I am an owner of DDJ-FLX4 and I can tell what I like or dislike too. I am sorry if its too long I) Looks: I think the use of the same color is cost effective, but I would prefer another color, blue like flx6 or the old red in 400. I can live with that though. RGB is out of question because its for more expensive controllers. II) Feel: Its ok, still I believe the 400 looked better, but its sleek and nice. You can upgrade it with 3rd party knobs etc. I will do it . III) Connectivity: Now I can see that usb c is not good for secure connection, but for this entry level its fine, for home use or outdoor djing or streaming its ok, You can find quality cables and the addition of usb port for power if your laptop is not providing power (like a usb hub), its way better than a propriety power brick IV) smart CFX and Smart Fader when you open them they use one of you effect slot in Rekordbox if you are using a DDJ-XP2 or you have mapped another midi, it disables it, CFX fx2 amd smartfader fx3. a) smart CFX is a nice addition a bit limited but you can do many tricks. b) smart fader is controversial because is making transitions easier, in a way that is not easy to do manually. I use it only to my sliders, because adjusting the bpms from the one track to another. Because I dont use the crossfader to change tracks, I use sliders and filter knobs. is it a cheat? yes but if its used properly is useful helps new djs? yes it will make home party djing great experience it can help also for changing short tracks or make nice short previews. V) The microphone via USB is good addition VI) Works with Serato without having a special edition. Scratching is not its strong point, the REV line is what pioneer wants to sell. For me is a step forward but not cheap, mine was a gift, but where I live is 370Euros and most Pioneer controllers have price increase. Chip Shortage is a major issue now, and used prices are not as cheap as we would like. I want to see the replacements for DDJ 800 and 1000 to see what pioneer has learned. Choosing your software first and then your controller, pioneer making rekordbox is a HUGE plus for non scratching djs and the similar clubstyle to the most common dj gear (pioneer), it will give you muscle memory for the future. Virtual Dj works with everything, and Serato has many options as well Rekordbox has its own gear as well as Trakktor Denon Engine is another beast, especially for standalone all in one setup. cheaper than XDJs ps. You can map a midi controller like AKAI APC MINI realy easy. DDJ-XP2 is expensive. I have mapped 16 pad effects and the buttons are staying on (I havent found a way to adjust the color of the pad though) I have mapped the fx effects to the sliders. Now I am thinking what I should map to the rest pads. I have 16 free for each channel. The APC 40MKII is a beast but the same price as the DDJ-XP2 so if you have it you can use it.
Honestly, it blew my mind the first time I used it! And it DOES feel like cheating, even adding a little echo at the end to complete the mix. But hey, if it gets the crowd going, who am I to judge? Hahaha
I feel just like DJ Carlo said, it is just a tool. It opens the chance to do aggresive mixing, since you can now go from a song to another much faster than before.
Some people in the crowd might notice. 😬 Very small percentage of people though hahahah. Also it’s so much more rewarding to successfully mix in another song manually. Doing it manually also gives you the operation to do something more original when you play two songs at once. 💯 having fun is pretty much #1 priority tho so whatever floats your boat
I used to have the DDJ-200, which was a fun way to start DJ'ing, but it really lacked a lot of features, and required me to use keyboard + mouse a lot to control Rekordbox. I recently got the FLX4 and it's so awesome! I feel that it has all the features I need as a hobbyist DJ, and it'll probably take years before I'll upgrade.
here to say i’m in the EXACT same position with the DDJ-200, using rekordbox is amazing for me but it’s just a lot of clicking and typing from my pc. this will certainly make me consider the FLX4 even more! thanks man
I personally been using the Pioneer DDJ-SZ and it have EVERYTHING I ever wanted on the controller. Color cue pads, two different modes on the cue pads (Saved Loop access, making and removing them on the fly is my favorite feature of it and haven't seen Pioneer ever bring it back since 2015), Giant Jogwheels akin to that of their CDJ/XDJ Club Players, and my personal favorite, the oscillators and color FX next to the filter knobs, are my absolute favorite of them all. It also has the track needle search brought over from DDJ-SX, along with the multiple RCA outputs, Two microphone inputs, and much more, it's a DJ controller that, while its been beaten up, is still one of my favorites, despite the massive size that it can take up, even a small table. So I'll have to invest in some laptop stand that hovers over the controller at some point in the future.
As a beginner dj, I found that the FLX4 was perfect for getting off the ground and getting comfortable with learning to dj and scratch. I know most people think of the smart crossfader as a gimmick, but I found it can come in very handy for learning how a perfectly mixed track sounds like. I don't use it all the time as it feels more rewarding to mix more hands on, but for difficult transitions, I'll use it to help give me a guideline on how to mix more smoothly, and that's been very helpful. Great video review :)
how do you activate smart mix? i have mine, using serato, but when i press the smart corssfader button the tracks don't go into the same tempo :( i gave up since it's not something crucial but i'd like to know
I’m a resident dj and I’m loving my flx4. I dj for 5-6 hrs on a day and the smart fader is just saving me from memorising each transition for 250 songs.
I have it for a month now and I absolutely love it. The only "problem" I can relate to is that finish on the jog wheels (and i don't even scratch). It is a bit weird. But overall very pleasant product, def an improvement compared to the DDJ-400. My favorite thing about it are the volume faders. Those just feel premium quality. EQ knobs are also decent... Even with eyes closed you could feel it's a pioneer product.
