I always order my drinks with no ice in them, that way you get a full cup and get the most for your money because the drink already comes out cold, it doesn't need ice.
I love how you say "'Soda is expensive at the drive through". In Norway we pay $3.47 for a MEDIUM coke at McDonald's. My favorite is Coke btw, always have and always will be.
Here in Sweden, you get a medium Coke with the meal. So its included in the price. Also we've started to fill our own cups so most people take without ice to get more soda.
Here in Florida McDonald's the small medium and large are all 1 dollar. Originally it was just a promotion that was so popular that its now just standard.
I live in Tucson and we get the $1 drink special at McDonalds as well but I still appreciate what you have done here Jack. My roommates and I have often contemplated these exact ideas when it comes to fast food and restaurant chains so whether a place has a special or not, we always like to know what the better buy. I hope you keep this series going and I think you should also include gas station drinks too since Circle K, Quick Trip, etc. tend to have drink specials.
The soda itself is comparatively cheap to most restaurants. The cup costs them more. That’s why they use cups as units for inventory. Nowadays many fast food restaurants let you fill your own and even take refills-you know they wouldn’t do that if the soda syrup and CO2 were expensive!
I worked fast food in the 70's, was even a manager for a while. Soft drinks were, as is now with most if not all restaurants, the highest profit item by far. (Ever notice how restaurant drink orders are always taken first?) All our employees were trained to 'suggestive sell' drinks at any opportunity. Now when (or if) I buy, I always order without ice. It's dispensed at 40°F (same temp as your refrigerator), and is plenty cold for me, plus you get a LOT more product for your money! Try it!
@Umbers35 Where do you shop? Around here, 2 liter bottles sell for about $1.70 regular price. They go on sale quite often for about a buck a bottle. Once in a while they will go on sale for 70 or 80 cents.
Waring: I dont drink fast food beverages at times because Next time you get a fountain drink at a fast-food joint, you might want to ask for no ice. Samples of ice taken from branches of McDonald's, Burger King, KFC and Starbucks found that the ice contained higher levels of bacteria than samples of water taken from the restaurant's toilet. (We'll pause for a moment to let that sink in.) Most of the time the ice sits in your drink as it melts
Convenience stores are usually cheaper. There's one here in Colorado called Loaf N' Jug (weird name, I know) Where you can buy a 64 oz (about half a gallon) cup of soda for $1.60, and bring it back whenever you want for an 85 cent refill.
McDonalds here in Chicago is only a dollar for any size drink includes iced tea.McDonalds Coke is absolutely incredible although I'm sure the sugar content is through the roof. The taste is incredible
@AuntDuddie I would but i just don't do soda. I find it kind of yukky. I can't see spending $100 for the syrups and the starter kit to make something at home that I don't normally drink. It's like by a kit to make beer.
I don't drink soda, I usually get/bring water if I eat out. However, my boyfriend does drink a lot of soda, and I'm not sure if this chain is nation-wide (we're in NY), but when he gets food he stops at Cumberland Farms (it's a kind convenience store) and can get any size drink (including slushies) for 89 cents. They also do any size hot beverage (coffee or hot chocolate) for 99 cents.
I with you Jack. Getting a soda from a fast food place really isn't worth it. Most of the time the soda is not the right mix. (to much carbonation) So here is what I do. I buy those little flavored water packets. You justr mixed you mix with water. They come in single packs and you can get ALL kinds of flavors. Then order water and add one. Its better for you and you save money. :)
I always get the McDonalds iced coffee with no ice because they actually give you the same amount of coffee for each size. They just put more ice in the taller sizes to compensate.
Seeing as you can get 16 ounces of soda for $1.25 in vending machines, Taco Bell has the closest, best offer. McDonald's and Hardee's are making you pay more to make a profit - even though they probably mix a lot of water with their drinks, meaning you're actually paying more for less. I like the idea of the series Jack, hope you continue this and put more Fast Food elements in it. :)
Fast food drinks are pretty much a rip off, especially if you get ice. I had a friend who worked at McDonald's and part of their training for the large sweet tea was that you had to put enough ice in the cup so that only a happy meal sized cup full of sweet tea would fit in the cup.
Considering you can usually find a generic 2 liter bottle of cola for around a dollar (and name brand ones are often on sale for around $2), fast food soda really isn't worth it. Buy one, then wash and keep the plastic cup and lid so you can reuse it. Or just use a travel mug and fill it at home before you go out. The nice thing is that pouring your own lets you decide how much or how little ice you want to add. Besides, you really don't know how often fast food places clean their ice makers.
you got the least ice in the mcdonalds drink , but here in Australia McDonalds is always the one to put in more ice and less drink out of all the fast food places
This is why I always get a soda without ice in it. I want a 32 oz soda to actually contain 32 oz of soda. I worked fast food after getting out of high school, and even with price increases since then, a large soda only costs the store around $0.25 to make.
@chrysb81 Diet Mt Dew is the best diet drink on the market. Unfortunately, they are still using Aspartame for their sweetener. I hear that isn't good for you. it affects your joints.
