  • An online event organised by the Clean Arctic Alliance and WWF-Canada.
    Date: Tuesday 6 December 2022
This webinar focuses on how the use of scrubbers - also known as EGCS (exhaust gas cleaning systems) - have turned global shipping’s air pollution problem into an ocean pollution problem, and why use of scrubbers may conflict with UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea).
Hear from Henn Ojaveer discusses advice from ICES’ (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) - the world’s oldest intergovernmental science organisation - on scrubbers, from Ida-Maja Hassellöv on the science underpinning ICES’ recommendations, and from legal expert Aldo Chirop as he explores inconsistencies between the use of exhaust gas cleaning systems and UNCLOS.
    Speakers:
Sam Davin (opening remarks) - Senior Specialist, Marine Conservation & Shipping - WWF-Canada
Aldo Chircop -Professor of Law, Marine & Environmental Law Institute, Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Henn Ojaveer - ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Advisory Committee vice-chair
Ida-Maja Hassellöv - Professor, Maritime Environmental Science, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden and ICES WGSHIP chair
Moderated by Eelco Leemans - Clean Arctic Alliance Technical Advisor
