I'd kinda like to see a video comparing modern standards to those of decades past, 90's and earlier, I bet that would be miles away from current standards. I had a variety of lizards as a kid in the 90's, looking back I feel so bad for them because I knew next to nothing about care at the time.
I have a guide to terrariums from back in the days and there's a section for adding small animals and oooh boi. The poor anoles. they say 1 anole per 10 gallon I think and also call them chameleons. They encourage cohabing and don't even talk about feeding them
Hey bro, nice video but I just wanted to say thanks to you and reptilliatus. You guys helped me get back into the hobby after 7 years. I have finally built a giant 3m x 1m x 2m enclosure for my blue tongue skink and all this information has helped so much. Thanks you guys!
I like that the old timey advice was so accurate! It’s discouraging that no one addresses that beardies sold in pet stores are just barely out of the egg. Their care differs from an adult, plus, being so tiny, hints at their fragility, and really highlights an advantage of getting them through a breeder, who will have hand tamed, and started them on veggies.Yes, this subject gets me very ranty!
I actually really like this kind of video. I would like you to tear some people apart though because there are such bad care guides out period as always love ya!
The way I see it, good info is good info. Some aspects of herp keeping have changed dramatically over the years and some have not. When I was young, I kept eastern newts in a hi-if lid. Why? Well, it provided about 5 gallons of water spread out over a decent space. It was from an old 70s stereo and was rather large (16”X16”X8”). I placed a window screen over the top to prevent jumping. They were store bought even though they were found locally and I fed them freeze dried tubifex or blood worms. I had them a couple of years, but one winter the house must have gotten too cold and they didn’t make it. I was 10 too, so I had the knowledge I had access to…which at the time wasn’t much. No internet, pet stores didn’t always have knowledge of the animals they sold, no locally veterinary care for amphibians, and I was 10. Now, they aren’t as popular in the pet trade and our local populations are nearly nonexistent. If I were to keep something like that again, I would probably choose something that doesn’t require brumation. I know there’s better thermoregulating equipment out there now, but having the dedicated space in my small home would be difficult. As always, good information for the hobbyist/enthusiast.
Hi Adam, I love your videos and you're helping me a lot with my little dinosaurs. I have a little request: I know that most of your audience is from US and Canada and It's pretty logical that you give all the temperature information in fahrenheit, but i'm from europe and have to pause the video every now and then just to check the celsius equivalent to be sure I'm understanding correctly the guides. I think it would be very useful to include (maybe with only a little note on the video) the equivalent on celsius, because when I listen "80-90 degrees" I inmediately think about almost boiling water. Keep on the great work!
I was doing this for a decent amount of time and got a lot of pushback about it sounding annoying and too much like an instructional video rather than something light as is intended. Really ruined the vibe of the videos. But I get the confusion, I'm Canadian, I use Celsius, I've had to convert my whole life too haha.
Thank you for making all your care guides and videos I recently got a new Leopard gecko and your guides have helped me so much I’m going to do his enclosure and make it more naturalistic
I agree, these types of guides are great for first timers looking into what to expect when owning a beardie or ball python. No bad information on either video.
The memes are everything in this video 😂 I think it would be really cool to do a comparison of care guides from the 70s etc but showing visual comparisons. Like a ball python in a 20 gallon - for shock factor! 🐍
This was interesting, nice to have a positive review of old content for a change. That said, I and I'm sure lots of other people would enjoy a Wickens version of Ed and Emily's "Storytime with Rex," where they read through REALLY old care guides for alligators (ie pamphlets from 1950s-1970s). Those guides were so bad they were both terrifying and hilarious and I'm sure looking at some similarly old care guides for other species would be equally entertaining.
Great video Adam, very informative, especially the BP part, my friend wants me to look after his BP while he goes on vacation (must be nice) Never cared for a ball python before, wish me luck!🤞🏻
It's kind of sweet that you chose two informative pretty good videos. I was definitely expecting you to find some really egregious content and tear it apart. Then I remembered you are Canadian and go stereotypes!!
Yeah, I think if he was talking 15 or 20 years ago that be different. But eight or 10 years really isn't that huge of a difference in care guides as far as I've noticed anyway. For most species
I think old video did a good job getting the basic info to get someone started and they continue to do research. It’s good info to see if someone interested in getting this animal to be something that they would still be interested in after watching video. Maybe they didn’t realize they needed heat and they live in a cold area and now realize oh I better not go this direction.. just an example
Great video. I like longer videos. And yeah, thought you were going to rip into some people on this one. But its cool to see the progression. And that therewere some older videos doing reptiles and keeping justice. And was my first video i watched again when i got home I usually watch Brian earlier, but he posts in the morning. And that Dav,you never know when he will. Great vid, keep it all,all that, etc.
