This movie was impacted by the writer strike and lead to the Director and Daniel Craig doing some of the screenplay un-accredited.

Quantum of solace means a little comfort. Bond doesn't find peace in revenge because Vesper meant so much to him and her loss wounded him so deeply. As he mentioned in Casino Royal his work has a cost and he feels her death took the last of his humanity all he has left is duty.

This movie was unlucky to met with 2007-2008 WGA strike during filming, I heard director Marc Foster had to used a barely finished script to filming this movie. Which is why everything felt rushed this time, left tons of questions unanswered. Only Bond found bit of closure with Vesper's death.

The opera is Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. It's in Italian and oh hell yes there is murder! It's an amazing piece that I've been able to sing chorus in. You gave my hubby a shoutout for his auditions-he sings the lead tenor role(Mario Cavaradosi)often. The two big solo numbers, Vissi d'arte(I lived for art) and E lucevan le Stelle(And the starts were shining)are two of opera most recognizable arias. RUclips 'em. Really great

It's closer than that. Goldfinger for decades was the best bond film. And while I agree that Skyfall is the best Bond film, Goldfinger is still a very close #2. Daniel Craig was so good, but Sean Connery was consistently better.

Because of the writers strike, they leaned heavily into the action scenes to fill out the narrative and the run time. it's still an enjoyable watch, and with time and context it means more to the overall arc, but still a weaker installment. But Judi Dench again just kills it at as "M".

Since the nerves that go to the digit or limb is still there just cut short the sensory input and return still works. Bond is Bond so naturally there's a degree of "super human" to his performance and a lot of plot armor but also, you can do a lot when you're a highly trained agent running on a massive amount of adrenalin. That lets you push through a lot that might otherwise be debilitating since the body will block out or reduce the inputs from pain receptors. After you come down off that high you'll crash hard though. I think arguably the more impressive (and "just Bond things" moment is after the fight when he calmly walks back.)
I am not highly trained and I was able to (unknowingly) push through a broken rib and a punctured lung playing soccer for a good 10 min before being unable to breathe or really stand, just from the adrenalin. There are a lot of other, far more impressive, real world examples too.

I think this is a rather solid Bond movie, and one that hits all the beats a Bond movie should. But it suffered from very choppy editing (particularly in the early half of the movie) as a result of issues during post-production, and it made this the black sheep of the Daniel Craig 007 films.

Someone once described this as 007's manic-depressive suicidal f*ck murder party; a fever dream 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' sequel you never got, which is destined to be misunderstood. Interestingly, the majority of the film - all of the action sequences, basically - was in fact directed by the second unit director and stuntman, Dan Bradley, who's worked on the Bourne films, Green Zone, Spiderman 2 & 3, Indiana Jones (Crystal Skull & Dial of Destiny), and loads of other action films. Everything else was Marc Foster. Great director, who understands character, but the script - or what little there was of it - really did fail him. Great fun rewatching with you both!

I agree with everyone who say this particular Bond movie is underrated. It moves at a faster pace than Casino Royale & has a much different vibe but is an excellent bridge to Skyfall. And Olga Kurylenko is lowkey one of the best Bond girls in the franchise; not a conquest of 007's but an EQUAL.

Mathis was betrayed by his old friend, the police chief, who he didn't know was corrupt and already working with Greene/Medrano. The police chief makes a comment at Greene's party about Mathis being "a mutual friend", hence Bond's comment "You and I had a mutual friend!" right before he kills the police chief to avenge Mathis.

This isn't many people's fave, but I liked it a lot. Maybe because it resolved the Vesper plot, in a satisfying way. Plus, there isn't a real romance plot-- there's Bond's friendship with Camille, and his caring for M. But another romance would have sucked. This worked better.

    • @cassandramcbride7007
      @cassandramcbride7007 6 месяцев назад

This is my favourite of the Craig Bond films because it gives us a human and flawed Bond more than the others. The one thing I keep telling people when they say they didn't think this movie was as good as Casino Royale is that this is the the end chapter of CR. It's Bond finally becoming Bond and learning temperance. He finally learned also through what Camille went through as a female counterpart to his. He finally saw through her a mirror of himself. So for me, this film is better in that Bond finally becomes Bond. Craig's work in this acting wise is better in the amount of layers he had to show. Also this film showed how the world does work. It's not about terrorists like LaChiffre. It's about the world's resources and how governments hold them hostage for profit. The world can find other alternatives to oil in terms of wind, solar, etc. But the world cannot exist without water. If millionaires start buying up land for aquifers, we're all screwed. Greene may not have been an "impressive" villain, but he was the kind to fear because he has more money and power through moving money to fund corrupt governments. One only has to look at what's happening in Russia right now with Putin. His hit on Navalny. That's how the world works. That's what this film was showing. Again, why this is my favouirite of Craig's time as Bond.

Quantum was a continuation of Casino and not necessarily a stand alone film. Notice how it picked up right after the events of the first film. He shot Mr. White at the end of the previous movie and he was in the trunk being taken in for the interrogation at the beginning of this one. I think that's why it feels so different than the other Daniel Craig Bond films.

