And that young boy on a pony that went ahead of the aboriginal group was a 9 year old who rode alone on his pony from Leongatha in Victoria. He became an engineer working for Holden. He was allowed by his parents to make the journey as a reward for his hard work on the family farm while his father was incapacitated. Can anyone imagine that today?
This is a sham, that ribbon had already been cut! Francis De Groot rode in on horseback wielding a sword while wearing his WWI uniform, and he majestically slashed the ribbon and declared the bridge open, only to have it re-tied and cut by this jealous dude, Jack Lang.
Being a New Zealander, I can't speak for any Aussies - but in all my 45 years I can't remember seeing a scene of similar civic pride reenacted. Then again, I can't remember anything as vital as this bridge being built in the last 45 years either.
