Mary anointed Christ in the expectation that He was about to be crowned king, not because she believed He would rise from the dead. "At great personal sacrifice she had purchased an alabaster box of “ointment of spikenard, very costly,” with which to anoint His body. But now many were declaring that He was about to be crowned king. Her grief was turned to joy, and she was eager to be first in honoring her Lord. Breaking her box of ointment, she poured its contents upon the head and feet of Jesus..." DA 558 "On the first day of the week, very early, they made their way to the tomb, taking with them precious spices to anoint the Saviour's body. They did not think about His rising from the dead. The sun of their hope had set, and night had settled down on their hearts." DA 788

Actually, DA says she now wanted to use it to annoint him as everyone was saying he was about to be crowned king. So while the outcome is the same, the detail doesn't agree with the text. Jesus interprets it as for his burial, probably to remind her and the disciples of what he has kept saying to them, that he wasn't going to be crowned, but be killed.

"Christ told Mary the meaning of her act, and in this He gave her more than He had received. “In that she hath poured this ointment on My body,” He said, “she did it for My burial.” As the alabaster box was broken, and filled the whole house with its fragrance, so Christ was to die, His body was to be broken; but He was to rise from the tomb, and the fragrance of His life was to fill the earth. Christ “hath loved us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.” Ephesians 5:2. DA 560

Egw does say that she had heard the rumors that He would be crowned King, and that cheered her heart, but she also says that it was the Holy Spirit that guided her to do it, and she didn't fully understand why, so Jesus explained to her why she had done it, which was more than just a brief flicker of disbelief in Jesus's words.
So this is looking at it from what we know now of why she did it, which may not have been exactly what she was conscious of at the moment.

I also question if this message is 100% on point. Nonetheless, it led me to read up for myself, and I am benefited by it just the same. Either way, I must allow the possibility of being the one in error. Therefore, the Holy Spirit has done His work.
