as fast.
      You can also blame the CPU for some of the speed too if it's a really bad one. Anything Intel Celeron, Atom, Pentium, or AMD A or E series are garbage, but you won't be able to replace them without replacing your whole laptop. AMD E2 chips with an SSD and 8gb of RAM will still run like it's got a brand new mechanical, absolutely horribly.
      When I first switched to solid state on my desktop, it went from taking about 4.5 minutes to boot and be usable to about half a minute. It's even faster than that now that I'm running an 11th gen Intel i9 with 64gb 4000mhz DDR4 RAM with an M.2 NVME Gen 4 SSD instead of a SATA SSD. It boots in less than 10 seconds.
