My husband and I made a special stop in Soligen to inquire about the Boker knives as he was a collecter. They were so incredibly nice and friendly and welcomed us into their establishment even without an appointment. We talked for several minutes with the head of the company and were allowed to purchase a couple of knives straight from the onsite factory. I loved seeing this video because it reminds me of a wonderful experience in the beautiful country of Germany.
I bought my Boker 111004 folding pocket knife when I was 16 years old back in 1983 from Kmart of all places. I carried it through my Coast Guard career and still carry it today. It has always been my go to pocket knife. Thank you for the history lesson.
When I was a young man in Tennessee, I used to go to the town square in Murfreesboro and hang out with the old men sitting on the bench next to the old Civil War canons. They would whittle all day long on cedar sticks. I asked one of the men one day what he was making. He said, "Im making little sticks out of big ones"! As I sat there, these men were constantly asking the same question of anyone that came up to be around them...What kind of pocket knife do you have? If you didn't pull out a Boker knife from your pocket, you had better not pull anything out of it. It was Boker or trash. Thats where my love for Boker began. This was a sweet video. Thanks
This video is on a whole different level. So interesting! Impressive marketing and fantastic filming and editing. Love the way you used the B film during narration. You can let your supervisor/manager know that your trip to Germany was well worth it because I am buying a knife right now from you guys out of sheer principle. This is marketing done right. I showed this video to my brother in law who isn’t even a knife guy and he plans to buy a Boker from you guys as well.
I was a teenager in the 1960s. All of my uncles carried, and I looked forward to carrying, Boker, Case or Ka-bar pocket knives. There were lots of debates about which was best but everybody conceded that you had a good knife if you had any of those brands.
This was incredible guys! Really made me appreciate the quality and craftsmanship from Boker. Would love to see more content like this! Maybe Victorinox sometime?
Apparently Lennart was not only the best apprentice in knive making but rather the best of all apprentice machinists in Germany, which is a big deal. I think his statement regarding craftmanship is a really important message for young people. Learning a craft might be a better/happier option for many who feel the pressure to get university degrees.
Yeah surprisingly I'm gonna have to agree this might be one of the best videos you guys have done. I had no idea Boker had such a passionate and storied history. Based off of all of the plastic scales I assumed they were kind of a throwaway knife... Wow was I wrong. That leopard domascus blade is so sick and the story is even cooler. Great work.
This was an absolute joy to watch. This is truly one of your best videos in a long time. So well produced in every aspect. This really ticked my nostalgia box having lived in Germany for a year. Thank you Blade HQ for the awesome content!
Boker fan here. I bought my younger buddy a boker and just sent him this video. Interesting designs incredible history. I really appreciated the young apprentices. Seems like a great job good people. Thanks guys. Cheers
Thank you for this video. I absolutely loved it. First and foremost, I love Germany, language, culture, people. And I love good knives. What a terrific video segment you made here. Very professional. Also Zak did a professional job overdubbing, telling us the background and history of Böker in Sollingen since 1605. Awesome segment guys. Bravissimo. (Or in German one might say "Gut getan" or Well done.)
I'm very happy to say that I have owned (and still own) many fixed blade Boker Knives. One of these is in my current knife rotation and not in the safe. I have loved blades longer than I have studied Kali or Silat, and this goes back to when I was ten years old...I'm now fifty-five years old, so, it has been a while.
This young man who is in charge of stamping that skipped college will have the best hands on experience! The learning atmosphere at Boka will only produce a really great product! 👍🏽
Now my favorite video on the channel. I love where this channel has come and I can see it’s only going to get better. Also now have a huge respect for Boker!!
147 👎? I guess that’s the number of people that pitched this idea to discovery channel and they said no! Lol! 😂🤣 What a video! Not only about knives but about your career..., the kid said, no university for me. I’m here through an apprentice program. That’s refreshing! The man even said, we have those knife nuts working for us. Here in USA we teach that without university you are nothing. 🤦🏻♂️ Good job guys! New sub here!
Good point Wilson. I write this as an ageing middle-aged university lecturer of long-standing. If I could do it all again, I would not get a degree and I would not teach undergraduates. It is not that I do not think that education is not valuable. Quite the opposite in fact. It is just that education comes in many shapes and forms. I have learnt that one of the most valuable forms of education is that taught and supervised by the ancient guilds. Namely, the learning of a craft skill. Talking about something is all very well. Making something,.... now that impresses me.
I own a couple Böker knives and I can honestly say they are some of my favorite knives in my collection. I EDC one that might actually be my favorite after a CRKT minimalist.
Last week I purchase my first Boker Yellowjacket which will be delivered tomorrow. Enjoy all of the Blade HQ videos! Especially this video about the history of Boker Knifes! Thank you!
Nice to see that you came here to get an insight into the great work of Böker. I have been there for a couple of times and each single visit feels as great as it was for the first time. There is something special. The people, the buildings, the city, the history. I think you know what I am taking about... Hope to see more of those videos from other manufacturers. Regards from Germany!
