When Republicans and Democrats say they think a president was unfairly elected, most are referring to much more than what polls express. Media interference in the form of cover-up, voting law changes, practices such as ballot harvesting viewed as illegitimate despite it being made legal, purposeful lack of transparency, and more are typically contributions in their definition(s).
Also, yes Destiny. Democrats have done repeated lawsuits, made blatant false accusations rousing up their base, demanded that electors become unfaithful and change their electoral vote to Hillary, attempted to delay congressional certification of the election in the name of trying to force more last minute recounts and investigations, actually excused their base for rioting against and sieging government buildings like the courthouse in Portland, police precincts elsewhere, etc, called for the suspension of “the constitution,” the law, and so on.
The differences with the Democrats in my view is that they occasionally question elections to varies degrees each time they lose, and then just drop it before the next election. I know besides the Russian Collusion and Puppet hoaxes, Democrats also tended to be excellent at having short-term memories in terms of what they were loudly claiming during a previous election season or political fight. The difference with Republicans last election was they did it as well for once and they didn’t let it go. Now the Democrats won’t either.

Yeah, I think you're right Kyle wasn't willing to recommend anything in swing states. Now I think his message is better, but it is still giving more legitimacy to a political project that is going to recommend swing state voters throw away their vote and help the worst option. Until there are things like ranked choice voting (through ballot initiatives preferably) that give people the ability to not spoil elections, I don't think it makes sense to vote for a 3rd party particularly at the national level. I might still do it because I'm in a "safe" state, but it just seems like the potential benefits do not outweigh the negatives.

If you can't understand the difference between these comparisons then you shouldn't be involved in political discourse in the first place, it's best left to those of us with critical thinking skills. The difference between Biden vs Bernie campaign promises are enormous - what Bernie advocated for were policies that would have been a radical shift in American politics even from the liberal perspective whereas most of what Biden promised were policies that were much more achievable. Obviously people have a higher expectation for Biden to deliver on his promises given that they weren't as ambitious or difficult to achieve.

It doesn't really help 3rd parties on its own. These parties would still not get enough support to win elections for the most part. What it does is get rid of this dumb lesser of two evils talking point. To help 3rd parties gain more influence you would also need some form of proportional representation. I suspect that people like Briahna actually don't want RCV because with the current system they feel they have more power to threaten the political process by spoiling elections. She talks out of both sides of her mouth when she says she can't be held accountable for the consequences of her vote (it's always the Democrats fault for not trying hard enough) but at the same time she acknowledges her vote is risky. If you know the consequences of your actions, then obviously other people can be angry at you for still encouraging people, even in swing states, to vote like you do.

The executive branch will go to the biggest party, even if it's below 50% of the total population (as it is even now, it's essentially always some 4x% vs 4x% split). if people were able to support their preferred 3rd party candidate, without essentially just weakening their 'preferred' main 2 party candidate, you don't have to 'game the system' to figure out if you can vote like you want, or tactically for R or D. If you see R or D win, but that the 3rd party candidate got 2 districts in the first round, or it increases over time, that's a pull-factor on the bigger parties to get influenced by the growing 3rd party, even if they don't have a controlling vote in congress or win the presidency

Interesting discussion. I can understand the argument from left wing progressives on why you should support Biden vs Trump. For me, as someone that leans conservative. (Socially liberal, fiscally conservative but refuse to go with LP because they shoot themselves in the foot and virtue signal each other every chance they get ) I don't see much of a qualitative difference between the 2 major parties. I'd rank the candidates they've given us as a 1 vs 1.5 on 10 points scales. If there was a 1 vs 6 or something, I'd say vote for the better candidate. 1 vs 1.5 doesn't make an ounce of difference and I think 3rd party votes are more significant at that point.
I don't think any real change will happen until we get rid of current party leadership. Changing parties seems like the easiest way to do that. And in the whole debate, I don't care about convincing Dems or Reps to vote 3rd party. I'm pushing for the 45% the voluntarily choose not to participate - if they would participate and actually vote differently....it would instantaneously change the landscape. If they just split between Green and LP, we'd essentially have a 4 way tie and parties would be forced to address the issues that are important to voters. That's my biggest thing.

The president should be pushing his key campaign things, but ultimately it's the legislatures job to pass these things. Blaming a president for not achieving all of their goals shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the roles of government branches and basic US government ...

