I didn’t wear or like perfume until I was introduced to the niche. My first one was Atelier Cologne and I liked how unique they smell but got frustrated by their bad longevity. Then I jumped into By Kilian, Parfum de Marly, Amouage, Frederick Malle and MFK. These have way better performance and found many more unique scents from them. So I never own a bottle of designer perfume. Now I’m addicted to perfumery. Thanks for the information!

Thanks for the 30,000-foot macro view of the fragrance industry, Sebastian. I can't help but wonder how conglomerates negatively influence (in terms of originality and quality) their acquired niche brands and pull them towards the mainstream designer world until the fragrances are no longer original nor niche. As you say, Indy / Artisanal is the new niche.

Each Guerlain make up product I've tested smelled AMAZING. Best example: the Petit Robe Noire lipstick. Instead of making scented soaps and candles, they make scented make up. They do emphasize how important a scent is in all of their products. I don't know if it makes Guerlain niche, but that doesn't matter - their fragrances and make up are top quality.

Thanks for making this video, I was really interested in your opinion on this topic.
In my mind lumping jewelry, glassware, makeup, skincare, luxury car brands, etc. in with designer houses is too general. To me "designer" = high end fashion houses... but the more I specify/try to categorize these things in my mind the less meaning they have.
At the end of the day if it's unique, interesting, and well made, it's worth discussing; if it isn't it isn't.

I always wonder why anyone could label Guerlain designer - their heritage is in perfumery, their fragrances are more niche in style and whilst they might sell make-up, that's very different to say clothing or sunglasses. Definitely niche for me.

Great insights Sebastian. My idea of what’s niche and designer certainly echoes yours. Indie is certainly the way I’m leaning now apart from a few exceptions (Clive Christian is my guilty pleasure!). I appreciate the creativity allowed by independence from a larger organisation. Also, I would rather give my hard earned money to someone who’s pricing reflects the true value of the scent rather than some arbitrary mark up associated with larger organisations who have cut the base materials to the bone. Well, at least I live in hope that is the case!

I completely agree with you on this point.
In my view, fragrance is already a niche market, so in order to not be redundant I think niche should be a term used only for brands that make fragrance their only product. So, they are a niche company in a niche market. I think the 'niche style' designers should just be referred to as exclusive/private lines, since they are less available and usually much more expensive. I have thought about this a lot LOL and I have changed my opinion, but as of now this is what I think is the most logical. Since fragrance is already a niche market (just for people who enjoy fragrances) then saying that a designer, who makes other products, is also niche just makes it more confusing. To make things simple, designer brands are designer, if they have exclusive, or private lines then just call it exclusive. However, niche fragrances should only be from those houses that only make fragrance, because that is their only focus and craft, just strictly products that involve fragrance.
So, Guerlain for instance is niche to me because it is a house the produces mainly fragrance as their main product and focuses the majority of their resources on producing fragrances.

I hate the snobs who try to consider Guerlain designer...

Nice info in the video. Some funny facts: when designers were great in the 60's to the early 90's, most niche houses were either inexistent or had normal prices and not so innovative fragrances. I remember when I was in England in 2005, all Creed fragrances were priced between £100-120. After they launched Aventus that got hyped by reviewers...well we all know what are their prices now. The difference is not improved quality or performance, but brand value. I agree that lately the designers launch poor fragrances that are very similar. Maybe 10% of designer fragrances launched every year are good. So here niche wins. I also find it funny that some niche houses copy designer fragrances and some of them can be considered clone niche houses - Parfums de Marly is the best example. Not the mention Jeremy's or other reviewers "houses". You are very lucky that you can afford some great niche fragrances that are really innovative. However paying $ 200 or even more than $ 2000 for 100 ml of fragrance is just not possible for most people.

Question, would a house like Diptyque be considered niche when they also make candles, skin care products, and air fresheners? And if they are considered niche, why wouldn't Guerlain be niche as well?

I find niche everything that smells kinda different. For example, Zara Rich, warm, addictive is niche af to me. Same with BR540 and Kalan, for example.
Other Parfums de Marly I don't consider niche as much, like Darcy and Saffanad. Although I like them, I feel like I've smelled them before.

Niche also = not wanting to smell like everyone else, someone who wants something more exclusive, intriguing, interesting.

Very interesting, good vid, i guess I'm not a total frag head, I like fragrances that are wearable and smell good, lol, designer or niche. Have great night.

Could you share which indie/artisanal fragrance shops are in San Francisco? I live in the South Bay, it would be wonderful to visit them. Thanks!!

You turned me on to the Designer Frags that I never would’ve batted an 👁 to: Van Cleef and Arpels are Really Nice
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 and downright cheap on Fragrancenet!
Tom Ford(The Eva Monroe is responsible for my TF love) But Dior exclusifs...Chanel... Sebastian YOU turned me into a Nichehead😂😂😂

    Niche or die for me.
I don’t want to notice my scent on every 10 people .
I have one Artisanal I do love .
    😊 Great job.

Hi from France! According to you, when did we begin to speak about " niche fragrances"? Which one would be the oldest? Some people say that Lutens perfumes are "niche", all right he does'nt create clothes or glasses, but we find him in big shops in France like Sephora...So for me it is not. What do you think about that.?

Niche frags junkie since trying 1 Mancera ! I’ve been paying the mortgage on that house ever since ! 🤦🏿‍♂️

I do not consider Mancera niche. Cheap and chemical smell with 95% of them.

I agree with you, but I’ve watched an interview with Frederic Malle in instagram, and he said that his house is not a niche brand, and asked not to name it so. He’s trying to build something luxurious like Chanel.

In other words he wants to make copious amounts of money...I guess he sees niche as limiting in terms of building his capital. That said his perfumes are worthy!

I hope he's able to do it. Many rare ingredients are more costly, so perfumers without the cash will be forever critcized for their "synthetic" frags.

I feel like I need to take a test about this ... as far as niche fragrances from Lush Cosmetics, Molten Brown and Pennhaligons come I to play . Are they categorized as niche . ? I’m loving more niche as I get into more bedspoke fragrances since niche smell more higher quality.

I would certainly classify those brands you mentioned as niche. Now once again what is really niche? In the end I am only distinguishing between if they make clothes, jewelry, cars etc or not! :)

Guerlain is Niche in my opinion as they started as a perfumery
