      If Lonzo has such a high basketball IQ why does his offense shut down if the 3 isn't falling? Dude is avg 1 FT every 10-12 games and is more likely to pop single digit scoring than he is to crack 20 I meean he has some parts of his game solid but one reason he in a 3/D role is dude can't figure out his own offensive issues

      @I.am_Groot 2 года назад +1

      @@bulletprovider6956 That is one issue. Driving inside with a purpose is another. Defenders know he isn't going to challenge them at the rim and he never gets to the FT line. He also needs to develop the ability to hold the ball in the half court and be a leader. He is only 1/2 a PG and nothing wrong with being a transition guy but again he won't go inside strong and pressure the D to stop him to really he is playing himself into a SG role which is cool but not what the Bulls need from him

    • @DontWannaBe
      @DontWannaBe 2 года назад +8

      @@I.am_Groot So many times I've seen lonzo drive and he kicks it out to the open player (especially early in the season), which is usually Derozen because defense sags off on him because they know he's a non shooter from 3, and almost every single time Derozen will either drive afterwards, or take the open 3 and miss. To play the way you want him to play he actually needs shooters and people who are willing to take and make the open shot. Right now he doesn't have spot-up shooters unless you count Vuc who has been missing a lot and Zach which is also more of an iso player. He has iso players who want the ball in their hand to get their shots. Lonzo driving and passing to an open Derozen on the 3 point line doesn't help create what you want to create. I've seen him now drive less and less because of this, what's the point of driving to create an open look for somebody if they aren't even going to take and make the shot? The reason melo is able to do it so much is because 1. he actually has shooters on his team, and 2. his teamates are actually making the 3s, Hornets are the best 3pt shooting team in the league, if you don't count Lonzo's 3pt shooting the bulls are absolutely terrible at 3s. You're supposed to run your offense in a way that gets you the highest percentage chance to get points, and Lonzo driving just to kick it to an open Derozen on the perimeter aint it chief.

    This is exactly why some teams don’t need a bunch of great stat getting “stars,” they just need a couple great defensive players who are serviceable offensively. For example, Westbrook is a far bigger star than either Caruso or Ball, and he stuffs the stat sheet far more, but he wouldn’t be what the Bulls needed. They didn’t need a guy dominating the ball running pick and rolls or Iso drive and kick all game with only him having the opportunity to get points and assists, and they didn’t need all his Uncontested defensive rebounds. They needed Caruso and Ball and what they bring far more.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 2 года назад +4

      Getting talent is always the hard part with building an NBA team. Figuring out how they will work together is the next test but is an easier task because if one part of the talent doesn't work, you can always trade them (given their value) for a piece that could actually work if they are available. Guys like Westbrook come with their price tag but also more finicky about how they can be utilized. Whereas the Bulls have enough of an offensive gameplan through LaVine and Vuc but gave up points every night cuz nobody else could defend. Both Lonzo and Caruso defend very well but add value being able to play within the system so they can always be on the floor with the other all-stars the Bulls have.

      I think he's always had a solid ceiling as a defender. On offense he's limited because he's not great at attacking the hoop (as oppose to his brother LaMelo) but his 3-ball jumper improvements has made him an asset along with his open court passing ability. The best part is not only are both Caruso and Lonzo both pesky enough on defense, but can kickstart offenses via those transitions and cash in. Sorta like what the Lebron Heat team did where they utilized their athleticism to pressure the ball handler on midcourt to make bad passes to create turnovers and create those transition situations to score fast.

    I wonder, is there a compounding value to having multiple good perimeter defenders? Mathematically speaking, is the value of having two good perimeter defenders more than twice the value of having only one? Is the sum of their defensive +/- higher than expected when together?
    I would guess yes because of the added value of being able to stifle some switches, and some added value from having good communication (as displayed in the video), but i wonder if there is any statistical evidence?

      I think the key measure is the typical defensive measures when Zo and AC are on the floor together vs not, which according to this is a defensive rating of fucking 30. That is insane in the 60s yet alone now. Grated that defence is mostly against guards, but even then being able to lock down harden, dame, or slow down CP3 or curry that’s invaluable come playoffs. But if they run into the Sixers or the nuggets, the bulls will have a bad time.

This type of hit, fear, it's the one that hurts your psych the most.

My issue with starting Caruso is I think takes away from what the second unit can do. To me you start Green and rotate him out and platoon the guys you have and keep Caruso coming off the bench but manage his minutes so he can play some with the first team and late in games

Caruso and Lonzo doesn't care much if they score 25+ points as long as they win.
