- Pruning blueberries should be done every year. Removing older less productive canes as well as damaged and diseased branches is important. This will allow new vigorous growth to fill in. The pruning should be done during the winter. A significant amount of the bush can be removed even up to 1/3 of the bush. Most of the fruit comes from 3 to 4 year old canes. If a cane reaches 6 years of age it should be removed. If you want more bushes it is easy to propagate a new bush by taking hardwood cuttings from what you pruned off. @FlanaganHomestead
Great job explaining how to prune. It's April here and we have had a long winter in NE Oregon. Really looking forward to getting out in the garden. Too late this year, but I can clean up a few dead limbs. Plants have only been in the ground 5 years but producing really well. Thanks again.
Thank you, I hope your plants thrive and produce abundantly.
Great vid Rob. Thanks for providing links yo relevant vids in the description.
At first when I read that 3-4 year old canes produce most of the berries, I thought about what I’ve also heard: that berries are produced on 1 year old growth. But these are consistent statements: the 1 year old branches are extensions from the canes (or their branches, etc.).
You are correct, sorry I was not more clear. Canes add side laterals and extend up producing fruit on that years growth. Enjoy your berries.
Thanks for the tip on the fruiting vs leaf buds
best video out there, thank you.
Thank you, it is so clear.
We’re on the Canadian east coast, would we stunt our production for the year if I were to prune them now ?
What kind of medium do you use to probate the sprouts
I prefer fine fir bark.
Which month is best to prune.
Any winter month when they are dormant. I aim for right around new years
I got your message but fir bark do you mean pine bark mulch
I am not familiar with pine bark. Here in western Washington we have abundant Douglas fir we log. Therefore we have excess fir bark. That is what I have always used. I have never tried pine bark. My guess is it would be similar to fir bark.
@@FlanaganHomestead thanks for your reply I will try pine bark mulch and try to root my blueberries in February
@@tsink6 let me know how it works
@@FlanaganHomestead I will I live in North Carolina. I have been told to prune in February. It’s cold now and I will have to wait until spring to do anything
I just saw that you live near me. Do you by chance sell your propagated blueberries?
I would love to sell you some but I am currently trying to expand my field and the horticulture class garden so I don’t have any to spare at this point.
How do you keep birds away?
I used to do nets. That was a hassle. Then when the boys were around we kept a pellet gun on the deck. Birds learned any movement near the house meant to flee. Now I just try to have more blueberry bushes than the birds can eat.
Great video! We have 10 blueberry bushes in Stayton, Oregon. Last year. I took my hedge trimmer and did the shape thing. Big mistake. This is easy instructions to follow I will use.
How is the firewood bundle sales going?
@@stevepreston7030 Thanks, glad you liked it. The firewood sales are still solid. I just was doing work down there and watched people pull up and buy wood.
I've got 2 blueberry trees. For one year, I covered nets and found 2 birds dead inside the bushes.. Now I share with them.
