I decided to film this trip in a slightly different style. Not so much of my face right up to the camera. More of the camera to the side as I talk through my thought process leading up to the image. What do you think? I’d love your feedback!
Thanks Andrew for reminding us of all that can go wrong so that we can be more prepared - I also have had all the wrong settings on my camera at a critical moment and then wasted precious time changing them. All of this is a good reminder that it's OK if you don't get the exact shot that you want, this is all part of the process for all landscape photographers...things don't always go as planned. The wonderful thing about landscape photography is that even if you don't get the shot, its always a JOY just to be out in nature.
Thanks Valerie, you are absolutely right. Things won't all go to plan all of the time and when they don't we just have to step back and enjoy the moment (that's why we are out there) and walk away learning from the experience. The joy of being outdoors and witnessing nature is always going to there and therefore make any trip worthwhile. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment.
Thanks Denise, haha, yes if you are familiar with the Sugarloaf Rock that drive down the road towards the carpark would get any photographer excited, such a beautiful location. Thanks for your comment.
It's amazing how you get into a stride and being out of the game for a few month is bound to take its toll. The results look pretty good to me Andrew. Thanks for sharing! Stay safe.
Thanks for that Steve, yeah I was amazed how rusty I felt. Just goes to show it's always good to stay in practise and shoot regularly (or as regularly as we can). 😀
Thanks for that Craig, Sugarloaf Rock is a great location. So many options for compositions, with the odd challenge thrown in, even if it was self-inflicted this time! 🤨
Hi Andrew 🧔 I am really happy to see your video again. Thank you for sharing. You can always capture such a beautiful scenery perfectly. You are a powerful photographer. I will always look forward to your next video, always looking forward to every week. stay safe. 🙋🏻♂️
Wonderful video Andrew...love that location! I made a quick photo stop back there in 2010 when I was vacationing in WA from the US. Although I captured a photo...it wasn't at the best time of the day! Take care and look forward to your next video!
Been there - done that. One of the things I hate is when I accidentally kick my tripod leg just before the decisive moment. Wow Andrew, your are making that Z7 "sing". Thanks.
Haha cheers Robert, it's good to get everyone's feedback about also forgetting gearing. At the time I felt I was the only one who does it, but from the comments I'm certainly not alone. Thanks for for kind words about the images mate! 👍
love this vlog this is how exctited and how much we rush to take photos and we forget all sorts .thank you for including it we are all human how ever far up the ladder we grow nice to see reality good stuff andrew
Thanks very much Mark, Haha yeah, it sometimes difficult to keep your cool and stay calm and relaxed with you've got light and colour going off everywhere, waves crashing and the sun setting. It's all part of the fun! 😊 Thanks for your comment!
I like your new style of filming, not that I didn't like your previous method. I live in Perth, & Dunsborough to Margret River is also my favourite part of the world. The comment I wanted to make was that I prefer the composition of your first image.
Cheers Matt, saw you were up in the Wandoo Woodlands over the weekend, we was up there as well, but didn't run into you. Hope you had a great weekend up there.
What a great video Andrew ! I really enjoyed what you were talking about, which is so true. When you’re rushed, everything seems to fly out the window and you forget things. I think every one of us have experienced exactly what you went through as well. I’ll never forget leaving my filters on the kitchen table !!!! 🚐
Glad you enjoyed it Greg. Haha, while frustrated with my forgetfulness at the time, it funny to look make on. I think it's helpful to share this as all of us do it from time to time. Thanks for watching and leaving your comment mate!
Really liked the new format, I must get back to WA. That is a stunning place, sorry I missed it the 1st trip. I went out the other morning to do a Sunrise shoot and was all fingers and toes so know how you felt, after being self isolated and having treatment for 8 months it was like starting all over again. Always enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing.
Loved the b-roll intro Andrew and although you seemed to battling there, still great to see your final images none the less. Lost count the number of times I’ve starting shooting only to realise I’ve got the previous setting dialled in. When I get home and take the memory card out to load my images on the computer, I try and reset the camera back to base settings to avoid that moment the next time
This episode is so familiar in regard to how you felt and forgetting your tripod. I have done the same thing except the tripod was in my home studio (1.5hrs drive away)LOL! RE be ing ready... I routinely reset my camera settings to a default setup before I leave home, that helps me not to get things out of synch when in the moment. It doesn't always work though if I'm rushing, that never ends well, unlike your final image. Hope to get over to WA again when the pandemic is over. Love the reality you demonstrate. Cheers.
Thanks Phil, I've forgotten gear which has been left in the car or at home more often than I'd like to to admit. 🤪 I can remember leaving my filter at home for one trip, which made things challenging. Great tip on resetting the camera, thanks for sharing. Having things setup for the intended style of photography is definitely an advantage. I'm still trying to work out when things will get back to normal, cheers!
Thanks for your comment Shane. I had some feedback that people would like me to sometimes reflect on the shoot and talk through my thoughts of how it went. I thought it was a good idea to sometime add at the end of some of the videos. What you can guarantee is I'll always be honest, which mean it wouldn't always be pretty. 😊 Cheers mate!
Haha, yeah with the vlogging gear I have two tripods to worry about. I was focused of the vlogging tripod for the walk down from the car and didn't think about the stills tripod until I arrived at the spot to set up. Too many things going on in my head! 🤪
Having seen the title and forgetting the tripod I was half expecting you to get wet as well sitting comfortably on the rock! I liked the format and I know you were pressed for time but I did miss seeing what you were talking about until you’d taken the shot. Cheers mate.
