That's isn't how Cobain did it. He would also play the 5th fret of the G string also. He played a 4 note powered chord. Bass note on fret 3. All others (three more notes) parallely on fret 5. That's why some people hold their chord in that way you just spoke about.
Johnny Ramone did this too but he also played the full barre chord instead of the simplified power chord

I dont understand. If you play also the 5th fret on the g string,that is a C , you are not playing a power chord (that isnt minor nor major)
