In Rafah, we speak with Gaza-based journalist Akram al-Satarri about Israel tightening restrictions on humanitarian aid, refusing a ceasefire deal and planning to invade the city where over a million Palestinians are sheltering. Israel’s military seized control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, blocking humanitarian aid from entering the besieged territory, and trapping Palestinians under heavy Israeli bombardment. This comes after Israel also closed the Karem Abu Salem crossing in southern Gaza this weekend after a Hamas attack killed four Israeli soldiers. “Israel is not allowing the entry of the humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is perceived as a lifeline,” says al-Satarri, who reports Palestinians are “in despair” as Israel orders a third of Rafah’s population to move ahead of their invasion. “They understand that more destruction, more devastation, more death and deprivation is coming for them.” Al-Satarri also speaks about Israel banning Al Jazeera, one of the only international outlets with reporters in Gaza. “I think they want to silence Al Jazeera and they want to silence all the free media for the sake of preventing any further exposure of the things that are happening on the ground.”

The discussion in this war is absurd.
First. Israel acted selflessly to live in peace with the Palestinians in Gaza. It was more than a decade ago when Israel itself ordered Israeli citizens who had lived there for decades to literally leave their homes. The first thing the Palestinians did in return was to elect a government that enshrined the goal of destroying Israel in the constitution. The elected government followed through with its promise. Since its founding, thousands of rockets have flown into Israeli settlement areas. Dozens of civilians died in terrorist attacks. Millions of aid funds - intended for civilian institutions - were misused to sponsor this terrorism. October 7th was just what Humus had been doing for years.
Secondly. Israel behaved more humanely in this conflict than any other conceivable party in any imaginable conflict. It allowed Palestinians to work in Israel, receive medical care or even migrate to Israel. During war, they warn civilians where their military is operating. They admit collateral damage and apologize for it.
The situation is clear. In no other conflict the responsibility for the suffering has been so one sided and clear - in no other conflict have the perpetrators been held accountable so weakly. People with voice and power who claim to reject war and the nature of war have a duty to unequivocally name the culprit of this war and do everything in their power to eliminate them. Everything else is responsibility for the resulting suffering and is as history has proved continuing this madness.

Second point which the pro-Pallie idiots ignore is that ISRAEL PULLED OUT OF GAZA BACK IN 2005. Last but not least, what was even the rationale for Hamas attacking inside Israel proper on 7 October? There was no war or occupation going on in Gaza at that time, the crossed the border and invaded INTO Israel to conduct those murders and kidnappings. In addition, Hamas fired over 30,000 rockets - NOT at military targets, but Israel cities. Then what did the Palestinians do? They CELEBRATED those attacks. How many houses were destroyed and how many families were expelled from their homes? How many people were killed (children/women/elderly)? How many people were detained (children/women/elderly) without charge? How many children did he have? He is under house arrest and cannot leave. I have extremely deep respect to all the brave journalists in Gaza. At the same time, and please don’t get me wrong here, I don’t understand why they still choose to carry the blue “Press” vest at this point. Normally in a conflict zone with a somehow ‘civilized’ army we know they would go a long way to respect and comply with basic international law and do what they can to protect press and doctors from harm, but we know the so-called ‘most moral army of the world’ couldn’t care less and in fact not only that but also deliberately target you if you wear a press vest or a doctor uniform. Why wear something that does the exact opposite to ones safety and those around you than it is supposed to?? You can still report undercover without the vest. There are reports of doctors and medical personnel leaving behind their health care uniforms to blend in with the civilians in areas under siege and protect not only their own life but those around as well as their invaluable function to the people in desperate need of their care.
The only reasons I can think of is to show legitimacy of being official press to the ones watching at home, legal bindings requiring press members of respected media outlets to wear them or the journalists not wanting to feel like hiding away or compromising ones identity and associating the vest with a symbol of bravery and standing ones ground willingly accepting the risk of becoming a martyr for a greater goal that would only further proof to the world that Israel in fact do target doctors and journalists and thus further turn public opinion against them.
