Great advice again! Like sports it often comes back to basics. I do all this and more (scales/arrpegios/guide tones) both pizz and arco , well before I play any songs. My teacher has me use the metronome at 60bpm because I can hear it in whole/half/quarter/eights. And I focus my ear on hearing the 2nd and 4th note as a swing feel. And then the song work begins.....
Spaced out a bit while listening, heard the segment @ 17:05, "that's Christian," and then thought, "wow, first time hearing that colloquialism. Jazzmen really are hip."
😂 the big dawgs are well remembered (Christian McBride is thankfully still alive)…but yes, Mingus, Miles, Coltrane, Bird, Monk, Ray Brown, all the innovators, when someone utilizes one of their innovations we identify it as such.
While I appreciate your guidance in position - please do not dismiss half- 1st- 2nd position. This is the traditional - and standard training on upright bass positions.
Great lesson Bob. It's nice to see how what starts like a very basic and technical exercise can be morphed into something very musical and creative.
Thanks Patrick! -Bob

That chromatic exercise on one string is a Rufus Reid exercise that appears on his book The Evolving Bassist part two, great exercise!
Great! Thanks Bob

That’s awesome. The most important scale is every single note. haha. Makes sense though
Yes indeed! Got to know those notes before you can take them away
Darn, i missed it.
Are you a Rabbath guy ? Oh boy...
