  • #notsponsored I bought the Insta360 X4 and tested it against the Insta360 X2. I also install the X4 screen protector, test the different sharpness level settings and FOVs (mega, ultra, dewarp). I also discuss the essential accessories to get. Overall, the X4's 5.7K at 60 FPS and 11K timelapse are the new killer features.

Congratulations on being the first reviewer (that I have seen, and I have watched about 100!) who has tested and displayed the sharpness settings. Several have said in passing that they use low sharpness and to my eyes, that gives an almost out of focus look which throws away the 8K 360 potential. In several reviews there have been side-by-side X3 / X4 shots and the reviewer waxes lyrical about the superiority of the X4 shot, but I have looked at it and thought, actually a lot of the time the X3 looks sharper, more detailed. Last night I watched some family video footage which must have been shot on the "X1" or whatever it was called (judging by the date), viewed on a 4K TV, and... it actually looked wonderful! Admittedly at the beach in full Australian sun. I also have the X3. But that put me off ordering the X4 - why buy it if I am happy with a much older version? Well, yes there are reasons to upgrade, and your sharpness samples have yet again swung me towards doing it. Despite the ache in the wallet you have caused, thanks for this review!

Yes completely agree on the low sharpness comment. After I reviewed my footage at low sharpness I thought the lens was dirty, luckily applying some sharpness in post helped. I do think medium is the way to go.
To be honest, the only way you can tell the difference between the X4 and X2 (or X3) is to view it on a large screen (or if you crop in a lot). If you view it on a phone, or even a tablet, the footage is quite close.
There’s one thing I didn’t mention is the stitch line. The X4 is thicker so the stitch line is slightly worse at close distances.
If I had an X3 I would also be thinking twice about upgrading. IMO the only serious difference between the X3 and 4 is the 5.7K 60 and the 11K time lapse. If those are important to you then I would say go for it.

@@wonked Thanks for those thoughts. I confess to being a serial camera buyer and I am trying to break the habit! But the manufacturers and their YT promoters keep offering me another hit.... I do tend to place more weight on the opinions of actual end users like yourself.

It somewhat puts my mind at ease that I'm not the only one with the finnicky record button not working sometimes when I press it. I thought I was going crazy. I also then saw someone on Reddit was having the same issue. I really hope @insta360 addresses this with a firmware fix.

Strangely enough after filming the video I couldn’t reproduce the issue. I did a 30+ minute 8K recording and I was able to start another 8K recording immediately, very strange.

@@wonked It is a rare occurrence for me as well, but still annoying with its unpredictability. Thanks for sharing your experience regardless.

@@wonked ok, with more time and playing around, I've found that if I press the shutter button and hold it for more than a split second, then it won't record. You have to literally just press it and let go instantly, no holding whatsoever. This seems to work so far. The shutter might be sensitive to any hint of a "long press" I believe. In fact, there is an actual function when you do long-press the shutter, and it's to cancel a recording already in process (not a bad function, really). So the shutter seems to be very distinctive between a quick, instant click (record), and anything fraction of a second longer. Give it a try.

We can see here than lens is blurry without sharpen filter. It's a problem and see us than we can make better 8K camera.
But we can mesure the blur at the center and the edge of lenses to see it's global.
