NO FORGE? NO PROBLEM- Making a Hunting Knife From a Broken Old Pry Bar

- To take a break from guitar making I decided to spend the day making a stock removal knife from an old pry bar I had lying around. I just moved into a new shop space and haven't set up a forge yet so I had to get a bit creative but she turned out pretty well!

hey man. great job! just a friendly tip from a fellow knifemaker. that spanish notch you put in the blade has no effect unless the plunge lines are within that notch. the sharpened portion of the blade should continue all the way to that notch. the whole point of it is to make the blade easier to sharpen, you spanish notch currently has no functional use other than looking cool. other than that and the one handed angle grinder thing, you did a great job! also the "burn yourself at least 40 times" thing resonates with me on a spiritual level.
I'm glad somebody pointed it out, that was the only reason I clicked on the video
Wow who needs a whole shop full of tools which I don’t have. That really is a beauty of a knife!
So awesome. Beautiful knife and really cool way to go about it.
Nice one. The handle looks great. One tip for you though, please keep two hands on that grinder. Those things can make a real mess of you if you slip.
But would Doug say “It will keel”?
It will keel my friend. It will keel
It will cut and I thought it was keal? Lol
I love forged and fire
Gotta be the best/stupidest part of that show
I know nothing of knife making, other than what I watch on u-tube. That said, I have wanted to try my hand. So, got plenty of tools around but no knife making tools/forge, etc. You gave me some good ideas to get me started. Thanks.
I'm so glad to hear that! Knife making's a very fun hobby to get into and I look forward to hearing how your first knife goes. Happy building and thanks for watching!
Very nice. Great knife, great humour and like the lack of expensive tools. Good health and stay safe
Thank you so much, I wish all of the best to you as well. Thanks for watching!
I am very impressed with seeing you skill level to make a high quality - beautiful knife with such simple tools like a belt sander (instead of the high cost 2x72 sanders).
Looks AMAZING! 👏
“Make sure you burn yourself at least 40 times during this process” - sounds about right. I never skip this step!
That's how people can tell you're a true professional. Hahah. Just checked out your channel btw, really cool stuff! Keep up the great work!
Thanks man, much appreciated. Same to you.
I'm a retired dentist and as a dentist we work with wax and a flame all the time.
In dental school we worked with wax and a flame every day for several hours. There were about 100 people in our class and EVERY ONE of us set ourselves on fire at least once by leaning over the flame. LOL
Most important part
Essential. That and feeding the steel with a little extra iron from a light bleeding
Great real use knife. And that handle is looking so ergonomic. Thanks for the video my Bladed Brother ⚔️
Thank you for watching Mister Smith!
Hey man - I really enjoyed the build! Thanks for sharing. I need to try this myself, now that you’ve inspired me. 👍🏽
Hahah awesome! I can't wait to hear how your build goes. Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great night!
Excellent video, beautifully designed knife!. cant wait to see another one you do!
Thank you so much! A lot more videos on the way! I have a forge arriving by mail soon so I may even get into a bit of Damascus making. Thanks for watching!
Very nice work you have inspired me to make one..wat I love is that like myself you have no fancy tools to do it
Seeing what you can figure out a way to do without the "proper" tools is half the fun. ;) I can't wait to hear how your build turns out. Good luck and thanks for watching. Happy building!
Really like the design of that knife. I always liked a drop point hunter. They're great for gutting and skinning. I designed a leather sheath sort of like the old mountain man, Indian style, except it has a leather keeper that pops down behind the knife guard. The knife rides on my left side, handle forward. It rides high and out of the way, doesn't flop against your leg. Wish I could show it to you. It would be perfect for that knife. Keep up the good work.
Interesting, sounds like a really cool design! I tend to make my sheaths in a similar "handle forward style" (I'll make a video on that at some point as well) and I really like the utility of having the knife right on the belt. Thank you for the kind words and thank you so much for watching! I hope you have a great day.
Turned out super nice 👍 And the handles were beautiful 👍👍👍👍 Thanks for your time and video !!
Dude!! That’s just a killer knife !! Really the scales are wild !! My hats off to ya,, you got er dun !! You’d make a good Marine !! If you’re not one already !! You work like one !! You gotta job , you got minimal tools but you improvised and finished it !! I make knives, and I really like yours !!! Hhoorah!!!
I think you did a outstanding job young man. 👍
Thank you so much! Hope you have a wonderful day.
Absolute champion knife mate , well done .
Thank you so much! Really appreciate you saying that.
Absolutely beautiful build buddy !!! Subd and a thumbs way up !!!
Love how basic you work your way in d shed
Looked nice! I seen people make knives from old files that hold up very well. I would buy one of your knives they look high quality
Wow, what a compliment! Thank you so much! I would want to get a bit more proficient and educated about the art of knife making before I would consider selling them online, but that certainly may happen in the future! Keep an eye on my channel! I hope you have a wonderful day.