Hi Brian, thanks for the feedback. You're right, I did have time to capture the other b-roll footage I normally do. I realised that when I was editing the video together. I think in the future, I'll combine the two approaches if I can, so there's footage of the scene included as well.
Wow you really had an interesting adventure there Andrew .. I loved the footage from inside the car .. really nice edits also. I enjoyed the very real way in which you presented the video. That's what often happens, we make mistakes or forget important pieces of equipment. I made that mistake recently. I wanted to shoot a day to night timelapse and after climbing a mountain only to find I left my intervalometer in the car ..!!!
Cheers Richard, the inside car footage was the new set up you help me with! 👍 Glad you enjoyed the slightly different style, something I was playing around with. At least I hadn't climbed a mountain although at the time it felt like it. Unfortunately I've forgotten stuff in the car more often than I'd like to admit, cheers mate!
Beautiful seascape. Great work as always. It seems so easy when I see you working on a coast but in " my world " things are not that way. I feel I should have more than just two hands. The camera, the tripod, the backpack, filters, lenses, the light changes... I forgot the remote... let's calculate the exposure time...start to feel stressed. I think to myself I Need more practice, maybe next time...
Like old times Andrew. I like the "old style" a bit more given this one was a bit on the darker side. Good to see you out and about again. Stay safe and well.
Thanks Miguel, great to hear from you. Thanks for your comment, I'll take on that feedback, you're right it was a little dark, I was expecting it to catch more of the sunlight on the rocks as the sun set however. the open sky behind meant the footage was going the under exposed. Good to experience, all good! Stay safe mate!
Thanks Glyn, haha I forget the tripod more times than I'd like to admit. I could use the fact that I am filming but if I'm honest I was leaving the tripod in the car even before I start YT. I've found that if it isn't attached to the camera bag, there more of a chance I leave it behind. 😂
Andrew Marr haha I was in London and on my way to shoot the Tower Bridge. When on the train I looked at my tripod that had no ball head....I’d removed it for travelling and missed reattaching it. I got the shot by luckily finding the wall by the bridge was flat but I had to prop some stuff under my lens to get the right perspective. It worked but if not I would have travelled over one hour and not got the shot.
When I saw you walking out to the rock the first time, I thought ‘where’s his tripod’??? I was looking for it attached to your backpack. Despite the difficulties, you captured some amazing images in true Andrew Marr style. Being from WA, I’ve captured that iconic rock a few times. Christian Fletcher has made it famous. Love that area.
Hi Glenda, where were you when I needed the reminder, haha. Thanks for the feedback on the images. It is a beautiful location and one I don't think I'll every get tired of. Christian Fletcher has done an great job putting this location on the map.
I try and get down to Sugarloaf Rock at least once a year. There's always a new composition to discover. Hope you a staying safe over in Vic, tings looks like they are tightening down even more this week.
Andrew Marr yes, staying home, staying safe. Another lockdown stage 4, until mid Sept. seeing your trips down my beloved WA coast helps lift the spirits.
Such a great location for seascapes Andrew, love it especially the red Granite and also when the ocean allows you to get right down to sea level, I've been a few times and the waves were huge coming in off the ocean and with Canal Rocks having its bridge smashed recently you'll know what I mean! but in those conditions, you get the drama. I liked the calmness of your images obviously after the headless chicken moments leading up to it! 😉Good onya for keeping that in tho' bro keeping it real. Thanks for sharing Andrew look forward to the next one. Regards Carl
Hi Carl, the lines and patterns in the red granite is a tell tail sign I'm in the southwest and a shot isn't too far away, so it's time to get the camera out (and the tripod 😒) I can't remember visiting Sugarloaf with such calm seas, so it was good to take advantage and get close to the water. I saw the damage out at Canal Rocks, the force of that water was incredible. I'm glad you liked the final images, it good when the images capture the scene of the landscape, and not necessarily the dramatic scene the photographer makes after forgetting gear 🤨 I appreciate the feedback, thanks so much for your comment mate!
nice to see sugarloaf rock, went to see it on my first trip to aus in 04 :o} just ha a little point and shoot olympus c3030z with me at the time (could not see the screen to alter setings + no tripod & on sister in law whistle stop tour)
Hi Andrew, at 14:36 the LED screen on the back of the camera is visible. The camera also has the Lee filter at an angle, sloping to reduce light on the right side. Is the filter positioned at the same slant as the top of the rock or lower down so that the entire sugarloaf rock is within the filtered area? I always struggle when deciding filter positions when the main subject, which is typically in shadow, is then darkened!
I have rushed to get to a particular sunset location. Used the very limited amount of time to adjust all the settings and make sure the camera and tripod are perfectly level. Just as the "moment" appears in front of me, I inadvertently kick the tripod. 🤬🤬🤬
I decided to film this trip in a slightly different style. Not so much of my face right up to the camera. More of the camera to the side as I talk through my thought process leading up to the image. What do you think? I’d love your feedback!
I think it’s great Andrew, also amazing video as always and stunning captures!
Cheers Steven, glad you enjoyed the different style mate! I'm thinking of including more of this style in some of the future videos.
Was a good way to view the story. The distance helped to show some of the effort needed to get the composition and setup. Thanks Andrew
I thought the new format was refreshing, honest and showed the reality of landscape photography in a great way. Loved it, warts and all.
I also like that style when you just set the video up and talk through the session.
Awesome stuff Andrew. The reality of photography and videography
Thanks Andrew for reminding us of all that can go wrong so that we can be more prepared - I also have had all the wrong settings on my camera at a critical moment and then wasted precious time changing them. Beautiful! So good to see much loved familiar roads and sights. I also enjoy the thinking you share as you take the images.
Thanks Denise, haha, yes if you are familiar with the Sugarloaf Rock that drive down the road towards the carpark would get any photographer excited, such a beautiful location. Thanks for your comment.

