I wouldn't have anything if i had to pay full price. I keep a list of things that we are going to need and I go to yard sales and thrift stores until I find them. My Granny said something years ago when i was a young girl and i have lived by that my whole life. "You can't take it with you when you go, so why stay broke trying to get it". This is slightly off topic, but today has been an absolute illustration of why you need an emergency fund. At 3.55pm my electricity went off, I thought it was a power cut but no…the trip switch had gone on the fuse box and wouldn’t turn back on. I had to call an electrician and now I have some electricity back but it seems it’s a junction box under the kitchen floor and that will have to be taken up tomorrow.
I don’t know how much it will cost but thank goodness I have the money to pay for it.

Frugal living for us is living our best life and be thankful for all that we have, and we aim to pay less for anything that we must have/pay for. We are not only not buying, but we are now selling anything that we have purchased over the years, that we now no longer have a need for it. We donate to a local nursing home, and the local charity shop as well. We have lots more to do, but we have built our savings up by doing it as well. We aim to keep our grocery budget controlled by buying up clearance items and storing them for the future, whether canning, freezing, dehydrating or freeze drying. By doing this we are able to hedge our costs against inflation. And it definitely makes it possible for us to do no spend months, including zero$$ on groceries. You are so spot on with living intentionally. You are correct that that is a huge part of Frugal life, at least here at our house. We live on a fixed income due to retiring early and not having a mountain of savings, but by living frugally, it affords us to travel (also frugally),save money and invest toward our future goals. Having a paid for home, truly gives you a tremendous amount of peace of mind. I am so glad to have found your channel, despite being frugal and living on a budget for decades, I keep learning new things. I appreciate all of the work you two put into this channel. Thank you both.😊

I grew up with frugality as normal, so I guess it is easier to do for me. For those who grew up during the Thatcher years it must be much harder as then credit was made easy and debt no longer a disgrace. I think there is a definite mindset that makes it easier to ignore the adverts trying to make us discontent with our lives. There is a special creativity to be found in making do, mending and searching out good used items. Being intentional also sets us free to be more generous to others, since we know we have enough and can then share with those who struggle.

Hi Jane and Mike. I like the feeling of satisfaction I get when I've upcycled something as opposed to replacing it. Like you, I use everything up and am now wearing the clothes I already have. Being on a water meter, I reuse as much water as possible, especially during the summer months when the plants need watering. Only yesterday I spruced up an old, green plastic garden chair that had faded over time. After reading the tip online, I gave it a good scrub, then with a soft cloth (an old top cut up 😃) applied WD40 all over it. I couldn't believe how it instantly brought back the green colour and the chair now looks like it did years ago. Would never have thought it possible. I now intend to go over the other 3 chairs, which for a while now have been stacked behind my garden shed out of sight. I always have WD40 in the house as it's useful for many things, so it didn't cost me anything and took little time to do. Thank you for sharing your own thoughts. 🤗

I don't explain, because their comment shows where their values are, and mine are different. That is a world view. We cannot change any one else's world view. Learning to be content and happy with what we have is a wonderful place to be. Enough, and enough to share. That is what frugality means to me.

I clean houses and 2 years ago a lady commented that my skirt was faded. I’m still wearing it and will till it’s completely worn out. My shoes are worn till the end too. Some of my furniture is from 30 years ago when I got married. 17 years ago I got divorced and lost some of it. It was replaced by mostly 2nd hand. But being creative allows me to have a really pretty home. It’s my sanctuary. So, I’m definitely not one of the Joneses.