I’m loving my Flx4, had it for a month now and it’s perfect for a level entry controller. Will probably upgrade in a year or so. I did experience the shutting down issue in the first week, but it’s been ok since then. I did experience the issue you mentioned with Searto and not all features working, so I stuck with rekordbox, which is fine. Keep you the good work and videos 👍🏻
On this point, I wish they found a way to make the unit "hug" the port a bit tighter! The USB B came off when I tried the same test with the Mixtrack Platinum, so it's really a matter of port engineering I'd say
I just got mine last week. I love it!! I'm more of a beginner bedroom DJist, a hobbyist that wants to learn the craft. I've always wanted learn it, not as a profession but for my love for EDM and song mixing since I was 20. Now at over 40 yrs old, I'm finally trying to learn it. I had bought the DDJ 200, but my Samsung updated and so I could no longer use WeDJ. Though, I started using DJay for Android afterwards and the 200, I felt I needed am upgrade since I couldn't use the pads for FX; which kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a controller. So I gave the 200 to my nephew (he has an older Android that I knew was not going to have the updates like mine), and I bought the Flx4. As a beginner DJ, I'm loving it even more than the 200, which I loved, up until the time WeDJ no longer worked with it. The smart fader is a nice feature. Fundamentals still apply (timing, eq-ing, and whether or not to use it, or to just echo out). I can't wait for Rekordbox to be fully functional with Android OS. I love being a minimalist, and I use my phone for nearly anything. Suits me just fine for what I want to get out of it for now.
Hey Carlo! You might not remember me but i have been sticking around your chnnel since 2019! I am so happy to say that I am playing my first show very soon, I just wanted to thank you for letting me learn how to DJ. First I was a DJ and then I was a music producer, you started all of this, and I really appriciate that. My best regards, DJ SIKe.
Yo mate congrats on your first gig! Do you have any advise for a beginner dj ? Like how much time per week would you dedicate to djing or good courses ? thanks in advance :)
@@MegaPetitBiscuit The main thing is practice as much as you can, but what really helped me is that fact that i make and produce music. By making you own music you bring yourself to a bigger audience, that is how I was able to play the show. Good luck dude!
No, but all the *useful* watches I've had have dots/lines/markings for the numbers. A blank watch face, with just a 12 or 6 marker on it, instantly gets a pass from me.
I have this controller… bought it like three weeks ago and it’s my first time ever djing after getting into techno a bit over a year ago. It’s been amazing for me… lots of things on it i don’t know how to use yet and with the bare minimum it’s been treating me really well. Also the usbc is really convenient! I considered getting a ddj400 at first but went for this one. I’ve been really enjoying myself. Watching this video gave me anxiety that I made the wrong choice but at the end i know that it’s phenomenal for beginner djs. Your videos are great! My best advise to people getting started is to try to contact experienced djs and ask them for advise, show them a recorded mix and they’ll give you some good pointers. Also tell them some of the things you’re doing if they can’t actually watch you play. I was making a lot of tiny mistakes that when someone pointed them out to me it really helped me improve. I always really try to study what djs are doing because the small things that experienced players do really make a big difference and usually aren’t super hard to incorporate into your habits. Cheers
My advice is to watch some RUclips videos, enrol on a beginning/ intermediate course ( cross fader, digital DJ). Organise your music library, learn to beat match by ear, as well as using visual, setting the beat grid correctly etc. you’ll be smashing it in know time
@@daza7560 Those are all things i’ve been doing! Thanks for the advice! I don’t really want to enroll in a class especially because i already have established dj friends who have tons of knowledge to share with me. Cheers man!
I already own the controller and am watching this video for fun but just wanted to say I love your B-Roll footage you film in all of your videos, they’re always so funny during a commonly serious review lol
Bro those sections where you act out exaggerated faces like where you were struggling to scratch and where you were looking at the trim knobs or discovering the smart fader were downright hilarious! Meant to tell you that on previous videos too but either way love those parts 🤣
Two comments on the Inpulse 500, Effects section can be remapped with using the mic high/low buttons and using the manual loop-in-out to setup the right beat effect section. I've had one mapping for using the Mix high/low buttons and one mapping using the Aux and Aux filter depending on the needs, so the effect section can be "fixed". But important thing to say to the very great Inpulse 500, output is very low, so usually a Audio mixer will be required ;)
Different DJs have different opinions in reviewing products, and the way you review the DDJ-FLX4 was so detailed, although there are more negative feedbacks than positive feedbacks. Keep up the good work!! Might get the FLX4 someday
Really appreciate that Christian! I tried to be as meticulous and picky as possible with the FLX4, and here we are! More of that in future release videos
I think that the "Smart Fader" is the FLX4's equivalent of the FLX6's "Merge FX" in the sense that they are gimmicks that simplify aspects of DJing. I am saying this as someone who still has a ways to go before being an intermediate DJ.
About the USB-C cable issue! I noticed myself that cable quality varies ALOT. Both in specifications (power, data transfer, features...) and also physical connector quality. I had a USB-C cable for example that came with a display monitor that would not have a strong retention once connected to my laptop and could be knocked off by moving the laptop a bit while the thunderbolt cable I got that's made by Apple can drag the monitor around on my desk. (I don't specifically endorse Apple's cables, it just happened to be what was given to me at work.) Note that it can also be controller's port too! I remember Pixel phones (don't remember the generation) had that issue too either on Day 1 or over time with use. So...yeah, I share your opinion on that even though it can be much better without ditching the USB-C connection at all just because of that varying quality in manufacturing at the moment.
Right?! They should've tried to utilize the same ports in phones. They really clamp down on the cable to make sure it doesn't pop off at the worst moments
It took me a long time to decide between the numark platinum fx and the flx4 to upgrade my numark party mix. I decided to buy the flx4 in the end. Since I already had serato dj pro, software doesnt make a big difference. I am kinda happy with my choice, but at some points I miss the feel of the numark products.
Do stems work with flx4 in serato pro? My controller just blinks whenever I try searto. Working awesome with rekordbox still. Just couldn't get it to run with serato. Any tips?
