- Trains at... Abbey Wood
Abbey Wood Station originally opened on 30th July 1849 by the then South Eastern Railway. The original station had two brick platforms and an ornate ticket office with wooden canopies. At one end of the station there was a gated level crossing and a signal box. In 1899 Abbey Wood fell into the hands of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway which then passed down to the Southern Railway in the 1923 grouping.
In 1948, as part of Nationalisation, Abbey Wood was taken over by British Rail.
In 1987, British Rail Network SouthEast rebuilt Abbey Wood Station and removed the signal box and level crossing, the ticket office was replaced and a new over bridge for the main road was constructed. In 1996 after the Privatisation of British Rail, Abbey Wood became part of Connex South Eastern and eventually South Eastern Trains. Today's Abbey Wood Station opened in 2017 to serve the new Elizabeth Line. It has four platforms with modern steel and glass canopies and a large semi circular ticket hall. The Elizabeth Line opened in 2022 and increased passenger numbers to the area significantly. There have been plans to extend the London Overground and DLR to Abbey Wood but none have come to fruition. Today Abbey Wood is served by the Elizabeth Line, Southeastern and Thameslink services.
