Fantastic video! I'm from Clinton County {Lock Haven} My Uncle Larry grew up in Bitumen just across the street from the church. They eventually made the homestead a camp. I'm 60 now and I vividly remember riding our motorcycles around the stripping's there. The shovels were still in operation when we would ride around them. Now I'm thinking it had to be the same era as the video of your parents. We used to ride the strippings around Scootac, Peacock, and all over the Beech Creek Mountain area for years. The Susquehanna is finally recovering from AMD. The last 10 years has shown a HUGE difference in river grass and aquatic life. I've been a boater since the late 70's and I can tell you the AMD would literally eat the galvanizing from the transom of our old boats and oxidize the aluminum on the pontoons. I found your channel because I'm a abandoned coal mine research enthusiast. I enjoy reading and researching the history of the Anthracite industry in the Northern, Middle, and Southern Fields. I was married to my first wife in 1987 from Reading. So many trips down 54, 61, 901. I had so many friends from the coal regions that I raced with in both motorcycle racing and sprint car racing. Still do today. Some of the best riders and drivers came from those culm piles!! Last I saw the worst AMD area in Pa was coming from the Fran Coal Mine North East of Keating. If you Google that you will see the article.
Hey Van... cool video. I have a camp just up from yours. I am the guy that stopped and told you about the retention pond when you and your boys were checking out. Small world!!!
Nice to hear from you! I'm glad you found the video. Please share it with local folks who may appreciate the history. Hope to see you in the woods again soon.
