A young boy is taken by his parents to see an apartment, which is to be their new home soon. This is no ordinary condo -- it's filled with the latest technological marvels, with striking visual capabilities and engineered to be self-enclosed and self-sustaining.
The boy is intrigued and curious about the new home, almost as if it was a new toy for him to play with. But as he worries about bringing his cat to the new home, he realizes that it's not just a new home he must adapt to, but a new world.
Directed and written by Ken Kwek and produced in collaboration with architectural studio Zarch Collaboratives, this animated short takes the point-of-view of a young child being introduced to his new, self-sustaining home, with all its technological and engineering marvels. But as he grapples with the idea of it becoming his permanent home, he also confronts the reason that has made such innovation a necessity for survival.
These are weighty subjects, but the well-written writing and visual storytelling render them in a dynamic yet gentle animation style, with warm colors and pulses of engaging brightness. Warmly evocative voice talents are clear and precise in the emotional beats that make up the young child's journey as a character. The narrative also capitalizes on the curiosity that he feels when he encounters the amazing features of his new home, which is dazzling in its blend of imagination and innovation.
It's almost a sci-fi enthusiast's dream: rooms that can immerse users in different natural settings, the ability to grow food in a self-sustaining system and immersive multimedia, all cleverly packed away in a small, modular space. The choice of animation brings these ideas to life with flair and infectious excitement. But as the young boy begins to see beyond the dazzle, the optimism begins to crack, revealing an undercurrent of anxiety in the parents and the child's realization that this may be his permanent home, because his old way of living is disappearing quickly. As he processes this revelation, he runs through a gamut of emotions, but the most heartbreaking one is his eventual resignation -- because there is no other choice.
Imbued with both intelligence and piercing emotional clarity, A CLOSED SYSTEM is about the loss of innocence, as a young child realizes the impermanence and fragility of the world around him and understands what that means for him in a very concrete, immediate way. As a beautiful, empathetic tale of a young generation facing ecological crisis, it acknowledges and centers the confusion and heartbreak of those who will grapple with its consequences for some time to come. Its final, dystopian images take us out of the cloistered interiors of the living quarters to the broader ecosystem around them, in much the same way that the boy has broadened his sense of the world -- and with the same poignant sense of foreboding and heartbreak.

Oof that ending really does make this feel like a warning cry from a future we can still prevent except most of us watching aren’t the ones with the power to do anything meaningful to stop it. We’re just like that child, first in awe of the new technology out future brings, then helpless terror at what’s coming next.