@@nudirt1274 make sure you are on the newest version of serato dj pro, older builds dont support the controller. And plug in the flx4 after opening the program.
re usb-c: if you use velcro cabel-ties you can glue a short strip to the case and secure sketchy connections that way. also the 90° angled plugs don't pull out as easy as the straight ones.
I'm glad I was able to upgrade to the DDJ 800 some time ago. I was going to get the FLX4 as a backup controller but I have changed my mind since. Don't get me wrong. I like what Pioneer did with the FLX4 and even with the little bumps you pointed out I say feel it's the entry-level controller DJs will love to own to start their journey. Great video. I enjoyed your insight.
This video has truly helped me come to my decision as a new hobbyist. I’ll be choosing the flx4. I get the best of both worlds, learning Serato ecosystem is extremely important to me but I get to have unlimited access to pioneer DJ’s program as well. I want to get into scratching as well, although it’ll be challenging on this controller it won’t be impossible. Hopefully it’ll just make me stronger scratcher in the long run! Thanks so much!!
I'm gonna buy this unit. Im going to retire my two pioneer sl 1200 that I've been using since 1997.they still work fine, but I need to start learning this new technology.
I've had it a solid month and i like it. I'm a beginner and i play to use it for latin music. A lot of features i don't know how to use properly. Devices like this should come with solid tutorials for all the features.i figured I'll learn more watching RUclips videos and pros using it.
@@djcarlo thanks. Can you upload content using the features and explaining how they work. The cfx button and that bottom right side loop button for instance. How can i tell what effect is active when using that loop button? Been staring at rekordboxike an idiot fkr a month looking for a clue. And the cfx button when i turn the nob sounds bad with multiple effects applied at once or something.
Not completely relevant but I got a DDJ-200 about 5ish months ago to start learning how to DJ and I've really liked it, but in retrospect I kind of wish I just went for a DDJ-400, because not having built-in loop controls is really annoying now that I'm getting better, I have to use my mouse to control looping, and looping in and out. Also, there aren't any buttons to change what the performance pads do, for example changing from queue points to the sampler, so if I want to do that I also have to use my mouse. Other than those two things it works great and I really enjoy it, but the lack of built in looping and performance pad controls is really annoying
I have bought the flx 4 and it is arriving today! This is the upgrade from my party mix witch started to stop working properly and I can wait to receive my controller
I personally think the impulse 500 is the best beginner to intermediate controller. For all the reasons you mentioned plus more, it's just so good. The only issue is it doesn't work with rekordbox. Also DJuced is an underrated software. (English isn't my first language so excuse that)
I'm always surprised when someone says English isn't their first language because, 100% of the time, the English is perfect! Yours included. And I do have to admit, the Inpulse 500 would be my pick of the bunch if not for the odd FX section, which is very important for a DJ like me. I wish Rekordbox would expand their horizons haha
Brilliant video! This does look like a great controller with good features but I can't justify upgrading from the DDJ 400 to this. I need to get the basics down first anyways 🤣
the lack of markers is annoying, but im pretty sure a simple paint job will fix that you can always draw the dots yourself, same goes for adding more lines to your tempo sliders and crossfaders anyways, great video as always
that's very true. i dont know why they decided to remove the markers, and im surprised that youre the only one who has addressed it as far as im aware of
The lack of connector strength with USB-C didn't came as surprise to me. I have noticed similar problems with audio interfaces that has gone USB-C. Loosing connectivity because of the rather weak friction of the connector. They could have prevented these sort of problems with USB-C cable and connector with a clamping mechanism. The FLX-4 should also work with Traktor Pro 3 using the FLX-6 MIDI mappings posted by Native Instrument. I tried the FLX-6 mapping file with my DDJ-400 and it works out of the box. After digging up the MIDI reference manuals for FLX-6, FLX-4 and DDJ-400. I found that PioneerDJ used mainly the same MIDI channels and messages for the related functions on all 3 devices, where the FLX-6 has additional functions for deck 3 & 4. As for the mixer area knobs. I would just recommend everyone to invest 20 bucks into getting some Chroma caps (or Coolercaps) to replace the standaard knobs (trim, EQ, filter, FX depth - 11 knobs total). The softer rubber touch of the Chroma caps makes playing for hours on these units much more pleasant, without those corner bites in your fingers. Using the fatty knobs also allow you easier to dial in more accurately, great for CFX filter, FX-1 depth and the trim knobs.
Right?? Fact is, nearly all controllers have proper clamps for their USB-B cables (the Mixtrack Platinum came loose when I pulled it during the filming of this video, none of the others did). And great advice on the knobs too!
recently bought a used DDJ-SB (1st gen). Using it with Mixxx it works well enough for me just to get some feeling for dj gear. I work in event tech and the company I work for also has CDJ-2000 nxs2's and 3000's. I sometimes have to be at the decks but very rarely. I am more of a backstage worker rather than a spotlight catcher.
I have a Denon MC7000 and a Pioneer DDJ-400. I use the ddj more because it's light and portable. But looking for something non beginner automatically means larger and heavier. It would be great to have a compact powerhouse controllers that fit in a magma bag, but I don't think companies are ready to think in that direction yet.
The EU has maked a law that new electonic units has to use a USB-C port, its not the problem of the design from pioneer. So you get to like it, because in the future will come more units and devices with USB-C port. And your problem with the knobs is easy to solve: you can change the knobs to another one with different colors, also there are stickers available with dots you can place on the surface. Shure, it would be better when there would be dots included, but in this price range you cant never get anything you want.
