You have to understand... the network's ratings skyrocketed DURING the episode. People couldn't believe what they were seeing and began calling each other, urging them to turn on their TVs. This episode has become a significant part of American pop culture.
I remember the show being on before, like I’d seen it while flipping through the channels, but for whatever reason, I decided to give the show a shot & this was the first episode I saw. I was a fan after that🤣
This episode is the episode where Seinfeld hit its stride. Watching all the episodes back to back, you'll see a change from the early episodes into the classic show that it became.
@@jeffcameron536 The ending was so perfect! The car wouldn't start. That was not planned, and you can actually see them laughing as Kramer is trying to start the car. Sometimes fate wrote some of the script. 🙂
One of the best comedy episodes of all time! Rickshaw, soup nazi, show about nothing, pirate shirt (low talker) all are great episodes! So glad you’re checking out Seinfeld!
“The Puffy Shirt” is the greatest Seinfeld episode. Not because of the shirt thread, but because of the secondary thread with George as a hand model. Pure GOLD!!!
Seinfeld was the most influential sitcom of the last 30 years, hands down. It was completely revolutionary. And so well written. Seasons 3-8 are really, really solid.
The thing about this episode is they were brilliant with making this so easy to follow without using explicit language. They were able to use made up words, phrases, actions to tell the story, like the sleeping/no sleeping in bed at night. They got this on broadcast TV on a Thursday night. This was the episode that made Seinfeld "viral" in it's day, watercooler talk.
The Indian wedding episode with backwards timing was hilarious and different. Very funny: The race, The fire - Bozo the clown, The sponge - you're sponge-worthy?
There are countless episodes that are absolute classics...might be the best sitcom ever made. Btw, for their jobs, George starts out as a real estate agent (the episodes where he loses that job are awesome) later becomes an assistant for the Yankees. Elaine is an editor for most of the show, and Kramer has the odd scheme now and then but we never really see him with a steady job.
On the night of the finale of Seinfeld Jerry was a guest on the Tonight Show and so was JFK Jr. He said people always complimented him on how well he did in his guest spot on Seinfeld even though he’s not actually in the episode.
I can't believe you guys are actually reacting to Seinfeld. It's a total classic but not many people nowadays agree so I'm surprised. Pleasantly surprised. 👍
I heard my co-workers taking about Seinfeld the next day at work, so I watched my first episode the next week which was "The Letter" and Elaine got in a fight about wearing her Baltimore Orioles baseball cap in the NY owners box seats. I was hooked on Seinfeld ever since. It was very relatable, funny and clever.
The Yada Yada Yada episode is a good one, I love the one where George does the opposite of his instinct, and also the one where Jerry buys his dad a Cadillac which sees him kicked off the condo board, very relatable behaviour from those retirement estates.
@Dos Cavazos: Recommendation of "Seinfeld" episode to watch and react to - "The Outing" - sort of a companion episode to "The Contest" - it has a call back to the "watching a sponge bath" scene. In "The Outing" - a reporter publicly "outs" ( reveals ) "Jerry" and "George" ( Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander ) as gay and a gay couple, thanks to a prank played by "Elaine" ( Julia Louis-Dreyfus ) on a couple of eavesdroppers, and they struggle to convince the rest of the world of their heterosexuality. "Kramer" ( Michael Richards ) has only three ( 3 ) rather brief scenes in this episode, but he makes the most of them. The line "... not that there's anything wrong with that"-as a reference to homosexuality-has become a popular catchphrase among fans. ( "The Outing was Season 4, Episode 17, "The Contest" was Season 4, Episode 11. )
Notice the writers are all so good that they wrote this entire episode without mentioning the M word, without any outlawed words or naughty words. We knew exactly what they were talking about even though they never even mentioned it specifically. That's genius.
See, this is great: next one is The Airport. Great episode, I would never have thought in a million years to ask for that one! There are so many classic episodes - season 5 alone is practically a perfect season - that you can just hit this show any time you want, I'll be there!!
This is one of my all time favorite shows, it's remarkable to see someone watching it for the first time. I normally only watch it with people who've seen every episode 30 times.
This is exactly how I would introduce someone to Seinfeld if they’re not interested in watching it (picking and choosing). You got so many great recommendations, however, I didn’t see anyone recommending “The Abstinence,” S8 E9! You don’t want to miss it 😁
It's completely fine to watch the episodes out of order, they're all very random anyway for the most part. Can't wait for the next ones! Keep doing your thing y'all. My recommendation would be "The Outing"