@n2n001 no. I chose not to continue sponsors. I think it clutters the show. I hate commercials as much as anyone. If I am meant to make money then it will have to come other ways. I try to do a show that I would want to watch. :D
My 2 cents worth is.... I always ask for a small amount of ice when I buy a drink from a fast food joint. However, many times I ask for water. Cool idea to compare. You get 2 thumbs up!
In Wisconsin the large sodas are all different from those three places. McD's is 33oz, Taco is like 32oz (so pretty close), and Hardees (Carl Jr's) is 44oz. That's where the diff in Large is. As for prices, the McD's is a 1.00/lg, Taco is like 1.89/lg, and CJ's is like 2.30/lg. The difference in price is mostly because of the size for CJ's. This could have been a smidge more accurate if you'd gotten the Med Coke from CJ's (As it's about 32oz)
I love seeing you drive thru my hometown of Cypress. I didn't realize you were so close! I remember when that corner where the Taco Bell is use to have a Jack in the Box. And I'd go to that Carl's every day when I worked at PacifiCare. Fun!
Soda machines are the highest profit margin item in any fast-food joint or convenience store. I just order water. It pairs well with anything on the menu.
@loganx77 In America, you can order a "meal" at these places (which will include a drink) but if you ask, you can buy things separately, too. They will not force you to buy a drink.
I always ask for no ice when they fill the cup. I usually just get the dollar size pop and refill it. The point I want to make, though is that soda sales are a huge profit for restaurants. They charge 2.00 for what I've read, costs them pennies. It's difficult to get reliable numbers but I've read that soda sales are almost all profit. Want to save money at restaurants? Drink water. Buy soda when it is on sale, and drink it at home. A family of 4 could save almost $10 on their bill.
It's "sometimes" better to not order sodas? Try, "it's ALWAYS BETTER to not order sodas." They're a huge contributor to obesity. Get iced tea instead, unless it's that McDonald's sweet tea in which case you might as well have two Cokes.
In Washington, at Mcdonalds, they sell any fountain drink, coffee, tea, and any size for $1. So a large Coke price would be the same as a small coke price. I don't know if they have it anywhere else but I know the deal is in Washington because I live here. :]
@Rob2OH3Jack Most if not all fast food soda is mixed right in the serving nozzle at a 5:1 carbonated water to syrup ratio. If the mix is even a little off, customers immediately begin complaining. However, far as ice goes it's no holds barred
Instead of buying the drinks from the restraunt me and my parents go to a gas station and buy a thrist buster for 80 cents much better price and much more soda. :)
Actually McDonald's is the best value because its soda has a bigger syrup to carbonation ratio than any other fast food place. Also, the owner of all the McDonald's in my area set up a promotion that has been going on for a while (with no end in sight) that is any size soda for $1. So you are paying $1 for a better controlled, more flavorful soda, with less ice meaning more product. Seems to be a winner to me. :D
There's this channel called everydaydrinkers.tv, and the guy uses a soda stream machine. Yes, it is a cocktail channel, but I think he's done a review on that.
So after being overweight all my life, failed diets, exercise programs, and all (turns out my thyroid is all jacked. Im on medication to correct it and have lost 30lbs since september.), I'm getting weight-loss surgery. Once it's over, I'll only be able to eat 4oz per meal. I'd like to challenge to to do a show showing how to make a full, healthy meal that is only 4oz. Think you can do it?
best way to get your monies worth is to get a $1 sweet tea from McDonalds and just fill it with your own soda ( if the machine is self serve and not behind the counter)
Jack, I honestly think that it's Carl's Jr. > Taco Bell > McDonalds. While most people tend to order drinks with ice (especially in the drive though), I tend to leave the ice out in exchange for more soda. If I really want ice then I would ask for a free cup of ice. With that said, the amount of ice shown in your video would be melted and exchanged for the soda. But I do agree with you that buying soda at the store is far more cheaper than any of the three.
well when you are getting a meal it is more worth it because if you just order a sandwich and fries it costs about the same as a meal (sandwich fries and a drink)
That's why I go to Circle K before going to Subway, for example. 69 cents for ANY size, even the large. Subway rips you off on soda and the selection is better at Circle K, with Coke and Pepsi products.
So a lady is too slow turning, so you try to cut in front of her, but she's in the wrong? WTF?!!!
What he did is extremely common in cali. None of those mfers know how to drive.
Or order with no ice
I always order my drinks with no ice in them, that way you get a full cup and get the most for your money because the drink already comes out cold, it doesn't need ice.
That's why I walk in, I either don't get ice or get some ice
This is a great idea for a series. The Pizza analysis episode has alwas been one of my favourites! Good stuff, looking forward to the next episode!
I love how you say "'Soda is expensive at the drive through". In Norway we pay $3.47 for a MEDIUM coke at McDonald's.
My favorite is Coke btw, always have and always will be.
@loganx77 God bless you guys in Sweden. Love that you watch the show. Thanks.
Here in Sweden, you get a medium Coke with the meal. So its included in the price. Also we've started to fill our own cups so most people take without ice to get more soda.
Hey she didn't cut you off.. she was first .... you were the anxious one :) ... check your video she was first on the solo line!
Here in Florida McDonald's the small medium and large are all 1 dollar. Originally it was just a promotion that was so popular that its now just standard.

