I did a ride along during the day. His beat was mostly residential. We spent a lot of time responding to false alarms. We had one hot run (lights and siren). He went full speed between to cars. He cleared the car on my side by about four inches.

You definitely see more action as a city cop, but being a rural cop has its own dangers, like this right here. Imagine if the backup officer was 5 minutes further out, or was on another call.
Yeah city cops mostly are dealing with homeless people and drug addicts causing commotion. Most major cities have owning guns illegal anymore especially carrying. Rural cops definitely have a scarier job with less funding and resources

I started out as a deputy dog and eventually moved on to the city. The city kind of boring because my beat zone was about four blocks, and I and seldom allowed to step out. With the sheriffs department, I could occasionally go anywhere in the county. I found myself on back roads in the forest near lakes in the mountains and over the hills. Never did worry too much about being out there by myself. For any of your young folks thinking of going into law-enforcement, being a deputy gives you a lot more freedom than being tethered in a city. 🤷♂️

The Chief of Police in Sebeka, Ty Lane, used to hang out at my house every waking moment of the day when he was growing up. Ironically, his wife, Amy Lane, who used to be a Wadena County Investigator is now the Police Chief of Menagha which is the next town north of Sebeka LOL.

I had one like this years ago in rural Canada. My partner on shift was on his way to a different town. I heard him use the emergency code on my radio. Only by luck because we were the only ones on that channel in those days. I knew where he was going and headed out lights and siren while calling for him on the radio. He didn't answer so I go on the trunk channel and called for the neighbouring detachments to help me look for him. I found him at the sene of a traffic stop alive and on his back in the middle of the highway fighting with a heavy male who was on top of him. I ran in shouting police stop and he said he was cross comtaminated. Fearing he was going to be greviously injured or killed, I put my baton across the suspect's windpipe and pulled him off. Held him long enough that he was running out of air and starting to pass out. Some quick handcuffing and a search and stuffed him in the PC. Helped my partner out of the road and as he was explaining how he got back sprayed with the OC spray, a truck came up behind us. Keep in mind, in this part of Canada, you might see three cars a night on that highway in the fall. The driver got out and was agressively trying to get to the police car where I had the suspect. He kept asking who we had arrested. Of course, he knew because it was his brother. After physically pushing him away and threatening to arrest him too, he backed off. I can only imagine what would have happened if he got there before me and found his brother on top of my partner who couldn't see because of the spray. Moral of the story for bad guys, don't $uck with the Mounted. A bullet to the head is quck and you won't feel it. Slowly strangled with a baton in a windpipe choke is 45 seconds of pain and panic.

I had my teenage daughter on a ride-along on Take Your Daughter to Work Day. There was a pursuit going on the radio and my daughter asked if we can go to that. I told her that I didn't think that would be a good idea.
@@troyswink5435 They pulled the guy over because they had notes that he "didn't like police". They followed this guy and his brother in an attempt to assault and kidnap them. When they tried to defend themselves they were killed.
This reminded me of the West Memphis shootout in 2010. In both, the two officers had their backs turned when someone started firing at them and the shooters were sovereign citizens.

Not gonna lie, I would’ve called for backup the second the first guy turned his car around completely in front of the officer’s. It was obvious at that point that he was boxing him in and something was up. I’m surprised an 11yr veteran didn’t sense that sooner
Contrary to popular belief, cops do not deal with crazy criminals every single day of their careers. That and many cops do not have the best survival instincts. They seem to be under the impression that all their gear and tools are a form of invincibility, so they let their guard down pretty easily. I've read stories of cops showing up to situations where they KNOW someone was armed and dangerous, and while they're just nonchalantly talking to the victim(s), they get ambushed, and don't even see it coming. You'd think they'd be a little more on guard given the nature of emergency calls like that.