Actually, it IS a problem design of Pioneer's, as I have a bunch of other USB-C devices that hug your plug pretty tightly! My phone for one thing haha. They just need to work on tightening that port
I had my first show last night but I also had the issue that it suddenly stopped working 😭, it happened a couple of times. I wonder if you know why this happens 😭😭😭😭😭
2 more 🔥🔥🔥 ⚠ After Laptop / PC power is OFF (restart / shut down / hibernate). Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 automatically disconnects from Windows. Helping only reattaching USB cable. (Via USB-C (Type-C) to USB-A adapter or cable) ⚠ 3.5-mm stereo input works badly with TRRS jacks. Works normally only with TRS jacks.
Hey Carlo i would love to say that i dont like when someone comments flx as identical for beginner djs ! Iam a pro dj i own also a xdj rx3 but due to its size im mostly using flx 4 when im djing to several bars ! I want people to understand that models like 400 or flx can be used also from experienced and pro djs. Surely more expensive equipment can give you a better djing experience BUT if you have the mindset and the playlists and the experience those controllers can be used by professionals too!
That's fair Pedro! I call this a beginner controller as it's budget friendly, and has the basic features any controller should have. But, it's by no means limited to JUST being a beginner controller. Using it outside in bars and parties totally work too!
@@djcarlo hey Carlo one small help that I would massively appreciate do you know any certain way to have in ddj flx 4 a bar loop by pressing the in button? Like it used to be in the ddj 400 because I’m not a big fan of the exit/4 bear loop
As someone who's been using this thing as a primary unit for over a year now. The jog wheels do tend to slide across my hands when I try to scratch with them and while I'm not scratch nerd like Carlo, I do notice it sometimes and it is really bloody annoying. Other than that the delay on the performance pads is another real annoyance and the lack of XLR really sucks. Other than that it's a really good entry level deck and it's really damn good. Thank you Carlo for making me get this deck as it's carried my DJing for almost 2 years now lol. Thinking of upgrading soon so time to sift through the other reviews lol.
Glad ro know I'm not the only one who's noticed that quirk! I mean, I still enjoy how it looks but the coating is not the most practical in terms of use
@@djcarlo I also agree with the crossfader by the way, I have accidentally hit both the smart fader and beat fx buttons when trying to do some more intensive stuff with it
Ah, the REV1 of course. Purpose built for scratching on a budget! Plus, I think I mentioned this in the video, but the matte finish on the jogwheels is terrible for grip
Is the FLX-4 Lighting the same brightness as the DDJ-400? Or is one brighter than the other? (Talking about the Led lights) love your vids man, you put alot of effort into the showing everything in detail as possible.
Ohhhh, good question. I'd say the FLX is *slightly* dimmer in my eyes, but that also could be because it uses a duller, more yellow color. Red is more striking as on the 400
Great videos👍Well I'm still struggling with which one to choose among FLX4, RV1 or PLATINUM FX.However the smart fader doesn't appeal to me very much, and I've already installed searto dj pro😥
Thanks for the review. Still deciding if I should get into the hobby or keep practicing guitar & piano lol. I want to mix my favorite genre of music, Flamenco!
FLX4 did another strange thing... I was playing last track and unplugged my MacBook from power outlet the flx4 turned off also for a second and then back turned on after 9 seconds. With the ddj-400 you can safely disconnect MacBook power outlet while playing music and it would continue without turning off.
Oh WOW. That's really odd. That's something I've never experienced with ANY controller PlastiX. Thanks for sharing that! I'll see if it happens with me too
@@djcarlo Just request ~~ you should share more your knowledge because some of ppl want to learn more detail even can't attend the class like me. Thank you bro
No other controllers have buttons to access Smart Fader, and quite frankly, I have no idea how to activate it on any other Pioneer DJ gear. Haven't tried remapping yet, but that's essentially hacking into things already haha
Pioneer DDJ-REV1 is the BEST in this category. The REV1 is my go to workhorse Controller when I’m not bringing my RANE ONE out for more formal events like Weddings, Galas, etc. I wished it had RGB lights on the performance pads…
Hi DJ Carlo, I purchased the DDJ-FLX4 a few days ago and I like to use it with Virtualdj. I have the infinity subscription! Can you tell me which button on this controller can reset the original BPM of a track with a simple press on a button? Or can this only slide with the pitch control? I hope you are willing and able to answer my question. Thanks in advance and greetings from Amsterdam. Andre
Oof, I don't think there is a button for that! You may need to map a button to do that, but I'm completely unfamiliar with VDJ, so I can't really say what to do
sorry for my late respond! I found out there's no button. I must learn tot do it with the pitch faders. Thank you very much for your answer and wish you a lot off succes and thanks for the great video's we all can lean a lot. Greetings from Amsterdam.@@djcarlo
should I upgrade to the REV -6 as a beginner or wait until I gain some level? Also, I feel like Rekordbox works better than Serato Pro. What do you recommend?
i'm torn between the ddj400 and this, used to play at clubs and the ddj400 visually with dots, texture, color etc has better feels that resembles (in a mini version) what I used to play on. the serato/rekord box combo however is neat though. thoughts?:)
All my thoughts are in this video 😅 Given the last bit, it may depend on what software you use! Also, the 400 has been discontinued, so you may wanna factor that bit in
@@djcarlo hey Carlo my dear, I thought you’d be one of the first Dj‘s to get the Flx10 🥳 can’t wait to hear what you think about this amazing controller 😍 best regards and have a great week
While I still consider to buy the FLX-4, I don't like the USB-C ports just by its looks, it gives the product a less serious tone as it wants to gather a more casual audience who plans to use it woth a mobile device just like the DDJ-200
I am sill using the DDJ-400 I have them for few years bought price of 250$. I love It. Still enjoy them. Cannot believe on my eyes that they discontinued them for a few upgrades DDJ-Flx4 that had too much weakness. The CFX and a Smart fader are the only good upgrades they got. I Could literally patched it into my DDJ-400 that would work the same as the Flx4 using the software. The usb-b is much stronger than the usb-c while the usb-c is faster. I Believe Flx4 it is the okay DJ controller but not tight and grippy as an DDJ-400. Yes my dj controller are worth a lot now I kept them brand new Over years. Would you consider this a worth of Upgrade?
