- The Temptations are an American vocal group known for their success in the 60s and 70s at Motown Records. The group's repertoire has included, during its five-decade career, R&B, doo-wop, funk, disco, soul. "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is a song performed by Motown recording act the Undisputed Truth. It was written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1971, and released as a single in May 1972. It peaked at number 63 on the Pop Charts and number 24 on the R&B Charts. The song was included on the Undisputed Truth's album Law of the Land (1973). Later that year, Whitfield, who also produced the song, took "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and remade it as a 12-minute record for the Temptations, which was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammy Awards in 1973.
A rolling stone refers to someone who likes to move often or is unwilling to settle down in one place. The phrase is based on the old saying, "a rolling stone gathers no moss," which kind of means "no strings attached" and no responsibilities. - Кино
An amazing production.... every beat resonates through you, and the story can tear your heart out.... defines the word "Classic".....
This song has always struck a nerve with me because my father passed away September 3, 1965. After that my mom had mental issues and turned to drugs and alcohol. She abandoned me November 25, 1968.
I never would see her again.
Wow sorry to hear that
wow Robert what a sad youth you had...sorry to read what you wrote! hope you are doing good now!!!
I'm so sorry for your hardship and loss. 💗
1972: memories are awakened. I heard this song one night on the highway during a long drive through Texas.
Night on the highway is best time to listen to music, certainly the long pieces with eternal solo's! A few solid Italian expresso's to stay awake and the night is yours. ❤️❤️
Me too: It was about 5 in the morning in January driving between Calgary and Medicine Hat -- no traffic, pitch dark and well below zero. I'm taken back there immediately when I hear this -- good times.
I was 10 yrs old when this song came out. I loved music. I loved Motown and soul. After all these yrs, I’m listening to it and I’m having some weird memories behind it. I never knew my dad. I was told he died. I found out later he never died and he lived close by. He was a musician. Even played w some old famous country artist. He was not really so bad as my mama’s cousin told me when I found out and asked questions. I found him in 2007. He was a trip but not a bad man. Wow. This song is stirring up some emotions. Just wow!
awe 😢😢😢😢😢
PWARS is one of the best made beats & lyrics in R&B history
❤❤
FACTSSSSS 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
השיר הזה כל כך טוב שהוא רק משתבח עם הזמן והמון זמרים עשו חידושים גורג מייקל פיל קולינס ועוד אבל אף אחד לא הצליח להגיע לרמה של להקת הפיתויים
When I was a kid I always thought of it as,"All he left us was a LOAN". Either way it was all in the same. 🤔
Me too lol
That makes more sense than the admittedly clever, but slightly out of context "all he left us was alone"
Makes sense since he was a deadbeat
I too thought the same 😊
I think it makes a greater sense by saying all he left was a LOAN.
I also think that wherever he laid his head was his home.
Fantastic song , beautiful. Has not become old
I was tempted by the Temptations in the mid 70s in Kumasi, Ghana 5 time zones from your base and I still love it at age 66.

1970s we watched Don Cornelius on "Soul Train" on Saturday mornings. We loved the Jackson 5, Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Tower of Power, Billy Preston. I am white. Relations with blacks were good. Fast forward to Michelle Obama and the hatred for whites and the revisionist history saying blacks can never be accepted or get ahead. Don't believe it. Everybody got along in the 1970s and we all "danced to the music" of Sly Stone. We all roller skated together. We all watched "the Jeffersons" and "Good Times" and laughed together. Today's leftist identity politics is trying to divide everyone and say that our past was nothing but racism. It's a lie.
שימו לב איך השיר הזה נוגע בכול אחד מאיתנו בסיפור אישי כזה או אחר איפה קיימים שירים כאלה היום
Papa was a rolinho Stones...lembra Solano...Mestre Domingos cadê seu chapéu...o meu chapéu tá no alto do Céu...

The Temptations made a big mistake getting rid of Norman Whitfield. This song is bad ass.

My daughter was 12 when I left, it's in the blood.
Nothing to be proud of...
@@adenasmith903 I hope you have very good reason to leave your child.. Find her and explain her the reason..
WHO are We BTW...?
Bruh all the kids at school was talking mad sht about they dad. 😂😂😂 That's foul
.minor error in text ..all he left us was a lone (money he owed to someone) not ...all he left us was alone
Maybe, but since he was a 'rolling stone' he could not get or have a loan. This a wordplay on a loan the sound of both words being the same.
Whats this style called
1:50, just skip it, let's be honest