@@80gritschmidt51 thanks, I subscribed, looking forward to watching more knive making videos.
Dude..... you are
an inspiration to us who are just starting out, Excellent knife brother, wishing you great success. Frank
That knife is sick!! And the fighting nails is a great idea never thought of that. Thanks for the video
Thanks Brandon! And I love using nails as pins. Brass pins are gorgeous but they do get pretty expensive when you make a lot of knives. I'll stick to nails for a while I think. Thanks for watching!
@@80gritschmidt51 just realized I wrote fighting nails lol I meant roofing nails 😉
sweet build on the knife
Thanks Steve! Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great day.
Well done man. Great useful knife. Keep it up.
Thank you so much! Many more build videos on the way! I just got a forge so I've been giving all of the scrap steel around my house the evil eye.. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful knife. I’m about to embark on a few knife projects so useful info here and the use of easy every day tools. Many thanks.
I'm glad to be of some help! Good luck in all of your projects, I look forward to hearing how they turn out. Thanks for watching!
Nice video . Beautiful knife .... bravo!
Sweet Knife and Love the Handle !
Thanks man! I'm a sucker for figured woods so I'm always looking for an excuse to use them anywhere I can. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful knife!
Enjoyed the video looking forward to more. Thanks
Thanks, Chuck! More on the way. Happy to have you!
Dam good work with what you was using. Ingenuity at its best. Great job
Thank you! It's pretty fun seeing what you can make with basic tools. Atleast until I can afford the nice ones that is! Thanks for watching! Hope you have a great day.
It's nice to see I'm not the only one who uses nails as pins and tempers with a blowtorch.
Hahaha. Budget bladesmiths, unite! As they say, its only stupid if it doesn't work.
@@80gritschmidt51 By the way thanks for sharing that trick with masking tape and superglue. I used that today and it works amazingly well.
Great looking knife!
Thank you so much!
I really like your knife a lot just got myself a forge going to see what I can do with some railroad spikes and files
Awesome! I've been looking to do a railroad spike knife for some time now. That should be a really fun project. Thanks for checking out my video and happy building!
That was very interesting. Thanks.
Beautiful knife. You have a great skill man.
Thank you so much! I'm still pretty new to knifemaking but I'm living it. I plan on forging out a tomahawk today. If everything goes to plan you'll see that video soon. Thanks for watching!
Very nice! Excellent job!
Thank you so much!
That’s a nice one I like the handle bacon wrapped looking
Hahaha bacon wrapped. God, that's all I'm going to see when I look at it now. Thanks for the compliment and for watching! Hope you have a great day.
You talked me into it. Pry bar it is.
Awesome! I've made a few more pry bar knives since this video and they've all turned out great. I can't wait to hear how yours goes. Happy building!
When heating the blade to critical temperature for hardening, make sure you get the heat all the way on the cutting edge. The half an inch of edge by the ricosso was not hot enough and will be soft
nice job. great design
Thank you and thanks for watching! I hope you have a great day.
Great job
Wow thats a nice knife....and could make that with not alot of tools or by hand if you had no tools...looks great...do you know also how to do a holder?? And if so you should also do a video....looks great.
I like your knife, and I like your video. One thing that bothered me is; you used a belt sander with dust collection attached. If a spark got into the dust, it could lay for hours before flaring, not good. Better to remove bag when doing any type of metal. Sorry for being a drag, but I lost a home to fire.
Having actually just recently burned a hole through that very dust collection bag I'd say that I'm forced to agree with you. Definitely something to keep in mind in the future! Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching!
That's a beautiful knife. I love how the handle reminds me of an old wood grip smith and Wesson revolver.
Thanks! I used to own an old Smith and Wesson revolver with exactly the handle you're referencing and I loved it. That's so funny, I never thought about the resemblance. Hahah. Maybe I'm still trying to subconsciously fill the void left by selling that thing. ;p Thanks for watching!
Nice work
Thank you! Hope you have a great day.
Good job.
Nice knife! However, you should harden then temper. Quenching make the steel brittle, tempering gives it just enough softness to not shatter.
Thank you for the advice and thanks for watching! I hope you have a great day.
Great job dude
Thank you so much! And thanks for watching. I hope you have a great night.
Good video. How did you get the two wooden scales apart?
Exelente trabajo,me encantó...muy práctico y básico con pocas herramientas.. .👏👏👏
Muchas gracias! Estoy feliz que te haya gustaso el video y gracias por ver! Espero que tengas un dia excellente.
Sos un genio..
That is an beautiful knife nice job!
Pro Tip; If you can't anneal the tang, use Cobalt drill bits and some cutting fluid.