I would, but only in terms of the dedicated buttons for the Smart functions. The 400 is still my current GOAT for this category, but the FLX4 itself is a fairly worthy successor.
@@djcarloI Agree with you even though I own the 400 It is still a good Dj controller, This is still my current goat In this category too, matter of fact the flx4 is the worthy successor but faces problems. I would keep my 400 and not spend 300$ since Flx4 has little bit of upgrade. The 400 is still good by now. if the 400 started to have problems while it aged then I am going to upgrade the 400 but for now I still enjoy them.
the DDJ-FL4 is actually good on the functionality, it is portable and pretty light comparing to mine old DDJ-1000, the grip of the pads and knobs are suitable, the only problem is the connection of line, the visual guide is bad, i am highly depends on my earphone......
I still use Hercules 4-MX (bought in 2012) with Virtual DJ 7. I miss a lot sensitive pads (my controller has hard buttons), a better effect system and a modern dj software. I might sell it for 100 € (?) because it still works good and has a lot of inputs/outputs for its category; and buy Pioneer FLX-4. Do you think it's a smart move? :)
Please please do help me here.... 😊 Any help. Just starting now. Home learning then I want to try some gigs. Which one should be good..? Is stems going to be useful as I'm starting but I do like mixing EDM progressive rhythm and beats no lyrics usually. More like dope trance. Kinda music. I am sure 2 channel is ok right .? With mic 🎤 input max. Dj using windows laptop. What software you suggest I'm ok to buy life time licence if needed around 100$ or so . Or using free software please suggest the software and controller combo I shud take a look. I'm ok to spend 350$ to start with as buying something for 150 or so then again replace selling and buying new .. new learning curve rather I buy one time.. please suggest

I) Looks: I think the use of the same color is cost effective, but I would prefer another color, blue like flx6 or the old red in 400. I can live with that though. RGB is out of question because its for more expensive controllers.
II) Feel: Its ok, still I believe the 400 looked better, but its sleek and nice. You can upgrade it with 3rd party knobs etc. I will do it .
III) Connectivity: Now I can see that usb c is not good for secure connection, but for this entry level its fine, for home use or outdoor djing or streaming its ok, You can find quality cables and the addition of usb port for power if your laptop is not providing power (like a usb hub), its way better than a propriety power brick
IV) smart CFX and Smart Fader when you open them they use one of you effect slot in Rekordbox if you are using a DDJ-XP2 or you have mapped another midi, it disables it, CFX fx2 amd smartfader fx3.
a) smart CFX is a nice addition a bit limited but you can do many tricks.
b) smart fader is controversial because is making transitions easier, in a way that is not easy to do manually.
I use it only to my sliders, because adjusting the bpms from the one track to another. Because I dont use the crossfader to change tracks, I use sliders and filter knobs.
is it a cheat? yes but if its used properly is useful
helps new djs? yes it will make home party djing great experience
it can help also for changing short tracks or make nice short previews.
V) The microphone via USB is good addition
VI) Works with Serato without having a special edition.
Virtual Dj works with everything, and Serato has many options as well
Rekordbox has its own gear as well as Trakktor
Denon Engine is another beast, especially for standalone all in one setup. cheaper than XDJs
ps. You can map a midi controller like AKAI APC MINI realy easy. DDJ-XP2 is expensive.
I have mapped 16 pad effects and the buttons are staying on (I havent found a way to adjust the color of the pad though)
I have mapped the fx effects to the sliders. Now I am thinking what I should map to the rest pads. I have 16 free for each channel.
The APC 40MKII is a beast but the same price as the DDJ-XP2 so if you have it you can use it.
@DJ Carlo do you use platinum notes? Is it worth buying?
Hi
Lucky to have dry hands... any sweat leaves streaks on the plastic
After using the smart fader for the first time it feels like cheating. It works though and the crowd won't think you're a worse dj for using it.
@Zlorak you could always do that but you had to do it manually.
The problem is if that feature becomes an habit. It destroys completely the skill celling needed to upgrade to more professional equipment
Great upgrade! The FLX4 really IS one of the best beginner controllers out there
here to say i’m in the EXACT same position with the DDJ-200, using rekordbox is amazing for me but it’s just a lot of clicking and typing from my pc. this will certainly make me consider the FLX4 even more! thanks man
Same one here too😂 I bought it today and waiting for shipping💗
Thanks for the info I'm planning on getting some on payday
As a beginner dj, I found that the FLX4 was perfect for getting off the ground and getting comfortable with learning to dj and scratch. I know most people think of the smart crossfader as a gimmick, but I found it can come in very handy for learning how a perfectly mixed track sounds like. I don't use it all the time as it feels more rewarding to mix more hands on, but for difficult transitions, I'll use it to help give me a guideline on how to mix more smoothly, and that's been very helpful. Great video review :)
That's the right attitude to have about mixing Wayne! It really is more rewarding to be highly hands on with the mix
how do you activate smart mix? i have mine, using serato, but when i press the smart corssfader button the tracks don't go into the same tempo :(
i gave up since it's not something crucial but i'd like to know
@@TomasMaldonado93he literally said in the video that serato doesn’t work
@@TomasMaldonado93is it working already ?
I’m a resident dj and I’m loving my flx4. I dj for 5-6 hrs on a day and the smart fader is just saving me from memorising each transition for 250 songs.
