Hopper is a villain among villains. Strong, firm, fair in a way, and does not take shit from anyone. He see's the bigger picture, and even foreshadowed the Ants uprising. His demeanor chills to the bone and his glare snares you in place. And when he shouts, "LET'S RIDE!" Do not ever exhale in relief. It only means disaster is coming with ever beat of air from his wings and the wings of his men.
@1234 He's very brutal (if effective), and unapologetic and unremorseful about his acts, and he acts a lot like a gang leader. Plus he treats his brother like shit, I don't see that being a necessary part of the 'brutal reality of life'. And whose to say grasshoppers in this universe have to use intimidation tactics on the ants and can't have a diplomatic trade deal with them?
It's so weird how uncommon it is to see a villain (especially one from a kid's movie) understand the illusionary nature of power more than most other villains in ADULT media.
This scene is amazing. Hopper knows the ants can rebel at any time. He points out the importance of getting respect from the ants because they are more numerous. And if the ants realize their advantage in numbers that will lead to their downfall. He is ruthless and brutal but also smart he wants to keep the ants in fear while they live a life of luxury and comfort.
@@aceclover758 then again maybe one colony rebelled against him tied him up and attempted to sacrifice him to a bird near by as a rebellious ritual for his abusive crimes.
Hopper: "Come on, let me hear you say it." Loco: "It was just one ant!" Hopper: "NO!... Ha ha ha, no, not that, the other thing." Axel: "Are you kiddin'?" Hopper: *"WRROOOONNNGG!!!"*
This is why hopper is one of my favorite Pixar villains. I hated ones as a kid who were comedically ignorant and dumb. Hopper isn’t the strongest, but he’s smart and knows his weaknesses. He knows how to spot holes in his power structure and how to fix them.
Hopper dumping all that grain on those 3 really hammered the point home. A single grain or two wouldn't hurt you, but if there's at least 50 or 100, now it's an actual problem. To show your dominance over them and guarantee their loyalty, you need to remove any thought of rebellion or even back-talk from their minds.
I just realized that Walking Dead Season 7 basically stole the plot of A Bugs Life..... Ricks group (the ants) are forced to work for Negan (Hopper) and the Saviors (the grasshoppers) in order to stay alive. Negan is very similar to Hopper. He uses force and intimidation to get his way and even kills his own ppl to prove a point (like the scene here). He understands that Rick and his group(the ants) are tougher then they let on so is always using submission tactics to keep them in control. Too bad they will fight back and now Negan is worried about losing his power just like Hopper
Ryan Curtin I feel that Negan isn't that bad of a bad guy. In the comics when David was about to rape Holly(No Sasha) Negan was infuriated. He condemns rape. He killed Spenser because he thought he was a spineless coward. He is still a bad guy, though. Killing Glenn (And Abe in the show), tossing grenades onto Alexandria, using Gregory to force the Hilltop out of the war (in the comics he held him hostage and he had influence before Maggie took over.) There's a graphic novel about how Negan became the tyrannical leader of the apocalypse. I'm just saying that he's bad but just not evil. Not the Gov was evil. More so in the comics.
@@codename617 he is not that bad of a guy I agree. I've looked ahead and see where is arc takes him. His actions prior now that I've gotten to know his character are what any leader would consider if they were smart in a zombie apocalypse

Hopper is the very definition of a leader. He oversees everything and never leaves anything to chance. He puts his foot down and disposes of anyone who questions his word.

Tbh Hopper probably showed up to the colony one day with the gang and shoved himself on them by force saying “there are bigger insects that can take advantage” brought fear to them and they agreed to feed him in return for protection. Much like how the mafia did stuff.
The same way the government controls the people through fear of the consequences of revolting. And just like the government, if the people ever came together and used their numbers to their advantage, we would “outnumber them 100 to 1 and there goes their way of life”
Hopper: It's not about food! It's about keeping those ants in line! Heath Ledger's Joker: It's not about money. It's about sending a message. Does anyone else feel like Nolan took inspiration from Hopper's quote?
It's kind of funny that the only reason Hopper has a problem with the ants in the first place is entirely Flick's fault lol. I also love that Hopper doesn't lose himself to sheer impulse without reason or provocation. He likes it when a situation is simple and clearly understood.