"Playing with your food"
-does drinks

Jack, this is a great idea. More like this please.
Next time you go to a fast food place what I do is I order a large soda with no ice and you'll pay the same but more soda for you
New series sounds great! Keep it going, along with your usual shows, of course!
I worked fast food in the 70's, was even a manager for a while.

MCDS because in my town there large drink is One Dollar and I Love Dr Pepper
@sikesy7 my fast food places have buttons that are for small med and large. they pour the same each time.
@FlatandSharp0 i'll keep that in mind for future episodes. thanks. sorry.
@DickLodge68 this was in the drive thru. that won't work. Your not allowed to drive back and refill.
Waring: I dont drink fast food beverages at times because Next time you get a fountain drink at a fast-food joint, you might want to ask for no ice. i normally order soda without ice for two reasons, you get more soda for your money and i cant handle really cold beverages
Convenience stores are usually cheaper. There's one here in Colorado called Loaf N' Jug (weird name, I know) Where you can buy a 64 oz (about half a gallon) cup of soda for $1.60, and bring it back whenever you want for an 85 cent refill.

I live next to so many fast food restaurants. There's a Jack in The Box, McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell, and Arby's!

getting a pound of ground beef, and a 2 liter is the best deal you can do. also getting cheese and buns from 99c store, cant beat that
the catch to getting a drink with your meal is that the drink becomes cheap when you finish the combo with it
Considering you can usually find a generic 2 liter bottle of cola for around a dollar (and name brand ones are often on sale for around $2), fast food soda really isn't worth it. Besides, you really don't know how often fast food places clean their ice makers.
In Denmark, the largest size we can get is around 16 ounces (500 ml) and it costs around $5. Amazing.
you got the least ice in the mcdonalds drink , but here in Australia McDonalds is always the one to put in more ice and less drink out of all the fast food places
The size of this ice in the middle glass reminds me of the ice they put in night club toiletroom.
Its the same type of Ice.
This is why I always get a soda without ice in it. I want a 32 oz soda to actually contain 32 oz of soda. I worked fast food after getting out of high school, and even with price increases since then, a large soda only costs the store around $0.25 to make.
The only time I ever get drinks at a fast food place is during dollar drink days at Mcdonalds during the summer.
Weird, a large soda at my local McDonald's (in Indiana) is $1.09.
Thats because a year ago, McDonald started an ad campaign to lower prices to $1 at my state (Arizona), yours must be higher for some reason
Dylan Wang Probably because of tax.
leaving the air conditioner on full blast to keep the ice from melting. Your logic makes me giggle.
@SeverusAlex your English is fine. Thanks for watching.
@chrysb81 Diet Mt Dew is the best diet drink on the market. Unfortunately, they are still using Aspartame for their sweetener. I hear that isn't good for you. it affects your joints.

