I found that beating Rome with Ardiaei in legendary difficulty level is the quite top challenge ever could be in vanilla. The taste of getting kicked back from the door of Rome by hastati again and again... oh man. Actually I've never rushed from the start with merc. options but the economy and the faction's trait about the merc. upkeep costs could make sieges impossible to afford. Stabilizing balkans and gaining by the process quickly is crucial but more than everthing, it needs luck to survive. A strong fleet costs much, true, however, romans will try to cross the sea and some ballista carriers can just destroy the legions before they stand on actual ground. Also these ballista sailors will be useful along the coastal sieges whilst you try to approach the mainland of Italy. Great, great challenge!
I think this video sums up the main issue with Rome 2, and that's how hollow it feels. Legend is playing as a Balkan tribe but it doesn't feel any different to playing Rome. The UI is pretty much the same, the game mechanics are so inflexible that the best way to play is just to expand wide. There's 0 point in roleplaying and raiding stuff as supposedly a tribal people, you just end up playing like Rome every single game but with a worse and different unit roster. All the champions do the same thing, not to mention the Politics menu is the same for them all. Whilst the game graphically looks nice in certain aspects the absolutely generic and disgusting 3D portraits means I don't know who any of my generals bloody are. The fact you can just auto resolve spam your way to taking Rome as a Balkan tribe (no disrespect to Legend) is exactly why this game feels like this weird empty husk, albeit a graphically pretty one when compared to the soulful Rome 1, which has a much better soundtrack to this day I might add.
Not entirely relevant to the video, just felt like ranting at the current state of CA and their game design! Thank you.
but most important is the rome 1 speech damn i Iove the speechs ist make so much Iiving to the battIe :/
Yeah, this is something I've been noticing playing Attila recently as the Picts. The whole faction does have some serious bonuses to raiding, rather than expanding and conquering traditionally, even coming with a unique building chain to facilitate it (you establish a beachead province in a region building up a raiding camp chain, then raid in the nearby provinces at increased bonuses for max raiding income). But their conditions for winning are the same as always - you need to take and hold 25, then 40 then 55 provinces to win. Which rather defeats the purpose of forming a relatively small and more accurate empire territory that is this raiding terror like they should probably be.
But there are often pretty fundamental differences in unit rosters and building chains by Attila at least. In Rome 2 it's less differentiated unfortunately. They got better at that aspect over time.
That's why i only play Rome 2 with DEI now. It makes in my opinion the game the best TW ever. Manpower system, specific class of population needed to recruit units, supply mechanics, amazing historical accuracy, better trade, crazy amount of ressources with thier own dedicaded building, higher difficulty, better AI, etc... And if you add the Rome 1 soundtrack mod... i can assure you that you have hell of a fun.
@@monaaa5178 which is what I did...Rome II DEI= best game ever
This might sound contradictory but I have tried DEI and I really do not enjoy it. It feels far too slow in my opinion. Whilst Rome I is much better than Rome II Rome I is still rather fast paced. In Rome 1 you can conquer very quickly, and armies move relatively fast. Units can actually shatter rather quickly if they begin to lose along the front line. I prefer the soul and feel of Rome 1, but I also like its pacing. Rome II with DEI feels like a weird amalgamation to me. You have the souless husk of Rome II attempting to be ressurected by the gameplay changes of DEI and I personally think it does not work for the following reasons:
DEI's unit cards. I think they look disgusting, I quite like the marble antiquity look of the Rome 2 unit cards so I will give them credit there! I also think the UI design and linguistic changes to the factions of DEI feels a bit unnatural and a bit of an eyesore.
The gameplay: As I argued above it is too slow for my preference. When I play a Total War I want to feel as a powerful general crushing my armies against an opponent. I would argue DEI fails not because of its own flaws, but CA's awful AI. DEI's gameplay changes feel unnatural as they artifically prop up the AI to be more aggressive, or recieve greater buffs. I do not blame the DEI developers but the point is no matter how you polish it the AI and Diplomacy in the games is so shallow. Rome 2 vanilla is like beating up someone who is mentally deficient as it is so easy to predict what the AI will do, or just to abuse its stupidity to win. The most fun part of a Total War Campaign tends to be the beginning due to the initial challenge before a steamroll. The issue with DEI is it tries to maintain this by making everything slower, but I argue it just delays the inevitable. Even if it takes far longer to get to in DEI you end up to the point where you begin to steamroll the AI, and if you do not it is only due to artificial constraints, not genuinely competent AI.
