  • The idea of a personal carbon footprint was popularized by a large advertising campaign of the fossil fuel company BP in 2005. This piece of propaganda was designed to shift the responsibility of carbon emissions from the company to the public.
📝 Erratum: @3:30 the vertical axis of the graph should read "CO2 concentration" not temperatures, and the voice-over should say "CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is the highest it has ever been in 400,000." Temperature will follow but fortunately, they are not there yet.
In this whiteboard animation, I explain what we mean by carbon footprint (definition), how it is calculated, why we need to reduce it and how to reduce it with lots of examples. I also suggest 3 carbon footprint calculators you can use:
If you are in the United States: coolclimate.org/calculator

My name is Carson and I am also Canadian. My wife and I lived in Edmonton Alberta, Canada. We drove a large pickup truck and ahuge SUV, out home was big with three furnaces. We sold our home and our vehicles, shut down our business and moved to Colombia South America where we have only bicycles, no furnace and no airconditioning as its 23 degrees here every day 365 days a year. We still utilize electricity but here in Colombia its almost 100% hydroelectric. Our food is sourced from a 15 km radius from where we live as that's how they roll down here. We even buy clothing, cookwear and other products that are all made locally. I loved your video and I am excited to see just how much we have reduced our carbon footprint.

So I heard on the radio today that ordering things online, say through Amazon, adds to our personal carbon footprint, which I agree with due to the delivery of the item plus the production of the item etc...but my question is: Does driving to the mall to purchase the item create more or less of a carbon footprint than ordering online and having it delivered? There would be many variables of course, like how far is the mall? How many parcels are delivered on the same truck as your item? etc...but I am curious to see what anyone would have to say about it.

    • @learnsustainability
      @learnsustainability  2 года назад +1

This is a great question and one that highlights the need for a framework to make decisions. My video on the definition of sustainability ruclips.net/video/eec0UYGIeo4/видео.html explains the root causes of un-sustainability and the one on the ABCD method presents ways to approach planning in complex systems ruclips.net/video/J10CAkkAHFQ/видео.html. As you mentioned, there are many variables and not one-size-fits-all solution but once you have the tools to think about it, you can start making good decisions for yourself. Maybe you should avoid fast shipping for instance and make sure you drive to the mall only once to get everything you need (and only what you need) and use the most resource efficient vehicle you can to do so, maybe bring a friend with you who needs to go grab something as well...

There is no reason to feel bad about that, it is only the result of operating in a system where we need energy and the best and most reliable energy so far is in fossil fuels. It will change when we have other alternatives.

Green house gases are by nature supposed to be absorbed by trees and plants to grow. It is only because of an imbalance in nature caused by us where we cut down trees and also burn more fossil fuels that we have this problem. This means we really should be growing more trees and plants and not cutting them down as much as possible. We need to be regenerating a healthy eco-system that is more balanced. Our modern way of life living in the cities is unnatural and resource intensive and also unhealthy. We need to look at how our ancestors lived and strive to live simpler lifestyles that is also close to nature.

A way to recycle human waste into food and drink is needed. Also recycling human bodies into food would help tremendously.

Don't know whether to fight pollution or warming, and they are clearly not the same thing.
If you are concerned about warming, should know that at 70%, the main greenhouse gas is water vapor.
In that hypothesis, both the excessive warming and the release of greenhouse gases are equivalent in a nuclear plant and a coal plant.
On the other hand, the burning of vegetable fuels is neutral in terms of CO2 balance.

Exactly! But this is a mainstream approved “conspiracy theory”. Actually it’s a giant grift. Potentially the most giant grift of all time of people don’t educate themselves.

I am a cynical.... to make batteries you need lithium which is a pain in the arse to find and there basically isn't enough of it for everyone to have an EC. The whole thing is a ball ache. If you forget to charge your phone overnight.... not a big deal, take your charger to work, forget to 'plug' your car in you're fucked! You've got essentially 2 tons of scrap metal on your drive.

Sure! Most batteries are lithium today but many other technologies are being researched and it might not be the case anymore in 10 years from now. I totally agree that EVs have their limitations and that not everybody should start driving one tomorrow. Most grids could not even take it.

carbon offsets in theory work, but in actuality, it's a load of rubbish. you are basically paying companies to promise that they are not going to cut down a tree for a certain time. basically just a way for companies to make money under the premise of acting sustainably

So you have also fallen for the lie created by BP, who coined this phrase years ago, while they hide behind, still responsible for the biggest cause of the footprint, pretending to be the good guys.
Follow the money, selling credits is the biggest scam as well.

I totally agree that BP created the concept of carbon footprint and this is in the description as I forgot to mention it in the video. This video is intended to explain the concept to people who are new to it and search it on RUclips or Google.