I loved that those where already realistic of the basic need for the animal what is now conciderated as basic husbandry. Btw the sand that was suggested to actually use was the same as the one we use for kids sand boxes so not that much dust within it. Around 09 was when my ex had a beared dragon as the calcium sand was already causing trouble, at the place of the UV light it was suggested that said animal where receiving direct sunlight trough a window and a blacklight /UV light too or a full spectrum plant lights.
Awesome video, super nostalgic tho I was def expecting you to rip apart some bs guides. I'd love to see that video. This reminded me of a BP I knew as a kid that was about 6.5ft. The owner was convinced she was a hybrid if some sort, but maybe it was just a Volta. Super beautiful and comically docile. Happy New year, Adam. Subscribing to your channel was a highlight of this year for me.
I do appreciate that our care has evolved as the years go. But I would be lying if I said I didn't want just a singular "definitive guide" that takes away a lot of variables for first timers
Hi Adam excellent as always I am not a keeper personally but I really enjoyed this is really interesting to see how things are changed over the years how about a couple of really bad ones next time might make it really really interesting take care and keep up the good work
I have a question for u? I'm ordering a t8 from animal plastics it's 47 3/4 l x 23 1/2 d x 11 3/4 h . What would be a good heat panel to use 40 or 80 watt for a ball python. Love your video's they are helpful and fun to watch .
Keep in mind that RHPs aren’t a good primary heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option during the day since they produce infrared A and B like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue. RHPs only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. They’re good for nighttime, though. Also, I’d get an enclosure with at least 2’ of height. You need space for a deep substrate layer, climbing enrichment, and the heating/lighting.
I remember when tarantula kat did a reaction video on howcasts tarantula video and a bunch of people were hating on her because they were too stuck in their old keeping ways and said that jungle bob knew more because he was a guy.
Dude! Your videos are awesome! I love you and your content! You also helped me so much with your information! Keep up the great work! Happy new year btw 😁
8 years ago I kept an adult male BP as was ‘common’ 8 years ago, humidity wasn’t really a thing like you said, he had a 20 gallon high and his hide was a 3 or 4 inch diameter piece of PVC pipe. But I was extremely lucky with Dratini, he loved to eat so I never had feeding issues with him. He was a true champ at meal time. I wish I had opted to keep him after my car accident and I rehomed the majority of my collection because I wasn’t able to care for them properly on my own, took me years to get back to where I could have snakes again, I am not lizard or turtle able they require a lot more care feeding more often, bugs for a lot of them, more cleaning more often, anyways. I didn’t think it fair to make my kid hold everything so I could take forever cleaning one armed. I made him with Toothless though. He loved her as much as I did though so it worked out. I kept Toothless my breadie and my box turtles. Yes you are right beardies can bite, but usually won’t. Toothless bit me, or rather she chomped me trying to get at her favorite treat, fresh raspberries. I did not get my fingers out of the way fast enough when she saw what I had for her, and she drew blood but it was totally my fault I knew her love of raspberries. She always looked like a zombie after a meal when she was done eating her face and chin just covered in raspberry juice. Beardies are the best pet lizard in my opinion. Toothless was not content to just sit on my shoulder like your Diamond is, she wanted down to explore and would make it happen on her own if I didn’t set her on the floor.
I think if you show what is the new trend from these past videos that you mention at the end it would be nice. Like the new mentality or new ways to do it. Not only videos from RUclips but all reptile product has some basic information. It would be nice to see what has change since.
Nice video ! What size do you recommend for a adult ball python, I trying to buy one from Kate's but I don't know my measurements that well. Please don't judge me.
I had to get all my care information from books, reptiles magazine and some help with a reptile keeper I knew at the San Diego Zoo, but this would be like 30 years ago, 28 years ago, somewhere around there. I no longer have any of my old books, I kind of wish I did to look back and compare.
Shit I myself gave old info like last year an learned the sponge in the water wasn't a thing we owned a petstore an back in the day we used to do that an honestly I was taught that growing up but info does evolve witch is awesom
When I saw the title of vid I thought you were going to talking about old care guide *books*! Haha! Seeing how care has changed from like the 50s, 80s, etc would be interesting with probably quite a few facepalm moments!
