UPDATE: Almost immediately after the release of this video, I learned that it was announced a few days after the article that Toast has retracted the fee they implemented. Hooray! It's rare that angry public outcry gets any results, so chalk one up for the good guys. Nevertheless, I am keeping this video up because though I appreciate that they retracted the fee, I'm certain it was more to avoid public persecution than because it was the right thing to do. As I mention in the video, this isn't the first time they've been called out for shady tactics, and the fact that they thought it was ok to add this fee in the first place reveals who they are as a business. I still believe you should STAY AWAY. Cheers.
One guy says don’t use the platform because of hidden fees, lol. Every owner, manager, bartender, and waitstaff say they love Toast and couldn’t see their business run as effectively & efficiently without it. But trust this random who seems to be sweating the small stuff and the not the 96,000 restaurants that seem to not let a nominal fee bother them.
@@edtayag4696 well honestly I’ve used it and the stuff adds up . They are all basically same as far as fees but I’ll say what I usually say to people about this ….the product is great the SALESPEOPLE SUCK!
I find it disgusting when their POS didn’t print the service fee on the initial check. I had to find out my paid bill’s total (using their online QR scan to pay) doesn’t match up and found this sneaky hidden service fee they didn’t print on the initial check. I cannot tell if I am paying the restaurant or Toast this ‘service fee’. Not sure if this is now a standard practice, but I do not appreciate it.
If you are paying a flat rate for processing and not an interchange rate plus transaction fee you are getting taken for a ride. Toast was a no go for this exact reason.
I reviewed the most recent Toast Financial statement 10k for 2022. In short, what they are doing is similar to what the restaurant industry does with tips. Moving cost from the restaurant to the customer. Quick summary of their financials: They have been at a net loss since IPO, but they have been rapidly reducing losses the last 3 years. Reduction does not seem to be due to this added fee, since their margins are similar but rather due to volume (economies of scale). The conclusion is that they passed on the cost from the customer (restaurants) to the end user. I.e how tips work
You are 100% correct TS, except that the difference is that it's a matter of choice for the restaurants to do this with their own customers. The people who come in and eat are not Toast's customers. The restaurant owners are. Toast is a technology that the owners pay to help run their business better. They are a 3rd party. This is like if I owned a video security company and installed video surveillance cameras in your retail store to help prevent theft and then took $1 from each sale you made to help pay for my "research and development". They should not have a right to decide what the customer is charged. It seems small, but this is where it all starts.
How can I connect another tablet to Toast for my barista without having to buy another KDS or Go2...I need a third device and there's got to be a way to connect via Ethernet, etc.
OMG , Its too late for me. We got Toast and for our restaurants. We had to close the Restaurants ( 2 ) because the City decided to build the Road and ruin our business . Now we are stuck with them 7 months after We are still trying to cancel the contract and they keep billing . We don't know what to do. Also what do you do with the equipment ??
Toast is still a problem. They can't handle larger chains properly, their payment system is not secure, and their service goes out of service often. Still stay away.
I think the customer rear facing display on Toast is a joke! They honestly found the smallest screen for customers to look at and the whole system seems like a toy. I've been placing POS systems for 8 years and there are so many better systems out there.
Interesting video. Based on timestamp 4:50, I'm curious about your take on tipping at restaurants. Maybe you address this in other videos but this is the first of your videos I've seen.
Thanks for the video. My fiancé’s restaurant just got the toast system about a week ago. They went from the aloha system to toast. Employees are realizing that there’s a 1% fee on all checks even if there isn’t a 20% gratuity for parties of 5 of more. Managers don’t know either and they’re going to talk to corporate. Numbers aren’t adding up right and now you can’t even see how much tips you made for the night to keep track of it. You can only log in and see how much your check is. Not sure if it’s toast or the restaurant but it started when the system was changed. Any advice?
If you could design a 100% perfect POS (assuming the business behind it is ethical), what would you change/include in it compared to whats currently available and why? I have a background in tech and am considering a startup with a buddy that owns a few restaurants and is not a big fan of Toast either. Trying to gauge if there’s a big enough demand for something new though - any thoughts?
Thank you , that one just got toasted lol, looking for a good Bakery POS that has a strong inventory management and ingredient tracking you come across any? have you done Lightspeed POS?
@daveallredtherealbarman Our new restaurant that i am helping run uses toast. Any suggestions or things to look out for as a new toast user? Also do you recommend using their payroll system? Our using another company.
What's the name of your company, I'll reach out. We'll cover your termination fees, get you free equipment, and you have a couple options to reduce or eliminate your processing fees. Hope to talk soon. Cheers 🍻
Yes, this is true from a server's standpoint. As I mentioned, the technology is very good. But from an owner and customer standpoint, it's disappointing.
I’ve been in the industry slightly over twenty years. I just started using Toast at my new job. It’s super easy to use. I like the look of it and the ease of use slightly more than Aloha. I’m just here to learn more about it. Looking forward to watching this video to hear what you have to say.
Do you feel this is still true? I am about to sign with toast for my 2 restaurants. Everything seems good, we have been with heartland for years and feel as the technology is lacking and just found we have been paying over $650 more for credit card processing.
You confused me a bit. I am a consumer. Anyone that patron's a diner/restaurant is a consumer. We're consuming. You are the Client. The restaurant is the Client or Customer if you will.
I'm confused by your confusion. If you are a consumer that patron's a diner/restaurant, I'm not sure why you're watching a video on POS systems. I am speaking to bar/restaurant owners and managers who are looking for the best POS system for them. I am not speaking to people who eat at restaurants. Does that clear up your confusion?
They’re bringing another definition to POS company. How can they have 30% of the market share and be @ a loss? It’s like they have no good business management skills. Seems like it’s ran by ppl that should have just been employed as software developers; not every geek can manage a business.
I work for a new restauraunt they are using Toast, I have worked in the restaraunt business for many years, Toast is a pretty crappy system, i wouldn't waste my money on them

I love Toast but its expensive!! Recently their system hasn't been crashing but for 2 years it would crash twice a year. I have a small business coffee shop and its too expensive for me to use. I pay $90 plus $50 for adding giftcard. I cancelled the online ordering since we don't get a lot of online ordering which I had to pay another $50 so thats 190!!! It was just to expensive I recently changed and now I am able to save a lot of money.
Hi Dave, I've been practicing but I can't seem to fill my glasses with the standard recipes. I know I have to account for ice and stuff. Is there an amount that is standard. For example, if I have a 6 oz glass, do I pour 4 oz's of liquids and let the ice fill the rest, or 4 oz's, etc.? Hope this question makes sense lol. Will the bars let me know what the pours are for their drink glasses or am I making this overcomplicated somehow?
Yes, the bars will have their own recipes that you will learn (though I can't promise the portions will be correct; many bars have no idea what they're doing, which is weird, I know). As far as filling them up, it's important that you have the right glassware and that you pack the glass with ice to the top. In addition, if you shake any cocktails, it will dilute a bit and fill up even more with liquor. But in general, if it's a good bar they will train you on all this.

You can program toast to do anything you want, and nothing you dont want. Knowing how to make it work for you, and understanding how to set it up is the key. Some folks are too dense to get that far into the 101, and they should have ZERO input when it comes to the in's and out's of your POS.
Yes, it's agreed that the technology is very good. The problem is the company's ethics and their greed over their customers' well-being. If anyone wants to walk the tightrope, go for it. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Yes, they have the largest market share, but what does that mean exactly? Enron was also the #1 seller of natural gas in the USA in the 90's and it turned out to be one of the biggest ponzi schemes in history, so be careful how excited you get about the "number one" label.