2:102:11 Well, how about this?! - Hopper is truly demonstrating about how ants can defeat them with overwhelming numbers by dumping grain on his own men.
No kidding his part on the Florida bugs life attraction made Disney themselves but up a warning sign A WARING SIGN *IN DISNEY* **ABOUT CHILDREN BEING SCARED** That’s how your fact stays a fact
He is a badguy but he is a smart badguy, he doesn't get mad at his brother for questioning him as it wasn't even his idea, another quote i enjoyed that he told to the new queen ant: "first rule of leadership, **every thing is your fault** " which to say that its job of a leader to take responsibility for actions of thier subordinates.
Wow. This brings back some nostalgia. I remember seeing Hopper as a little kid and being kinda scared lol- Just coming back to this today because I plan on making something with the audio. I've said it before, I think Hopper is the best Pixar Villain aside from Syndrome. He was surprisingly smart and knew that the ants were stronger than his gang. Most villains are just like " LeTs Go TaKe Em DoWn " without having any concern for what they could get themselves into. I wish Pixar made more villains like Hopper. He was such a great one. I hope we see more of his type.
Hopper's always been one of my favorite Pixar villains, intimidating desgin and voice, absolutely brutal and one of the few villains that knows full well the heroes could beat him and makes sure they don't know that too.
If a Bug's Life were given a remake where all the characters are humans, I feel this scene would earn an R rating as Hopper straight up killed off three of his own guys for questioning his authority, AND to make a point to the rest of his gang. That's the kind of thing you could see in a Crime Drama like Scarface, or The Godfather.
Molt: Heya Hop! Hopper: Go away! Molt: That’s fine...then I won’t tell you my idea. Hopper: Good. Molt: Okay okay I’ll tell you anyway. I don’t know why but I always laugh so hard after that sequence! 😂
I find it odd that there are no females in Hopper's gang considering that there were female ants in the ant colony but no female grasshoppers in Hopper's gang at all.
Hopper did it right a stereotypical villan would just yell at molt and probably be hated by his minions hopper has the sense to act like a caring friend and show his minions the reasons behind his actions at least he rules through more than fear
2:00 Hopper: Did that hurt? 1st grasshopper: Nope Hopper: How bout this one? 2nd grasshopper: are you kidding? The way hopper asks is dumb and yet funny

He is ruthless and brutal but also smart he wants to keep the ants in fear while they live a life of luxury and comfort.
his scar tells me he already live through another ant uprising.
No, the scar if from a bird he survived and managed to escape from
@@aceclover758 somehow lol. Also on a fandom page it stated that Hopper was blind in that eye, which im not sure about.
@@aceclover758 then again maybe one colony rebelled against him tied him up and attempted to sacrifice him to a bird near by as a rebellious ritual for his abusive crimes.
As a kid I didn't realize that those 3 died underneath all of that grain.
Me either
I love the disgusted look on Hopper's face when Molt "molts" right in front of him while he's getting the massage. Always cracks me up.
Very funny 😄
It's also because it's reminding him that the deadline of "when the last leaf falls" is coming up.
Kevin Spacey is an incredible actor.
And yet a bad person
Hopper: "Come on, let me hear you say it."
Loco: "It was just one ant!"
Hopper: "NO!... Ha ha ha, no, not that, the other thing."
Axel: "Are you kiddin'?"
Hopper: *"WRROOOONNNGG!!!"*
Yeah...Okay, Kid.
JohnnyBoy98 You don’t get the reference, do you?
Lol
This is why hopper is one of my favorite Pixar villains. I hated ones as a kid who were comedically ignorant and dumb. Hopper isn’t the strongest, but he’s smart and knows his weaknesses. He knows how to spot holes in his power structure and how to fix them.
“They talk fancy to me I get confused” 😂😂😂😂😂
Hopper: *Grrr.* 😠
Guys... order another round because we're staying here!
YEAH! 😀😃
Silverdust engine92 what was I thinking going back to ant island I mean we just got here and we got enough food for the winter right why go back
Gabriel LOPEZ but... there was that one ant that stood up to me
Hopper dumping all that grain on those 3 really hammered the point home. A single grain or two wouldn't hurt you, but if there's at least 50 or 100, now it's an actual problem. To show your dominance over them and guarantee their loyalty, you need to remove any thought of rebellion or even back-talk from their minds.