Gorgeous image, love the sky. Like the new format.
Cheers Ozi, I was really pleased with the colours in the sky, thanks for the feedback on the new format.
Great location Andrew - challenging shoot but worth it! Well done!
Thanks for that Craig, Sugarloaf Rock is a great location. So many options for compositions, with the odd challenge thrown in, even if it was self-inflicted this time! 🤨

Cheers Rod, we are lucky the have such a gorgeous region just on our backdoor. Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your feedback on the images. 👍
That's a fantastic location, really enjoyed your vlog and you got a great image of the rocks 👍
Thanks so much Chris, appreciate you leaving a comment mate. Glad you enjoyed the video and images! 👍
Thoroughly enjoyed this Andrew.
Cheers Matt, saw you were up in the Wandoo Woodlands over the weekend, we was up there as well, but didn't run into you. Hope you had a great weekend up there.
Andrew Marr oh nice mate, would’ve been nice to bump into each other, next time. It’s a great spot up there isn’t it!
Great Job. ❤️
Thank you Guanaco! 😊 Thanks for your comment.

YEAH THE LOAF! I enjoyed your story telling here Andrew, it flowed really well and really captured the adventure!
Nice job, and a good lesson on keeping up your chops when you’ve taken a break. I miss WA!
Thanks Emile, I saw you were out on the boat a day or two ago. Good to see you out and about mate, stay safe! 👍

Andrew Marr , yes we are all waiting, a while to go yet though. Keeping it local.
You "mea culpa" sounds like me - all the time! :-)
Thanks for your frankness Andrew. You still came away with a couple of wall-worthy shots!
Lol I have forgot my tripod twice. Easy to do when you got other stuff to gather for vlogging.
Haha, yeah with the vlogging gear I have two tripods to worry about. I was focused of the vlogging tripod for the walk down from the car and didn't think about the stills tripod until I arrived at the spot to set up. Too many things going on in my head! 🤪

Thanks so much, it had been a while since my last visit as well. So good to get down there again, cheers 👍

Great video Andrew and just goes to show we are all the same. You though have the added issue of filming. For me the images are very good

Glad you enjoyed it Brian!
Nice video, like the style. If I had a pound for everytime I have to go back to my car I would be a lot richer
Would be nice to stay there another night and practice the composition etc. We will be rusty after our lockdown in Vic.
I try and get down to Sugarloaf Rock at least once a year. There's always a new composition to discover. Hope you a staying safe over in Vic, tings looks like they are tightening down even more this week.

Nice work Andrew! Whats the antenna for on the front of the vehicle?
Thank for your comment and question. The antenna is for the UHF which you can see me use in the next video.
@@Andrew_marr Ham radio guy?
I have rushed to get to a particular sunset location. Used the very limited amount of time to adjust all the settings and make sure the camera and tripod are perfectly level. Just as the "moment" appears in front of me, I inadvertently kick the tripod. 🤬🤬🤬