They make light work of hardened steel.
You can also sharpen Masonry drill bits to drill hardened steel. This is a much cheaper method, but Cobalt bits work better, at a higher cost.
I Salvage leaf springs seems to work pretty good
I am a very big fan of using leaf springs for knives. They turn out really great if you can work with the stuff. I'd love to see some of your work sometime!
I could send you some pictures I just don't know how
@@80gritschmidt51 I could send you some pictures I just don't know how
@@frankfroese2073 my email is kslespaul@gmail.com. You could probably send me a picture through there. I'll just have to keep an eye out so it doesnt end up in my spam pile. Hahah
nice bro.real nice,
That knife ain't gonna break with the thickness of it.
I sure hope not! I do tend to like thick knives. I'm hard on my tools so it just makes sense. Hahah
Cool great work thanks for teach us blessings
Thanks for watching! Just trying to spread the love of making things. God bless!
Great work! I didn't think making a knife with a pry-bar was possible. I didn't think it would have enough carbon to make hard enough steel. Just discovered your channel and subbed. Mabuhay!
Thank you and welcome the the channel! I was actually surprised as well. Though in hindsight pry bars are quite literally spring steel and we all swear by making knives out of leaf springs. I'm so glad you liked the video and there's many more to come. Hope you have a great night!
@@80gritschmidt51 looking forward to more inspiring vids. Cheers.
wow i like it using only angle grinder your the best thumps up her
Thank you so much and thanks for watching! Hope you have a great day.
Great video beautiful knife and the guitar was a great soundtrack for your creative process. I suspected it was you based on your comment early on. Your original composition as well?
Thank you so much! And yes, all off the music in this video was pretty much just stuff that I made up and recorded on the spot. Haha. Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you explain the tempering and hardening used here
Nice work dude
Thank you and thanks for watching! I hope you have a great day.
Very nice knife!
You're an artist.
Almost 2 years after, how is the blade edge, and did you use it a lot?
Thank you for your awesome video.
Why did you not put a pin closer to the blade? Nice job.
Thank you! And to be honest the wasn't really a reason for my only putting one pin, I was just very confident that the epoxy would hold the scales in place. The knife is still holding up very well today but I do put a second pin in all of my builds now just to be on the safe side. :) Thanks for watching!
How do you separate the handle after grinding?
If you work a razor blade or utility knife blade in between the scales behind the tape and give them a slight pry they should pop right apart. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
@@80gritschmidt51 oh.. Thanks
I look forward to seeing your work when you get better tools
Thank you so much! Better tools are definitely on the agenda. It is always a bit of fun seeing how far you can stretch the basics though. :) Thanks for watching!
good !
Thank you!
Excellent!!! Do you know how many hours you put in?
Thank you! I cant remember exactly off the top of my head but a full knife build typically takes about 12- 16 hours of work for me. I can normally whip one out in a weekend though I have made one in as little as 5 hours before. That was some hustle. Hahah
I've watched several knifemaking processes, but yours is the most simple of them all. Easy to follow and the product is great. There are some great woods for handles, such as Australian Ironwood (beautiful flames) Wild Olive and African Blackwood..
Thanks Roy! (Sorry I'm just seeing this comment now. ) I'm a big fan of all of the woods you've mentioned and I've even used African Blackwood before on this channel for a knife. Great stuff, just make sure you respirator up! God bless.
While stock removal is a common and decent way to make a knife. Good forging is always better for stronger metal. Keep that in mind knire makers.
As I'm thinking of how I wish I had coffee this guys like hey I have coffee and you don't😂😂😂😂😂
Be jealous. Be very jealous.
How did you separate the scales after gluing them together?
Why did you glue the handles together and then you separate them to insert the blade?
Temporarily attaching the handles together allows me to quickly shape them both evenly so that they are symmetrical once attached to the blade. It's just a time saver.
You sir just earned yourself a sub
Thanks Mateo! Welcome to the club! More videos coming soon.
Congratulations, very nice video! How long the blade and how long the handle? Thank you!!!
Thank you so much! Both the blade and the handle are 4.125 inches long. The total length is 8.25 inches. Thanks for watching!
Awesome knife, congratulations, dude!
Thank you so much and thanks for watching my man! Hope you have a great day.
Hey great build man!! I’m eyeballing my pry bars now! Hey what kind of oak is that, and what kind of dye did you use?
I'm eyeballing them every time I go to home depot! I wanna do a machete build. I used figured red oak and a "medium red mahogany" aniline dye. Thanks for watching!
My son has a whole collection of knives he also makes some so I wanted to give him a birthday present by making him a knife and I was a little scared using fire so I found this video after I gave him the knife he was shocked for my previous birthday he bought me a laptop and showed how to use it.