At least you're putting it to good use Prodefe!
you mix in club with the flx4 ? it's ok ? .....
there is no reason for not to be ok, as long as the sound system is not that far away from the controller@@ChrisBessy
That’s the Pioneer DJ signature! Glad you love your FLX4! Funny how you can relate with the jog wheels 😅
Could you use Jog Wheel Sticker for Pioneer Controller
I’m loving my Flx4, had it for a month now and it’s perfect for a level entry controller. Will probably upgrade in a year or so. I did experience the shutting down issue in the first week, but it’s been ok since then. I did experience the issue you mentioned with Searto and not all features working, so I stuck with rekordbox, which is fine. Keep you the good work and videos 👍🏻
Glad the initial issues didn't repeat themselves Daza! Enjoy the FLX4!
Will be getting this for my birthday next week :) Long-time raver here but absolutely new to dj´ing and im so stoked to learn!
You got this man! Good luck with your DJ journey!
You got this! I was a long time raver and started DJing recently at 41 years old :)
I feel like that every time pioneer releases something, it's always a step before perfection
It’s so they can sell the next product and gatekeeper all the features behind the cdj3000
Good point about the USB-C cable . I'll probably glue a cable grip/clip onto the FLX4 to keep the cable secure.
On this point, I wish they found a way to make the unit "hug" the port a bit tighter! The USB B came off when I tried the same test with the Mixtrack Platinum, so it's really a matter of port engineering I'd say
Thank you for being so honest when it comes to reviewing products.
I try to be Karel! I don't want people to get too blindsided with the actual product. I had high hopes for the FLX4!
I'm glad it worked out well for you Carlos! Make the best of the FLX4!
@@djcarlo most definitely! Loving your videos and learning a lot from them :)
I just have to say Carlo thank you. Your videos have helped me grow as a DJ and because thx to your videos I landed a gig in Austria
That's awesome bro! Kill it out there in Austria!!
Of course SIKe! I remember your comments hahaha. That's awesome yo! But don't forget, 90% of that hard work was all you!
@@djcarlo Thanks Carlo, Appreciate it!
@@prod.sike.mp3 thanks a lot mate, i’ll make sure to practice every two days for a few hours
11:38 Do you also need numbers on an analogue watch?
Cheers man!
@@daza7560 Definitely need to organize my library better tho hahahah. Been getting so many songs and forgot about organizing them after a little while

Thanks man! I really work hard to provide the silliest and smoothest and nicest b roll! L😅😂🎉
@@djcarlo @vvsvlogs The "WOWW > Hand moisturizer" is my favorite :D
Bro those sections where you act out exaggerated faces like where you were struggling to scratch and where you were looking at the trim knobs or discovering the smart fader were downright hilarious! Meant to tell you that on previous videos too but either way love those parts 🤣
Bwahahaha, you'll see more of that in future videos!
Oh, I never noticed the low audio! Thanks for the tips on remapping too!
Is sold my flx4, bought a rx3 and a ddj-800. I just bought a new flx4…I love the mobility and does all the basics and still fun.
I love how you came back to it haha. It's unbeatable in terms of basic fun!
@ I really wish they made a smaller version. I’m literally at the airport with my flx4 now. It’s so small airlines assume its a large laptop. Hahhaa
Got a hercules 500 in white with a omni turntable on deck 3. Fun times :) Build quality of the hercules rocks.
Their value proposition is insane compared to other controllers in this price range! Glad you got it’😮😊
I think that the "Smart Fader" is the FLX4's equivalent of the FLX6's "Merge FX" in the sense that they are gimmicks that simplify aspects of DJing. I am saying this as someone who still has a ways to go before being an intermediate DJ.
That's a pretty interesting observation Oscill8! Though I can imagine the Smart Fader getting way more attention than Merge FX
Yeah merge fx is ass, same with jog cutter. I'm currently mapping these on my flx6. Ive got a ddj sp1 on a stand to control all the fx
You can use a usb c cable with a 90° plug. The torque from the elbow will hold it in place under any tension (too much and it will tear off the port)
Ohhh, haven't given that a shot! Great tip Jay!
(I don't specifically endorse Apple's cables, it just happened to be what was given to me at work.)
Note that it can also be controller's port too!
I get you there Orwell! They feel very different. Really wish the FLX4 had paddle FX though
@@OrwellHD thanks dude. Will see if i am updated and try connecting like u said.
re usb-c: if you use velcro cabel-ties you can glue a short strip to the case and secure sketchy connections that way.
also the 90° angled plugs don't pull out as easy as the straight ones.
I just with the cable that came with the FLX4 was like that! Would've saved a lot of headaches
It's great for an entry-level controller, but given that you've gone on to the 800, I feel like you may need a higher-tier backup controller haha
@@djcarlo I agree. I plan on getting the DDJ 1000 and keeping my DDJ 800 as backup.
It's the best entry level controller out there for the time being, so great choice!
I'm gonna buy this unit. Im going to retire my two pioneer sl 1200 that I've been using since 1997.they still work fine, but I need to start learning this new technology.
The 1200s are still awesome, but believe me, the convenience of new tech is a miracle in itself
I've had it a solid month and i like it. I'm a beginner and i play to use it for latin music. A lot of features i don't know how to use properly. Devices like this should come with solid tutorials for all the features.i figured I'll learn more watching RUclips videos and pros using it.
I'm glad you're enjoying the FLX4 Fausto! If it works well for you, then that's great!
I'm glad you're making the most of the 200 yo! But yeah, it's severely lacking if you're trying to look for features beyond basic mixing
I have bought the flx 4 and it is arriving today! This is the upgrade from my party mix witch started to stop working properly and I can wait to receive my controller
You’re gonna love the FLX4! That thing kicks your other controllers butt!