This movie suffered a bit from the fact that it was filmed during the 2007 writers strike in Hollywood. So no rewrites, no changes made to the script to clean things up and/or improve the story. They had to go with what was there. Also Casino Royale was so good that this one doesn't quite live up to the standard that it set. Skyfall though. . . Skyfall ups the ante and improves on everything. IMO it is the BEST Daniel Craig Bond film. And I will die on this hill, but I would rank Skyfall above Goldfinger as the best Bond film of all time.
Edit: 56:44 I was writing this and just as I finish and hit the button to post it, this pops up.

Before Vesper, there as just the job. After Vesper Bond had a heart. She opened it, allowed him to feel again. That is why losing her is such a tragedy. Just as he opens himself up, she seemingly betrays him, but really worked to save him. but she knew if she lived they would be hunted. This movie was about revenge, and letting go, as you saw when he dropped the necklace. And at the same time proving to M, that as he said. "I never left."
I know alot didn't like this movie as much, but when you take is as part of the whole, it was really needed for the arch that Bond goes through through out these films. Alot of was dumped in this film, but it only adds to the mystic, and the depth that is Spectre. This film shows just how far spread the Organization is. As the first film set it up.

The most underrated Bond film in my opinion due to the fact most people hated it even after being aware of the writers strike. The action scenes are great, location is great, the villain isn’t that bad, he’s realistic for one which is one of the most important things for me, there’s several Greene’s operating in real life, combine this with the corrupt military general and it strengthens it because it’s accurate and relatable to current and previous historical events (dictatorships, coups, regimes)
There’s been at least 4-5 villains who were worse because they didn’t even have the realistic element going for them.
I agree that the plot should be stronger but at least it’s a realistic plot, including the US government with it’s historical links to coups and attempted coups in the America’s was a nice addition. Combine this with the writers strike, there should be some exceptions. It definitely shouldn’t be hated, disliked by some yes but not hated.

These movies with Daniel Craig are all one story, cant say more. That's why Vesper is mentioned so much. These are all great movies. Cant wait to see your reaction of the others.

The person who plays Camille is Olga Kurylenko. She is an action movie star in her own right! I hope you check out some of her movies! This movie was good, but I think you're right, Steven. It is not as good as Casino Royale. That is not to say this movie sucked or anything; it is really good! But the stakes were a little vague... It is hard to feel the same about someone wants to control water when most of the industrial world are already doing that! Good eye, Nikki for spotting that toupe right off the bat!! LOL! I think it was worn on purpose to set up the fall and "apology" later. As for M, well, sometimes I wonder if she was playing along with Bond since they discovered there were "secret society" agents in MI6! And the woman covered in oil is a sort of call back to Goldfinger. This movie was good enough that many Bond fans were expecting Daniel Craig to continue as Bond! Not only that, but their budget and writing got better after this movie, as well as a big name star for the theme song (for Skyfall)! And Alex, the "brother from Langley" seems to have taken to Bond as well! But not Hopper... Great reactions! Really enjoyed the comments as well! Looking forward to Skyfall!!

In this movie, bond had to get out all the feelings he still had wrapped up in his little finger.

This is the only James Bond movie where I couldn't wait for the action sequences to conclude. They exhausted as it appeared the film editor wanted to include footage from every camera. Instead of scenes being choreographed, they flash by the screen in rapid succession. If this movie was re-edited and this major flaw corrected, Quantum of Solace would improve incredibly.

I have watched Casino Royale a lot over the last few months and as well as being thoroughly entertaining it has also done something I didn't think was possible... It has made me realise that Quantum of Solace is in fact quite a good film. Sure, it has some pretty significant weaknesses such as the frantic editing during action sequences and muddled plotting but I'm often inclined to forgive execution issues when the intentions are good and there are hints of brilliance peeking through. There is some really great stuff here like the use of Camille as a reflection of Bond and his journey and battle with grief and revenge.
As I mentioned previously the plot is muddled and unfolds at breakneck speed which on a first watch can really distract you from the great work being done under the surface. Until my most recent watch of Quantum of Solace I, like everyone in the film thought James was out of control and stacking up bodies on a quest for revenge when in actuality he is doing the total opposite. He has buried himself in his work in an attempt to hide from his grief. All of the kills he carries out are either for good unemotional reasons or unavoidable, and most importantly he does not take revenge by killing Dominic Greene or Yusef Kabira who were the 2 people actually complicit in Vesper's death.
It does have significant flaws and it may actually work better as an extended coda to Casino Royale but Quantum of Solace is a better film than it is given credit for, that tells a story about revenge and whether there is any solace to be found in not pursuing it.

Out of all the Bond movies, it's still better than Connery's, Brosnan's and Moore's worst. It's a solid 6 out of 10; if watched immediately after Casino Royale, a 6.75

I grew up watching Bond movies so I've seen every one. Each Bond has been a reflection of the time in which they were made. I think Dame Judi Dench was the best M, she was the only one that didn't take Bond's crap either from this one or Brosnan's version.

It's a rough film but Craig is top notch in it, I'd rather watch this than most of the ones that come next. Skyfall holds a special place in my heart though.
