Hi Betty, I initially questioned the start mark making, since then I realized you are creating a mental map of the canvas, basically the lay of the land for your creative work.
@@Audion That's a good way to look at it. But for me, it's much simpler...I'm loosening up and connecting with the canvas. Thanks, Jeff!
Love it!!! Would love to see you do a limited pallette painting. So excited you'll be uploading more, I really enjoy watching you paint!!!
You're very generous to share your process and talent!!
Cool! I'll add limited palette painting to my list! Thanks so much, Ashley!
Awww Betty. You’re so sweet and have so much knowledge. And I love the fact that you are willing to share. My hero…..❤️
You're super kind, Amy! Thank you!
Love, love, love the happy colors. Personally I liked the one on the left. It gave me a very comfortable and peaceful feeling. The one on the left made me feel anxious hoping you would calm down all those dots. This was only the second time I've watched you and subscribed to your site immediately. Love watching and learning from you. Thanks so much! Nancy
Thank you so much, Nancy! I'm so glad you're here!
Hi Betty! Beautiful. Love watching your paint/art process. And your calming narration is just so much a part of the whole art experience for us!!! Thank you for sharing this depth with all of us.
You are so welcome, Angela! Thank you so much for watching!
I love listening to your thought processes as you work. The whys of when you change things and what you feel the composition needs to improve on it. You are teaching your viewers as you paint and I LOVE that.
So happy to hear you like my narration on my videos! Thank you, Deborah!
Love seeing the development, Betty! Thank you for the insight into the small brushes - game changer! Your commentary is excellent. Thank you for such a terrific video.
Glad it was helpful, Micki! Thank you so much for watching!
I am so incredibly grateful that you create these videos and share so much of yourself. I’m early in my journey (in my 60’s!) so I genuinely appreciate you sharing the totality of your journey through these two pieces. Understanding how you approach each session, what you look for, how you connected with your passion and developed your style is so inspiring. When I think of the word community and how each individual contributes to it, this is a shining example - no holding back - here’s what I do and how I do it - shared for the benefit of others. No silos, no holding back. Shared with genuine passion. Your work is beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you kindly, Phil! I love sharing what I have learned. I was once just starting out and was starved for information. I'm passing along what I know to make your journey a little easier. Have fun exploring, experimenting, and having fun!
Thank you Betty. So helpful listening to your thought process. You've just put me in my happy place. Once again... gorgeous!
Wohooo! Happy place is the best place to be! Thank you so much, Gill!
Thank you! You release my creativity to dare.
Awesome! Love hearing that. Thanks for watching, Joe!
I love watching this process and appreciate the speeded up video. I would appreciate a tiny slice of the video in real time just to get a feel for how fast or slow you paint.
Oh, good idea! I'll try to do that on a future video. Thank you for watching, Janice!
I just love your style and as I am into flowers and nature I have been painting on your style and I am very pleased I would love to show you
I have been painting all my life I have recently been doing more abstract. Still not feel overly happy do we artist feel we have arrived.love it Betty .
Well, I'd say as artists, we are always growing, learning, experimenting...so we never arrive. But, I believe there comes a time when we're feeling more confident in our abilities as artists. I know when I started and was just learning, I wasn't feeling confident as I do today (after many hours and years of creating).
You can email me at bettyfranksart@gmail.com. I'd be happy to see your art! (Please note that I don't provide critics.) Thank you for watching, Sheila!
Betty,
You are my favorite artist! I have been trying to follow your style and noticed the beautiful dragon spanning these two paintings! Also how fun to see all the other creatures hidden in these paintings! You are an amazing talent!
Wow, thank you, Karen! I don't see any of those things in my art...only fields of flowers. Thanks so much for watching!
I love these 2 colorful paintings 🌹💝👍
Thank you so much, Edwina!
Thank's dear betty...you are really inspired me
I'm so glad! Thank you for watching, Erna!
Beautifly done. Thank you for your generosity!
Thank you so much for watching, Pamela!
Wow, fantastic paintings. I started abstract a few months ago after discovering you but gave up in frustration. Glad I came back to you. I'm inspired once more.
Wonderful! I love hearing that I'm inspiring others to create. It takes practice and patience. Keep at it, Lucille!
@@BettyFranksArt Yes, it does. Thanks :)
This was wonderful! Thank you so much! Your work is gorgeous!
Thank you so much, Jen! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I'd love to see what you'd create with a limited palette. I'm on the journey, too. I'm in the difficult part, or the beginning part, I guess I should say--lol. Your videos were the first painting process videos to really inspire me to try painting on canvas, after years of mixed media on paper.