Beautiful knife. Would have been good to show how good the edge was by cutting some paper or a little brother.... like how you made it with tools most of us have. Nothing to fancy.. Great job.
Thank you! I realized in hindsight that I totally forgot to film any sharpness tests. Whoops, hahah. Something for future videos! Thanks again for watching.
What belt sander do you use? Trying to get started and need advice. Thanks.
I use a standard belt sander that you could find at any hardware store. This definitely isn't proper usage of it but its held up fecently for me! I've got a similar sander to mine that I found on Amazon linked in the video description. Hope this helps!
Love the vid ceep it coming
Thank you, many more on the way!
Great knife build! Really nice practical looking hunting knife, I would buy it. Keep up the great work. #smithingonabudget
Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun to make and once I get more experienced in knife making I may indeed sell a knife like this. Until then I'll just keep the #smithingonabudget videos going! Hahah. Thanks for watching!
cool man
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Why not temper the blade in a oven?
Great video! What type of dye did you use on the handle? I've run it back several times and can't make out what you are saying. Is this something typically use by guitar makers? I have some curly maple I would like to dye but it is so light weight, it also needs to be stabilized. Not sure how those would work together but I would like to check into it. Thanks.
Sorry, I tend to mumble and have a bit of a maine accent. I'm getting a lapel mic soon to try to make that a bit better! Haha. I use alcohol based aniline dyes almost exclusively when working with figured woods. In my opinion they bring out a chatoyance and detail that cant be matched. I buy them in powder form off Amazon typically. Hope this helps!
Also, aniline dye looks absolutely stunning on curly maple. I'm not sure how it would react to a stabilizer though, that's an area of woodworking I don't have a great amount of experience in. Please let me know what you find out!
I think you did a great job with that knife. I am trying to get into knife making myself and I hope my first knife looks half as good as yours. I did learn a few things from watching your video so keep up the good work!
Thanks so much and good luck on starting your knife building journey! I can't wait to hear how your first one turns out.
Really nice job! You should keep going with knifemaking and will continue to make each knife better than the last. Also I actually AM drinking coffee, so I'm not jealous over that. Sorry.
I'm just actually getting back into knife making now. More videos to come soon! I unfortunately am at work and do not have coffee at the moment so I'd say you win this round. Thanks for watching!
Me watching this with coffee in my hand
Nice👍
Thank you! Love your work as well.
nice job like the tape and glue trick. you didn't show us how sharp it was by the way.
Thank you! Hopefully the tape and glue trick helps you out. It's surprisingly useful all over the place in a shop. And yes, I know I totally spaced it on this video! This was my first knife making video on RUclips and I wasn't really sure what "standard protocol" was yet. There's always something to improve on. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Would a propane torch work?
My gut reaction would be to say no. Propane doesn't burn as hot as MAP gas and MAP gas just barely cuts it here. Could always try to harden a test piece!
Why can every knife maker on youtube draw so much better than me?
Hey! Nice video! is this knife for sale?
Thank you! Unfortunately I gave this knife away to a very close friend of mine shortly after I made this video. I plan on selling some future knives and doing some knife giveaways to my viewers to give back. Keep your eyes peeled on my channel! Hope you have a great day.
safety first!
Coffee first. Safety is a close second though. Haha. Thanks for watching!
I would like to buy one just like in the video
Thanks but I'm serious
I am very flattered that you're interested in buying one of my knives! At this point I'm not quite ready to sell them, I'd like to develop my skills a bit more so that I know that I'm putting out an excellent product. However, I will be selling them in the future and I'm planning on doing a knife giveaway very soon. Stay tuned to my channel!
I understand but I would rather have one that doesn't look machined or perfect. I will keep watch for when they are for sale.
I agree. I would love to the knife you made. Your video inspired me to start knife making as a hobby
Awesome knife amigo, keeping it simple like the humor. Using common tools made this look easier, jaa haaa, no thanks for sharing, and again beautiful knife good work!!
Thank you so much Victor! I'm certainly no expert knifemaker but is fun to see what can be done without fancy belt grinders. ;) Hope you have a great day.
Nice job, good video!
Thank you! Hope you have a wonderful day!
Is that "Tribute" by Tenacious D? Great video
All of the music in this video was just me randomly noodling around on chords, a lot of people have asked me if I was covering that song though, I must've gotten pretty close! Hahah. I'll have to look the song up tonight. Thank you so much and thanks for watching!
Ever make knifes for other people?
I frequently make knives for friends and family who live near me but I want to progress in my skills a bit more and make sure I'm making an impeccable product before I would feel comfortable shipping worldwide or asking reasonable prices for my work. It's definitely something that may happen in the future though! Keep your eyes peeled to my channel! Thanks for watching. :)