If I can borrow or postpone buying or do without something entirely, I do. I try never to automatically run out and purchase an "emergency" item without exploring my other options first. My old riding mower needed an expensive overhaul this spring. I will repair it eventually but meantime I tidied up my smaller gas powered, walk-behind mower and I do most of my lawn with that. And I have a man who does a little edging and weed whacking on the steeper areas every two or three weeks. I'm saving a lot of money doing most of my own mowing. And not having the repairs done on my riding mower until I have the cash saved up means I won't be charging anything on that project. Also, my 10 year old dishwasher quit a few weeks ago. For now, I'll wash dishes by hand until I have the cash for repairing the old one or buying a new one. It's no big whoop!😂

I live on about 2/3rds of UK minimum wage. I reflected yesterday that we eat like kings! Ham cooked in the slow cooker + broad beans from my friend's allotment + carrots + sweet potato. I used my slow cooker and my 2 layer steamer to cook them. Plenty of ham left over for sandwhiches later in the week. Floowed by raspberries - which were free on my Lidil app. Then i lay down on my garden bench and watched the sunset creep across the sky. Very blessed and content. Tomorrow i shall be taking some pretty embroidery thread ( pence from a charity shop years ago) and sewing a flower over a hole in a favourite teeshirt ( bought years ago from a charity shop) - i shall then embroider other flowers to make it look intentional! I will listen to a podcast or story while doing so. All for free! It seems to me that the non frugal spend their time rushing arround unhappily trying to keep up with the Joneses in terms of clothes, holidays, kitchen gadgets etc etc. Whatever they can compete on instantly by spending money on it. Frugality to me means creative contentment while living a slow, intentional life!

Friends laugh cos despite spending quite a bit I'm still upcycling anything I can get my paws on - insulation off cuts + pallets = insulated compost bins. Floor boards = raised beds, replaced doors & windows = cold frames & possibly a greenhouse. I can't bear them to be wasted! P.

I budget $400 a month for food and most months I have $ left over. The money left over goes back into savings. I have sinking funds for my other bills. I do a monthly budget every month. So far this has worked for me and I don't feel like I'm skimping on quality or being cheap. Can you find ways to stretch the meat in your meals( slightly smaller portions and extra veg. Add a soup before your main meal) if it’s toiletries that seem to cost a lot is there anywhere cheaper you could buy them. I do this about 4 times a year or if the bill seems to have suddenly gone up and I find it helps.

Our furniture is old but very functional so we are happy with that. The shopping has dwindled down to absolute necessities. Groceries and gas and utilities and bills. I'm just grateful that we have enough to cover those things. Thank you for your posts.

Being frugal to me means not constantly worrying about my finances. We cook at home, use everything up, and have a kitchen garden. We used to love thrift stores until they became super popular in our area. It's no longer worth shopping in them when I can find a clearance summer dress for $6 somewhere else.

Frugality has meant a long time of my life "stingynes". I don't want to be one of this stingy people who never spend a penny for other people or a good Quality thing or nice things . But slowly i have changed my mind because i have to look very good to my money if i don't want fail financially.
So a good mindset is the number one priority for me. Because if i now why i have to be frugal i will be frugal😅. I'm still on the way.😊 Thank you for all your Videos. I love especially the videos like this one and all mindeset things.❤

Hello from austria 🤗Yes it's nice to know that there are frugal people world wide. I think ia'm natural frugal and satisfied , my mum always said as a kid i was playing and loving ma old used doll💕 and i was always careful with my pocket money and love wearing and becoming used clothes from friends and family . I think going back to my roots seams to be a god way and trusting my gut feeling and not looking of the other's who don' t life frugal or don't have to be frugal.
I think it's somtimes hard to be frugal and don't be impuls bying , but we can be proud of us when we spend wiseley😍😍

I've always loved the word 'frugal', it gives me such a sense of satisfaction and affirmation of the way I've always prefered, as well as needed, to live: being sensible with money, avoiding debt and waste, making a lot from a little, finding original and creative solutions from what I've got or can get cheaply, enjoying wholesome, simple, inexpensive projects and pursuits, waiting and weighing up and thinking about what I really want and need. I've never made a lot of money or had great ambitions, we took off to France nearly twenty-seven years ago and I waved goodbye to a serious career and the UK property ladder, so I suppose it's making a virtue of necessity, but so what?
Then I discovered Annie Raser Rowland's wonderful book 'The Art of Frugal Hedonism', and it felt like coming home, and also opening a world of joy and possibility, which set me on a search which led me to your channel and many other great resources which I'm still discovering. Long live frugality, vive la frugalité!

i am a frugal person at heart. I am 85 years old and I have done most of the frugal things mentioned, but there is one thing that I didn't see mentioned. My hobbies are all money savers'/; I us quality used material to make items such quilts or blouses. I go at the closing time to garage sales and find quality clothes that I tear apart and remake. I don't buy books to read anymore. I USE THE library. I get free food that the food banks have donated to them that they can not use (they put it out in their parking area for anyone to take) I am able to get dented Number 10 cans for 1 dollar, open and freeze or re-can in smaller portions. I really don't need much to live and I am very happy.