Thanks for the video. I grew up in the 50’s and 60’s and Boker, Case and Ka-bar were the preferred knives by my uncles. You will not be surprised to hear I’m mostly a slip joint knife guy.
I have been whittling and carving for most of my 75 years. My first GOOD pocket knife was a Boker Congress with stag scales. I still have it. From there, I bought several more Boker Congress with bone and walnut. Dang fine knives!
Castles everywhere! Well, maybe not literally everywhere, but yeah, we do have some old buildings and amazing churches around. Hope you had a good time visiting my homecountry, have a good christmas, keep up the amazing channel and greetings from Germany!
This was the Best video I've seen from you folks! (And I'm not just saying that in the hopes that you travel to other countries and bring back great beer and more beautiful knives, not there's anything wrong with that.) Boker knives have always been Top-Quality and even their lower-priced Kalashnikov type models are great, durable values for your money. Can we get more international (or American) tours of knife manufacturers??? Not that there's anything wrong with a bunch of cool dudes talking about knives on the table in front of them but I can get that on a lot of RUclips knife channels, Although granted you guys do it better than they do. Thank you for everything you do.
Brilliant video! I have always admired Boker knives and own 2 of them but now I know the history behind the company I want to add more to my collection! Really great friendly people in a great factory with a fascinating history! 10/10
Guys, thank you. I am the sort of knife geek that likes to shop and check blades at the store.. stores which are not in my state in Mexico. Didn't know that Boker has a Mexico branch. So I went after Xmast to visit the store Casa Boker, check out knives and buy me a Straight razor from Boker.. Next vacations maybe I'll go have a talk with Melinda. Mis mejores deseos y Feliz año a todos en BladeHq
wow thank you for making this documentary.. i'm just starting collection of knives.. and I just got my 1st Boker knife... its a kalashnikov XL and it so awesome to hold and play with haha... now i know I got a very nice knife with rich history on it... good job sir...
You definitely showed the best bit of Solingen surrounding area and inside the factory. The city is pretty grim. I visited with my family. We were a 3 hr drive away and just went so I could visit the Boker store and the Zwillings shop you should try and get in the factories of some of the other makers in the city.
It was really cool to see people so passionate about their work. Sadly we have lost that in America. I am a tool room machinist and I absolutely love what I do and I have been at it for 30 years now.
Such an amazing video guys! Big ups to your production team and I think this would make a great series sometime, visiting more manufacturers and getting a taste of the country and the history behind some of them.
This video was super! This video almost makes me want to get a boker. The editing in this is phenomenal. I felt like I was watching an actual documentary. Thank you Blade HQ for making this great video!
WOW! I just watched all 4 seasons of Black Sails which takes place in 1715. It's amazing to think that some of the tools actually used then could have been Boker.
Okay guys, I'm "green w/envy"! Spent 4ish yrs. there while in the military, NW of K-Town (Kaiserslaughtern-sp?)! Absolutely LOVED it there! My kind of place. As you found out (probably) "they make the BEST beer and white wine in the WORLD-hands down"!!! Thanks, have a "Merry Christmas🎄 and a safe New Year🎉"! Take care, "God Bless", sincerely Randy.
Love the video please feature more just like this! Maybe a running series. Thank you for great content. Makes me even more proud that my Boker I carry daily is more than my beater knife! 🔪
I found a meat cleaver in a second hand store. I could not believe the maker stamp said Henry Boker. Ten dollars. PS......Since this is attracting likes I will add.......It had been misused. Perhaps as a shake splitting fro. The spine was moderately peened over. Some rust. Original hardwood handle. I went easy on the clean up, no abrasives other than super fine steel wool here and there. Nice patina, takes a wicked edge. Heavy piece! Pride of place in my kitchen.
Nice work guys. My favorite item in my collection is a fixed boker plus caracal in D2, sick blade. Also, their catalog is enormous, if you could open a shop and sell all the boker knives, the shop would have to be BIG. They use so many handle materials and designs you cannot get bored of this brand.
This video was incredibly interesting and I hope you continue to do more longform content like this. You did a great job highlighting all the passion the folks at Boker have for their craft. Bravo!
I bought my first Boker knife a little more than a month ago thinking these were cheaper automatic knives than some of the competitors. I can now say the are low cost but definitely not cheap. I love my mini kalashnikov and will be buying others and looking at their higher end models after using this knife.
Makes me want to get a boker knife now. Thank you for the video. Wish you could do some other ones like this start with the oldest and work your way to the youngest knife companies.
These people commenting before they even watch the video ha who would even do that. Edit: After watching this and the great people at Boker. Just a lil' fun fact:
Germans used to call someone getting stabbed a 'Greeting from Solingen' because of their long history of knife/tool making
Sounds pretty cool. That's an amazing fact.