Hi Sharon! I'm so happy that you connected with my art and painting process! I'll be creating one with a limited palette soon! Thank you so much for letting me know!
I finally had time to sit and watch for a while. I love these long videos and I slow them to more carefully watch your mixing and canvas work. Then I get so inspired I have to go back and paint on my projects. So I keep coming back and watching in pieces. Don't change. I love these long ones. The painting are super. I don't know how someone could separate them. Thanks again. Thanks for the links. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you like the long videos and that they're inspiring you to get creative! Thank you so much!
Betty, thank you for ALWAYS inspiring me to use COLOR! Your work makes me so happy! And I love your videos!
I'm so glad! Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you Betty for sharing your process and knowledge with us. I love painting trees and forest and landscapes in general, but I have become bored with realism and I'm looking to transition to abstract art, but didn't know how to paint the forest without the trees. Your advice on figuring out the specifics of what you love about a subject really helped me to look deeper at what I'm trying to convey with my art and I feel like I have a springboard now from which to launch this new direction in my art. Thanks for your great advice and by the way I really love love your work! It makes me happy!
Thank you so much, Phae! I'm so happy that the information is helping you in your own path towards creating abstract art!
Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your style. I have painted on and off for years. You have helped me find my 'style'. I feel like I am now painting with less 'stress' and enjoying the process. I received my Nova paints this week.....love them! Again, thank you.
You are so welcome, Patti! I'm so happy to hear that you're enjoying the painting process. And, have fun with your new Nova paints!
Hi Betty. Love your instructional videos. Watch at least 1 every day! I'm just getting back into painting after many years without a paint brush in my hands. Re educating and finding new ways of expressing myself at 56.
I love taking pictures and converting piece to black and white to check color values. Great tip!! Thank you.
I started in late January 2021 after receiving a special Christmas gift, a tabletop easel box from my psuedo neice to encourage me. It was for after my abdominal surgery but which was delayed ...lol ...it called out to me...what can I say. I have Art in my Heart..
I'm sorry about your surgery, Lynde! I hope you're doing better now and having fun creating. Thanks so much for watching my videos! I'll be posting a new one soon!
Thank you for your generous information. I am learning a lot from you.
Yay! Love to hear that. Thank you for finding me on RUclips, Carolyn!
Betty, you are so generous with your time and sharing of your process -- thank you!
You are most welcome! Thank you for watching!
New subbie here- just lost (in a good way) in this whole video- so much information and so many tips and tricks that you have used!!
I'm so happy you enjoyed the video, Brandy! I agree with you that a blank canvas can be intimidating. I think that's why I love the way I start each piece. Thank you so much for watching and commenting (and subscribing!)!
love it so much.... Thank you... Emma
Thank you so much, Emma!
Hi Betty, I admire your work so much. Beautiful shapes, colors and passioned spirit comes out in all your work! The painting on the right at 15:58 is so raw and powerful. It's really exciting to study and feel the burst of movement you have going there, as is a lot of your work in around the 1/2 mark. NOT saying at all that I don't love your finished pieces as well. I wonder if you've ever taken a good hard look at your work in the earlier stages and just go with the loose, free style? Could you ever see them as "finished" in a more raw stage? Maybe not, I know a lot of people struggle at that point in their work too. Maybe that's why we're artist because we secretly love the struggle! PEACE
You make a great point, Kay! Yes, I probably could stop sooner, but honestly, I don't LOVE it at that stage. If I did, then I would have stopped. Artists are all different and some prefer the very raw stage (one artist that has a studio next time mine always loves my art more in the earlier stages and it's similar to what he produces in terms of the rawness of it) and others (like me) keep going! Thank you for watching and sharing your views!
The blue spots you did not like at first to me are sky, grey house, red roof, white picket fence. Even separately they are peeks of a house. Just beautiful Betty. Thank you for uploading.
Glad you liked it! Thank you for watching!

So awesome 👍
Thank you so much!
@@BettyFranksArt you're welcome, my pleasure. I'm working my way through all your videos...
Hi Betty, watching you paint is like meditation for me 😍. Plz do answer my questions, I’m also an abstract artist 👩🏼🎨 trying to learn.
Do you have any theme in mind when you start a new painting? Also do you use colours intuitively what ever you feel like using at the moment or do you use colour according to the story/meaning you want to tell through your finished piece?
Great questions! My art is inspired by my love for fields of flowers (and flowers in general). I don't have any perceived notion of how the final piece will look. I also don't plan on my colors. I choose them based on how I'm feeling that day. Thank you so much for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt thanks for your support
Hi betty i love painting dancers like me yey
Wonderful! Love that!
