- After much debate we've decided to revamp the outside of the camper and paint its crusty white exterior in a more modern grey. Join us as we enter a prison of paint and spend far too long figuring out how to paint the camper. Can we paint ourselves out of this corner? Or will our dreams be crushed under the paint roller?

My dad bought an old boat one year and we spent a whole summer taking it apart, stripping all the paint off all the mahogany, and varnishing the whole thing. It was a long, painstakingly project that just never seemed to end. When it was all done, it looked almost brand new. Watching these videos is reminding me a lot of that project and I can certainly tell you that I can appreciate the work you are doing to disassemble, clean up what has been neglected, and put humpty dumpty back together again. Thanks for sharing these videos and I look forward to the next one.
Mahogany boat?! Wow 🤩 It is grueling and monotonous at times, but we are feeling the sneaky elation of a home stretch in our very near future 💜
@@taraohais.973 it was an old boat that sat in a corn field for 20 years. It was common for them to be made out of teak and mahogany in the 60's. They were absolutely beautiful when restored, but a lot of them fell victim to neglect and dry rot.
Not my boat, but very similar to what we had....

That sounds like an incredible experience to share with your dad. I've been lucky enough to have my dad helping on this project and it's nice to have that time together.
I swear you two have like lizard senses, always manage to sneak a video of them! Camper is looking good, now comes putting it all back together!
Well I always wanted to fly, but I guess lizard senses is a decent superpower too 😂
Our residential blue-tailed skink! It loves to cruise by in the middle of projects 😍😁
Wow! It's coming along nicely! I really like the paint color. You two are doing a great job.
Thanks Catherine!
Thank yooooou!! 😭💜💜💜
So much variety in this episode! Exciting stuff!!
Chris! Thank you from both of us 💜
Haha, loved the opening! Also KITTY!! 😍
That was an awesome rusty west impression!!!
Holy Cow !! the plastic bag idea is genius for the spray paint !!!! I have a 2004 Sunlight and I just purchased this weekend...Just started cleaning up and look forward to watching what you are doing !!!
Aw, awesome! We’d love to see pictures of your progress as well!
Sweet! Let the fun begin 😁 If you're sharing pics or video anywhere let me know, I'd love to see how it cleans up.
Seeing more of the pop up campers ..have always loved this idea. Just didnt work for our deal. I still like the simpler the better
So solar shower for you. I bring our solar shower and will use it for dishes too. Were not as energy efficient as your out fit ..but love the freedom of staying out for a couple weeks at a time . As long as the feed n water last for the horses. Enjoying your reno journey always get ideas from others projects. Thanks for videoing🤠
I love you both so much.
We love yewwwwwww!!
Impressive Rusty impression
Nice video. Killer tunes.
you two are doing a great job
Thanks Tom!
Love that color scheme!
Manual water pump? Heck yeah, keep it simple
Simple is best!
Agree !!!!
Great Job! It looks awesome! Mary💕Fred
Have a 1990 Jayco Sportster 7 popup I got 1 mo ago. Thanks for the canvas sealant and aluminum primer tip. Going to do that
Really enjoying this process. You might inspire me to tackle a remodel on my pop up camper myself.
I say go for it! I love having a project work on and this sure has been a project haha.
I vote go for it too! We've started recently as well and while frustrating sometimes it's rewarding for sure.
For you water pump, checkout battery powered water pumps on amazon. Typically used on 5 gallon barrels.
"Because we forgot to take a before shot." Hah! I feel ya. I am looking forward and at the same time, SO not looking forward to painting the camper. Marine 303 works well for vinyl waterproofing as well.
Painting is a beast... but once it is done it sure does feel nice to have a clean looking camper.
Looking great! Nice work.
Thank you!
Loving those camper kitties😻
Looks good. But i liked the door white
about the pump - while human power/simple is always a good principle, you might not ALWAYS want to pump yourself. Is what is getting pumped only for use in the moment? like, when you want to wash a dish in the sink, you want water running? or is it that this pump system would be filling a reservoir or running a shower? And is power consumption really a concern? you have a giant engine with 12v right there.
Have thought about a Foot pump for our camper also.
nice aluminum grey color
sorry, i meant aluminium gray colour
😂
😂😂😂
Such a great job. You guys are Pro-fessional! 😂
Outstanding! Renovation or restoration, I can see tons of thought went into all aspects, better to get it perfect while in "dry dock" I think I see the direction you are going with power since we saw the Jackery teaser (think it was on your Insta) 1K watt? and reducing propane plumbing to just stove 👍 I see more and more van-dwellers going to Diesel heater for Heating. Like as in backpacking I wonder how much weight was shed during this process? Bonus point to Tara for the Hair flip. 😂🤣
She made sure that her hair flip stayed in the final edit 😂 Yup, the Jackery 1000 will be our battery. I've been testing it recently and am very impressed so far. I just finished wiring it into our DC fuse box and it runs the fan and house lights perfectly. The real test will be running the fridge as well. Thanks!