Where did you get it from? Everywhere I look it’s sold out
I put it on backorder at store DJ a few weeks ago and it came 1 week ago but I was away
Cool video! Do you think the flx6 will get Rekordbox mobile support?
Possibly with the GT! But nothing 100% confirmed yet I believe
Crazy that they dont use locking usb ports. Arcade fight sticks have been doing this for years. Could the port be swapped out?
Right? I guess it’s the nature of the C port; it’s just not as tight as the B port
I’m 61 I always thought this looked interesting. Maybe I should give this a go.
Go for it! It's never too late to learn a new skill
Brilliant video! This does look like a great controller with good features but I can't justify upgrading from the DDJ 400 to this. I need to get the basics down first anyways 🤣
In all fairness, this was meant to replace the DDJ 400, so it's a parallel!
@@djcarlo Fair point. If I was getting a controller now, I'd definitely go for this, although the Inpulse 500 looks pretty sweet too
I'm so glad i bought a DDJ 400 before it got discontinued 🙌
I hope you got it at retail! Those things are EXPENSIVE now!
the lack of markers is annoying, but im pretty sure a simple paint job will fix that
you can always draw the dots yourself, same goes for adding more lines to your tempo sliders and crossfaders
anyways, great video as always
Thing is, you shouldn't need to!
that's very true. i dont know why they decided to remove the markers, and im surprised that youre the only one who has addressed it as far as im aware of
The one bad thing about the flx4 is the jog wheels, but you can just put stick on coating for more grip
Yeah, its my biggest complaint! My sweaty fingers don't grip the matte surface well
The lack of connector strength with USB-C didn't came as surprise to me.
The SB is still pretty great for home use and getting a feel of things!
I've got a DDJ SB2 and i'm still good with that. To me, still the best entry level.
It's one of the most enduring, ill have to say! Quite some build quality there
@@djcarlo Yep!
If Rekordbox comes out with stem separation, then DDJ-400 may be the better buy, since you get a full license for Rekordbox with your purchase.
That's true! But when that'll happen is anyone's guess Aahan!
Which one is better for beginner to buy is pioneer DDJ-400 or DDJ-FLX4?
Now, it's the FLX4, since the 400 was discontinued right after this video came out
I have a Denon MC7000 and a Pioneer DDJ-400. I use the ddj more because it's light and portable. But looking for something non beginner automatically means larger and heavier. It would be great to have a compact powerhouse controllers that fit in a magma bag, but I don't think companies are ready to think in that direction yet.
The 800 and Prime Go are great candidates! They’re tiny and have all the ports you could
Need’🎉
Yeah I have made the swap from 400 to FLX4, but unsatisfied too. 400 was all perfect.
Right? The FLX4 could've been all, but they've hit a number of hiccups
I had my first show last night but I also had the issue that it suddenly stopped working 😭, it happened a couple of times. I wonder if you know why this happens 😭😭😭😭😭
Oh man! I swear, it might be the loose cable. Were they secure?

Carlo, is the FLX4 better than Pioneer RB. Your thoughts please. 🎉
For now, I'd say so. Theres a lot of newer technology in the FLX4 compared to the RB
Thanks Carlo, will upgrade.

Great review as usual! Between this Flx4 and the REV1 .. Which would you say ie tighter for scratching?
In that case, it might be the Platinum for you
Thanks for the review. Still deciding if I should get into the hobby or keep practicing guitar & piano lol. I want to mix my favorite genre of music, Flamenco!
I'd say its worth going for an inexpensive controller, just to have some fun! Having a musical background will help fast track your DJing career!
@@djcarlo sounds like a sounds idea. Enjoying the channel & videos, thanks a lot!
If i buy the FLX4 do i get the complete recordbox software for free? im confused im trying to start djing but don’t want to spend money on software
It should unlock Rekordbox from the get go!
I'll see if it happens with me too
Great video, thanks 0:59 best funny part 😁
Hahah that was so unscripted 😅
great material as usual greetings from Poland 🤝
Thanks Rafał! Glad you enjoyed the review! What're your thoughts on the FLX4?
@@djcarlo for me it's the little brother of flx 6 i have ddj 400
been waiting for this vid and now its out cant wait to watch it
Waited a while for my unit too, and jumped on the video the moment I unboxed it! Hope you enjoyed the video Shxdow!
I just downloading your all of DJ relate video and its really great and appreciated your sharing. I just learning from you. Thank you
Make good use of them Zinkoko! Let your friends know about the tutorials too! :D
@@djcarlo Just request ~~ you should share more your knowledge because some of ppl want to learn more detail even can't attend the class like me. Thank you bro
Not the lotion at 6:35 though!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Always the lotions! Bwahahaha
Im deciding between Hercules Inpulse 500 vs DDJ FLX4. Which one should I get as my first controller?
If you need professional outputs, then go for the 500. Otherwise, the FLX4 works as it has a better layout
Why is the smart fader related to the hardware if it's all done software side... Can't you just configure your own decks buttons to the the same?
No other controllers have buttons to access Smart Fader, and quite frankly, I have no idea how to activate it on any other Pioneer DJ gear. Haven't tried remapping yet, but that's essentially hacking into things already haha
@@djcarlo but correct me if I'm wrong it only software related... So basically anyone can use the mapping to the get the same outcome
Nooooooooooooo
Man I love your reviews your little skits get me every time
More skits in the future Garbar! My proto-RUclips videos were all skits, so I thought I'd just bring them back!
Pioneer DDJ-REV1 is the BEST in this category. The REV1 is my go to workhorse Controller when I’m not bringing my RANE ONE out for more formal events like Weddings, Galas, etc.
I wished it had RGB lights on the performance pads…
Same here Jones. I wish it had RGB, but that's a rarity in the sub $300 category
Greetings from Amsterdam.@@djcarlo
lol!!!! the lotion aplying part... everytime.... makes me crack up xd
The best Easter egg in every video!