The "absolutes" part I am 100% spot on with you! That and blanket statements ( but you use those ;) ) Saying we all do this...nope there will be at least someone that doesn't, "we all like", "we all want", "Nobody..." etc People use that type wording to look like they have more people on their side, 'us against the world', but rather the world and I vs you, type thing OR to cover their choice or mistake. "We all pick our noses", not true. "we all have wet the bed, not true"You know how we all throw garbage in our cars", not true! See where I am going? Blanket statements and absolutes go hand in hand and they are not accurate...ever!! ( hahaha..did you catch what I ...nevermind)
I used to have a care guide for Savannah monitors from the late 80s. Of course it recommended bad substrate but It also said you could feed them canned cat food which you can but it is way too fatty for them. It also said hard broiled eggs. Kinda wish I still had it cause I'm sure there is lots of other egregious bad info. Those old care guides were more like death guides.
Does anyone remember the channel before howcast that did the exact same thing as in showing only tutorials but I remember it being called something village. Idk the exact name I just remembered it had village in the name. They had a bigger guy that worked in a pet store who made most of their reptile videos
In the late 80s early 90s my dad got me a clown agama, he was pretty chill and loved being handled. The info about caring for lizards was mostly unavailable so we got bad advice from our vet. Spike was spoiled for the years we had him but it could have been way better.
Honestly I didn't know what how cast was I figured it was a series of like guide books to taking care of reptiles and you were going to do a review on the information contained in Old reptile care books kind of like Emily from snake Discovery once did with a couple of reptile care books that are older than her
You ever see a care guide that says ball pythons can get stressed from too big of an enclosure? I've got this coworker who seems to think so, I'm trying to figure out where he got the idea.
It’s a widespread myth that’s completely false. There’s no such thing as too big, only too bare. If you put a snake in a bare enclosure with lots of empty space of course they’ll be stressed. But any snake can thrive in a large enclosure as long as there’s plenty of clutter and plant coverage. How does your friend think they live in the wild, where they have unlimited space? Adult ball pythons need a 4x2x2’ enclosure minimum. The enclosure should be at least as long as the snake.
Would love to just see your reaction to some really bad ones. Not for sake of drama, just to see how far we've come. Emily's video reading the 'how to care for you pet alligator' book comes to mind.
Yea it’s sad I still see pet stores that use out dated knowledge to take care of their pets and it’s truly sad. I just politely explain the proper way to keep them and if they use the info then awesome and if they don’t it just shows how that person truly is and then there are proper ways to take care of that as well 👋
Well done. I’d really like to see you rip apart bad BP videos. I think it’s important to do that so people know WHY you shouldn’t or should do certain things. 🐍❤️🐍
Regarding the "they top out at" you have to think it like the average age of animals. We say turtles get around 80 in the wild but most people are away to get this number we don't count the 94% that get eaten before reaching the 1 month old age
When I got my first reptile I got all my info online (although it was mainly because my mom said I couldn’t have a lizard that ate insects and could fit in my room and I decided that I could find something with those demands) and I felt like that was kind of standard even though it was more than 11 years ago. I was 15 and constantly online so that might have affected me and my preference
I have a jungle bob's reptile shop right by me. Its my local reptile shop! The care for beardies though is well... like petco and petsmart. Calcuim sand 40 gallon for an adult not great care. The do have a cool shop tho.
Rip other bad videos apart!#1 fan! Thank you for the awesome videos I would like to see more collaboration from you and others reptile RUclipsrs like Brian B. Or more from snake discovery! Well thanks again.

Nice video ! What size do you recommend for a adult ball python, I trying to buy one from Kate's but I don't know my measurements that well. Please don't judge me.
4x2x2
@@WickensWickedReptiles Thanks
I always look forward to your content 😀😀
thank you!
I had to get all my care information from books, reptiles magazine and some help with a reptile keeper I knew at the San Diego Zoo, but this would be like 30 years ago, 28 years ago, somewhere around there. I no longer have any of my old books, I kind of wish I did to look back and compare.
Great video as always man
Thanks for the visit
Shit I myself gave old info like last year an learned the sponge in the water wasn't a thing we owned a petstore an back in the day we used to do that an honestly I was taught that growing up but info does evolve witch is awesom
He's wearing the hat of someone really educated... 🤣 😂 🤣
education hat
It must be to hide his BIG BRAIN!
Part2 should be reciting to REALLY REALLY old care guides 1920s
Those old care guides were more like death guides.
wow eh!
