For #1 I actually intentionally cut low end on most channels and then gradually introduce it once the rest of the mix gets full to balance it all out. I’m definitely guilty of #2 on the vocals as we’ve already established 😂 But for synths I usually tame it down with a multiband on individual leads and then reintroduce with a saturator on a bus Can’t really comment on #3, I’m usually pretty happy with my loudness levels #4, from what I noticed, for most people break gets loud because of over-abundance of leads. Keep your breaks fakin’, simple, 7 supersaws won’t give you that Revealed sound. Also cut the volume and the stereo expansion on buildup to make that drop hit hard like your uncle. #5 - listen in good headphones, they help A LOT with understanding low end. People don’t give headphones enough credit
there was something similar a long time ago. It was more about how to master them tho... If you are not patient enough, you can download some free stems of popular songs and see how vocals sound like if there are several vocal audio files.
I have been trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong with my mixing and it's the lack of body or mid in my leads. This was so insanely helpful, thank you so much
Hey zen! Can you make a tutorial on mixing with stems? Is it advisable or not? And how to properly bounce stems in the case where we have a 80-100 channels. Great tutorial btw🙂
Great video with helpful information & tips regarding mixing. I'm busy for a while now trying to improve on my mixing skills. It is not easy. It takes some good practice to get good at it. If the mix is bad, you can't fix it with mastering. Some people think mastering is a miracle session to make the song great, but it isn't. It all depends on the mix. On the other hand, if a track is mixed very well, the mastering engineer won't do a lot to the track in most cases. Maybe you can do a video about mastering. Meanwhile I'm practicing many hours in my DAW to mix (I even drag old songs into it to compare and sometimes improve them) Thanks for uploading, Zen!
Thank you. A tutorial on the proper levels, sample rates, etc, for bouncing audio down without the loss of the presence that is present before bouncing the vst to audio would be VERY helpful.
Regarding #3, most reference tracks that are hot at the moment, will be limited AF :D like tracks from Brooks, Martin Garrix or Mike Williams - they are usually around -5.5 to -6 LUFS in the drop, which is just pushing loudness to the absolute limits before it becomes a square wave :D and they (or their master engineers) have to cut much bass from the kick to actually let these loudness levels happen :P
Zen I use other g house tracks for loudness referencing and my LUFS match but they still sound louder... I think its because my EQ and stereo seperation isn't as defined as theirs. Any thoughts?
buss compression, paralell compression, i learnt that mi kick sound 3 times more in the face and heavier and better than before, plus gained 3 lufs while still havi that punch
step number 5 was the issue I had when I tried mixing with Beats Mixr headset :D After I got the HS8's it got a lot better (I test my remixes in a club which really reflects a bad mix)
Hey, Zen great video as ever!!! Wanted to ask a silly and odd thing but really if you could answer it will help a lot. So as I have heard that Mid & hi freq is focused and low frequencies swirl. So would it be convenient if instead of a square/rectangle room, one would make a round room. I mean even I haven't heard about it but still I'm wondering if that can affect the room acoustics.
#3 has also been said by Laidback Luke & Armin Van Buuren, either people should use an invisible limiter or not, as it surely increases the volume but at the same time the song also gets distorted a lot. This was also focused by Deaamau5 that people nowadays increase the gain too much and distorts the shit out of the song.
Can you explain why Volume is important? I would've thought that the only difference between my track being at -10db and at -3db is that one is louder (which the person that listens to it can adjust anyways). But apparently i'm wrong, can you explain why?
You have to leave the volume low when mixing (not the master fader, but literally each track's volume, low) to leave headroom for mastering, when you master you can put maximizers, compression and limiters to increase the volume of your track.
I can really relate to #1 since the headphones I produce with made your example actually not sound as if there was too much low end noticeable. One question though regarding #4: What if my breakdown was as loud as shown in the video, but I would bring down the volume in only the build-up section through a filter or volume automation to make for a short term decrease in energy? Because the difference right before the drop would be the same wouldn't it? Or is that not sufficient enough?
But how do you know if the mix has to much or not enough low end because it sounds different on every speaker system and headphones, sometimes I've had mixes with no low end on monitors and then I add more low end and it's to much in a club
Can someone explain? I dont understand how you can compare a track at mix stage with an already mastered track? Do you just lower the mastered track to match peak dB of your working track or?
In no.3 you mention referencing other tracks, but how do you do that exactly? The source , media player, file type etc can all affect how the referenced track will sound. So how do you get a perfect comparison?
Grant M You can use something like Magic A/B and adjust the volumes to match or just drag a track into your DAW and adjust the volume so that it’s close to yours. Then compare and adjust. There’s so many ways to reference tracks and study them though so get to searching :)
For all producers over here; if you want to know in which frequency range you are you can download NoteFreak on the iPhone for free. It’s a handy tool with all notes and their corresponding frequencies.
Regarding track loudness and headroom, how do you tell if what you’re doing to the mix at a low level is beneficial? Often when I’m mixing I’ll find it too low and then automatically raise the volume
You're a good teacher as always bruh. good video. ❤❤ but i hate Martin garrix mastering they're not actually clean as other artists tracks. like if u listen to high on life & novell.