Good think Flik knew the secret to beating hopper, and the ants, despite rejecting him, actually listened
I liked Frozen or Zootopia but, seriously, Disney never topped this scene.
Disney can teach ya some shit
mad pariah B
Learn that pixar and Disney might live in the same roof
But they have different movies
Agueda García Méndez
Eldor503 This was made by Pixar before Disney bought them out
I just realized that Walking Dead Season 7 basically stole the plot of A Bugs Life.....
Wow they totally did aswell lol
Oh stfu. This plot is used so many time in other movies, etc.
The Savior's outnumber Rick's community alone. That's why he needed others to join his.
Ants = common man
Grasshoppers = bankers, corporations and the rich
*Grasshoppers= bankers, corporations, the rich who lobby the government and the worst of all: Government itself.
Capitalism and rich arr ok if there nationalistic and limited
The rest fuck em
And those 3 grasshoppers that were killed are the people who try to change things or defy the evil rule, or to expose crimes of people in power, and are eliminated. some examples that come to mind, julian assange, edward snowden, jim traficant, more recently epstein
Thats the whole point of this film. To portray our society in a way thats child friendly.
Hopper is the very definition of a leader. He oversees everything and never leaves anything to chance. He puts his foot down and disposes of anyone who questions his word.
That's the definition of an authoritarian leader.
a leader that the world needs the most XD
My favorite part is his “did that hurt? how about that? How about this? Just because it shows how slippery of a slope he knows it is. If they are ever allowed to realize that they can go after the grasshoppers, it’s already over.
Molt: He's quite the motivational speaker, isn't he?
Me: Yes Molt. He really is.
Robert Treacy Molt: says dumb thing that upset hopper (under the influence and instruction from his friends)
*friends got killed*
Molt: "he's quite the motivational speaker, isn't he?"
dude wtf they just killed your friends -_-
Gotta give Hopper credit, he's definitely one of the most genre savvy animated villains ever.
the sound effects like the antennas twitching and the eye blinking are freaking brilliant in this movie.
It's a nice attention to detail how Hopper immediately tenses up when Molt shows up, I felt that.
Molt is like most younger siblings. So annoying
never knew this was kevin spacey
Robbie Jordan yeah i always thought it was James Woods
*Riots going on* RUclips “yep let’s recommend this” crazy how fitting it is though.
I kinda want to see how they got into that agreement with the ants in the first place.
And just like the government, if the people ever came together and used their numbers to their advantage, we would “outnumber them 100 to 1 and there goes their way of life”
@@MrBubblecake more like 10000 to 1
They should make that into a movie
@@timmythetooth2587 Hopper Jr.
This movie had a huge influence on me and basically defines my world view now as an adult.
2:52
Look at Thumper; he seems to be the only one who feels prepared.
This movie came out in 1998. 22 YEARS AGO. And yet this one scene describes America today.
The grasshoppers are the government and the ants are the citizens of the US.
People talking about animated movie villains often forget how Pixar made a grasshopper look legitimately menacing.
Hopper: It's not about food! It's about keeping those ants in line!
Heath Ledger's Joker: It's not about money. It's about sending a message.
Does anyone else feel like Nolan took inspiration from Hopper's quote?
This is a great scene which reflects the society we live in today to a tee
+Peter Dulson True!

@@DealerJack10 no it is so accurate
This says a lot about our society
Kevin Spacey evidently prepped for Frank Underwood and 'House of Cards' WAY in advance...
Nope. He's like that forever.
Oof
That's a bullet chasing Hopper's lying on.
And looks like it been fired.
2:08 I love the subtle detail of the psychotic grasshopper in the middle looking at them as if KNOWING what Hopper was up to. He saw some things.
He's Hopper's muscle and personal "attack dog". He's definitely seen and helped his boss murder others before, lol.
@@patronsaintofprocrastination What do you think Atta and the other's would do if they saw Hopper picking Flik up and giving him a spanking
2:11 I never realized those grasshoppers died as a kid
How do you even know that for sure?