Hi Betty- I love your process. in fact, you have inspired me to start with the mark making in my own art. It was something that was missing in my own process. I find that since I have started this practice, I don't feel as pressured or blocked up. It truly is a release on the canvas that allows the creative to embrace imperfections and mistakes. It also allows me to create in the present and not think about a finished piece. I find that as creatives we sometimes are too focused on the end that we are not present for the creating process. Thank you so much for sharing.
I was also wondering what time of video set up you are using? What type of camera are you shooting with? I have been an art teacher for the past 23 years and now I am looking to focus on a professional career. I would like to video my process and create your tube channel. I think it would help me become a more transparent artist. Again, thank you so much. You have been such an inspiration to me.
Thank you so much for your kind response to my video! I really appreciate it. I love the creative process from start to finish. As an intuitive painter, I don't think about the end results (mainly because I have no clue how it'll look). I'm so happy that you mentioned being in the present. You have affirmed that I stay present with each layer. Thank you for that!
For my camera, I'm using a Sony camcorder and my cell phone (Galaxy S20). But, I wish I had purchased a good camera and also offers video recording. If you google "best camera for art" or something like that, you'll probably find some really great lists!
Don't you hate being separated from your folks? Sounds like a nice time with your mother. Enjoying the painting process Betty. I would be interested in seeing paintings on paper. Thank you.
Yes, I miss my parents when I'm not with them. They're getting older and I'm cherishing the time I have with them. I just recorded a couple of painting sessions where I'm working smaller on paper. One is in my small sketchbook and the other is two 8x8" pieces on paper. I'll be uploading those soon. I also plan on creating a couple on 18x24" paper. Thanks, Hans!
@@BettyFranksArt Will be looking forward to seeing that. Thanks. My parents are gone now, so it feels odd not being able to call them and share or ask questions.
Betty, Really am enjoying watching your process, your soft, relaxed voice and energy really reflect your joyful paintings and spirit. As a newbie I have a couple of questions. What kind of canvas are you using and how thick is it? Also your are you using the same Nova paint medium or different paint mediums particularly with your colors. Some of your small jars look thicker. Love how you use Gesso as your white too and how you mix them with your colors! Again thank you Betty for all you offer, may you grow and prosper!
Hi Debby, glad you liked the video! I'm using heavy duty canvas that are 1.5" deep. I didn't use any mediums in this video. On occasion, I'll use glazing medium but it's rare because it takes much longer to dry. The jars are all from Nova Color Paint and the paint consistency is the same in all of them. Thanks so much for watching!
I truly loved your process and so grateful that you are so generous on sharing :) I will be using your links for the dick blick purchases and I am already following you on instagram...I am a 3 year watercolorist self taught and just started dabbling in abstract acrylic..wow what a different animal!! LOL ,almost "threw in the towel "and seen this in my feed to watch..you saved me!
Yes, abstract is a whole different animal and language! It takes practice...lots of practice! I hope you continue! Thank you so much for watching!
Watching you paint this and noticed the large painting on the right. Looks softer than what I have seen you do before. Did you record yourself painting that one? It is beautiful! I love watching you paint.
Thanks, Susan! Unfortunately, I didn't record the painting of that one. You can see it here: instagram.com/p/CITSzZ6h4q0/

I love your paintings! I was wondering how do you not make your colors muddy when layering? ❤️❤️
Great question! I work in layers and only one color family at a time. For example, I'll start with warm colors and let that dry and then switch to cool colors. This keeps the warm and cool colors separated so that they don't create mud (unless I want brown!). Thanks for watching, Christine!
Bonjour Betty ; i like your work very mutch, thank you for sharing it with us. Do you let dry between 2 colors ?
Yes I do! Unless I'm at the every end and need to balance my colors, so I work with both warm and cool but don't let them mix. Thanks, Brigitte!
Betty, with all of those beautiful colors on your plastic, do you ever save and use the paint skins you peel off?
I don't. I did at one time, but really didn't like how it looked with my artwork. Thanks for watching!
I prefer the two paintings together than separately.
Me, too! But, one of them just sold! Thanks for watching, Alison!
Good bon travail
Thank you so much for watching!
I really feel those two painting should stay together.
Yes, wouldn't that be lovely if they found a home together?!
Hi Betty thank you so much for posting your process for us all to watch. Your work is gorgeous! Please can you tell me why you changed your name?
Hi Belinda! Thank you so much for watching. I changed my name because I went through a divorce. Stay well!
Oh sorry Betty that's not an easy time hey, Ive been through that too ..... Always kept my maiden name with my art though so I'm glad I did.
You were smart! It took a lot of work to change my name everywhere!
That's so damn hot! Awesome!!
