You are very welcome and thank you for stopping by. I load a new video every Thursday and invite you to return and enjoy some good cooking and recipes.
Great video! Very informative. I'm growing cowpeas for the first time this year, and this covered all the stages of growth, which was exactly what I needed! Thanks!!!
I really appreciate this video. Thankfully, I am having a huge harvest this year and I had to look at your video again to make sure I harvest and store me peas correctly. I am leaving them on the plants to dry completely.
You are INCREDIBLE Rivet! Wow.. what an extremely helpful video and I get to same up in lights! LOL! I see exactly what you mean and I will continue to look out for all those changes on my little 8 plants. LOL. I understand everything you explained per message. That sound I remember from helping my Grandmother years ago. I know that dry paper feel too. Lots of great information here. Thank you so very much. Now.. onto compost tea making! I need to add some to my plants too.
Good for you! I wish you success and a big harvest. They so delicious cooked fresh after just shelling, but they keep well after you let them dry. If you cook them fresh, they are much creamier tasting.
Thank you for the video! I was wondering if I can harvest the green and yellow pods instead of the dry ones and then shell them and eat them right away or store them somewhere. I think my favorite stage is when the pods are yellow because they aren't too dry and not too moist. I think my question is, can you still dry the pods when they are in the yellow/green pod stage, or must you wait until they completely dry on the vine? I also read somewhere that you can harvest them at any stage, so I was wondering if that's true or not. Thanks!
Great questions Danielle! Yes you can harvest the pods at any stage and shell them for eating. I agree with you on when they are at the yellow stage for exactly those reasons; I believe they cook up the best that way, with more flavor. If you harvest them at the green or yellow stage when the beans are still "soft" and have a high moisture content, you will either have to cook and eat them relatively soon (you may ziploc bag them in the veggie drawer and they will keep a week) or, lay them out on newspaper or paper towels on in the sunshine to dry naturally in the ambient air. Indoors won't work too well as Air Conditioning will not allow enough moisture to evaporate. This drying is best done outdoors on a picnic table, etc. Once dry, either from the aforementioned method or harvesting from the dried pods, the hard, dry seeds will keep for a year in an airtight jar or container in your cupboard away from sunlight. Hope this helps~ thanks for watching and commenting!
You are so welcome Super! Glad my video helped, it was all for you. Your plants should display the same stages, so you are good to go. If you have any questions, just ask, we are all here to help each other. Check out my first two videos Making Compost Tea Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 they will explain and show you how to make it. Apologies for them being so long and drawn out but I was just starting video back then and it shows!
Have you ever transplanted a mature plant? I under estimated my cow peas, they are exploding in my raised bed. I want to move them to a trellis nearby. Thanks!
Really enjoyed your video. I'm trying to find the Italian Heirloom Black eye cowpea . No luck. Would you be willing to part with about a couple dozen of yours? Thanks Anelda
Glad to help you out! Thanks for watching. I have planted my second year harvest of them from the seeds I collected last year. Very vigorous plants and you can see them in my Garden Update 2013 video at my channel. Hope yours do well and keep us posted on your success!
Hey man, your a great teacher! Thanks for your video, you answered am lot of my questions about peas. I have a couple more. Can you store them in the freezer? How long can you store them dry?
Hey thanks Larry. you can store dried peas in the freezer for years. Just put them in a freezer storage ziploc bag and yu will be good to go for many years. If you store them in a plain ziploc bag in a cupboard, they will be good for about 2 maybe 3 years depending on the moisture. Yo want them really dry so no mold grows.
Yep, just rinse them off real quick and cook them any way you want to! A piece of country ham or some smoked hocks, a bit of onion and water and you are set for some good food.
+LilNaruto9tails That depends on the weather and temp. They are ready to harvest when the pod turns brown and dry. After that just leave them out in a pan for a day or two in your kitchen and you are good to go!
Hi, they are done drying after about between 72 and 96 hours....3 to 4 days. They will feel hard to the squeeze and when you dig a nail into them it should feel dry and hard. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks! Check out my first videos, Making Compost Tea Part 1 and Part 2, they will help you make a great tea, and that's the recipe I use today except that I get better results by bubbling it 48 hours, no less.
First time growing cowpeas and first time for watching any of your videos. Very informative!! Thank you for sharing!

What are you feeding those peas Rivet? The foliage is as dark green as a pepper plant!! Great yields too!
Just compost tea every few weeks- foliar-feeding spraying it on. They love it and the hot weather too!
Yep back in the day! Good eating too.
So if you want to eat them fresh after they dry in the pod on the vine you can cook them right away?
thank you for your response!

I used seeds that I cooked for. Seeds are growing, leafs have come out. Looking for information your video came up. Thank u for information
Glad I could help. Thanks for stopping by!

No worries, these are just the older leaves that are "spent". That happens. Your upper leaves should be nice and green still, as these are newer ones.
Hey there! How many weeks does it take for them to dry out? I'm asking out of curiosity; mainly cuz my beans are growing and I can't WAIT to pick 'em!
+LilNaruto9tails That depends on the weather and temp. They are ready to harvest when the pod turns brown and dry. After that just leave them out in a pan for a day or two in your kitchen and you are good to go!
Hey, you're welcome and appreciate your comments. Thanks!
How do you put them up? Freeze them or can them or what?
You put them in a zip lock or jar in the cupboard after their dried. I suppose you could freeze them too.
GREAT VIDEO SIR AS ALWAYS THE PEPPERS WILL BE ON THERE WAY IN ABOUT A WEEK THE ALMOST RIPE
Thanks
would it be ok to pull the green ones and leave them out to dry?
Sure, why not?
After my flowers bloom they are just falling off… any ideas?
@@bean1879 what's falling off, the pods?
Thank you, give them a try, You just basically throw them in the dirt and they will come up.
Anyone know how long or when to tell when they are done drying?
Hi, they are done drying after about between 72 and 96 hours....3 to 4 days. They will feel hard to the squeeze and when you dig a nail into them it should feel dry and hard. Thanks for watching and commenting!
HELP! I noticed this morning the bottoms leaves on my plants are yellowing...whats happening? sigh... Just the other day they were all nice and green.
Thanks! Check out my first videos, Making Compost Tea Part 1 and Part 2, they will help you make a great tea, and that's the recipe I use today except that I get better results by bubbling it 48 hours, no less.
