For people finding hidden rooms with children's stuff in them: up to ~the 90s, having children with mental or physical deformities was considered shameful. People with these kids would hide them in their house, and act like they didn't exist in front of "polite company". Those rooms were usually either a room to lock the kids in while the rest of the family was out, a schoolroom (these kids wouldn't be put in public school), or a room to put them in even company was over. And for the folks finding sealed attics or basements: GET THEM PROFESSIONALLY CHECKED FOR MOLD. A common mold abatement strategy was to seal the mold away from living areas so it can't spread to the rest of the house. Mold can be deadly.
there was that time i found a door to a really creepy tunnel that seemed to change its length and on the other side, there was an Other Mother who was just like my mother, except she was much more attentive had buttons for eyes......
After 5 years of being in our house may parents found 2 crawl soaces in our attic. The attic had veen converted into an in-law suite in the 1940s. There were areas that they put wall so that they could put piping and electrical in a more accessible area without cutting too many holes. We found some toys in the area because it was big enough for two kids to hide and play there. The area is harder to reach because someone redid ourroff with like 7 inch nails so there is like 4 inches of exposed nails in our attic area
Not really a secret room, but I did have an unexpected discovery. My mother told me when my grandparents built our house, there was a laundry chute put in, but they had it sealed up because they would never use it. During a renovation of the bathroom and hallway area, I found the laundry chute and ripped off the wallpaper covering it. I opened it up and there was an envelope with a couple hundred dollar bills taped inside the door. My grandparents were teenagers through the great depression and always kept cash close. When they moved to senior living, they complained that there was money they left but couldn't remember where it was hidden. That money was very helpful for paying for the renovation and I am looking forward to more updates to see if anything else was forgotten.
Story 14: you found a panic room. In the event of a break in or some other such incident, you retreat to it and call for help while also being able to monitor the intruders.
