We cruised out of Galveston in December and loved it. The prices were unbeatable and the hotel let us leave our car at the hotel for our cruise free of charge which really saved us on the parking fees at port. The people were also all friendly!Definitely would cruise out of there again!

I am happy that you are enjoying your time on Galveston Island! My wife and I were fortunate to stay there in November and fortunate that my brother-in-law owns a house about 4 miles from where you are staying. We plan on going back many times, in the future. For your next stay in Galveston, I would recommend Moody Gardens, walking The Strand (near the cruise port), ride the Galveston Ferry, my wife and I had a blast at the Galveston's Own Farmers Market and I highly recommend taking a tour of one of the old homes in the area. We did a tour of the Moody Mansion and it was amazing. One of the best things that we would do, every day, was walk the area and see the beautiful homes and the beaches.

Thank you Don for you kind words about my hometown. Many people are negative about the brown water which is a product of all the rivers which empty into the gulf nearby but there is so much more to do in Galveston than just swimming in the water. You need to visit the Strand and drive through the Victorian East End district.

We're going to spend a couple of days there before hand - now I'm really looking forward to it!! Thanks for the mini review!! We will be there at the beginning of high season, so our ocean view rooms are a bit more costly than yours was (we're staying at that Holiday Inn!!), but moderate and it looks like it's well worth the price!!!

Exactly. I live in Texas and as cruise port Galveston is a great port. However, at this point the only things offered from Galveston are the Western Caribbean ports which aren’t great. Perhaps as more ships come out of Galveston they’ll consider offering cruises to the Southern Caribbean. The cruise companies are building more private islands etc since they realize that most stops in Mexico just aren’t safe or desirable.

We live in a Houston suburb about 90 minutes from Galveston. Lots of great restaurants, museums and historical sights. We often spend several nights in Galveston preferring the San Luis Resort fronting the beach or the Tremont Hotel which is downtown. I understand that with the expansion of the port, Galveston will become the 4th largest cruise port in the U.S. We have about 20 cruises under our belts but just one out of Galveston. The Western Caribbean is not our favorite destination, but a transitioning cruise from Galveston to Florida would be a good cruise for us out of Galveston. Hopefully, we will see a bigger selection of cruise ships with the port expansion. Summers can be brutally hot!

Lucky enough it is 2 blocks from beach and plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Love Galveston plenty to see and do always stay a couple of days extra. It’s not crowded now, but it will be for Mardi Gras celebrations in a couple of weeks. Overall, Galveston is a great place to visit for a day trip and extended stays.
The Seawall was built after the hurricane in 1900 that flooded the island and killed an estimated 6,000 - 12,000 people (depending on source you use); considered the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Hence the abundance of ghost tours. I’ve taken a couple of them and it’s fascinating hearing the history they provide in these tours.

My sister and I drove to Galveston from San Antonio for a cruise in 2018. We stayed at a hotel further west for under $100.00 a night. It was very basic but It included a basic breakfast. It was across the road from the beach. It was also near Moody Gardens. We drove to the state park. The beach was wilder but very interesting. One night, we went to Golden Corral (buffet restaurant). It was the best one I've ever been to. It was slightly more expensive than others I have been to. But the added items available were worth it.
