Finally! An actual diagnostic by a clear, knowledgeable mechanic! I put new pads and calipers on the back of my "06 F250 diesel, and either I didn't get the system bled correctly, or my hydroboost or master cylinder died. Pedal slowly goes to the floor, brakes only come on slightly, a little more when I get to that hard spot at the bottom of the pedal travel. The pedal returns slowly, My helper may have had a heavy foot while bleeding, I bought a rebuilt booster at Oreillys', Maybe that is the problem. I did push on the pedal pretty hard after I installed it. It's had a very slow leak since I installed it coming out to the shaft boot behind the pedal. And it's never held a charge after the engine is shut off. It's been in for about 2 years.
I have a 99’ Express 3500 w/ Vortec 350 just had power steering & brake pressure go out while driving on snow n ice.. as much as i love sketchy shit i dont like it when i weigh 9,000lbs and cant stop or turn very well 🙃 thanks for this video now i know what to look at. Thank you.
great video...i just picked up a astro van with hydroboost that is leaking.....guy who sold it to me thought it was the pump leaking....got it real cheap so worth the fix..
Thank you very much! I was trying to determine if a whine from the power steering pump could be present just from braking. This answered that nicely. Now knowing the PSP is used to boost braking power it is quite likely the noise I have is indeed a PSP.
Hey I have a 2005 Yukon SLT 5.3L automatic with 218,000 miles. All stock equipped. Doesn't make any noise of any kind, that's abnormal. Well kept. I drove it out on the highway for 300 miles and when I exited Interstate it was in manual steering mode...stiff to turn like it had no pump at all. And the brakes were not boosted either. It's not the belt or fluids of steering or brakes...all good. No leaks. No codes. No smells. No noises of pump failure. It only does it at low rpms when coming to stop, under 700 rpm. It works fine when above that. And the brakes are unboosted when it does it also, but work. This is the pump I assume? Remove and replace eh? Suggestions of what pump brands you had success with?
HELP I have a soft brake pedal and weak stopping power on my chevy express 2500. I had a high pressure power steering line leak which I thought was the problem but after replacing that I still have the problem. No lights on the dash indicating a brake or abs issue, no visible leaks, and fluid is full. I tried the pedal test and I really cant even seem to build a solid pedal when the vehicle is off. Im assuming its the hydroboost unit itself, does that sound about right?
Rewatched the video, really love the explaining done here. On my 2010 Chevy Express 2500 LS 6.0L V8, the hydro boost is leaking so I bought the rebuild kit, Thinking that some new gaskets wouldn't do, or is there something different with a new hydro boost vs putting the rebuild kit?
Brought the car into the shop and he claimed it was the brake fluid ,i explained if in fact it's the brake fluid why is the reservoir filled to the top? Obviously it had to be the power steering which would make it the hydro booster which is leaking and that would explain why there is power steering fluid by my brake pedal. And why the need for me to top up my fluid every so often.
Nice video, I had changed my power steering pump and greased the column going to the axle, im thinking its the hydro boost, but does it make sense that my power steering with my wheel is really bad? cant turn my steering wheel without using a lot of strength.
When I fist start my van and begin driving the brakes are very grabby then it smooths out. When I reverse there is smoke that smells like birthday candles and the pwr steering pressure line looks to be leaking from both ends. I’ve been adding fluid. You think if I start by just replacing that line that could fix it all? Do all chevy vans have hydro boost?
Can the hydro boost cause a steering issue where if you were to turn the steering wheel left or right, the brake pedal would go down as if i was pressing the pedal down?
I saw a video “youtube short” where that exact symptom was occurring (brake pedal going down) when the steering wheel was being turned. I can’t remember the channel name, but I watched it within the last four days, good luck.
I applied my brakes real fast and the pedal went down to the floor. I can't find any leaks. Can it be the master cylinder. Or the hydro boost. 2003 GMC 2500 lb7
Hi really need help rebuilt my hydro booster now everytime I start the engine the brake pedal goes the the floor with pressure then when I turn it off it goes back up
Good day; My neighbor has a 2000 chevy 2500 diesel 4wd and brake pedal went to floor. IT has the hydraulic Fluid booster . I tinker and want to try save him a buck. No complaint of steering issue. I felt underside at Master /booster union and feel minimal fluid. No puddle or honest trace of a external leak. Let truck sit for while, hit brake pedal- to floor. I let truck run a bit then shut off - pedal to floor. I held foot on pedal and started - no build up. If I take foot off- pedal will return out. I have not worked on a hydr, just the old canister suction type. Have you come across an internal? On another vid it was concluded a ABS pump was the prob on a like issue. I think the pedal/booster start stop engine pre tests lead me to the booster. Greatly appreciate your thoughts if I have misunderstood sequence of diagnosing. Best; Tom
@@davidmolina4167 Had pinholes in 2 brake lines., which would shoot a little fluid up towards the Master cyl. I replaced and still had issues with stopping and pedal to floor. Come to find out due to lack of use and somewhat a poor design the brake Pads had actually rusted on slide. The caliper would almost bend the pads to make some contact on rotors. Only the caliper side was making any contact. This same thing was at every wheel. I have a vid of me having to almost sledge hammer the pads off. Never seen anything like it before. He had been applying so much pressure over time the master cyl faulted. While in there I went ahead and replaced Both master cyl and hydro boost. New pads and left off those metal shim/boot things. They were designed to help but in this application failed. Working great now and stops on a quarter:)))
I have a 2011 Chevy Express. I just replaced all 4 calipers, I let the fluid drip out of all 4 brake lines. After I was done, I started the car and stepped on the brake pedal to the level of the gas pedal to try to get fluid to the lines. Now I bled the brakes, I cracked the bleeder as someone pumped and no fluid will come out. What should I do?
@@inmyexpression19 What tests did you perform or were performed to determine you should replace the proportioning valve? I’m only asking because of genuine curiosity. Would you happen to know the range of years the Express’ had proportioning valves? Again, I only write this question since I also own an Express. Thank you.
Mine too im havin the same fuckin issue my does when im drivin and on the dash gets the abs check and my brake gets hard then soft at the same time i already tooke the air of the lines and still doin the same thing
You guys ever figure it out? I had to replace a front rubber brake hose in my 3500 that rubbed down when turning or something and lost nearly all my fluid. I replaced it and did the pads too while i was there, bled the brakes like i always do, its firm when engine is off but with it on it goes to the floor and doesn't really want to build pressure.

Does this apply to all brake boosters? no matter the brand "domestics"

Will a bad hydrobooster cause hard steering
The power steering pump parts your brake booster. Having a bad brake booster will affect your steering.
Any one know why my hydro boost not getting pressure it’s ram dodge 2010 3500

Did you do or had done a ABS bleed ? Air gets trapped and the only way to bleed the ABS module is with a scan tool. It's a self bleed
Does anyone know where to get a star retainer and pushrod for a 1981 chevy P30 step van hydroboost/ master cylinder. Need help. Cant find one

Thank you
Know your system. Does the electric pump and low brake pressure alarm come on when ign key is turned ON??
Will that stop it from starting!!!
Hydra-Booster PISTONS do not leak.... The piston SEAL is what leaks. Good luck on finding parts unless you get into MD units.
Very good!!! Russia, siberia
