Great to see a visionary and eminent scientist who has had the privilege of doing science how it is meant to be done. I, however, disagree with him on categorizing research students as third tier or fourth tier. Probably those "third" tier or "fourth" tier students dont have access to as many resources and highly efficient environment that their counterparts in big places like Harvard or Berkeley have where Professors have the resources and vision to manage or run research labs in a manner that motivates and trains talent. Smaller universities are plagued with funding issues and do mediocre research to just publish and sustain labs. Research is a specialized enterprise which has many systemic issues that need to be dealt with so that science and talent should come first and factory of papers should be secondary. We have lost our vision of what and how science is meant to be done and who all should be doing it.

Quite a poor interview - hardly any science discussed!
