My grandmother grew up during the great depression here in the US. She kept a large closet full of blankets 60 years later for the same reason. My family were mostly sharecroppers, and one bad harvest could leave a family homeless. My father inherited the house from my grandparents after they died. The blankets are still there just in case.

@@AliSafiaduo I hope you can find some. I just discovered stroopwaffels last year (through internet friends in the Netherlands), and they are quite delicious! Buttery waffle wafer cookies with a layer of soft caramel in between. They are large enough to sit on top of a cup of hot beverage (I like coffee, but tea should be good, too). The idea is to have them warm and soften slightly, so that the caramel becomes gooey and the wafers moisten a bit from the steam (but not too much, or the cookie will eventually collapse into your beverage). One of my Netherlands friends likes them in this traditional warmed-up way, but the other prefers them straight out of the package. Some places in the US are starting to carry these now (imported from the Netherlands); I've seen them at Trader Joe's and Lidl (a German grocery store chain recently making inroads here).

    Looks fabulous.
The clay/mud is an excellent building material and those using it can easily expand their living space if necessary.
When I was a child, my Mum remarried and we moved to Lillooet, B.C (Canada) where my step-Dad, who worked for the railway, lived, and I was fascinated with the neighbours across the road, who kept two nanny goats. I grew up in Victoria, a city, and people had pets like cats and dogs and birds, etc. but at 11 yrs old, I had never seen a real goat.
The neighbour boy, Kenny, had some health issues and was allergic to all sorts, the chief among them was cow's milk, which is the usual milk consumed in the west, and sold in stores. In those days, late 1970s, you could not buy goat's milk in any store within 200 miles of our town. So, Kenny's parents, like us, had a few acres of property and had goats so Kenny could drink fresh goat milk. Therefore, we often drank it at their house. It was pretty good - provided the goats did not get into the sagebrush, which gave the milk a peculiar flavour. 😆
(Interestingly, the same went for the honey my step-Dad's bees made. Clover - good, sagebrush - not good. 😄)
I even learned how to milk a goat, but I wasn't very good at it.

I imagined him having a family sword above his fireplace, or an old rifle or shotgun, maybe both. I guess it's because that's what my people do if we're very old fashioned. The man shows it is his house and what he will protect it with.

I've never seen people living in such a dry looking place, no greenery all the way to the mountains and no snow on top of them to melt and bring down water in a stream to the village. There has to be water and grass for the people and the animals, for bushes and crops, for trees to provide firewood. That must be the most peaceful place to live, I heard birds and a goat so there has to be a river or oasis nearby that I missed.

That paratha looks amazing. I'm not sure about goat milk myself Ali but I would love to give it a shot esp since mama Mustafa is so dead set against newfangled poison 🤣. You know he's going to give you the best he has and to find your favorite childhood biscuit at his place!? Wow 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Mustafa would likely feel quite at home in a pueblo in Chaco Canyon. He'd probably approve of the Hopi's traditional food, too. That's what it reminds me of most. I bet the night sky there is amazing. And fresh off the griddle parathas sound really good. There must be a difference in the goat milk there versus here. Every goat milk I've tasted has been very strongly 'goaty' and very different to cow's milk.

It would be interesting to do an episode on the different designs on the cloth and dishes, what do they (colors, designs) symbolize? I love the design of the cups that you were drinking chai from. And what a beautiful sight to be greeted by every day! Majestic mountains.

Goat milk tastes fine, barely different from cow milk, if the herd is all females, but if you keep a buck goat around them, it starts tasting like goats smell. That's what I know about goat milk.

Which is sad because it is really a delicious part of any diet. It was wonderful to see Mustafa’s house and village! A lovely place!!!
