The role playing you are trying to describe is that of something between Squadron / Air wing Ops officer, and Intel Analyst. Depending on how you see the group you manage. It can't really be a squadron, because they are single aircraft type, but if you bend the rules (in your head) a bit you can see where the role would lie.
Great review, and I need to get the Air Leader series back on the table. I've played Hornet Leader and even posted a review on BGG. You're correct in that the actual battles happen pretty quickly, but that 5 minutes are the most stressful 5 minutes you'll find in a game! And if you fly in my squadron and get shot down, be warned that my search & rescue positively stinks!
Great overview/review! I've got a chance to pick up phantom leader deluxe or zero leader for around the same price and can't decide! Any experience with zero leader and which one you prefer? Thanks, again!
You're so spot on. When I play this game I always feel like I'm the commanding officer of a squadron somewhere in a sweaty tent in Vietnam, or on the deck of a carrier planning missions for my fly boys. So unexpectedly immersive. By the way, have you ever tried Enemy Coast Ahead? If you have, what do you think about it?
Oh don't get it on my account. I haven't played it either. Looks fun though. So I was hoping you might have played it and could provide an opinion before I got it myself.
Amazing review, thank you. There was a computer game released resently with a similar theme to the emergent dataentry roleplay aspect (haha!). Papers Please it's called. You have to do passport checks of immigrants to a faux eastern country. Probably not as personal for you, but you might enjoy it.

@@beakerkell Not tried Zero. Love Phantom though.
@@DriveThruReviewThanks! Do you still play it often?
I've not played it for a couple of years now actually. Ran through a campaign twice and enjoyed it quite a bit.

I've not heard of that. I'll check it out.

Do you prefer this over TAL? I'm trying to decide which one to dive into first.
Yes. Just slightly, and mostly because of the theme.
Ships?
Ships? :)
It just seemed funny. You referred to the aircraft as ships. :)
Phantom Leader Deluxe or Hornet Leader... arg cant decide!
Tough call!
Nice review. Game looks so fun.
Thank you for your review

I know Papers Please. My friend at work showed it to me. Crazy little game.