The first time I watch Seinfeld, I saw out of order. Amazing show. The thing is, I don't live in America, the show was broadcast at 3AM, so I got to tape it and watch it after school. So... I watch it as random episodes, and miss a lot of episodes, and it was completely chaotic. Still amazing show. But... Years later, i get the complete show and started watching in order, not only that, but I became completly obcess with the show. I watch the all show in about a month. And then it clicked. The show is even more genious than it appear. Even if you saw the complet show in order, during it original run, it took you 9 years. There's no way you remember all the little detais. Seeing the show in a month you realize there's not a single line in the show who isn't a joke. Sometimes the joke is from a episode that originaly was 4 or 5 years. There's no way someone remember the previous line. Seeing it in a month, you realize the scale of genious that was Seinfeld. Every single line in the show is a joke, everything is tightly connected. And there's no way a normal person realizes that in a normal viewing. It's just impossible.
Well... I guess everybody know this, because it's obvious, but it's a good exemple of what Seinfeld was. I think everybody knows that the last scene in the show it's the very first scene in the show. The first and last dialogue it's the exact same dialogue. Nine years apart
What's funny to me is that the characters never use the word to describe what George's mom caught him doing (they walk right up to the line, but never say it). If you're taking requests on Seinfeld, check out the episode about the barber. Keep up the great work!
The Soup Nazi, Serenity Now!, The Parking Garage, The Marine Biologist ... there are just so many hilarious ones - virtually ANY episode, especially after season 2.
I am so happy you guys are doing Seinfeld!! Please do my favorite episode "the abstinence" it has everything, it includes the Kramer "face is my case" part also!
This episode is one of my three favorite Seinfeld episodes of all time, you also need to watch the episode called "the switch" and then the episode where Kramer picks up the backstage of the old Merv Griffin show set. Trust me, it is a classic
A year or so after this episode, Jerry was on the Tonight show. JFK, Jr was on, too. It was funny him razzing on Jerry about his part in the story. I laugh so hard at George's mother in the scene in the hospital.😂😂
I'm in my 50s and it's so strange to me that young people don't know what Seinfeld was. That's my all time favorite sitcom. I watched it in my 20s and LOVED it. You didn't see and don't see this type of humor in other shows. Brilliant.
All the episodes mentioned are great but one of my favorites is The Library Cop episode…does kind of a take on the old Dragnet series from the 60’s etc. Jerry gets investigated for not returning a library book decades earlier. The guy that played the cop was perfectly cast!
I remember, during the show's first run, Seinfeld was interviewed by, I think, "Sixty Minutes". One of the nicest things he said was that the smartest thing he did was to surround himself with gifted actors and let them run away with the scripts.
There are some episodes with callbacks to The Contest. The Outing has an amazing callback. The Puffy Shirt has info on the winner of The Contest. And the first part of the series finale has a revelation on The Contest.
My all time favorite : The Airport which features Kramer's most epic entrance at the very end. Also, The Bris which has a eccentric mohel (moy ul) that performs a circumcision who is so outrageous he steals the episode.
Elaine works for several book publishers on the show, the most well known was working for her boss J. Peterman who was also a very funny re occurring character
A great later reference was when George was a hand model and the boss was worried about him falling in love with his hands and ruining his career by "you know", and George says, "Don't have to worry about that, I won a contest."
this is the best way to watch it... I didn't like seinfeld when I saw 2 epsiodes in the 90s... the contest was about the 3rd epsiode i watched about a decade later... and then I was hooked.

Elaine - "I shave my legs!"..........Kramer - "not every day". One of the best low key jokes ever.

"Not that there's anything wrong with that."
They slipped this episode past the censors by never uttering the word. Pure brilliance.
A nice metajoke occurs a few episodes later when George drops the word gratuitously.
This was the 90's. The censors didn't care. Shows talked about masturbation all the time.
Any ep with George's parents are a must for new viewers 😂
"The Festivus" episode.
Serenity Now
The Chinese Woman and The Doorman
When they go to dinner at Susan's parents.
Frank's ptsd episode also the Maestro one.
The Soup Nazi, the Switch, the Opposite, the Marine Biologist, the Merv Griffin Show, the Serenity Now, the Strike...
There are too many!
Those first 5 are definitely top 10 episodes. Along with The Contest.
The abstinence and the note!

The Parking Garage!

"The Opposite" although it's so iconic you might want to build up to it with a few other episodes first.