As a side note DEI also massively increases turn times for me, in addition to how everything takes longer to do it becomes a 'sloggy' experience, one I do not enjoy.
TLDR: I dislike DEI as it makes the game too slow, and I don't like some of its design decisions. It also fails (not by their own fault) to make the game genuinely anymore challenging and feels like an artifical slog-fest at times.
If you like DEI - All power to you! I am glad a mod can make the game enjoyable for you again, it just doesn't do it for me!
Thank you.
Legend you're spoiling us europeans. No late night session today :D
Ardiaei are hard enough on Normal, i couldnt imagine playing them on Legendary lol
Legend doing these clips is the most awsome thing I have ever seen.
Relaxing, and educational. You've really found your niche with this series!
33:45 Close your mouth, Carthage lol
The Legend spear crap stack autoresolves to victory once again!
Illyrians were pretty good idk why they keep making them look weak.
They were good by what metric? They were largely irrelevant cities with no order and a bunch of gangs. The only ended up colonized by Rome because they wouldnt knock it off with the pirate stuff. They were good compared to merchent ships and villages being raided but not compared to any neighboring military power
ahhh yes, my anti-depressant..
What video games do you enjoy most in your free time?
Looks like Legend 's Epirus Campaign ..
Woo Legend!
Rome 1 > Rome 2 don't @ me
@Dat Mex Boi didnt played any of those but Rome2 Graphics look way better :))
no ones gonna @ you about that one.
@nopinkcreations Rome 2 is that one fucking downy kid of the series.
nah
rome 2 is great
Legend, can you make a video discussing the versions of TW that are out and and what you think of them? I cant find one I like over MTW2, but I'd like something new to play.
there is only 5 good ones in my estimation. shogun 1+2 medieval 1+2 and rome 1. empire is a guilty pleasure of mines because it is so unique but i am willing to admit that the ai is terrible even by total war standards. some people say warhammer is good but i dont
You can play a mod that changes Rome 2 into Rome 1 factions. You can play as the Senate, ally with houses Julii, Scipii and brutii like Rome 1, its really fun.
There's also a mod that lets you play as Alexander the great with Macedon and you can recreate his empire yourself.
@@paulb6805 most mods for new total wars are terrible as the base game does not allow for total conversions because of locked factions behind dlc. best historical tw mod is roma surrectum 3 for rome 1 and best fantasy mod is call of warhammer beginning of the end times for mtw 2. iv played pretty much every total conversion mod ever made and these 2 stand head and shoulders above the rest
@@misterx8934 both are fairly unstable in my experience. both require insanely high clock speeds on multicore and 4 gb patch to run somewhat correctly. eb is probably slightly more stable but the sheer variety of units in roma surrectum gives it the title of best historical mod in my estimation. battle maps and units are truly spectacular. music is great too
This just got uploaded as I listen to 'Two Steps From Hell - Final Days of Rome Extended'.
Epic timing indeed. :)
I always use women generals on mt campaigns lol
How can you tell how many units is the enemy recruiting?
Whats does it mean when he said vanilla like im new to this shit so someone enlighten men pleass
this was hardly a disaster
Wow people really go down the other routes than cunning for their generals in Rome II. Never would've thought
How come you don't do warhammer
LoL with this shit faction you could just send the starting position
How do you email a rome 2 campaign?
Email the save file to him
How do you extract it from the game into an email?
CA Ella - *DONT PLAY IT*
As a Greek, one of our national hero is a woman general and in most of wars and revolutions women fought bravely as soldiers, resistance fighters and revolutionaries. My own grand-grandmother beat a nazi soldier after he stabbed a pregnant woman. I'm not saying every ancient civilization had women fighters but in Greece it was not that unlikely. I don't get why people get so triggered every time they see a female soldier in video games.
Because "Waaa I saw a woman doing something better than me now my penis is going to drop off, pick up a knife and stab me waaaaaaaaaa" or something. Idk how twatbro logic works.