@@BackcountryBanter I bought the same Jackery just as COVID was busting out they had an intro $200 off sale. great choice I love mine, I bought a mini 12v pot for boiling water and a 800w 110 hot plate, haven't purchased the solar yet, we truck tent camp so probably will go suitcase style solar.
Nice! Good to know that it has been working well for you. Is your hot plate an induction burner? I've been considering one for our setup. I still need to research power usage on those though. I have been using the Jackery solarsaga 100w panels and so far I think they are excellent. They fold in half and are very easy to set up. They have a little kickstand to help angle them towards the sun.
@@BackcountryBanter Oops it's 1k watt www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005T0SN0K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
After shopping around and realizing induction would be easier to clean I wish I would have gone that route, not sure if I am going to go with Jackary solar though the saga looks good.
Thank you, Don! Hahah, glad you appreciate the hair flip 😂
Enjoying your camper updates! Into my 3rd week on my Van Conversion. Is there such a thing as camper conversion OCD?? 👍👍✌️
What is name of y'alls helper cat?
Great camper color. Reminds me of my Gossamer Gear pack.
Ok, to get a bit more serious. What a great series. Y'all really made this topic interesting and fun to follow. Can't wait for the next one actually.
Who know a camper rebuild would be so exciting? Must have been the great cast. And the helper cat.
Great idea on the foot pump. Perfectly functional and I bet less pricey too.
There are two helper cats though they look very similar because they are siblings 😁 Ricky (shorter hair) and Lucy (longer hair.) We slept in the camper for the first time last night (in the driveway lol) and Ricky was loving it. He uses the little side doors to get in and out. Thanks so much for the kind words. This series takes a lot of time and hard drive space to edit but it has been a fun process.
Thank you so much, Leo! Makes it fun to have others join us virtually 😁
Awesome guys! What color and brand of paint did you use?
✨💯✨👍
Love the process! I want to go gray on my camper as well. Respectfully speaking, your lady is HOT! 😊👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Watched this a few times. Thanks for making and sharing this video. I have the same camper!
Hey...I was wondering what you used to prep and paint your window 'outers', meaning how did you get white vinyl window edges to be black? What products did you use and how have they held up?
Did you add any kind of clear coat layer to seal the paint?
Where's Mehap going to sleep?
We've got a nice little pull out couch that he can sleep on 😂
@@BackcountryBanter You have a pull out couch in the camper? I meant in the camper. The 3 amigos... Or is it going to br the 2 amigos?
Im still trying to find a camper to renovate!!! People want $4,000 for junk campers
Saying aluminum 'correctly' is a topic of much debate. Here is the final word, from a brit. Skip to minute 14. Specifically, 14:20 in this video. ruclips.net/video/peoAw1mcw60/видео.html
What paint did you use
Now.....have you named your camper?
Not yet! We're waiting to get on the road and learn more about it as a camper 😁 Kind of like getting a trail name.
How did you paint the plastic trim piece around the door window ?
We sanded it a bit and spray painted it with a plastic specific spray paint.
@@BackcountryBanter Thank you !!
What is the weight for one of these campers?
What grit did you sans with?
How did you get the stickers off of your camper. I saw you used some kind of buffer wheel ? Mine are super hard and super stuck.
It's called an eraser wheel and essentially a large rubber eraser that spins on the end of a drill. Here's what we used: amzn.to/3hSGIbC
@@BackcountryBanter So does it take off the paint, or is it a bit less abrasive
@@Jmisslyn It is very similar to a pencil eraser in texture. It doesn't normally take paint off but I did notice that if I pressed it very hard it could wear down thinly painted spots. I'd say so long as you don't apply too much pressure you will safely remove stickers and not harm paint.
I used a heat gun worked very well. That eraser wheel looks interesting.
Curious to know why you got rid of the fridge and don't want the water pump.
Our plan is to run the entire camper off of solar and a 100amp hour battery so our main goal is energy conservation. We will seldom be at established campgrounds with access to power so the less we can use the better. The 3-way fridges that come in these campers (despite being adaptable) are not very efficient on 12v power so we sold that and will be getting a 12v cooler style fridge that should be very power efficient. Same with the water pump. It is a bit power hungry and was pretty overpowered for our needs too. A foot pump will use no power and will give us a nice hands free ability too. It'll likely help us save water as well. In the next episode we will remove that huge AC on the roof and replace it with a DC fan for the same reasoning.
love the video may i ask what paint you used w are looking at redoing our camper
I love that two are following through on your plan. Oof, so much work! However, the camper is looking A+ and still going. You should both be so proud of what you've accomplished. And prolly thank Dad for his input too❤️
😭💜 Thank you, Robin!!
Was there a functional reason for picking that paint or was the choice purely aesthetic? Just curious.
In part it was to coat and protect the camper and any exposed metal screws. I wasn't a fan of the fading white exterior so it was very much for aesthetic reasons too.
Magnificent, gotta say I wasn't sure about grey until I saw you put it on, looks super duper :D
Thanks!
Thank yooou!!