We will have to replace our second hand car at some stage. We never buy new. It makes economic sense to save the difference to trade in of 5K instead of driving it into the ground and needing 20K to pay for a second hand car totally if we drove ours until it was worthless.

Being frugal for me is not buying into constant consumerism and leaving something for future generations behind instead, we are producing so many unwanted items and long-term from ecomic models, to environmental issues to constant debt chasing and devaluation of what you can buy for your buck,it is not sustainable. I got really frugal when i worked in wholesale fashion and saw the mark up of goods bought by 200 to 300%, none of this went back to the people who worked hard at producing it, very little went to business maintence, innovation or staff and i was no longer prepared to buy items at full price where not absolutely necessary because it did not reward all in the chain equally and sufficiently. Being frugal has given me the chance to have an overall better quality of life for me andmy family often during very challenging times and also to pass on things and advice to others. I love the aspect of sharing frugal people run not on one winner gets it all, but there is always enough to share from items, recipes, tips - it is a lovely community. ❤

Frugality is a result of recognizing the blessings I have in life and being respectful of them. I have been very fortunate and I am grateful. Frivolous behavior, and squandering of resources shows such disregard. Being able to be frugal lets me live the life that is important to me.

  • @charlotterice7418

Frugality is about having gratitude for what I have. It's about looking after what I have, the majority of which is second hand. It's the ability to look at the futility of the consumerist cycle and breathe a sign of relief that it doesn't affect me.
I want to tread as lightly as I can on this planet.
And I want to make a.life that suits me eg work part time if I choose because I am not weighed down by debt.
    Frugality is acceptance and peace

Frugal living to me NOW is something that makes sense to me that I never thought of before in the past one ☝🏾 major thing was wasting food this may sound crazy but in the past I would never look at something as basic as a hot dog bun after a cookout to eat it for anything other than a hot dog now I have used hot dog buns for breakfast the next morning as French toast or using buns to make grilled cheese with tomato soup for lunch I know crazy right but it’s true for me now I look at food old clothes old decor and everything really I can see it used in different ways 🙏🏾 this has been a game changer for me and I thank this channel for helping me along the way ❤❤❤❤

Living frugally for me means not participating in the rampant consumerism that surrounds us. I, like you, am happy to wear my clothes until they wear out. I never feel I
must buy something new just because the seaon changes. Most of my furniture is second hand & that's fine. It is also true that contentment with what you have
is important. Constantly yearning for things you can't afford is not helpful.

I think the word contentment best describes my frugal philosophy. I'm 62 and disabled for 10 years now. I am happy with my 1100 square foot, paid off house! When working, I dreaded the comparisons (mostly women) made in my office to houses, cars, clothes, trips etc. I am happy having my little house, my 3 senior dogs and my few close, longtime friends.
I haven't had to touch my retirement savings yetband I am very happy about that since I lost 15 years of working and saving time. That was one of my biggest worries but I am doing okay.
Hello to the cute pups and ofncoursento you, Jane and Mike!

Being Frugal to me is just a great conversation piece, I love to share what I paid or didn't pay for something, this really interests people, then just brag about what I did with it or how much I sold it for then I go on to brag about my $3,500 day at my garage sale, its all silly fun to me, the conversation is always light hearted and fun. I always get asked, have you ever got in a dumpster?

You look very nice in Navy with the scarf, very nice. About 90% of everything I own in my home or wear is thrifted, used, etc. Probably tools, lawnmowers, chainsaws, farm equipment are the only things we tend to buy brand new. Budgeting and being intentional with spending is the key. We are at the point in our lives where experiences are more important to us than things and that's what I try to spend my money on.