TBH i belive you're wrong. Female characters are all over video games nowdays. Let's not forget that one of the most successful franchises (Tomb Rider) has a female protagonist. It's mostly because people belive that the socialism agenda is leaving it's marks everywhere. And tbh i also do belive so Rome 2 included. Teuta wich is the female in the thumbnail was the queen of the Illyrian tribe Ardians. I am from Albania so i know quite a bit about the Illyrians. Yet she was the only documented female leader in Illyria( on top of that she ruled for only 4 years), but the game simulates 15-50% chance of having a female leader wich is kind of inaccurate and it does feel political. Not even considering black/asian generals. I hope anyway it remains this way. I do not want to see Julius Caesar become a black woman in the future for the sake of diversity.
Because they were added to factions that didn't historically have female leaders, it's not that deep, y'all.
A.S Potamianos in Greece it was highly unlikely. Most of the Greek factions in Rome 2 don’t even have the option to have female generals and leaders. Athens, the bastion of Ancient Greek culture, was extremely exclusive in who could vote and who could rule, and only men could be generals or judges or hold other positions of authority. The Spartans were the most equitable of the Ancient Greeks in terms of gender, and women were exclusively restrained to domestic matters. Two of the most prominent Greek women in ancient history were Cleopatra and the empress Theodora, if you even want to consider these women “Greek.” It was a different time with different values and customs. Some people think a historical simulation should reflect that, some people want to sell more games to women.
Because of deeply seated insecurities mixed with reactionary politics.
LEGEND!! When you reach 100000 ssubs! You have to make horse sandwiches for everyone! It'll be delicious.
edit: forgot a zero
Fight a battle once and a while will ya. Just because autoresolve is often the best strategic option, you easily could've manually assaulted Rome on normal difficulty.
40:31 Legend its your future wifey
Already married. Don't need another wife.
maybe totaI war campaign are easy or maybe our modern tatics are so good that we beat the anciet tatics and we thinks ist easy but we just better generaIs
eu gosto de fazer um roIepIay
not a disaster tho
Play some Rome I? X^D
Oi look m8 it’s one of those racists! But really, good to see you man. Seen the trailer for Vampire Coast?
I like Legend's response to female generals. Anti-SJW crowd should take a page from him.
no they shouldn't
People don't care about women being in video games. been plenty in games since forever.. However, people like good characters, female included.. what they don't like is feeling as though it is being forced into the game.. like the only reason women are there is simply because "there HAS TO BE women in this.. IDC how, but get them in there." honestly I consider it lazy and disrespectful to women in video games.. instead of getting good flushed out characters you get trash.. That being said, I didn't even care about seeing women generals in Rome 2. I read the patch notes, looked up some history and thought. "Ok, this works out decently.." But I didn't lie how CA responded to their fans.. It was pretty insulting, considering we are the ones who pay their bills.
GET THAT 100K SUBS BITCH!
Ardiaei tribe🦅🇦🇱
Unrelated, but do you consider modern Romanians to be descendant from Dacians?
wtf is this shit lol, going straight for rome is a viable option, but what did he do? lol, i think is very easy to fix this campaign
first comment! keep these series up legend :D
It's in his channel comment rules not to comment "first". You're pathetic.
Don't mind woman generals but by GOD... their voice lines are just terrible and max level cringe
I've literally just played 3 hours of Rome total war 1: darth mod, having a blast of a time conquering gaul as the julii. What a fantastic game RTW1 is. About 1000 times better than RTW2 - this is one ugly mess of a game! Ugly animations, portraits, irritating intrigue system, arcade-y empty battles and of course disgusting RNG combat. It still baffles me how despite having a decades worth of new tech at its disposal, this sequel manages to be worse than the original in every way!
Why all the autoresolve
Standart strategy because CA doesn t fix that. Has been working since at least medieval 2, maybe even rome:tw. Also since it obviously was not a disaster and not even on hard-mode.
Dr. No has not been standard strategy since rome 1 or medieval 2. Autoresolve on those games is notorious for screwing you in phenomenal and exciting new ways each time you try.
Marcelo Henrique Soares da Silva it’s faster, and it’s more efficient. CA have made it more interesting and more effective to autoresolve and they begin to wonder why people don’t actually play the battles
I don't know if it's about the chosen game difficulty or anything, but even in Rome 1 and Medieval 2, if my commander has enough stars I usually autoresolve even the bigger battles in those games as well, it just kills more enemies with less dead allies compared to what I can do (though I'm definitely no Legend tbf)
sozcan no that’s also part of it. In Rome or Med 2, if you killed 85% of the army, it was gone, but now if you miss 10 men from one unit, the entire army basically stays alive and it takes like 3 battles to kill that army if you don’t autoresolve. Annoying af