Destiny really made a strawman out of the standard arguement in favor of voting third party. The "lesser of two evils" isn't some weird way of expressing a that the preferred candidate is simply not ideal. It's an expression that means, in the context of presidential elections, that the preferred candidate is still so far detached from ideal that the individual saying the expression clearly feels that candidate does not represent what they'd like to vote for. It's uncharacteristically bad faith of you to assume that these people are a) being too picky AND b) are necessarily upper class or otherwise have no skin in the game. I feel like this, and many of your takes concerning popular populist talking points, demonstrate how little you actually interact with the average person.
People don't like having their sense of choice stripped away from them. The reason why the last two democratic primaries were so controversial is because in 2016, the popular vote was directly ignored (at least according to wikileaks) and in 2020 Biden won the primaries due to the extreme pressure the party placed on all other candidates to drop out and support Biden; mind you, in perhaps the easiest win for democrats that could have ever been expected. Personally speaking, the ONLY people I know that actually wanted Biden as president were a handful of boomers who thought Obama was pretty cool.
Obviously, it's okay to vote pragmatically for any election. Voting against politics you aren't in favor of is a completely valid way to engage in politics. However, pretending like people who refuse to accept a META that strictly favors voting against the candidate you don't like are somehow immoral, uninvested, irresponsible, or stupid is plainly ludicrous. It's a principled choice that demonstrates that such people are willing to sacrifice immediate optimization to display their disdain throught the most important method of politcal voice Americans have in hopes that such a decision may illicit change in the future. After all, if enough people vote against either party it may invite a change aimed at acquiring their votes. Something that, in any other discussion, Destiny would tout as proof just how important a vote is.
Ultimately, this all goes to show that in fact the single vote system we employ is insufficient in insuring the value of voting. If the options presented at every election was candidate X or 50 years in prison, we would never look at that system and say "ah yes, it's the voter's fault they were placed in prison when they clearly had a choice". In this way, it's apparent that there is need for a change that allows people to freely vote for their preferred candidate without the threat of indirectly electing a candidate that is the antithesis of their values.

These people all live in a bubble where student debt relief is very popular. But that is not the case with the general population and even less with key demographics that Biden is under performing with but absolutely needs if he wants to win reelection - blue collar workers and especially minority blue collar workers. I don't believe the electoral gains outweigh the losses. The people to whom this matters the most are typically liberal arts graduates who are one of the most left leaning and politically active subclass of young people. They already vote and they vote left. There are no millions of sociology majors staying home on election day. In fact they are the ones knocking on doors doing the foot work to get the vote out for Democrats. College educated young people that don' care about politics are usually busy working their ass off to get a career going. They have no trouble paying off their student loans and may even be annoyed with the fact that they had to bust their asses to get a sensible degree, get a good job and now the government steps in and rewards the ones that didn't. Anyway this won't particularly fire them up one way or another. On the other hand it will be seen as a downright insult by the blue collar working class who already feels left behind by the Democrats who are increasingly captured by the professional managerial class. Good luck getting the black vote out when you just handed out half a trillion dollars to mostly white, middle class jerk offs who already live a privileged life by comparison.

Take NJ for example. In the last two elections you could take all of the 3rd party votes, multiply them by 3, give them to the republican candidate, and they _still_ lose that state.

    • @razzmaster02
      @razzmaster02 Год назад

pragmatically, the only reason I can see not voting for a "lesser evil" is because you're so insulated from the consequences of doing so that you don't need to care anymore - none of the potentially drastic life changes that affect people (those ostensibly on "your side" like minorities, people who support climate action, etc.) will impact you, which also why I believe is why I saw a bunch of "radical leftist" meme accounts in 2020, who almost always turned out to be teenagers or college students who lived in NYC, saying "voting sucks".
Yeah, maybe voting sucks for you because it doesn't give you what you want, but for the people voting for abortion rights, whose voting determines whether LGBT people are getting legal rights or are going to have to fear for their lives, who vote to determine whether their poor neighbors get gov assistance, it sure does matter. To me, it's basically telling on yourself that you're willing to make the world a whole lot worse in return for even a snowball's chance in hell that your chosen ideology gets to come out on top, even as you're insulated very well compared to others from the consequences that follow.
The whole thing strikes me as so myopic as to be ridiculous, and against the basic principle of socialism which is to be a humanistic political and economic philosophy.