Lmao im going to get a coke because coke owns
gets to order: ill take a large pepsi...
-_____-
This movie theatre by my place called Cineplex Odeon, has these medium sized drinks the size of 1 and a half of those Carl Jr. drinks.
Soda machines are the highest profit margin item in any fast-food joint or convenience store. I just order water. It pairs well with anything on the menu.
idk if its just my area, but mcdonald's drinks are all $1 each, no matter what size. i order no ice anyway to get more beverage
@Darkyodajedi it's all coming in time. I promise.
hell yeah! love this new series.
order no ice it's the nastiest item on the menu
In Singapore, a can of soda (Coke) only cost 55 cents, which is about 40 cents USD. Is it significantly cheaper or about the same in the states?
everytime im hungry i come here then end up making a PB&J sandwich.
@loganx77 In America, you can order a "meal" at these places (which will include a drink) but if you ask, you can buy things separately, too. They will not force you to buy a drink.
It's not just sweet tea, all soft drink are $1 now.
I almost never drink soda.
"No ice, please." Problem solved.
@IsaakHunt local beverages rock. I love to go get locally made root beer. Very good.
I love these informative videos. I find them quite interesting
In Illinois, all drinks, any size small-large at McDonalds are only $1
Hey Jack, what's your daytime job or is this channel your full-time job?
Carl's Jr = Western bacon cheeseburger and Santa fe chicken...Soooo goood!
I always ask for no ice when they fill the cup. I usually just get the dollar size pop and refill it. The point I want to make, though is that soda sales are a huge profit for restaurants. $2.14 for a large soda at McDonald's? Holy crap! At the McDonald's around here the large drinks are $1.
It's "sometimes" better to not order sodas? Try, "it's ALWAYS BETTER to not order sodas." They're a huge contributor to obesity. Get iced tea instead, unless it's that McDonald's sweet tea in which case you might as well have two Cokes.
Who else likes the $1 McD's Sweet Teas?
In Washington, at Mcdonalds, they sell any fountain drink, coffee, tea, and any size for $1. So a large Coke price would be the same as a small coke price. I don't know if they have it anywhere else but I know the deal is in Washington because I live here. :]
Here's a fun fact, more ice melts slower than less ice.

This video has been flagged as inappropriate for children.?? I had to confirm m age before watching
I go for no ice when you fill yourself and just have the full cup of soda
Same as for Alberta, Canada but it just might be a 'summer thing' that McDonalds is doing.
There's this channel called everydaydrinkers.tv, and the guy uses a soda stream machine. Yes, it is a cocktail channel, but I think he's done a review on that.
@Rob2OH3Jack I promise more are to come.
i feel mcdonalds had the best value cause i dont want all this ice watering down my drink
Just a guess on my part but I'm betting that their cost on these soda's is about 5 cents. Soda must be the largest profit-maker they have.
Hey Jack i really like your show and playing with food. oh and yeah Carl,s is the place to be. Greetings from overprized Holland :)
I like the taste of fountain soda better. I'm not that worried about money when it comes to food, so I always get a soda in the drive through.
best way to get your monies worth is to get a $1 sweet tea from McDonalds and just fill it with your own soda ( if the machine is self serve and not behind the counter)
In Norway 0,5 liter coke cost ca. $ 2.64 pluss $ 0.18 in container deposit legislation.
3:56 it looks like there is more soda in the Carls .Jr one?
I like your videos, I've been watching them since I didn't have a youtube account.
Jack, I honestly think that it's Carl's Jr. > Taco Bell > McDonalds. The lady cut him off while she was ahead of him? Lol. He’s a clown. I bet if he rear ends someone he says they were in reverse going towards him. Lol
No Pepsi stuff for me! Anyway, Do you think you could do a Soda Stream review? I have been thinking about getting one.
well when you are getting a meal it is more worth it because if you just order a sandwich and fries it costs about the same as a meal (sandwich fries and a drink)
The hell? At the drive in they ask you how you are? Here in Germany you can be happy if you are greeted or if they say goodbye ...
hey is 2023 and i just want to point out that after multiple strokes, jack still doesnt have object permanence.
Favorite Drink : Coke (preferably cherry or vanilla)
Favorite Fast Food Restaurant : (McDonalds)
water is the only element that expands when it freezes so if the ice melts there is less in the cup than if it wouldnt have melted
That's why I go to Circle K before going to Subway, for example. 69 cents for ANY size, even the large. Subway rips you off on soda and the selection is better at Circle K, with Coke and Pepsi products.