Thanks, Javier!
Love these! One of my favorites, how about you? It flowed along really smoothly. Wondering if you have noticed the quality of your Voiceover is not as good as past videos: a bit of an echo or something harsh sounding.
Glad you liked these two! Yes, I think it flowed a little easier than some of my other videos, however, there were still a couple of trouble spots that needed lots of work to get right! Not sure why the voiceover quality isn't as good as before. I'm using the same equipment and same editing. I'll try adjusting the bass/treble next time. It sounds fine to me on my computer, but not as good on my cell phone. Thanks for letting me know!
Hi Betty, Do you use the opaque translucent or transparent from nova . I saw they have those choices . Thought I check with you before ordering . Thank you so much your videos are so much fun to watch . Watched this one for the second time..

Thank you so much for watching the entire video, Bronwyn!
I’m curious about your comment “...want the viewer to read the painting by entering at the right side and exiting at the lower left”. Why right to left? and How do you accomplish that? Thanks, Betty. They’re gorgeous!
Good question! I made that comment more as an example of how I want the viewer to not get stuck in one spot when viewing my art. I like it to have a flow to it that allows the viewer to enter and exit the painting with ease. I hope that makes sense. Thank you for asking, Lauren!
@@BettyFranksArt It was more the specificity of right to left
That is curious. I guess most Western cultures who write left to right would want to come in from the left.
@@alisonmcmillan9622 I agree. My example wasn't very well articulated. What I really wanted to express was the need for the eye to enter and exit the piece...from any direction. I want it to flow. Hopefully, that makes more sense.
Would you say that if you’re making a smaller painting on paper for example, you would put less black marks on the base layer?
Good question! I still cover my smaller pieces on paper about the same ratio as I do my larger pieces. Thanks so much for watching, Sarah!
Where did the mark making begin? Is it a long standing technique?
I had a love for marks since I began creating mixed media art (about 8+ years ago...and a love for creating layers). But, I was so uncertain about my marks. I would question every mark I put down. It drove me crazy and hindered my ability to express myself. It wasn't until I took an online workshop with Nancy Hillis that I learned to love all my marks because they were unique to me.
do you let the colour dry after each layer of painting ? Watching the video I have the impression you paint wet on wet.
greatings from Austria and thank you
I'm sure Betty will reply too, from what I've learned so far you have to let your cool colours dry before moving onto warm colours so you don't muddy the colours. Then the warm layer has to dry before you go back to cool colours again. I tried it and it worked really well! So now I only paint either cool colours or warm colours on each separate layer. But yellow can go with cool or warm layers.
Hi Barbara, Tessakate250 was spot on with her response. I like to wait for the layers to dry so that I don't create mud. However, at the every end, I go back and forth between warm and cool colors, but I don't mix them. I hope that helps! Thank you!
You know me so well! Thank you for responding and I'm so happy it's working for you!
@@nighteyesfool Thank you very much - Greatings from Tirol - Austria
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you Betty, i will try
Hi Betty! Do you mix your colors with white? You have mentionned that you like to use red directly but what about the other colors? Thank you!
Hi Lynda! Yes, I mix most of my colors with white and mix other colors, too. For example, if I'm mixing blue with white, I may also mix in teal or yellow or green.... The possibilities are endless!
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you! Yesterday I bought more acrylic paint and a 40 X 60 canvas! So excited to start after Christmas! Sure won't look like yours but I intend to have fun and experiment! Happy Holidays! Lynda from Québec, Canada
Sounds like fun! Happy New Year to you, Lynda!
Can you please take and place a nearby photo or video of the hooks where you hang your canvasses on before start painting
Hi Elzabe, the "hooks" are long (about 3") screws in the studs that stick out about a half inch. I think I'm going to have to make a video about that soon. Thanks so much for watching!
What do you use to vanish it after you are finished the painting?
Hi Elzabe! Here's a video on how I varnish my art on paper. I use the same process for canvas and wood: ruclips.net/video/KBg4GjajaPg/видео.html
Hi Betty what size brush do you use ?
Good question! I like to use a variety. In this video, I probably used a 10 or 12 plus a rigger (script brush) and a couple of smaller sizes. I like to use a variety. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks good work art so lovely bev dancer
Thank you so much, Bev!
Have you ever heard of the scribble test.? It interesting that you just make marks in the beginning which is just scribble. Which are marks that are created from the unconscious. I think if you stood back and studied the scribble you’ll see things that are sitting in the depth of you. Great painting
Hi Katrina! I have not heard of that test. Honestly, I don't like to over analyze my marks or my process. I prefer to be in the moment and enjoy my process. Thanks so much for watching!