@@djcarlo makes me crack XD
@@djcarlo ty for the content. It's good!
Re: jog-wheels, couldn’t you apply some kind of grip tape or paint-on rubberizing?
Yeah, but the point is, you shouldn't really need to!
AMIGO can you make a video about the Roland 707m ?
Thanks , you are amazing 😄
Oof, lo siento amigo! No tienes ese controller, so I can't make a video or review on it.
Thank you for this!!!!! I loved your transition to promoting the DJ pools...transition (pun).
Smart CFX and Fader can only go so far. The best way to dj is to use DJ friendly tracks!🎉
should I upgrade to the REV -6 as a beginner or wait until I gain some level?
Also, I feel like Rekordbox works better than Serato Pro. What do you recommend?
The FLX6 would be okay for a beginner! Anything sub 1k should be good!
i'm torn between the ddj400 and this, used to play at clubs and the ddj400 visually with dots, texture, color etc has better feels that resembles (in a mini version) what I used to play on. the serato/rekord box combo however is neat though. thoughts?:)
All my thoughts are in this video 😅
Given the last bit, it may depend on what software you use! Also, the 400 has been discontinued, so you may wanna factor that bit in
Although it's been discontinued they are still selling. I'm also torn between which console is better.
I had the same issue over and over again with the FLX6 ....grrr but changed to FLX10 now and can't wait to have it really in front of me
Wait for the FLX10 to come out! I'm still waiting for my review unit to arrive!
@@djcarlo hey Carlo my dear, I thought you’d be one of the first Dj‘s to get the Flx10 🥳 can’t wait to hear what you think about this amazing controller 😍 best regards and have a great week
Artist of song or link? 7:41
It's a song called "I Left You" I believe. It should be on the Shazam or SoundHound database
While I still consider to buy the FLX-4, I don't like the USB-C ports just by its looks, it gives the product a less serious tone as it wants to gather a more casual audience who plans to use it woth a mobile device just like the DDJ-200
Nice review, but if YOU have to choose DDJ-FLX4 vs DDJ-REV1 what would you choose?
Hmmmm, a bit of a conundrum as they don't really cater to the same needs.
For a beginner DJ using DJay Pro do your recommend Reloop buddy or FLX4? Thanks in advanced love the channel
For Djay Pro, the Reloop Buddy might be a better fit
@@djcarlo appreciate the insight man! Love the content, one of the best creators around
I got the Pioneer DDJ-SR. Is this an upgrade or should I stick with the DDJ-SR?
Oh, the SR is a higher tier than this. However, it's also now on the older side, so I'd recommend looking at the FLX10 for an upgrade
We have pretty much the same issues then! They need to fix a few things I'd say
I cant seem to make a decision between flx4, impulse 500 & mixtrack platinum fx
Get the FLX4!
Hi would u rather Go for the DJ 400 250 Euro (used) or the Mixars Primo (260 Euro +Serato DJ pro includedd)
I've never tried the Mixars Primo, so I can't give a fair comparison 😞
Sir do you know any way - how to do a quality & performance check while buying a 2nd hand controllers, for people buying their first controller.
Hmmm no idea. Just do extensive testing? Good luck!
Sounds like a good plan! No telling how much longer the 4-MX will be supported, so it's best to future proof yourself too 😊
Please please do help me here....
2 channel with a mic is good!
@@djcarlo are u seriously this duh...lol i asked you which software and which controller is better... Not 2 channel with mic. Omg 😳 I'm surprised ur a youtuber n a dj heheheh
Great video! I have a ddj flx4 myself and haven’t used it much because I’m still trying to figure out which record pulls to use and still learning the whole rekordbox system
Check out Crate Connect! That’s what I use! Use the coupon code: DJCARLO for a discount!
@@djcarlo i tried out crate connect recently. I found it too time consuming to download music like 20 manually selected tracks at a time. I also found the library of latin music was too limited. Considering buy a music hard drive or getting stuff from friends to save time and have a solid library to start. Wish spotify worked with rekordbox. Right now I'm using Tidal for music. The interface isn't the best on tidal.
Hi, Im not even new to DJ and devices, but im planning to get one, i have a question and will be happy if you can help.
I would like to get a flx4 and i was thinking to keep it, my question would be, can i connect it to bigger sound systems using a DI box in between?
Thank you
It can! Though if you're looking at playing bigger venues, I'd recommend getting something with XLR or PL outputs
@@djcarlo Thank you for the reply. can you please name me some controller with those mentioned ports which is also affordable?
Your reply will be highly appreciated.
ive used traktor with timecode vinyl in 2011-ish and that was nice, tho a lil bit of latency was THERE, not too much to affect but just enuff to annoy me sometimes. what is your opinion - what is the best SCRATCHING dj controller qround or cheaper than 300 usd?
There's only one that's sub $300, and it's the REV1. None of the sub $300 controllers have the kind of jogwheels that emulate full platters though
@@djcarlo thank you for advice and info, man!
Well in my opinion idol ddj 400 is still a better choice as a beginner controller...have been using for 3 years and still no problem..
It's pretty solid. I'm not too sold on the FLX4, but it does come with some great exclusive features
Hey DJ Carlo! Your review is super helpful for me as I am researching before buying my first controller. I am stuck between the FLX4 and the Impulse 500. The quality of the Impulse 500 definitely has my attention, but I just want to make sure I am making the right choice before I go for it!
Its FX section is a bit wonky for me, but honestly, I'd highly recommend it! The PL output, RGB lights, and legs really bring an extra air of quality to it!
I just bought the unit............Just today 😩
I guess I'll have to use it more carefully 😁 thanks
You’ll have a great time! The flx4 is awesome!