Great video and we def need a part 2
Does anyone remember the channel before howcast that did the exact same thing as in showing only tutorials but I remember it being called something village. Idk the exact name I just remembered it had village in the name. They had a bigger guy that worked in a pet store who made most of their reptile videos
EXPERT VILLIAGE! Yes, I totally forgot about this!
Find a care guid from the ‘70s! Now THAT would be juicy!
In the late 80s early 90s my dad got me a clown agama, he was pretty chill and loved being handled. The info about caring for lizards was mostly unavailable so we got bad advice from our vet. Spike was spoiled for the years we had him but it could have been way better.
Honestly I didn't know what how cast was I figured it was a series of like guide books to taking care of reptiles and you were going to do a review on the information contained in Old reptile care books kind of like Emily from snake Discovery once did with a couple of reptile care books that are older than her
16:33 i saw that camera movement
As soon as he said 5 to 7 foot i went omg 😑😐 then u stopped the video I died lol
@@nightinggale6470 right, thats what i tried to tell him. I eventually had to just say I feel sorry for his snakes...
Why is it always dark outside
that's what I'm freakin' saying bro!
You should definitely rip apart some real bad ones! This was awesome, but it would still be fun to see some terrible ones
oh for sure!~
Top 5 videos with the worst information would be awesome!!!!
great idea!~
There is this one local pet store in my local mall and they have green iguanas
So fun fact I used to think they were called Bald Pythons.
bahahahhaa
And my dad used to think they were called bull pythons
Would love to just see your reaction to some really bad ones. Not for sake of drama, just to see how far we've come. Emily's video reading the 'how to care for you pet alligator' book comes to mind.
huh. i order my insects from the jungle bob ebay store a lot of times. never knew he was an oldschool youtube info dude
very cool!
The cricket: Peek-a-boo, I see you! Haha PS why is there a cricket in a BP enclosure?
time stamp?
Yea it’s sad I still see pet stores that use out dated knowledge to take care of their pets and it’s truly sad. I just politely explain the proper way to keep them and if they use the info then awesome and if they don’t it just shows how that person truly is and then there are proper ways to take care of that as well 👋
Well done. I’d really like to see you rip apart bad BP videos. I think it’s important to do that so people know WHY you shouldn’t or should do certain things. 🐍❤️🐍
Great video as always. Idea, how about joining a FB group and comparing their care guides? 🤔 that'd be interesting
Great idea! I love this!
I feel like those little care guide sheets that you get from the big chain pet stores need to be ripped apart.
100%
Regarding the "they top out at" you have to think it like the average age of animals. We say turtles get around 80 in the wild but most people are away to get this number we don't count the 94% that get eaten before reaching the 1 month old age
So far out to lunch you can't find the office 😂😂😂
When I got my first reptile I got all my info online (although it was mainly because my mom said I couldn’t have a lizard that ate insects and could fit in my room and I decided that I could find something with those demands) and I felt like that was kind of standard even though it was more than 11 years ago. I was 15 and constantly online so that might have affected me and my preference
You should check out some of the Petsmart or Petco care guides, some of them are cringe worthy.
oh no doubt!
I have a jungle bob's reptile shop right by me. Its my local reptile shop! The care for beardies though is well... like petco and petsmart. Calcuim sand 40 gallon for an adult not great care. The do have a cool shop tho.
Could you do a vid on collard lizards?
for sure!
@@WickensWickedReptiles awsome😁😁
Love the video mate am a little late but better late then never mate. ☺️👍
thanks for watching!
Rip other bad videos apart!#1 fan! Thank you for the awesome videos I would like to see more collaboration from you and others reptile RUclipsrs like Brian B. Or more from snake discovery! Well thanks again.
thanks for watching!
@@WickensWickedReptiles It is hard not to click on any of your videos if anyone out there love reptiles combined with some grade-A comedy this is the channel for you!
Yes rip apart a bad care guide!
That would be awesome haha.
coming soon!
Obviously it’s your channel and you can do what you want but imagine for a second… Gordon Ramsey slamming bad husbandry videos.
“What you want to do is make sure your tegu only eats green kale.”
“ no that makes you an idiot sandwich.”
Lol… that’s just the visual I had.
By "really old" I admit I was expecting something pre-RUclips.
Yes let’s see u rip apart some
Old care guides
woooooooo
I can’t be the only one who imagines bearded dragons having an Aussie accent
they for sure do!
Great video. You did well with this.
Here’s Adam and diamond 💎

I bet diamond or picatchu is on your lap replying to messages with u 😂
I misread this title at first. I thought it was how to care for elderly reptiles lol! But actually that topic would be really interesting. X
glad you enjoyed!