I used To Have a VHS of "A Bug's Life" and I saw this scene about The Word "Vice President".
Very underrated villain
Hopper is the first villain to not underestimate his enemy ...
The first Pixar villain anyway.
It's kind of funny that the only reason Hopper has a problem with the ants in the first place is entirely Flick's fault lol. I also love that Hopper doesn't lose himself to sheer impulse without reason or provocation. He likes it when a situation is simple and clearly understood.
2:10 2:11 Well, how about this?! - Hopper is truly demonstrating about how ants can defeat them with overwhelming numbers by dumping grain on his own men.
Hopper was definitely one of the scariest villains in Disney history.
💀💀💀💀💀
No kidding his part on the Florida bugs life attraction made Disney themselves but up a warning sign
A WARING SIGN *IN DISNEY* **ABOUT CHILDREN BEING SCARED**
That’s how your fact stays a fact
He is a badguy but he is a smart badguy, he doesn't get mad at his brother for questioning him as it wasn't even his idea, another quote i enjoyed that he told to the new queen ant: "first rule of leadership, **every thing is your fault** "
which to say that its job of a leader to take responsibility for actions of thier subordinates.
Plus he did get slapped.
Richard Kind (Molt) has one of those voices that's instantly recognizable, and he's so good in every role he plays.
why is this recommended to me TEN YEARS LATER, RUclips?
I suggest u just send a messenger? Everything burn?
Hopper's speech is one of the best parts of this movie, and this movie is great overall so that's means a lot
Casual look into every WEF meeting.
For a G-rated film, Hopper is one sadistic villain
Who would have guessed that the real Kevin Spacey turned out to be more evil than Hopper...
😂😂😭😭😵😵💀💀⚰️⚰️👻👻
What do you mean?
"He's quite the motivational speaker, isn't he?"
Yes, quite.
Rated R for that? I seen more violence in PG movies.
I thought he killed two here, who was the third?
A Bug's Life is probably one of Pixar's most adult films.
tuco be like
Wait... so in this Kevin Spaceys character is President?
House of Bugs...
Half Life 3 confirmed!
Jesus Christ
Lol 2:17 that look you give someone when your completely done with their shit
Strettger he's like "bitch stfu!"

Kevin Spacey Was Great As Hopper One of The Best Speeches Ever By a Villain!
Hopper was quite the villain, I always loved his lines
The algorithm deigned I watch this in the Quarantine of 2020. Thy will be done.
Molt: Heya Hop!
Hopper: Go away!
Molt: That’s fine...then I won’t tell you my idea.
Hopper: Good.
Molt: Okay okay I’ll tell you anyway.
I don’t know why but I always laugh so hard after that sequence! 😂
Hopper will step aside and just watch as the life leaves your eyes..
I find it odd that there are no females in Hopper's gang considering that there were female ants in the ant colony but no female grasshoppers in Hopper's gang at all.
@Malik Roman You're talking about mantises considering that female grasshoppers don't eat the males during or after mating.
Four, counting the colony doctor, Flora.
Grasshopper: “Then at least the genius will get smacked and not us.”
Hopper: *hold my grain*
Hopper the true politician lol.
2:09 Thumper is actually tamed here. I bet Hopper wanted him to act rabid as much as possible to scare the ants when at Ant Island
U can definitely see how tame he is in the outtakes to the point where he actually talks
Hopper did it right a stereotypical villan would just yell at molt and probably be hated by his minions hopper has the sense to act like a caring friend and show his minions the reasons behind his actions at least he rules through more than fear
2:00
Hopper: Did that hurt?
1st grasshopper: Nope
Hopper: How bout this one?
2nd grasshopper: are you kidding?
The way hopper asks is dumb and yet funny
For me, that is the reason why the 3rd time Hopper asks is such a punch in the gut.
I used to think my life was a tragedy, now I realize it's A Bug's Life.
*WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY*
I like how these guys remind me of a mafia or mob, they are a small gang can intimidate an entire colony. Kinda like how Al Capone's gang scared all of Chicago
I used to rewind this speech over and over again and had no idea why. Aside from the fact that he literally just killed three of his own men just to make a point.
